TFIYE Ep#199: Release The Kraken Bunnies! In this episode, hosts Tim Trotter and Nate Foo kick things off with casual banter about their recent woes, including health issues (Tim's skull pains and chiropractor visits, Nate's headaches), matching flat tires on his and his wife's car, extreme California heat (109°F), and AC repairs. Tim shares details on his upcoming mini-vacation to Great Wolf Lodge for water slides, while Nate vents about tire shop hassles and worn treads potentially voiding warranties. They compare road noise in Washington vs. California highways and mention quirky musical roads that play tunes like the William Tell Overture via speed berms. The conversation shifts to major life updates: Tim recounts a grueling week helping his mom prepare for an estate sale on her 35-acre property following his father's passing. He describes hauling massive amounts of accumulated items, including a full shipping container, prepper supplies, barns full of tools, knives, flashlights, old hard drives, MacBooks (like a PowerBook G3), and endless cables. He highlights the emotional and physical toll, plus discoveries like forgotten family ashes. Nate discusses his brother-in-law's dying PC, which has led to piecemeal part replacements, essentially building a new rig. He also reveals last-minute travel drama for PAX West in Seattle: his cousin's sudden divorce forced him to book expensive hotels near Sea-Tac. Nate mentions a side trip to Vancouver, WA, for a family birthday, and they note the coincidence of both being near Great Wolf Lodge areas (though not overlapping). They reflect on reaching Episode 199, teasing the milestone 200th next time, and how they've recorded ~150 episodes together. They geek out over 56K modems, recalling dial-up sounds, specs, and modern USB versions still sold for ~$40 on Amazon for fax needs. They reminisce about connection speeds rarely hitting 53K due to phone line limits. Star Trek App: Nate shares an iOS RSS reader called "Stars" styled after TNG's LCARS interface (beeps, boops included), which Tim already uses weekly. They tie it to Star Trek's influence on iPads. Smartphones & Hardware: Discussion on Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 (now as thin as a regular phone when folded) and Flip; Nate plans to upgrade from his Z Fold 5 despite a center crease crack. They speculate on Apple's potential foldable (maybe an iPad Mini-like device or flip phone), rumors of an ultra-thin "iPhone Air," MagSafe changes, and a possible M4-powered Apple TV. Nate praises a $250 4TB Samsung Evo 870 SSD. Gaming & Apple: They lament Apple's slow gaming push, praising Digital Foundry's coverage of Mac performance (e.g., Cyberpunk on M1+ chips matching 30-series NVIDIA cards in efficiency). They dream of an Apple gaming console or updated Apple TV for titles like Death Stranding. The episode wraps with editing woes (Nate's Audacity setup vs. potential GarageBand switch) and family interruptions in Nate's studio. Clocking in shorter than usual, it's a mix of personal rants, tech nostalgia, and forward-looking gadget hype, ending on their signature "Get forked." This episode highlights the hosts' enduring friendship amid chaos, with plenty of laughs over shared absurdities like "kraken bunnies" (rabbits with papillomavirus horns).    Join The Fork Family On Discord: https://discord.gg/CXrFKxR8uA Remember to give us a review on iTunes or wherever you downloaded this podcast from.

Gareth and Ted reunite for another show. This week more on the Uk Online Safety act Gareth lost his shit about last week. First off...the legislation came into force recently but was enacted some time ago (26 October 2023) under the Conservative Government but time was given for tech companies to react and for the body charged with enforcing it (Ofcom) to get its act together. As such it should be Michelle Donelan who is the target for the ire as Peter Kyle can only deal with what has been legislated. I would contend that Gareth is guilty of shooting the messenger here. Turning to age verification and the bit about a Government ID system...off the top of my head I can think of at least 5 Government Departments where I am already uniquely identified....by NI Number, Driver's Licence Number, Passport Number, UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), National Health Number. None of the departments/systems seem to talk to each other (except that there is a link between Passport and Driving Licence systems for the sharing of pictures) and each stores the same information about me. Given that everyone is given a NI number around the time of their 16th birthday this would seem to be the logical place for any age verification call to be made. But then again when has logic applied to anything that gets done in this country. Ian Barton on Rclone A kind of super powerful version of rsync. A command-line programme to manage files on cloud storage. It is a feature-rich alternative to cloud vendors' web storage interfaces. Over 70 cloud storage products support rclone including S3 object stores, business and consumer file storage services - as well as standard transfer protocols. Rclone has powerful cloud equivalents to the unix commands rsync, cp, mv, mount, ls, ncdu, tree, rm, and cat. Rclone's familiar syntax includes shell pipeline support, and --dry-run protection. It is used at the command line, in scripts or via its API. Users call rclone "The Swiss army knife of cloud storage" and "Technology indistinguishable from magic". I use it to download all my documents and photos to a server at home, which makes sure there are at least two backups of every document (there are two computers that each have a backup). Because rclone has so many options it can be difficult at the start. However, some Googling will usually find a script that does what you want. AJ Santos on YouTube now second only to BBC as media destination YouTube has become the UK's second most-watched media service, behind only the BBC, according to Ofcom's annual report. 20% of Generation Alpha - aged four to 15 - turn to YouTube first when switching on their SmartTV. The boys are on fire this week. Discussion begins with iPhone 17 rumours and whether Apple are playing it too safe with their lineup of phones for 2025. This leads onto a conversation about how Apple have a hold over consumers and don't really have to push smartphone technology far anymore due to the fact that people just blindly buy them anyway.   But with Samsung's new foldable lineup out, the boys chat about how this is the first time a foldable can be recommended to the general consumer and beyond the tech bubble. The sleeker design, more natural cover screen ratio and improved main camera all lend themselves to being the perfect phone for Apple users to switch to.   Alex got a new M4 MacBook Air and spoke of how the M4 chip really surprised him in the lightweight package, and the boys generally discuss how Apple's computers over some of the best value for money to performance ratio of any laptops out there.   Leak culture was up next, and the boys weigh in on Apple vs Jon Prosser and how leak culture has influenced content creation in general. David takes a dig at how no one actually cares about Samsung to leak, Daniel loves his MacBook Pro, and Alex tells Samsung how to fix the Fold 8.   All that and more on this week's Minus Sixteen!   Get in touch: david@talkingtechandaudio.com Check out the new website: https://talkingtechandaudio.com     #wwdc #apple #samsung #iphone16e #iphone #iphone #youtube #contentcreator   Chapters 00:00 Intro 02:50 iPhone 17 leaks & rumours 09:42 The Apple ecosystem - does it work? 12:51 Apple's services - the hidden winner 14:25 Will the Fold 7 be enough to convince iPhone users to switch? 17:35 Apple Care 1 18:33 Alex and his S24 battery issues 22:30 How much better can Apple make a foldable phone? 23:51 The floors on the Fold 7 29:00 Are we ready to spend £2000 on a phone? 31:50 The M4 MacBook Air 35:45 Apple and its 256GB storage issue 36:40 Daniel & his MacBook Pro story 43:03 Working and editing from an external SSD 45:05 Apple's Q3 results 48:30 The Jon Prosser leak story - our thoughts 53:10 Did Jon Prosser offer money in exchange for leaks? 55:11 Thoughts on large companies suing individuals/ 56:20 In Apple's defence… 58:35 Daniel's experience of NDA's 63:00 Samsung is closing some loopholes  64:00 Dyson secrets 65:00 The iPhone 17 is out in the wild

On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we catch up on all of the latest rumors about Apple's first foldable iPhone amid a multitude of reports about the device and its launch firming up for next year. Apple's foray into foldable smartphones has been rumored for many years, but it looks like the rumors will finally come to fruition next year. Full-scale prototyping of the device reportedly began last month, Samsung has begun production on the OLED displays destined for the foldable, and it is now believed to be on track to reach launch alongside the iPhone 18lineup in 2026. The first foldable ‌iPhone‌ is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display, a 5.5-inch outer display, a unique hinge system, two rear cameras (wide and ultra wide), one front-facing camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID. It is likely to be 4.5mm when unfolded, and between 9mm and 9.5mm when folded. For comparison, the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 4.2mm when unfolded, and 8.9mm when folded. It also features three rear cameras, instead of Apple's anticipated two. However, Apple is apparently seeking to outdo Samsung with a "crease-free" display thanks to an innovative design that uses a metal plate to disperse and control the stress generated by bending the display. This would be an industry first. It is expected to cost $1,800 to $2,000. Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $1,999.99. Take control of your finances with Copilot Money. Summer phone season kicks off with Samsung's latest launch. Jake, Vee, and Allison talk about Samsung's new lineup of foldables, including the very thin new Z Fold 7 and Allison's disdain for the Z Flip 7 FE. Vee has impressions of Samsung's new Galaxy Watch 8 lineup and its squircle-y new redesign. Then, it's time to talk Big Tech shakeups. Apple's COO is leaving, Zuckerberg is buying himself an AI dream team, X's CEO is out — and its chatbot Grok is on a rampage. Finally, big things are in store for the Lightning Round… which shall henceforth be known as the THUNDER ROUND.
