First off...the legislation came into force recently but was enacted some time ago (26 October 2023) under the Conservative Government but time was given for tech companies to react and for the body charged with enforcing it (Ofcom) to get its act together. As such it should be Michelle Donelan who is the target for the ire as Peter Kyle can only deal with what has been legislated. I would contend that Gareth is guilty of shooting the messenger here. Turning to age verification and the bit about a Government ID system...off the top of my head I can think of at least 5 Government Departments where I am already uniquely identified....by NI Number, Driver's Licence Number, Passport Number, UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), National Health Number. None of the departments/systems seem to talk to each other (except that there is a link between Passport and Driving Licence systems for the sharing of pictures) and each stores the same information about me. Given that everyone is given a NI number around the time of their 16th birthday this would seem to be the logical place for any age verification call to be made. But then again when has logic applied to anything that gets done in this country. Ian Barton on Rclone A kind of super powerful version of rsync. A command-line programme to manage files on cloud storage. It is a feature-rich alternative to cloud vendors' web storage interfaces. Over 70 cloud storage products support rclone including S3 object stores, business and consumer file storage services - as well as standard transfer protocols. Rclone has powerful cloud equivalents to the unix commands rsync, cp, mv, mount, ls, ncdu, tree, rm, and cat. Rclone's familiar syntax includes shell pipeline support, and --dry-run protection. It is used at the command line, in scripts or via its API. Users call rclone "The Swiss army knife of cloud storage" and "Technology indistinguishable from magic". I use it to download all my documents and photos to a server at home, which makes sure there are at least two backups of every document (there are two computers that each have a backup). Because rclone has so many options it can be difficult at the start. However, some Googling will usually find a script that does what you want. The boys are on fire this week. Discussion begins with iPhone 17 rumours and whether Apple are playing it too safe with their lineup of phones for 2025. This leads onto a conversation about how Apple have a hold over consumers and don't really have to push smartphone technology far anymore due to the fact that people just blindly buy them anyway. But with Samsung's new foldable lineup out, the boys chat about how this is the first time a foldable can be recommended to the general consumer and beyond the tech bubble. The sleeker design, more natural cover screen ratio and improved main camera all lend themselves to being the perfect phone for Apple users to switch to. Alex got a new M4 MacBook Air and spoke of how the M4 chip really surprised him in the lightweight package, and the boys generally discuss how Apple's computers over some of the best value for money to performance ratio of any laptops out there. Leak culture was up next, and the boys weigh in on Apple vs Jon Prosser and how leak culture has influenced content creation in general. David takes a dig at how no one actually cares about Samsung to leak, Daniel loves his MacBook Pro, and Alex tells Samsung how to fix the Fold 8. All that and more on this week's Minus Sixteen! On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we catch up on all of the latest rumors about Apple's first foldable iPhone amid a multitude of reports about the device and its launch firming up for next year. Apple's foray into foldable smartphones has been rumored for many years, but it looks like the rumors will finally come to fruition next year. Full-scale prototyping of the device reportedly began last month, Samsung has begun production on the OLED displays destined for the foldable, and it is now believed to be on track to reach launch alongside the iPhone 18lineup in 2026. The first foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch outer display, a unique hinge system, two rear cameras (wide and ultra wide), one front-facing camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID. It is likely to be 4.5mm when unfolded, and between 9mm and 9.5mm when folded. For comparison, the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 4.2mm when unfolded, and 8.9mm when folded. It also features three rear cameras, instead of Apple's anticipated two. However, Apple is apparently seeking to outdo Samsung with a "crease-free" display thanks to an innovative design that uses a metal plate to disperse and control the stress generated by bending the display. This would be an industry first. It is expected to cost $1,800 to $2,000. Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $1,999.99. Take control of your finances with Copilot Money. The boys are back to talk all things Samsung. Two weeks post Galaxy Unpacked, the boys have a lot to...well..unpack as each of them got to experience what Samsung had to announce in their own special ways. Alex & Daniel give their first-hand account of using the Galaxy Z Fold 7 for the past 2 weeks, whilst David discusses his first time at a Samsung event and getting to see how Samsung have innovated in the Foldable space. It pondered a larger question around whether Apple are bringing that excitement anymore into the tech space and whether they can consider themselves at the forefront of innovation anymore. David rants about Apple while Daniel defends them (what world are we in?), and we get some insights into the broader tech world and how Apple infiltrates every space consumers live in. Alex gives a warning about security as he fends off an attack on his YouTube channel. Summer phone season kicks off with Samsung's latest launch. Jake, Vee, and Allison talk about Samsung's new lineup of foldables, including the very thin new Z Fold 7 and Allison's disdain for the Z Flip 7 FE. Vee has impressions of Samsung's new Galaxy Watch 8 lineup and its squircle-y new redesign. Then, it's time to talk Big Tech shakeups. Apple's COO is leaving, Zuckerberg is buying himself an AI dream team, X's CEO is out — and its chatbot Grok is on a rampage. Finally, big things are in store for the Lightning Round… which shall henceforth be known as the THUNDER ROUND. Lots to talk about, including Lorde's CD problems, Apple's Liquid Glass changes, and HBO Max finally becoming HBO Max again.
