A children's book called "Are You With Me?" with a father in angel wings on the cover. Published one year after Eric Richins' death. Promoted on local television by the woman convicted of killing him.The prosecution called it deflection. And it was. But this episode argues it was something far more psychologically complex: Kouri Richins building the version of reality she needed to inhabit. Not a mask over the truth — an alternate truth she constructed and moved into. And in that constructed reality, the grief was real. This is the second episode in a five-part breakdown of Kouri Richins' psychology. The 911 call that went from hysterical to composed in hours. The Google searches that read like a project manager's status report. The email she sent Summit County preemptively explaining away suspicion she could feel building. And the TV appearance that reveals the most disturbing thing about this kind of mind: the sincerity. She may have meant every word. And that's worse than if she'd been faking.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? *This is Part 2 of our series on the murder of Eric Richins. Start with Episode 1 if you haven't already. March 4th, 2022. Eric Richins, a 39-year-old husband and father, is found dead in his Kamas, Utah home. Toxicology reveals illicit fentanyl at five times the lethal concentration. He had no history of drug use. As the official investigation stalled, Kouri Richins — Eric's wife — quietly began filing claims on his life insurance policies. His family, unconvinced by the narrative she was spinning, hired a private investigator. What he uncovered changed everything. A pattern of financial fraud. Evidence of infidelity. A motive that had been building for years inside what looked, from the outside, like an ordinary Utah marriage. And then the friends started talking. The people Kouri had confided in, leaned on, and counted on to stand beside her, began telling Summit County authorities a very different story. In Part 2 of Are You With Me? — The Poisoned Marriage and Murder of Eric Richins — we follow the private investigation, the witness accounts, and the moment the case shifted from a stalled inquiry to a homicide prosecution. Send Kris and Rob a Text Message! In March 2022, Eric Richins was found dead in his Kamas, Utah bedroom. He was 39. He had four children. And he had enough fentanyl in his system to kill four people. His wife, Kouri Richins, told investigators she found him unresponsive. But prosecutors told a different story — one involving forged documents, fraudulent mortgages, multiple life insurance policies, and what they alleged was a prior poisoning attempt months earlier. Then came the detail that stopped the country: while awaiting trial for her husband's murder, Kouri Richins published a children's book about coping with loss. It was called "Are You With Me?" Kouri Richins, a 35-year-old Utah mother and real estate investor, was convicted on 16 March 2026 of murdering her husband Eric Richins (39) on 4 March 2022 by poisoning him with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl in a Moscow Mule cocktail. Born to engineer parents (father imprisoned for drunk driving when she was 6, mother a compulsive gambler), Kouri became obsessed with wealth and success. Prosecutors proved she was $7.5 million in debt with a collapsing house-flipping business, had affair with Robert Josh Grossman, took out $2.2 million in forged life insurance policies, purchased fentanyl through housekeeper Carmen Lauber, first attempted to poison Eric on Valentine's Day 2022 (failed), then succeeded three weeks later. Closed on $2 million mansion day after his death. One year later published children's grief book Are You With Me? and promoted it on TV before arrest May 2023. The jury came back guilty. For the family of Eric Richins, that word carries everything they fought for over four years of investigation, hearings, and trial. And yet the questions that settle into a family after a verdict like this — they don't disappear when the gavel comes down. This week on Hidden Killers, we look at what the conviction of Kouri Richins means for the people who were closest to Eric — and for the community that followed this case from the beginning. A jury found that Kouri Richins poisoned her husband with fentanyl. She had, in the time after his death, written and published a children's grief book — "Are You With Me?" — about a father who dies and becomes a firefly. She appeared on morning television. She performed the grief in public, in print, and in front of cameras. What happens to that book, and its royalties, now that its author has been convicted of killing the man it was written about?Carmen Lauber, who allegedly supplied the fentanyl, walked with an immunity deal. For a family that spent years seeking accountability, how does that land?Retired FBI Behavioral Analysis Chief Robin Dreeke joins Tony Brueski to address the question that may matter most to the people who loved Eric Richins: Does Kouri believe she did something wrong? Is there any version of accountability happening inside that cell — or is she, as the behavioral pattern suggests, already constructing a narrative where she's still the one who was wronged? The verdict gave Eric's family justice. The truth of who Kouri Richins is — that's what this episode is about.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? This week in Hidden Killers' Week in Review, the behavioral analysis that matters most on the Kouri Richins case goes beyond the trial record and into the psychological architecture underneath it — the compulsion to perform grief publicly, and the documented history of victims who recognized what was being done to them and couldn't escape it anyway. After prosecutors say Kouri Richins killed her husband, she wrote a children's book. "Are You With Me?" A father who dies and becomes a firefly. She appeared on morning shows. She performed. Tony Brueski examines that behavior through the case that documents the narcissist's narrative compulsion at its most explicit — Nancy Crampton-Brophy, who published an essay in 2011 titled "How to Murder Your Husband," discussing methods and motivations under her real name, then shot her husband Daniel twice in the chest seven years later. The essay was excluded from her trial. The jury convicted her anyway. She bought the gun with traceable purchases. She drove herself to the crime scene. The need to be recognized as clever — to be seen — overrides the operational instinct to disappear. Kouri wrote herself as the bereaved mother. Nancy wrote herself as the expert. Both stepped into public light that ultimately exposed them. The victims' side of that dynamic is equally documented. Eric Richins told people after Valentine's Day 2022 that he believed Kouri was poisoning him. He had been violently ill. Prosecutors say she killed him with five times the lethal dose of fentanyl approximately a month later. Bobby Curley, in a hospital on September 22, 1991, physically grabbed a nurse and said clearly: "Please help me. My wife is trying to kill me. She is not as she seems." He died the next morning. Joann had been poisoning his iced tea with thallium for nearly a year — eleven months confirmed by hair analysis, nine hundred times the lethal dose — while collecting a $1.7 million settlement two days before he died. Both men named it. The behavioral framework that explains why naming it wasn't enough is the work this week's coverage does.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke spent his career reading deception in real time. His "Tempo Tells" framework identifies verbal and nonverbal deviations that reveal when someone is performing rather than authentically responding. In this episode, we apply that framework to fourteen months of Kouri Richins' public behavior after Eric's death—ending with her May 2023 arrest. The 911 call is clinical material. "He's not breathing, he's cold, he doesn't have a pulse." Robin explains what trained investigators listen for in emergency calls: tempo deviations, detail calibration, emotional authenticity markers. High-stress environments make sustained performance difficult. What did Kouri's call reveal—and what did it conceal? Then came the children's book. "Are You With Me?" was published in March 2023, one year after Eric's death and two months before Kouri's arrest. Robin analyzes what choosing that level of public grief performance reveals about confidence in one's own deception—and the compounding risks of extended media exposure. The "Walk the Dog" letter found in Kouri's jail cell in September 2023 allegedly outlines specific false testimony for her mother and brother to deliver. When someone continues orchestrating deception from behind bars, what does that reveal about their relationship with truth itself?Three years of court appearances have led to this moment. Robin provides the behavioral roadmap for what to watch across weeks of trial proceedings—where sustained deception typically breaks down under cross-examination, and what separates genuine emotion from performance when someone's freedom depends on the verdict.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? During that window, she maintained public innocence through media interviews, investigator conversations, and a children's book promotional tour featuring Eric as an angel watching over their sons. Robin's "Tempo Tells" framework is built to read exactly this: the verbal and nonverbal deviations that reveal performance under stress. The 911 call is where analysis begins. In March 2023, Kouri Richins appeared on television promoting a children's book she'd written. Are You With Me? featured her husband Eric as an angel-winged father watching over their sons. Two months later, she was arrested for his murder. Six months after that, prosecutors found a letter in her jail cell allegedly scripting false testimony for her family.Robin Dreeke's FBI career was built on reading deception in high-stakes situations. His "Tempo Tells" framework identifies the patterns that reveal when someone's narrative is constructed rather than authentic. In this Hidden Killers conversation, we apply that lens to Kouri's post-death behavior—fourteen months of maintained innocence, public grief performance, and alleged witness manipulation from behind bars. The 911 call offers the first window. Robin explains what investigators listen for: tempo deviations, detail calibration, the specific verbal patterns that distinguish authentic emergency responses from performance. Then came the media interviews. The book tour. The television appearances. What does choosing to perform grief publicly at that scale reveal about someone's confidence in their deception—and their risk tolerance? The "Walk the Dog" letter changes everything. Prosecutors allege it outlines specific false testimony Kouri's mother and brother were supposed to provide. When someone continues orchestrating the narrative from a jail cell, what does that reveal about how they process truth?Three years of legal proceedings. Bail hearings. Evidentiary motions. Jury selection. Nobody maintains perfect behavioral control indefinitely. Robin explains where the architecture starts to break—and what twelve jurors should watch for over five weeks of trial.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Twelve jurors will watch Kouri Richins for five weeks starting February 23rd. FBI behavioral analyst Robin Dreeke provides the framework for reading what they'll see—the tells that separate genuine emotion from performance, and where sustained deception starts to break.Today's focus: Kouri's behavior after Eric's death. The 911 call where she reported him unresponsive. The media interviews during the investigation. The children's book Are You With Me?—featuring Eric as an angel-winged father—promoted on television in March 2023, two months before her arrest. And the "Walk the Dog" letter prosecutors found in her jail cell, allegedly scripting false testimony for her mother and brother.Robin's "Tempo Tells" framework examines exactly this kind of evidence. What verbal patterns in a 911 call reveal authenticity versus performance? What does choosing to perform grief publicly—through a book tour, through television appearances—signal about someone's confidence in their own constructed narrative? And critically, what happens to deception architecture under three years of sustained legal pressure? The 911 call is clinical material for investigators. Robin explains what they listen for: tempo deviations, detail calibration, emotional markers. Emergency situations are high-stress environments where performance is difficult to maintain. The jail letter changes the analysis. When someone continues orchestrating narrative from behind bars—allegedly scripting specific testimony for family members—what does that reveal about their relationship with truth? Robin breaks down how that kind of evidence typically impacts jurors.Five weeks of testimony begin this Sunday. Send us a textNew Orleans' own Cowboy Mouth—the self-described “southern gospel revival without the religion”—are bringing their high-energy rock ‘n' roll celebration back to St. Louis this Saturday, November 8th, for a one-night-only show at the Old Rock House. The stop marks part of their Cover Yo' Azz album tour and coincides with their 35th anniversary—a milestone for one of America's most enduring and electrifying live bands. Tickets available here. For those who've never witnessed the frenzy firsthand, Cake Magazine captured it best:“On a bad night they will blow the roof off the place. On a good night Cowboy Mouth will save your soul.”Frontman Fred LeBlanc, along with John Thomas Griffith, Brian “Bruiser” Broussard, and Frank Grocholski, have built their reputation not just on loud guitars and big choruses—but on turning every show into a life-affirming party that leaves the audience breathless and grinning. And this weekend's St. Louis stop promises exactly that.A New Album, 11 Years in the MakingEarlier this year, Cowboy Mouth dropped their first album of newly recorded material in over a decade—Cover Yo' Azz, a rowdy and reverent collection of cover songs that honors some of rock's most influential artists. The ten-track record reimagines tunes by R.E.M., The Who, Queen, Frank Sinatra, Cher, The Replacements, Fats Domino, and even Hootie & the Blowfish, featuring a guest appearance by Hootie's Mark Bryan on guitar. The band breathes New Orleans grit and charm into each song, turning classics like “The Real Me” (The Who) and “Can't Hardly Wait” (The Replacements) into punchy, modern rock anthems. The album is available now on Spotify and SoundCloud.Critics have been quick to applaud the band's approach. Mystic Sons praised it as “a joyride dressed in ripped denim,” while York Calling called the album “charismatic, soulful, and expertly performed.” Americana Highways perhaps said it best:“Performed with expertise, finesse, and style... the album summed up is a hoot.”Fred LeBlanc Joins The Tippy Jo ShowAhead of the St. Louis concert, Cowboy Mouth's larger-than-life frontman Fred LeBlanc joined Tippy on The Tippy Jo Show, part of The Barn Media's podcast lineup. The conversation dove deep into the band's legacy, their Louisiana roots, and Fred's signature onstage energy that transforms every Cowboy Mouth performance into something between a rock concert and a revival meeting.True to form, Fred's humor and humanity shone through the interview—equal parts laughter, storytelling, and that unmistakable “let it go” spirit that has powered Cowboy Mouth since their debut album Are You With Me? in 1992.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Kouri Richins, a Utah children's book author accused of fatally poisoning her husband with fentanyl in 2022, will remain behind bars after a judge denied her bail request. Richins, who wrote a book on coping with grief called *Are You With Me?* following her husband's death, faces charges of aggravated murder and attempted murder. During a hearing in Utah's 3rd District Court, Judge Richard Mrazik outlined his reasons for rejecting Richins' bond request. “There simply are not reasonably available means of mitigating her risk to the community and to herself or the strong incentive for her to flee the jurisdiction of the court,” Mrazik said. He emphasized the severity of the charges and her diminished ties to the community as critical factors in his decision. Prosecutors accuse Richins of spiking a cocktail she made for her husband, Eric Richins, with a lethal dose of fentanyl. They also claim she attempted to kill him previously, on February 14, 2022, by giving him a drugged sandwich. Eric Richins, a father of three, died at their home near Park City, a small mountain town known for its scenic beauty. Richins was arrested in 2023, just a year after her husband's death, and gained further attention for her public appearances discussing her family's grief. Her book, marketed to help children deal with the loss of a loved one, has become a focal point in media coverage of the case. The defense team, led by attorney Kathy Nester, argued that the case against Richins is weakening. “With two charges dismissed and four others severed, the defense stands more confident. The case against our client is rapidly narrowing, exposing deeper weaknesses with each step,” Nester said. Judge Mrazik dismissed two counts of distributing a controlled substance and agreed to separate four real estate-related fraud charges from the upcoming murder trial. However, he denied a motion from the defense to try the murder and attempted murder charges separately. The judge also refused a motion to increase the jury size from the standard eight to twelve members. Despite acknowledging that Utah's law “may be on the wrong side of history,” Mrazik said he is bound by his oath to uphold it. The trial, set to begin in April 2025, will cover multiple charges, including aggravated murder, attempted murder, two counts of filing fraudulent insurance claims, and one count of forgery. To ensure a fair jury pool, both the prosecution and defense agreed to select jurors from a broader geographic area, spanning Salt Lake and Summit Counties. Richins' defense team emphasized her connections to the area and disputed the notion that she poses a flight risk. However, Judge Mrazik pointed to several concerns, including her loss of business and strained relationship with her children, which he said could increase her motivation to flee. "Structurally, she just doesn't have the same connections to the community that she had then," the judge concluded. Richins remains in custody, awaiting her day in court, as both sides prepare for what promises to be a closely watched trial. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Utah Children's Book Author Kouri Richins to Stand Trial for Alleged Murder of Husband A Utah mother of three who published a children's book about grief after her husband's death has been ordered to stand trial on charges of murder, attempted murder, and other crimes in relation to his death. Kouri Richins, 34, has been accused of drugging her husband's Valentine's Day sandwich in February 2022 in an alleged murder attempt that he survived, and then spiking his cocktail with a fatal dose of fentanyl 17 days later. Prosecutors have also alleged that Richins was in debt when she fraudulently obtained a $2 million life insurance policy on her husband before his death. She was charged with multiple counts of fraud and forgery in connection with the allegations. Richins has pleaded not guilty to the charges and has previously claimed innocence, telling "Dateline" this year that she had been taken away from her "babies." "This means war," she said. Despite her claims of innocence, a judge has ruled that prosecutors have shown probable cause to try Richins on the allegations of financial crimes and murder charges in the death of her husband, Eric Richins, 39. Richins' trial is scheduled to begin in the last week of April. One year after her husband's death in March 2022, Richins published a children's book called "Are You With Me?" which sought to help children struggling with the death of a loved one. The book follows the story of a child who has lost their father, but is reminded that his presence still exists all around them, just like an angel watching over them. The case has drawn significant attention due to the tragic circumstances surrounding Eric Richins' death and the allegations against his wife. The trial is expected to be closely watched by the public and the media as it unfolds. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Kouri Richins Breaks Silence from Jail, Criticizes Prosecutors and Proclaims Innocence

Kouri Richins, the Utah mother accused of spiking her husband's cocktail with a fatal dose of fentanyl, has made her first public comments since her arrest last year. In a series of jailhouse statements provided exclusively to "Dateline" this week, Richins criticized prosecutors, asserted her innocence, and described recent upheaval in the case as “forced.” Richins, 34, who has been held in the Summit County Jail since a judge denied her bail last year, expressed frustration over being separated from her family. “I've been silent for a year, locked away from my kids, my family, my life, living with the media telling the world who they think I am, what they think I've done or how they think I've lived,” she said. “And it's time to start speaking up. You took an innocent mom away from her babies. And this means war.” The comments come after a judge granted her lawyers' request to withdraw from her defense against charges of aggravated murder and other crimes in the death of her husband, Eric Richins, 39, on March 4, 2022. Richins' lead attorney, Skye Lazaro, cited an “irreconcilable and nonwaivable situation” as the reason for the withdrawal. In one statement, Richins said she was filled with “great devastation” over her defense team's withdrawal. “My defense team has been forced to withdraw from my case. Represented or not, we all know and should understand there's only so much I can say. But what I will say is this withdrawal was not my choice. And it was not a personal choice of any counsel on my defense team.” The withdrawal request was filed the same day Richins' lawyers asked a judge to disqualify prosecutors due to “severe violations” that compromised their defense and violated Richins' constitutional right to effective counsel. The filing alleges that from May to December last year, authorities recorded jail calls between Richins and her lawyers without their consent, some of which were listened to by prosecutors. When defense lawyers discovered the practice and questioned prosecutors, Summit County's top elected prosecutor, Margaret Olson, initially denied awareness. However, lead prosecutor Brad Bloodworth later claimed that one of the defense lawyers had refused to use a phone app that shields attorney-client calls, resulting in the recordings. Bloodworth asserted that prosecutors had not listened to the calls and suggested that by not using the app, the lawyer had seemingly consented to the practice. Richins accused prosecutors of doing "anything they can to prolong this process and hide their corruption. I will not play into the prosecution's unconstitutional behavior anymore." She expressed a strong desire to clear her name, stating, “Although I am extremely disappointed where we're at right now with this case, I'm anxious. I'm anxious to prove my innocence. I'm anxious to get to trial.” Olson's office responded to the allegations, labeling the defense lawyer's motion to disqualify prosecutors as "materially inaccurate" and "filed in bad faith." The county attorney's office plans to address the motion formally by May 31. Prosecutors allege that Richins, deeply in debt, fraudulently obtained a nearly $2 million life insurance policy on her husband before giving him a Moscow mule spiked with a lethal dose of fentanyl. They also charged Richins with attempted murder, forgery, and mortgage and insurance fraud. One year after Eric Richins died, Kouri Richins published “Are You With Me?” a children's book about grief, dedicated to her “amazing” husband. Despite the charges, Richins and her family have maintained her innocence. #KouriRichins #EricRichins #FentanylPoisoning #TrueCrime #ProsecutorialMisconduct #JusticeSystem #Dateline Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Shocking revelations have emerged in the case of Eric Richins, a Utah man allegedly poisoned to death by his wife, Kouri Richins, in March 2022. Unsealed search warrants have shed new light on the circumstances surrounding Eric's tragic demise, uncovering disturbing details about the events leading up to his death.    Kouri Richins, 33, faces grave charges of aggravated murder and drug possession after she was accused of killing her husband, Eric, with illicit fentanyl in their Kamas, Utah, residence. Eric, who had been married to Kouri for nine years and shared three children with her, tragically lost his life on March 3, 2022.    The recently unsealed search warrants reveal unsettling findings that raise questions about the circumstances of Eric's death. According to a Summit County detective's report, it was discovered that Eric had a small amount of Quetiapine (brand name SEROQUEL) in his stomach contents at the time of his death. The alarming aspect was that Eric did not possess a prescription for Quetiapine, but his wife did, and the pills were readily available in their home.  Quetiapine is classified as an antipsychotic medication used to treat various mental health conditions, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It acts by balancing the levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. However, the medication is known to carry a range of potentially dangerous side effects, such as hyperglycemia, fever, stroke, pain, seizures, and more.    Prosecutors in the case have suggested that Eric's murder may have been financially motivated, revealing a troubling backdrop to the tragic events. According to court documents, the couple had been embroiled in financial disagreements, particularly related to Kouri's desire to acquire a $2 million mansion that was under construction at the time. Her plan was to purchase the property, renovate it, and then sell it for a profit.    However, Eric believed the mansion's price was exorbitant, a sentiment that his family conveyed to investigators. Additionally, Kouri had taken out four different life insurance policies on Eric's life between 2015 and 2017, totaling more than $1.9 million. Notably, on January 1, 2022, just months before Eric's tragic death, Kouri clandestinely altered the beneficiary of a $2 million life insurance policy, making herself the recipient without Eric's authorization.    Before his death, Eric had removed Kouri from his will and designated his sister as the new beneficiary, a move that suggested he had concerns about his safety. His family informed authorities that he had feared for his life, citing previous incidents where Kouri allegedly attempted to poison him, once several years ago in Greece and again on Valentine's Day 2022.    Following Eric's untimely death, Kouri authored a children's book titled "Are You With Me?" This book, listed on Amazon for $14.99, is described as "a must-read for any child who has experienced the pain of loss, and for parents who want to provide their children with the emotional support they need to heal and grow."    The unsealed search warrants have added a new layer of complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings in this high-profile case. Eric Richins' tragic death continues to be a subject of intense scrutiny, as investigators delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding his alleged poisoning and the subsequent legal actions against his wife, Kouri Richins.
