This is a recording from the Woodturners Worldwide Online Symposium. As a proud member of America's favorite home improvement team since 1986, general contractor Tom Silva has provided years of expert advice to home enthusiasts across the country on This Old House and Ask This Old House.Renovating houses since he was a child, Tom's first major project, working alongside his dad and brother, was installing a basement fallout shelter underneath their 1787 Colonial in Lexington, Massachusetts. After digging out the 20x40x12-foot hole under the house, by hand, and hauling away all the boulders, they framed it and finished it off. “It took us two years, and I felt such pride in what we had accomplished that I knew I wanted to do this for a living,” says Tom.Silva Brothers Construction, made up of Tom, his father, and brother Richard, built the original set for the WGBH-TV Boston production The Victory Garden in the parking lot of WGBH. Russell Morash, the creator of This Old House, discovered the Silva crew while they were conducting a major restoration on an 1845 Greek Revival-style house. It was then that Russ named Tom and his crew the general contractors for the show.“Each job is unique and different, which is just what I like,” says Tom. “Besides loving my work, I've made good friends with the entire crew of This Old House, and it's been a rewarding experience.”Parents of a daughter and a son, Tom and his wife live in a 19th-century house he continues to renovate in a Boston suburb. He is a native of Massachusetts and a boating enthusiast.Follow Tom on Facebook, Twitter @TomSilvaTOH, Instagram @tomsilvatoh, and on TikTok.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/WoodturnersWorldwide)

This Old House has been the gateway experience for countless numbers of building science enthusiasts and we’d wager many of you listeners have intersected with the show at some point in your life and career. Media, whether television or podcasting, is about so much more than sharing information - it’s about telling stories. And the important stories are the ones that change paradigms and facilitate progress in the world. Join Kristof as he interviews Chris Ermides of This Old House and the Ask This Old House podcast about leveraging stories to create meaning and context for anyone building a home. Chris Ermides: Chris Ermides joined This Old House in December 2018 as the editor of pro content. Since then, he’s written and produced a wide array of digital content, including articles and videos geared towards professional tradesmen and women. He is the host of the Ask This Old House podcast, the Idea House Build series, and many interviews on This Old House: Live. His interest in home improvement began at the age of 6 when he accompanied his dad to the local hardware store on the weekends and helped him on projects around the house. It was during this time that he also started watching This Old House and New Yankee Workshop. The trades have been a strong part of his family for several generations—Chris’s grandfather, an immigrant from Greece, was a cobbler and his great grandfather was a carpenter in Greece. While studying English in college, Chris worked full-time at a local hardware store before graduating with a Master’s degree in teaching English. He went on to teach high school and middle school English while working as a house painter and repairman during the summers. After four years of teaching, Chris returned to the trades starting with a brief stint on a ranch in Wyoming. His career path continued to evolve on jobsites, working his way up from a laborer to carpenter and eventually site supervisor for a custom home builder in upstate New York. He combined his love for the trades and writing chops with his jobsite experience and became an editor at Fine Homebuilding and Tools of the Trade. He’s been a contributor to JLC, Deck Builder, and ToolBox Buzz. Throughout his career he’s reported on many aspects of residential construction including how-to, tools, materials, and building science.Follow Chris on Instagram @ChrisErmidesTOH.

He's often seen 'walking the property' and loves to care for their yard. Theresa is not a lawn expert, and sees a landscape as art in terms of color, shape and texture. So we've invited two landscaping experts to join Mark & Theresa to talk about lawns and yards. Chris Lambton and Roger Cook are diving in to share favorite mowers, spring planting tips, landscaping pet peeves, ways to enjoy a yard, water conservation issues, and dealing with the new view of what is a 'lawn.' Chris Lambton is DIY Network's 'Yard Crashers' host and landscaping expert. A Cape Cod native, he and his wife Peyton Lambton hosted 'Going Yard' on HGTV. Often seen on The Weather Channel with his landscaping expert dad, Chris' passion for yardscaping is infectious. Roger Cook is the landscape contractor for the Emmy Award-winning This Old House, and appears on its sister show, Ask This Old House. Roger motivates aspiring green thumbs and inspires stumped professionals with expert advice learned over the course of a lifetime in landscaping.

What do DIY TV hosts build at their own homes? We ask This Old House and Ask This Old House's Kevin O'Connor what he DIYs when he's not on TV with Tom Silva, Norm Abram, Rich Trethewey, and Roger Cook. Starting out as a guest on Ask This Old House, Kevin became host of the both shows and works side-by-side with “Tommy and the guys". He's  seen first hand what it takes to bring a This Old House project to life. From urban remodels to country homes, plumbing nightmares to luscious landscapes Kevin take us through the process of building and fixing our homes from frame to finish to final details. But what does he build, make and fix when the cameras aren't rolling and the clients aren't there?

We're lacing 'em up for the love of the game with Rebuilding Together inside Handy Magazine's tricked-out Tool Test Zone at The National Hardware Show in Las Vegas. To help us fix householder problems we'd love to solve, Ask This Old House producer Chris Wolfe takes us behind the scenes--and behind the walls. And Sleep Innovations stops by to let us test out their new Stanley-branded utility mat that is supposed to keep us working on our DIY list longer and happier. Make-it-right-Mike Mike Holmes rips it down, builds it back and frames up his passion for the game of getting' it done. And takes a break from his standard seriousness to tease Mark about his watch and his passion for moving fast. Football all-pro-all-hustle Pro-Bowl player Jack Youngblood kicks the mud out of his cleats and huddles up to talk leadership, endurance, and the game of life. He also shares insights into kids and football. We're taking time to start talking about our favorite annual contest, the Tradesperson of the Year from Rebuilding Together, which honors a professional who gives back with tools, cash and two tickets to the Super Bowl.
