Ever wondered what Foreigner's biggest hit was? Or why they were called Foreigner in the first place? Maybe you'd like to know if there are any original members left and what happened to their lead singer? Did you see the band finally being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame? All of these questions and more answered this week as Foreigner co-founder Al Greenwood joins us for a chat. Al is best known as the keyboardist of the iconic rock band Foreigner, formed in 1976 alongside Mick Jones, Lou Gramm, Ian McDonald, Ed Gagliardi, and Dennis Elliott. His classical training and experience in jazz and progressive rock were essential in crafting the band's sound, which blended hard rock with sophisticated keyboard arrangements. During his time with Foreigner, Al contributed to the band's first three multi-platinum albums: "Foreigner" (1977), "Double Vision" (1978), and "Head Games" (1979). He co-wrote several of the band's hit songs, including the classic tracks "Cold As Ice" and "Blue Morning, Blue Day." After parting ways with Foreigner in 1980, Al didn't step away from the music scene. He went on to co-found the band Spys in 1981, a group known for their blend of rock, pop, and new wave influences. With Spys, Al continued to showcase his skills as a songwriter and keyboardist, releasing two albums that received critical acclaim for their innovative sound. Beyond his work with that band, he became a sought-after session musician, arranger, and producer, contributing to various artists across different genres. Al's work in the music industry also expanded into composing for film and television, where his versatility allowed him to create scores that resonated with a wide audience. His legacy with Foreigner, combined with his later projects, has cemented his reputation as a pioneering figure in rock music, particularly in integrating synthesizers into the genre. Today he plays with the 'new' Foreigner with singer Kelly Hansen out front. He says they're an act to behold. Al also tells us that the biggest thrill of his life has been the original band's induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame very recently and although it's long overdue, he's incredibly proud to have finally been recognised for the contribution that Foreigner made to the rock sound of the '70s. I hope you'll enjoy my chat with Al as he unravels much abut one of our best loved band's history.

Kelly Hansen joined the band Hurricane in 1985 after responding to a local ad in the newspaper. The band then went on to sign with Enigma/Capitol during the late eighties and racked up five Top 20 MTV music videos and even a top 40 single, "I'm On To You". After Hurricane disbanded, Kelly performed in a group with Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille, toured as a music director and backing vocalist with Liane Foly, and composed music for television. After Lou Gramm left Foreigner in 2003 due to ongoing disputes with Mick Jones, Hansen became their lead singer in 2005. He is now the third lead singer of Foreigner, with Lou Gramm and Johnny Edwards his predecessors. So after an incredible 17 year run, we got to talk with "the new guy" once again! Foreigner is seemingly playing every nook and cranny of Pennsylvania on their upcoming tour, but we caught Kelly on break from the road, relaxing at home. He told us about the stresses of touring so often, what he has to do to protect his voice, and of course... what he's been up to in the cooking realm (he is a former Celebrity Rock Star Champion of the popular tv show Chopped). Check him out!

We finish up our Foreigner themed podcasts with interviews with Kelly Hansen and Lou Gramm. Foreigner is one of the most popular rock bands of all-time and Gramm sang on the original recordings and Hansen has been the lead singer of Foreigner for over a decade. The two appeared together onstage for the fist time last year during Foreigner's 40th anniversary tour.
"It was a really special and unique challenge to be able to put this show together and to record it and I think it came out really great," enthused Foriegner vocalist Kelly Hansen ahead of the release of the bands most ambitious album/DVD to date, Foreigner With the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. "It was a month long process in planning, first with making the arrangements and making sure they were arrangements that would fit the music properly and also making song choices because some songs were more suited towards the orchestra than others. There was all that and there was the rehearsals and trying to figure out the details of actually recording a live orchestra with a live rock band simultaneously in the same room and then filming it so there were a lot of elements that went together. It was very challenging."Undertaking a project such as this can be an extrememely arduous and time consuming period of your life, and as such it is important that each band member is on the same page and, more importantly, willing to put the extra time in. Thankfully, Hansen says, each member of Foreigner approached the project with equal enthusiasm."Everybody was really into it," he affirmed. "I mean, how many times in your life will you get to do something like this?"To hear a more in depth analysis of the recording of the album and DVD, including difficulties faced with sonically merging a live band and orchestra, as well as details on the Australian tour later this year, the different dynamics between performing as a band and performing with a full orchestra behind you as well as some of Hansen's memories of taking over the vocal duties from Lou Gramm, tune in to the attached audio.Foreigner With the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is out now.Kris Peters
On this edition of Fort McMurray Matters, RMWB Communication Strategist Jordan Redshaw discusses Wednesday's Information Session focusing on the statement of claim deadline and Kelly Hansen, Senior Operations Manager with Canadian Red Cross talks about new programs being added.
Answering an ad seeking a lead vocalist, Kelly joined Hurricane in 1985. Signed to Enigma/Capitol during the late eighties and early nineties, Hurricane recorded three critically acclaimed albums, racked up five Top 20 MTV videos and landed the top 35 single, "I'm On To You". After Hurricane disbanded, Hansen worked in a group with Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille, toured as a vocal group arranger and backing vocalist with Liane Foly for her album, Caméléon and composed music for television. As the new lead singer in Foreigner, Hansen explains, "the best part about being in this band is getting the chance to do something I feel I was meant to do. I feel extremely fortunate to be given this wonderful opportunity to play with such a substantial group of people, and it just keeps getting better. I think there are times in life where the right combination of people come together at the right time, through luck, timing or for some other unknown reason to create something magical. What happens onstage with this group of guys is something that is rare and palpable. It's like the old saying, "if I have to describe it, you wouldn't understand." Kelly reflects on his tenure in Foreigner: "I think we've done an amazing amount of work since 2005—we worked our asses off for 6 years and people have rediscovered us. I'm told there has been a huge increase in radio airplay that has propelled us into the Top 10 at Classic Rock Radio. Our appearances on video games such as Rock Band and parents turning their kids on to music they love have been a big help. When people come to our show we give them an energetic, action-packed show, which is fun to experience."
Kelly Hansen joins us to discuss his career. From his early days, to forming Hurricane (and their four albums), working with Stuart Smith in Heaven & Earth, Unruly Child, Into The Light (with past guest Tim Donahue) and joining Foreigner (and his 13 years in the band).
On September 13th, 2017 Foreigner's catalog sales were celebrated in Business Insider magazine as hitting the Top 40 among the Best Selling Music Artists of All Time. The Beatles were justifiably #1, but Foreigner came in ahead of Britney Spears, Bob Dylan, Phil Collins, Prince, Queen, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. With ten multi-platinum albums and sixteen Top 30 hits, Foreigner is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales, now exceeding 75 million. Responsible for some of rock and roll's most enduring anthems including Juke Box Hero, Cold As Ice, Hot Blooded, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Feels Like The First Time, Urgent, Head Games, Say You Will, Dirty White Boy, Long, Long Way From Home and the worldwide #1 hit, I Want To Know What Love Is, Foreigner continues to rock the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard Top 200 album success. Foreigner also features strongly in every category in Billboard's Greatest of All Time listing. Catalog sales often eclipse those of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Aerosmith and most of their Classic Rock peers. (Source: Nielsen SoundScan week ending 8/3/17). Founded in 1976, Foreigner's debut album produced the hits “Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice” and “Long, Long Way From Home.” The album Double Vision followed, as did a string of hits like “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero” and “Waiting For A Girl Like You.” Those songs helped give Foreigner's next album, 4, its impressive run at #1 on the Billboard chart. At the zenith of 80's sound, Foreigner's fifth album, Agent Provocateur, gave the world the incredible #1 global hit,” I Want To Know What Love Is.” This musical milestone followed the record-breaking song “Waiting For A Girl Like You.” At Foreigner's core is the founder and Songwriters Hall of Fame member Mick Jones, the visionary maestro whose stylistic songwriting, indelible guitar hooks and multi-layered talents continue to escalate Foreigner's influence and guide the band to new horizons. He reformed the band after a 2002 hiatus and selected lead singer Kelly Hansen to help write an inspired new chapter in the history of Foreigner. One of rock's greatest showmen, Hansen is known for his innate ability to connect with the crowds. As a front man and lead vocalist, Hansen is among the most respected, consummate professionals in rock and roll. With a 35-year career that spans almost every area of music, from the role of lead vocalist to producing and engineering, Kelly has the unique ability to advance and excel when faced with new challenges! @ForeignerMusic @TheMickJones

Mick also brought in bassist Jeff Pilson, multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel, guitarist Bruce Watson, Michael Bluestein on keyboards, and Chris Frazier on drums. An unprecedented new level of energy lead the group to a re-emergence of astounding music that speaks to long time Foreigner fans and younger generations. With renewed vitality and direction, Foreigner hit the Billboard charts again with the 2005 release of their live greatest hits album, Extended Versions. Can't Slow Down followed in 2009 and entered the Billboard chart in the Top 30, driven by two Top 20 radio singles, “In Pieces” and “When It Comes To Love.” To follow was the release of the band's 3-disc set, Feels Like The First Time, which included an acoustic CD with an intimate and unique re-interpretation of many Foreigner classics, studio re-records by the new lineup and a live performance DVD showcasing the group's exceptional live energy. Foreigner experienced another surge in popularity when several of their hits were featured on the Rock of Ages soundtrack, including “I Want To Know What Love Is,” “Juke Box Hero” and “Waiting For A Girl Like You” – more songs than any other one band on the soundtrack. Hollywood quickly took note, and several more tracks were featured in hit films “Anchorman 2,” “Magic Mike” and “Pitch Perfect,” sending Foreigner downloads up 400%. The video game industry was soon to follow with the blockbuster release, “Grand Theft Auto V”. Downloads continued to soar after their worldwide #1 hit “I Want To Know What Love Is” was featured as the 2015 season finale end title of “Orange Is The New Black.” Foreigner hits have also recently been included in such primetime TV shows as “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” among others. He formed the band "Hurricane" with bassist Tony Cavazo, singer Kelly Hansen and drummer Jay Schellen. Robert has worked with such legends as Jimmy Iovine, Bob Ezrin, and Robert Stigwood. He has also worked with reggae artist Garland Jeffreys and the late Sam Kinison on his "Leader of the Banned" album. But there's more! Robert is also a music producer and film composer, including "The Hiss" and "The Collector." In 2013, Robert joined Geoff Tate's lineup Queensryche GT, which brought him together with his famous bassist brother, Rudy. We talk to Robert about his playing, his monster tone, and the gear he has used through the years.

When people come to our show we give them an energetic, action-packed show, which is fun to experience." Quotes from Kelly talking about the new "Feels Like The First Time" 3-Disc Album: "This is an extra rubber stamp on our claim to these songs You are constantly having to re-establish yourself. There was a time in the late 90s when the band suffered in reputation, and I think we've spent a good part of the last six years going all over the world to re-establish that this band is very strong and relevant and full of great songs." "We were doing these live acoustic shows that were being broadcast," he recalls, "and we got a huge response. It was kind of shocking and surprising, and also something that was really new for us. We've never really done that, kind of laying yourself out naked, without lights and amps or anything. It was a real different feeling and a challenge, so we came back and decided to record it. We're still working out the details for touring but it should be interesting." #Slackermorningshow101thefox #Foreigner

A group of local storytellers, Emily Sterling, Kelly Hansen, Kenny Field and Zoe Pilliafas wondered: "Is it possible that when your memory begins to cloud, you hold on more strongly to memories of your truest love? When the distraction of life’s mundane memories disappears are you left with the distillation of your life’s truest love?" These storytellers felt it was time for them to share the stories of the residents of The Emerson House Dementia Care Facility on Division Street. They interviewed and photographed these residents and found that "in memory loss, in aging, in an assisted living facility, there can be beauty, grace, dignity, and great adventure." In February, they displayed these stories and photographs in an exhibit titled, "What is the Love of Your Life?" at Portland Grind. It explored passions outside of an intimate relationship as the secret to a happy life. Tune in to learn all about this project and be challenged to explore, what is the love of your life!!!
