When Todd Gabler took the stand, the defense came at him with everything they had. Attorney Kathy Nester spent her entire cross-examination trying to reframe his investigation as something corrupt — accusing him of being an extension of the Sheriff's Office, a rogue actor operating without the legal constraints that bind law enforcement. The implication was clear: if the jury believed Gabler was working as a state agent, the evidence he gathered could be challenged.Gabler didn't flinch. He told the court he's never been a state actor, never will be. He pointed to his 34-year track record. He explained that the information flowed one direction — from him to police, never the other way. And when Nester pressed him on his methods, he fired back: "I don't need law enforcement to babysit me."But that courtroom moment only tells part of the story. Before Gabler ever sat in that witness chair, he spent over a year doing the work the Sheriff's Office hadn't finished — finding key figures, searching the home, tipping off detectives, building the evidentiary foundation that helped lead to an arrest. In Part 2, Gabler tells Tony what it was like to hand over the case on two hard drives and then watch the defense try to burn it down.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Description: The trial is over. The conviction is on paper. And yet, inside that courtroom at sentencing, Kouri Richins' defense team argued as if the fight was nowhere close to finished.Defense attorney Wendy Lewis opened by addressing what the court couldn't ignore — the absence of remorse. Her answer was direct: Richins can't express remorse for something she maintains she didn't do. Lewis also told the judge this was the first time in her career that she'd watched a client she genuinely believed to be innocent walk out of a courtroom convicted. Whether that lands as heartfelt conviction or strategic positioning, it was a moment that stopped the room. The defense's sharpest shots were aimed at the prosecution's sentencing memorandum. Lewis and Nester called it a "character assassination" — an attempt to define Richins through information that was never tested at trial. Lewis pushed back hard: sentence her on the convictions, not on a narrative the state built outside of evidence. "They do not know Kouri Richins," she said. Attorney Nester echoed that, asking the judge to look at who Richins actually is — not the monster portrayed by both the prosecution and the victim's family. The defense made a pointed statistical argument against life without parole. Of the 72 people serving that sentence in Utah, only five killed a spouse. Lewis argued the maximum penalty is reserved for serial killers and child murderers, not this case, and that the state's trial evidence never reached the threshold required to justify it.Richins' mother wrote a letter, read aloud in court, calling her daughter incapable of murder and asking — from one mother to anyone listening — for a sentence that includes the possibility of parole.Attorney Nester confirmed the defense intends to appeal. So no, this isn't over. Not by a long shot.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? By the time you reach a sentencing hearing, the jury has already spoken. The defense knows that. Which makes what Kouri Richins' attorneys said in that courtroom even more worth paying attention to.Attorney Wendy Lewis led the charge, and she didn't soften a single word. Her argument on remorse was blunt: you cannot ask someone to be sorry for something they insist they didn't do. Lewis told the judge this was the first case in her entire career where she watched a client she fully believed to be innocent get convicted. That's not a throwaway line — that's a setup for an appeal, and everyone in that room knew it. Attorney Kathy Nester confirmed it outright: the defense disagrees with the verdict and intends to appeal. Before they got to the sentence itself, the defense went after the prosecution's pre-sentencing filing with both hands. They called it a "character assassination" — a document stuffed with information that never appeared at trial, designed to paint a picture of Richins the jury never officially evaluated. Lewis asked the judge to discard that narrative and focus only on what was actually proven. "They do not know Kouri Richins," she said.On the sentencing range, the defense made their position concrete. Life without parole, they argued, is not for cases like this. Of 72 Utahns currently serving that sentence, only five killed a spouse. That penalty is reserved for serial killers and child murderers — and the evidence in this trial, the defense contended, didn't come close to clearing that bar. Nester asked the judge to see Richins as a person, not the "monster" the prosecution and the victim's family had described. Then came the letter from Richins' mother — a plea, plainly written, asking for 25-years-to-life. A sentence with a door still attached. The court heard all of it. Then it ruled.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In this episode of Hey Amarillo, we sit down with Paige Nester, the owner of Creek House Honey Farm—a place that's so much more than its name suggests. What started as an apiary has grown into a full experience: a farm, café, event venue, shop, and home to everything from handcrafted mead to skincare products. Paige is thoughtful, sharp, and genuinely funny, and our conversation follows the path of how she built something so multifaceted—and how it continues to evolve. We talk about the story behind that long name (it means more than you'd think), the unexpected and fascinating history of the land they're on, and what it really looks like to grow a business that's both rooted and constantly changing. And of course, we talk about bees—their importance, the benefits they bring, and the very real challenges of working with them.

A few weeks ago, I followed my boys as they walked into the house, and one of them said, “Man, I love home.” And the other said, “Me, too. Home is pretty great.” I tried to play it cool and thankfully didn't cry because that would have embarrassed them so much. But it got me thinking - why do they love home? Why do any of us love being home? I was able to identify a couple of things that surprised me, and I'm excited to share those thoughts with you today. Send a textColin and Russ revisit the Kouri Richins case, continued from Ep. 117. Ms. Richins is on trial for murder, and the centerpiece witness for the prosecution is Ms. Richin's housekeeper who testified that she supplied Ms. Richins with the fentanyl she used to kill her husband. Colin and Russ discuss the strength of this testimony and how the defense is attacking the star witness' credibility. The attorneys also make their predictions about whether Ms. Richins will be convicted or not. Check it out!
The defense in the Kouri Richins trial has 35 witnesses ready to testify. But after weeks of devastating cross-examination that exposed investigative failures, witness contradictions, and questions about whether this case was outcome-driven from the start—do they even need them all?Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke welcome defense attorney Bob Motta back to Hidden Killers Live for analysis of where this trial stands. The defense hasn't presented their case yet, but they've already accomplished something significant: establishing that critical forensic tests were never performed, that the prosecution's key witness changed her story after receiving immunity, and that a detective told Carmen Lauber "the goal is to convict Kouri for aggravated murder."Dr. Erik Christensen admitted under cross-examination that hair follicle testing could have determined whether Eric Richins was a long-term fentanyl user—and that those results would have factored into his manner-of-death determination. The test was never done. The copperware from the Moscow Mules was never tested. An empty hydrocodone bottle in Eric's nightstand was never analyzed. The toxicology showed no oxycodone in Eric's system—only fentanyl. The defense hasn't denied Kouri sought pills; attorney Kathy Nester said in opening that Kouri obtained oxycodone at Eric's request for chronic pain. If Carmen provided oxycodone but Eric died of fentanyl, where did the fatal dose come from?Robin Dreeke brings his FBI behavioral expertise to the discussion. Bob Motta breaks down whether reasonable doubt is already established or if the defense risks peaking too early. With 35 witnesses waiting and the prosecution still not finished, this trial could go in multiple directions. What do Nester, Lewis, and Ramos need to accomplish when it's finally their turn?Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The prosecution's key fentanyl supplier has recanted. No pills were ever recovered. No pills were ever tested. The death certificate lists manner of death as unknown. And yet Kouri Richins is on trial for murder.Opening statements revealed the competing narratives that will define this case. Prosecutors showed jurors memes allegedly found on Kouri's phone the morning Eric's body was removed—"I'm rich"—while their sons were still upstairs unaware. They pointed to a fifteen-minute gap before the 911 call, the phone unlocked six times. Nearly two million in life insurance allegedly taken out without Eric's knowledge. An affair with Josh Grossman. Caribbean vacation plans for the month after his death. Internet searches about women's prisons and lie detector tests.Defense attorney Kathryn Nester responded by playing Kouri's 911 call—raw, sobbing, barely coherent. She attacked Carmen Lauber's credibility, noting she allegedly changed her story only after police threatened prison time. Lauber has been granted immunity. Her own dealer signed an affidavit claiming he sold OxyContin, not fentanyl. The Moscow mule glasses were never tested. The house was never searched for fentanyl.Nester closed with an optical illusion—either a young woman or a witch. The state would show them the witch, she told jurors. She'd reveal a widow.Eric's sister testified Kouri was composed and business-focused while the family collapsed. Eric's friends will testify he told them eighteen days before his death that he thought his wife tried to poison him. An orange notebook containing Kouri's own "firsthand account" of Eric's death may be admitted.Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta analyzes every pressure point in a case built on compromised witnesses and circumstantial evidence.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Defense attorney Kathryn Nester came out swinging in opening statements of the Kouri Richins murder trial, systematically attacking the prosecution's evidence chain and the credibility of their key witness. The legal battle lines are now drawn for what could be a five-week trial with a woman's life hanging in the balance.Nester's strategy centers on Carmen Lauber, the woman who allegedly sold Kouri fentanyl. According to the defense, Lauber changed her story only after police threatened her with prison time. More damaging still: Lauber's own drug dealer later signed an affidavit claiming he sold her OxyContin, not fentanyl. If Lauber never had fentanyl, how could she have sold it to Kouri? The defense highlighted critical gaps in the investigation. The Moscow mule glasses Eric allegedly drank from on the night of his death were never tested for fentanyl. The Kamas home was never searched for the drug. The medical examiner's death certificate lists manner of death as unknown—not homicide.Nester painted Eric Richins as a man battling Lyme disease, chronic pain, and dependence on prescription painkillers—a profile that could explain fentanyl exposure through contaminated street drugs rather than deliberate poisoning. She played Kouri's 911 call for the jury: raw, sobbing, desperate.Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth countered with alleged memes found on Kouri's phone the morning Eric's body was removed, a fifteen-minute delay before calling 911, $4.5 million in debt, an affair with Josh Grossman, and internet searches about women's prisons and lie detector tests.Eric's sister Katie Richins-Benson testified about Kouri's allegedly cold, business-focused demeanor while the family grieved. The defense challenged her memory and noted the family invested $100,000 in a private investigator.Carmen Lauber and Josh Grossman testimony still to come.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The shortest day so far in the Kouri Richins murder trial may have been the most consequential. In less than an hour of testimony, defense attorney Kathy Nester exposed significant gaps in the investigation that are central to the prosecution's case against the Utah mother accused of fatally poisoning her husband with fentanyl.Crime scene technician Chelsea Gipson confirmed that a hydrocodone bottle recovered from Eric Richins' nightstand was never tested for fentanyl residue. She also confirmed that the kitchen where Kouri allegedly prepared the drink prosecutors say delivered the fatal dose was not photographed. No drug paraphernalia of any kind was found in the home on the day Eric died. And Gipson agreed that it's common for people to hide illicit drugs in prescription pill bottles — a key concession that supports the defense's theory that Eric may have unknowingly or knowingly had access to fentanyl independent of his wife. The courtroom's most dramatic moment came during questioning about phone recordings when Gipson asked if Nester was referring to "jail calls." The defense immediately moved to strike the comment, and Judge Mrazik instructed jurors not to speculate about the defendant's custody history. But the reference was already on the record in the jury's minds. An unexpected early recess ended the day before noon. Gipson returns to the stand for continued cross-examination in a trial expected to last into March.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
The defense came out swinging in the Kouri Richins murder trial and didn't waste a single minute. Attorney Kathy Nester used her cross-examination of crime scene technician Chelsea Gipson to expose a pattern of investigative gaps that go straight to the heart of the prosecution's case.A hydrocodone bottle from the victim's nightstand was never tested for fentanyl. The kitchen — central to the prosecution's theory that Kouri spiked a Moscow mule — was never photographed. No drug paraphernalia was found in the home. Items were moved during scene processing. And Gipson confirmed under oath that people commonly conceal illicit drugs inside prescription pill bottles, supporting the defense's argument that Eric Richins may have had his own access to fentanyl. The most explosive moment came when Gipson casually asked Nester if she was referring to "jail calls" while being questioned about recorded phone conversations. The defense moved to strike immediately. Judge Mrazik instructed the jury to disregard, but the damage was done — twelve jurors heard the word "jail" connected to the defendant from the prosecution's own witness.Court ended early due to unforeseen circumstances, cutting Nester's cross short. She returns Thursday with momentum and a growing list of evidence gaps that the prosecution hasn't addressed. This episode breaks down everything that happened, what it means for both sides, and why forty minutes of testimony may have just changed the trajectory of this trial.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Defense attorney Kathy Nester made every minute count in her cross-examination of lead crime scene technician Chelsea Gipson, targeting the physical evidence at the foundation of the prosecution's case and revealing a series of investigative gaps that could define the rest of the Kouri Richins murder trial. The headline revelation: a hydrocodone bottle found in Eric Richins' nightstand was never tested for fentanyl. In a case where the prosecution alleges Kouri killed her husband by slipping fentanyl into his drink, the defense established that the most obvious container near the victim's body went unexamined. The kitchen where the allegedly fatal Moscow mule was prepared was never photographed. The sink was never documented. No drug paraphernalia was found. And Gipson acknowledged that it's common practice for people to hide illicit drugs inside prescription bottles — a critical concession for the defense's argument that Eric may have had independent access to fentanyl.Evidence handling also came under fire. A wallet was moved to the nightstand from the kitchen during processing. The bedsheet with blood on it was in evidence, but the defense established it was disturbed because Kouri followed 911 dispatcher instructions to pull Eric from the bed for CPR. Not all items in the home were confirmed to have been documented. The day's most charged moment came when Gipson referenced "jail calls" during cross-examination, leading to an immediate motion to strike, a sidebar, and a judicial instruction to the jury. The early dismissal means Gipson returns Thursday, where Nester is expected to continue pressing on the investigation's thoroughness. This is dedicated daily coverage of the Kouri Richins trial from Hidden Killers. Day 1 of the Kouri Richins murder trial delivered competing narratives that will define the next five weeks in a Park City courtroom.Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth opened with a gut-punch — three memes allegedly found on Kouri's phone the morning Eric Richins' body was removed from their home. One read "I'm rich." Their three boys hadn't been told. Bloodworth presented alleged evidence of $4.5 million in debt, an affair with Josh Grossman, text messages about marriage and Caribbean vacations, internet searches for luxury prisons, and a fifteen-minute delay before calling 911.Defense attorney Kathryn Nester countered with the raw 911 audio of Kouri sobbing and telling the dispatcher her husband was cold. She dismantled the prosecution's reliance on key witness Carmen Lauber, who allegedly never mentioned fentanyl in her original statement and changed her story only under threat of prison. Lauber's own dealer recanted in a sworn affidavit. No fentanyl was found in the home. The Moscow mule glasses were never analyzed. The death certificate lists manner of death as unknown. And at 10 p.m. on the night Eric died, his friend said he sounded completely normal on the phone.Katie Richins-Benson's testimony anchored the day emotionally, describing Kouri as composed in matching pajamas while the family shattered around her — allegedly pushing to close on a mansion and sell their home while her brother's body was barely out the door. The defense challenged Katie's recollections and flagged the family's $100,000 private investigator as evidence of a coordinated effort.Nester showed the jury an optical illusion and told them the prosecution would see a witch where she sees a widow. Carmen Lauber and Josh Grossman have yet to testify.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Paul Greenyer, Gareth Wilson and Craig Nester are high flyers in the world of landscape design and contracting. Greenyer is director of Paul Greenyer Consultancy and carries out design and build landscape work as well as being an RICS-accredited expert witness and mediator.Wilson is an independent expert witness, hard landscaping expert and garden consultant and is known for his Chelsea gardens. And Nester is a design and build specialist with his firm Habitat Landscapes. While their routes into the industry are different, they share a hurdle over which they have all had to jump - having ADHD (attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder). In the discussion with Rachael Forsyth, the three offer disarmingly frank accounts of the ways ADHD has affected their lives and the people the love, live with and work with. They explain some "symptoms" of the condition and share some of the strategies they have employed and evolved that have helped them first "cope" and ultimately "thrive" and excel in their chosen professions.Podcast producer: HortWeek digital content manager, Christina TaylorPodcast presenter: HortWeek senior reporter, Rachael ForsythMake sure you never miss a HortWeek podcast! I'm joined today by good pal Pete Nester. We're officially ACTUAL friends now, not just Facebook friends, because we've hung out, broken bread together, stood in a crowd and sung our hearts out, and hugged! I thought it would be fun to recap the weekend with Pete to get his thoughts as well as mine. Also included in the episode are chats I had with Maggie Clifford and Jeff Slate. I did chat to Shine and to Jake also, but due to technical difficulties, I couldn't use those recordings! But, I'm lining up a plethora of conversations for the coming weeks with artists who performed at the Tom Petty Weekend! I already miss Gainesville and can't wait to come back next year! House hushing is a decluttering method that aims to create peaceful spaces in your home by reducing visual noise. Visual noise refers to anything excessive, jarring, or inharmonious in your environment, such as clutter, mismatched colors, or loud patterns. According to interiors blogger Myquillin Smith of The Nester, "Everything in your room has a voice… taking up visual, physical and even emotional space. Quieting your space removes all those voices in a room at once." Why is house hushing beneficial? And how do you hush a house? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! President Trump Planning The Triumphal Arch For Washington DC And Tim Nester From The National Center On Sexual Exploitation Is With Us
In this episode of Hidden Killers with Tony Brueski, we go deep inside the courtroom drama unfolding in Utah—the state's capital murder case against Tyler James Robinson, the man accused of assassinating political figure Charlie Kirk during a public event at Utah Valley University. Robinson, just 22 years old, now faces aggravated murder and six additional felony charges. According to prosecutors, he left a note, allegedly confessed via text, and was tied to the weapon with forensic evidence. The state has made it clear: they're seeking the death penalty. But here's where the story shifts from headlines to process. Robinson is being represented by Kathryn Nester, a former federal public defender appointed by Utah County after Robinson was found indigent. According to multiple reports, Nester may be joined by nationally recognized capital attorneys Michael Burt and Richard Novak—though official court records haven't yet confirmed their formal entry. This isn't about politics. It's about law. In this video, we examine: Why the Constitution requires a strong defense—even in emotionally charged, politically volatile cases. What makes a capital case different from a regular murder trial. How the prosecution plans to prove premeditation and political motivation. What the defense will likely challenge, from forensic chains to digital records. The next legal steps: preliminary hearings, motions, jury selection, and a possible penalty phase. This isn't just about guilt or innocence. It's a test of the entire justice system under maximum pressure. Whether you support the prosecution or are simply watching for truth, this is the story behind the story—where law meets reality. Subscribe for full coverage of the Robinson trial, including analysis from legal experts, forensic breakdowns, and behind-the-scenes strategy. #CharlieKirk #TylerRobinson #TrueCrime #DeathPenaltyCase #LegalAnalysis #JusticeSystem #CapitalMurder #CourtroomDrama #HiddenKillers #DueProcess Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
