Since the basic cable debut of The Disney Channel in April 1983, the House of Mouse has used its family-oriented network to feature its best movie ideas that weren't quite ready for the silver screen. At first the films were released under the name “Disney Channel Premiere Films,” but since 1997, they have been released under the banner Disney Channel Original Movie – or DCOM – up until 2022, when Disney+ took up the mantle. Regardless of the term you use to describe these feature-length gems, they bring to the fore a feeling of intense nostalgia. Generations are defined by the DCOM movies of someone's particular childhood! As always, this led the Great Pop Culture Debate team to wonder...what is the Best Disney Channel Original Movie? Movies discussed: High School Musical, The Thirteenth Year, Twitches, Smart House, Zenon: Girl of the Future, Tru Confessions, Quints, Descendants, Cadet Kelly, Brink!, Teen Beach Movie, Halloweentown, The Cheetah Girls, Get a Clue, Zombies, Camp Rock. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Amma Marfo, Bob Erlenback, Joelle Boedecker, and Trey Radu-Blackburn as they discuss 16 of the most-popular Disney Channel Original Movies. This week, comedian, author, and educator Amma Marfo jumps into the diner booth with me! She has written three books, the first of which, The I’s Have It, is all about introverted leaders. Since I am a giant extrovert, I had some questions. We discussed assumptions that are often made about introverts and why introverts do not get the love they deserve. It was cool to hear when Amma became proud of her introversion. We also discussed the intersection of being a woman and a person of color who also identifies as an introvert. We then shifted our convo to underselling yourself as an entrepreneur. Amma dropped some great tips for how to get better. As a community Watching your mouth as an educator and a comedian at the same time. Balancing sensitive topics around sensitive topics. Amma’s latest passion project has been around the importance of creativity. I asked her, how do you teach creativity to adults and really loved her insights about how we need to separate being creative and being artistic. About the Guest: Amma Marfo is a thoughtful yet incurably speaker, writer, and occasional comedian based in Boston, MA. She's written books about creativity and introversion, spoken at conferences all over the country on those same topics, and hula-hooped for 51 minutes straight. Amma’s keynotes, workshops, and trainings don’t look like other events of their kind. Literally. Participants are challenged to reflect on their ideas through writing and drawing, to leave their seats to interact with concepts and one another, and to laugh as much as they learn. All this can take place as she works with participants on topics like temperament and group dynamics, building a culture of creativity, instilling humor in your organization, values-based leadership and activism, and much more. Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me: I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh! I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is alligned with everything I believe in and teach. If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com. Let’s Be Friends on Social Media! Amma Marfo joins us again to discuss some commercials related to Flight of the Navigator. Amma is a self-described "capital D, capital A, Disney Adult" so obviously we had to talk about Disney World. But first we talked about a roadside attraction Amma used to pass in between where her parents used to live and Orlando: Dinosaur World. We watched a three minute … influencer video… we think??? This showed us what there was to do in Dinosaur World. Amma's experience was different in that she and her friends kidnapped one of her friends, blindfolded him, and drove him to Dinosaur World, where they played the Jurassic Park theme on an iPod, just out loud. Also they were wearing T-rex visors. If this single anecdote doesn't make you want to be BFFs with Amma, we have no idea what will. Of course since this was a Magical World of Disney movie, we had to watch the Michael Eisner intro. We also talked about the last time we watched one of these, which was when we watched The Richest Cat in the World, which was our very first for paid subscribers only episode. Because this movie was a Disney movie about alien encounters, it was only natural that we also watch some things about a Disney World that attraction that scared younger Amma: ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. The first thing we found was actually a clip from a Disney Channel show called Walt Disney World Inside Out (but we didn't realize that at all during the day of the recording and we were mystified by it). We wondered a lot about this mysterious "Scott" doing Serious Theme Park Journalism. Well, we found him, and it turns out now he's a documentary filmmaker and Bigfoot enthusiast whose trail name is Squatch. And this right here is why we do research. Because you just never know how odd a thing is going to be! Were you interviewed by Scott at Disney World in the mid-nineties? Let us know!Eventually we did find the official trailer for the attraction, which was very short and terrified a younger Amma. This attraction was later changed to a Lilo and Stitch theme and renamed Stitch's Great Escape. Now it is on a "seasonal schedule" which means it is basically permanently closed. We had a little discussion about Stitch and the case for nature vs. nurture, and Julia brought up Alien Resurrection as an instance of nurture winning over nature because of a xenomorph not killing Sigourney Weaver because it imprinted on her as its mother. This is not exactly what happened in that movie, but Julia's example really was from Alien Resurrection and not Alien 3 as Geoffrey wondered. … Not that Alien Resurrection is really a proponent of nurture over nature, though. That's pretty much all Lilo and Stitch's domain. Geoffrey also brought up the documentary currently in production: Life After the Navigator. This is not out yet, but we will 100% be watching it when it is!However, a thing that IS out right now is the music video for "Flight of the Navigator", a song by Childish Gambino, which was pretty depressing. We decided to end the commercial break by picking up the mood with a commercial Amma quotes every time she knows she's going on another Disney World vacation. And then Amma told us about how Barack Obama is a fan of the strawberry milkshakes the Parkesdale Market near Dinosaur World. So that's something we should all try sometime. For more Amma awesomeness, you can follow @ammamarfo on Twitter and Instagram! If you're having fun listening to us, please tell your friends about us! Amma Marfo, a comedian and comedy critic, invites Geoffrey and Julia to break in their brand new Disney+ accounts by watching Flight of the Navigator, a movie about a boy's adventure on a spaceship. Amma grew up in Florida (where this movie is set) and went to space camp! Wow! Julia and Geoffrey were excited to do this one as they both also had strong memories of it. So, in a rare move, EVERYONE wrote a hazy summary! Here's Amma's to start: "There are puppets or animatrons or something in this, that I know. I remember being freaked out that a kid is in a coma of sorts, and the rest of the world keeps going on around him. Maybe he went to space in that time? Maybe he thought he did? Either way, I'm pretty sure he goes back to space with the puppets/animatrons."Here's how Geoffrey remembered it:"It's the 1960s (the clean innocent part, not the drugs-war-sex part) and off-brand Elliot from ET is on vacation maybe with family and has a crush on a girl. Then things happen and he's in the 1980's. He disappeared or was asleep? Anyway, he's at a NASA lab now and learning about Twisted Sister (doesn't like them) and the government's experimenting on him. They also have a UFO. He sneaks off onto the UFO, and it turns out that the ship has a friendly wacky dentist lamp robot who runs it and goes around collecting things, including cute goo monsters. Not-Elliot for some reason has the navigation data the ship needs, so they go on a fun journey and turn the ship invisible and make it longer and more streamlined for advanced flight, and then go back in time so alter-Elliot can get killed in Vietnam or something and maybe almost he thinks it was all a dream except he still has a cute goo monster pet now?"And finally, Julia's take:"There's a boy who goes on a really cool spaceship when he's twelve in … I think the 70s because his mom drinks TAB?? and then several years pass on earth but for him it's really quick. When he gets back home, he's actually been missing and the entire world has changed. His little sister is now his big sister. His family is traumatized from having a missing child, and no one can explain why he didn't age, but they try to assimilate him back into their lives. There's also New Coke, which is a big deal. Eventually he goes back on the spaceship to have another adventure and try to go back in time so he won't actually have gone missing. I think it works? Also I think there are fireworks at one point? And I think the sister is a SUPER COOL eighties teen in the future part."We were fascinated to see how all of us took away different things from this one! And we were all right! And also, all wrong! Nobody was in a coma, the kid was never on vacation and definitely never thinks it was all a dream, there's no TAB at all, and New Coke was mentioned literally once as part of a list of Coke options. Julia was also conflating the main character's little brother (who is a big brother in the future part) with a random intern at NASA played by Sarah Jessica Parker. But to be fair, Sarah Jessica Parker was a SUPER COOL eighties teen in this movie. We talk about a bunch of stuff with this one, including whether this movie is more like Captain EO or Star Tours (or maybe… Soarin'???), and about how great an idea it is to use a 12-year-old as a USB drive despite the fact that the idea that we only use 10% of our brains is not true at all. Geoffrey also revealed that the dad used to be in a psychedelic band called Clear Light. After we got through our usual questions, we had a little verisimilitude Q&A with Amma about the realism of this movie's portrayal of Florida and NASA. Because if you have the chance to interrogate a Florida native who went to space camp, you don't wanna waste it! For more Amma awesomeness, you can follow @ammamarfo on Twitter and Instagram! Julia was also conflating the main character’s little brother (who is a big brother in the future part) with a random intern at NASA played by Sarah Jessica Parker. But to be fair, Sarah Jessica Parker was a SUPER COOL eighties teen in this movie. We talk about a bunch of stuff with this one, including whether this movie is more like Captain EO or Star Tours (or maybe… Soarin’???), and about how great an idea it is to use a 12-year-old as a USB drive despite the fact that the idea that we only use 10% of our brains is not true at all. Geoffrey also revealed that the dad used to be in a psychedelic band called Clear Light. Here’s their single, Black Roses. After we got through our usual questions, we had a little verisimilitude Q&A with Amma about the realism of this movie’s portrayal of Florida and NASA. Because if you have the chance to interrogate a Florida native who went to space camp, you don’t wanna waste it! Amma is also the author of The I’s Have it, a book detailing the importance of understanding the roles introversion and extroversion should play in our society. Comedy fan and critic Amma Marfo joins the Loud Women to talk about her favorite Aidy Bryant project, the Amazon series Danger and Eggs. This children's show is a model for inclusivity and representation... and it's really funny. The loud ladies discuss the messages Danger and Eggs is sending to children, both the subtle and not so subtle. (I mean... they literally explain confirmation bias to kids. It's unreal.) When was the last time you were creative? Did you take a moment to recognize your own accomplishment? Did you share that feeling with others? Creativity is a sticky subject; difficult to identify and harder to hone. And yet, we are surrounded by it, personally and professionally. In the season 2 finale of the Hashtag Higher Ed Podcast, Amma Marfo, speaker and consultant at Fun Enterprises, joins the show for a special in-studio episode to talk about all things creativity. We discuss how to recognize your own creativity, getting comfortable with sharing your projects and accomplishments, why higher education is ripe for new ideas, and how to breed an environment that lends itself to creative thinking.

Amma Marfo cracked me up several times on this podcast. It is no surprise then, that she describes herself as "thoughtful yet incurably silly." She also defines herself by three words: humor, creativity, and energy - something we talk about at the beginning of the podcast. Like many freelancers, she does so many things - she is a speaker, teacher, coach, and podcaster and has a lot of insight around the future of education and what helps people succeed in school. When we look for leadership characteristics, are we really building a workplace made for extroverts? We look for leaders to constantly speak up, network, and think on their feet. But what are we missing by excluding the strengths of introverts? Today on the show, we’re talking with Amma Marfo, a speaker, writer and editor, who thinks that we can do better. And she has a good idea of where we can start.
#JPSPEAKS: Social Justice & Inclusion Podcast for Higher Education Professionals
The 2017 kick-off episode is the perfect blend of fun, reflection, and resources that a new year needs. My guest Amma Marfo is a queen of content – from books and blogs to podcasts and newsletters. As a speaker, author and consultant in higher education she knows the creativity process means taking risk and projects failing are actually just part of the process. The priority she shares is creating relatable and real content, that includes the silly stuff. Amma is becoming well known for her work around supporting introverts, so we get to explore more about what it means to be an introvert versus an extrovert. She also can be found fostering online communities including the Summer Virtual Connection Circle, which comes to life as a Facebook group – not an easy task to moderate but like our podcast interview, with her wit and humor, Amma accomplishes so seamlessly.
