As #crimechatwithnatandkat continues their Female Serial Killer Series this season, here is your #teaser for this week covering two new femme fatales, in BONUS Episode 106: Female Serial Killers -- Irina Gaidamachuk “Satan in a Skirt” & Amy Archer-Gilligan “Arsenic and the Old Lace”!First, Nat takes us to Oblast, Russia, to reveal a monster lurking behind the eyes of one of its own, Irina Gaidamachuk. From 2002 to 2010, Gaidamachuk unleashed a wave of terror, brutally murdering 17 elderly women in their own homes while evading the law. This is the unsettling tale of how an ordinary facade hid a monstrous darkness, leaving a trail of fear and death in its wake. Then, Kat covers the true crime story that inspired the 1944 Cary Grant movie "Arsenic an the Old Lace." Amy Archer-Gilligan, a convicted murderer who had run a boarding house for the elderly. Sixty-six people died at that house between 1907 and 1916. When investigators exhumed five of the bodies—including her second husband's—autopsies revealed they had been poisoned with arsenic or strychnine.A #sneakpeek on these two cases airs #Saturday August 31, 2024, anywhere you get your favorite #podcasts! #googlepodcasts #amazonpodcasts #applepodcasts #youtubepodcasts #patreon #rss #spotifypodcastsBONUS episodes are ONLY available in FULL to our #VIPChatters who are subscribed #patreon. In this episode of Grating the Nutmeg, Natalie Belanger sits down with acclaimed crime writer M. William Phelps to get to the bottom of a notorious early 20th century Connecticut murder story. In the 1910s, Amy Archer Gilligan operated an innovative business in Windsor: a convalescent home for the ill and elderly. Her benevolent facade, however, hid a deadly purpose: a business plan that depended on constant inmate turnover, aided by arsenic poisoning. You'll hear all about how the case was broken by a neighbor who happened to write for the Hartford Courant, in a story involving midnight graveyard autopsies, poisoned lemonade, a shady doctor, and the birth of the Connecticut State Police. And oh yeah, the story got turned into a blockbuster Broadway comedy and a 1944 movie starring Cary Grant. On this episode we'll be talking about why you should never trust anyone in the medical field. Amy Archer-Gilligan and Harold Shipman took on different kind of patients, but they both came to the same conclusion, "these bodies don't have enough poison in them." Which is pretty shoddy medical work if I'm being honest. It doesn't take a whole PHD to figure that out. And if you've been disappointed by the competent police work recently, don't worry, that gets corrected in this episode. Enjoy!

It's Women's History Month and on this episode we go back in time to talk about a business pioneer, Amy Archer-Gilligan. Today, elderly care homes are common, but not back in the early 1900's. Amy's care home seemed to always be at max capacity but in order for Amy to keep making money she needed new residents. Old people, sometimes they can live a long time but that didn't quite fit Amy's business model. Elderly Care home or Murder Factory....let's just hope today's Elderly Care Homes aren't Murder Factories. Amy Archer-Gilligan was the proprietress of The Archer Home for Elderly People and Chronic Invalids, in Windsor, Conn., one of the first nursing homes in the U.S. But she may have been responsible for the intentional deaths of as many as 48 residents.
Amy Duggan Archer-Gilligan was born on October 31st, 1873 (spooky Halloween birthday vibes), and she ran a nursing home in Connecticut... before she was arrested for murder. The thing was that her residents kept on mysteriously dying after they had paid her for their stay. One of her victims was her second husband, Michael Gilligan; the others were residents of her nursing home. And here's the thing: she may have murdered up to 60 people. She was an Angel of Death-type killer, who didn't have a preference for victims of a specific gender or with certain physical characteristics. I think she was just in it for the money. She's a local legend in Connecticut to this day, so stick around to find out just how crazy her story is. Stay safe out there. Amy Archer Gilligan was a good Christian woman who ran a good Christian nursing home--if you substituted "good Christian" for "serial killer" that is. Strange Country co-hosts Beth and Kelly share this macabre story and show off their acting chops in a scene from Arsenic and Old Lace, a play and movie loosely based on Amy Archer Gilligan. You may have heard of the famous play that later became a movie called Arsenic and Ole Lace, but did you know that it was inspired by a true story? Of course, the true story isn't nearly as funny as the show. Today we talk about Amy Archer Gilligan who ran one of the first versions of a private nursing home... only many of her patients never made it out. Amy Archer-Gilligan owned and operated a home for elderly residents in Windsor, Connecticut, but fell deeply into debt. Over time, she developed a deadly business model - stealing money from residents, then poisoning them - ultimately killing more than two dozen victims over a two-year span.
Amy Archer-Gilligan opened a nursing home in Connecticut in 1907. By portraying herself as a kind and religious woman, she was able to recruit new residents. She was beloved in her neighborhood which is exactly why nobody suspected that she was a cold, calculated killer.
Bestselling true crime author M. William Phelps comes onto the podcast to tell us the story of Amy Archer Gilligan, a turn-of-the-century serial killer who disguised her sociopathic tendencies beneath a kind, neighborly facade. Her lemonade was laced with arsenic, and her convalescent home was not a place where anyone could get better. Also discussed: hot tub horrors, female criminals’ skyrocketing brutality (eek), and an amazing undercover lady cop named Zola. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
