In this episode, we discuss the Mavs' 120-106 victory over the Sacramento Kings in 9/10 game of the Play-In Tournament to advance to the second Play-In game against the Memphis Grizzlies for a chance to make the 2025 NBA Playoffs as the 8th seed. We talk about Klay Thompson's inspiring 23-point performance, exorcising his demons of past Play-In games. We also discuss Anthony Davis' up-and-down performance, in which he finished with 27 points and 9 rebounds. We also talk about the defensive frontline of Davis and Dereck Lively and how that might stack up against Memphis' front court of Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. We then pivot to talking about the closed door media event held by the Mavs in which Nico Harrison and CEO Rick Welts addressed select members of the media with cameras prohibited. It was an embarrassing moment and yet another PR disaster in which Harrison still could not properly justify his bizarre decision to trade Luka Dončić to the Lakers two months ago. We talk about how this might be the first signs that Mavs Governor Patrick Dumont may be realizing the scale of the crisis Harrison created for his franchise.
NBA Insider Marc Stein joins Adam Mares to talk Luka Doncic's return to Dallas and what the Mavericks' playoff chances look like with Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, and Dereck Lively back in the lineup. Marc also shares insights on Taylor Jenkins' dismissal, the Carmelo Anthony Hall of Fame leak, and some of the best revenge games in NBA history—from Dominique Wilkins to Charles Barkley and Dikembe Mutombo.Read Marc Stein's Revenge Gamer article here: https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-nba-revenge-game

Brian Schottenheimer vs Kellen Moore and Dan Quinn. Mavs lose to the Timberwolves and Dereck Lively is out for 2-3 months. Below the Belt: NFL end of year awards nominees.
In this episode we discuss the Mavs' 115-114 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, their 10th loss in the last 15 games. The game was perhaps overshadowed by the devastating news that Dereck Lively will miss 2-3 months with a stress fracture in his ankle, adding to this “season from hell” which has seen several Mavs starters suffer significant injuries. We talk about how this news changes the expectations for this season and how it might alter their approach to the trade deadline in two weeks. We also share our thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of Jason Kidd as a coach and how he may not be elevating the team to their full potential during this depleted stretch. Finally we debate where the Mavs should consider punting on this season and focusing on draft positioning.

ALREADY? But not without yours truly getting into every nook and cranny on what is happening in the sports universe as the latest podcast has arrived! On deck: (6:48) We're down to the final three games of the NFL season. Two will be played on Sunday as Championship Sunday is on the horizon. I'll uncover the big storylines (Chiefs chasing history. Is it Josh Allen's time? Will the Commanders magic carpet ride lead them to New Orleans? Can Philadelphia get back to the Super Bowl?) preview both games and predict who'll face one another down in the Big Easy for Super Bowl LIX. I'll get into the coaching hires that have taken place (Ben Johnson to Chicago and Aaron Glenn to the Jets) Why the Glenn hire was a good one, but it comes with a caveat? The Jaguars fired their GM Trent Baalke in light of Buccaneers OC Liam Coen passing on their head coaching position. Where do they go from here? (40:27) Ohio State rebounds from a brutal home loss to Michigan to run the table and win a National Championship over Notre Dame Monday night. Why they end up having the last laugh? (45:47) College basketball will slowly but surely creep into our sports consciousness in the weeks to come, but I'll talk about what's happening in the Association. Not much to unfurl, but we could be in the process of Jimmy Butler finally getting traded from Miami. I'll detail a huge haul by the Phoenix Suns which could precipitate a deal before the deadline on February 6th. The Dallas Mavericks suffer another key injury (Dereck Lively) to their depleted roster. And Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (aka SGA) is on the fast track to an MVP with a career high 54 points recorded last night in a win vs. Utah. I'll see what else has transpired throughout the NBA as we're past the halfway point of the season. (56:41) The NHL has been rather quiet. Other than the league's best player (Connor McDavid) being suspended for three games due to his actions in a game vs. Vancouver. And the Rangers are unbeaten in the last nine games as they try to make up ground in the Metropolitan Division. (1:00:24) As for baseball, other than a few fringe signings (Tim Anderson to the Angels. Paul Sewald to Cleveland) the baseball writers have inducted Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia and Billy Wagner to the Hall of Fame. Are they all worthy of enshrinement? (1:07:08) We're heading into the final few days of the Australian Open. Novak Djokovic is seeking his 25th Grand Slam singles title. He beat Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals (I have an interesting observation on Alcaraz) but will he get to a final and possibly beat Jannik Sinner. On the women's side, Aryna Sabalenka is looking for a three peat as she's reached the final. She'll face Madison Keys, who upset Iga Swiatek in the semis. Can she pull off another major upset? In this episode we come to you after the Mavs. 106-98 victory over Oklahoma City to discuss the happenings around the Mavs since Christmas Day 2024, namely Luka Dončić suffering a calf strain among other nagging injuries to Kyrie Irving , Dereck Lively, and Jaden Hardy. We also spend a healthy amount of time discussing how the Mavs can approach this year's trade deadline to address their needs of more perimeter defense. We namely debate whether it might be time to move on from Daniel Gafford in pursuit of a player better suited to guard teams that play five shooters.
January 15th, 2025 Kyrie returns but luck isn't on the Mavs side as they lose Dereck Lively to an Ankle injury. Josh, Dustin, and Raul react to Pro Devils Weekend, which saw 20 Duke players return to campus. They break down the Duke Blue Planet footage from the weekend, which included Dereck Lively running post drills with Khaman Maluach, Coach Scheyer mic'd up for practice, and a 30-minute long team speech from Jay Bilas. They also talk about Cameron and Cayden Boozer visiting campus and where Duke stands with them from a recruiting perspective. Later, they get into some hypothetical questions inspired by DJ Steward's appearance on The Brotherhood podcast. Steward said he probably left school too early. On DBR Bites #60, we preview Duke's upcoming game against UConn and we celebrate so many members of The Brotherhood coming back to campus! First, we preview Duke's upcoming football game against UConn this weekend. UConn is a team that struggled mightily against Maryland but turned it around against Merrimack. Donald and Jason discuss what to watch for when the two teams take the field as well as what UConn brings to the table. There are a couple of skill players to watch as well as who could be under center for the Huskies. After the break, we get into some basketball stuff, led by a cool event that will be on campus on October 5th. Jason will be down at Duke for Dribble for Victory Over Cancer, an event that raises money for pediatric cancer research. Jason has created a DBR Podcast fundraising team, so join us to try and raise some money for a great cause! We then get into the latest Duke Blue Planet episode, where tons of basketball alums returned to campus for one fun weekend. But, the episode has an inadvertent focus on Khaman Maluach in a really cool way, as you see how his interactions with Dereck Lively and his coaches shows how coachable he is and how quickly he learns. Finally, friend of the pod Shane Battier has a new podcast! It's called Glue Guys, and it's discussing the unsung heroes of life. Vincent Goodwill and Isis “Ice” Young recap game 4 of the NBA Finals, which saw the Dallas Mavericks crush the Celtics to send the series back to Boston.(01:05) - Mavericks win game 4, send NBA Finals back to Boston(14:40) - Luka Doncic responds to criticism(20:25) - NBA Finals game 5 preview(28:55) - Who will be Finals MVP?On this episode of the Good Word with Goodwill, Yahoo Sports senior NBA reporter Vincent Goodwill is joined by new Yahoo Sports contributor Isis “Ice” Young to break down how the Mavericks dominated the Celtics on Friday night.Vince and Ice kick off the show by talking about the Mavericks playing with force, on both offense and defense, and how it aligned with Dereck Lively's quote about being the aggressor against the Celtics.Luka Doncic, who has been criticized by almost everybody in the media, played with pride and put together one of his best two-way performances of the playoffs. Ice says that the criticism was warranted, but only because Luka is regarded as one of the best basketball players in the world and should play more consistent defense.Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown looked lost against the Dallas defense, as did pretty much everyone on the Celtics. What can change before game 5 in Boston? Will Kyrie Irving be as effective in Boston as he has been in Dallas? Finally, Vinnie and Ice debate on who the Finals MVP would be right now and make guesses as to who will be named Finals MVP by the end of the series. Also, both of them make spicy predictions on what will happen in game 5 on Monday.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
