Baxie welcomes back Barry Andrews from Shriekback! Barry has just released Shriekback's 18th album, “Monument!”. Barry not only talks about the album, but he also talks about starting the band in mid-80's with the late Dave Allen (former bass player with the Gang of Four) who died last month at the age of 69. Barry (the former keyboard player and original member of my favorite band-XTC) talks about the idea of aging, touring, playing solo, and about his very specific thoughts about releasing his music! Record Store Day 2025 is April 12th. For the most up-to-date news about all things RSD, including The List, visit RecordStoreDay.com) In the last installment of our month-long Record Store Day 2025 preview series, we meet the members of L.A. band, Wallows (Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston) in anticipation of their RSD First Release, the MORE EP (Atlantic Records). The trio share their backstory, how they came to work with producer John Congleton, and duet with Clairo. And 25 years after the band Harvey Danger released their sophomore LP, King James Version, Barsuk Records is releasing a deluxe two-album gatefold reissue as an RSD First Release, with new liner notes by singer and lyricist Sean Nelson, who joins us to unpack the emotional baggage behind the making of the album, and why their previous album's biggest hit ("Flagpole Sitta") became something of a mixed blessing. But first, Paul takes a moment to pay his respects to two of his musical heroes who left us this past week; bassist Dave Allen (Gang Of Four, Shriekback), and celebrated drummer Clem Burke (Blondie, Eurythmics, and more.) The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. If you want to know what it takes, this is it!
+ Nephew..... (og gud, hvor er det en typisk liste;).

A well-placed song in a film holds the power to shape a viewer's emotions, heighten tension, set the tone, foreshadow events, provide insight into characters, or deepen the narrative. In essence, music is the heartbeat of the cinema that can elevate a film from good to sublime. Take it from someone who knows, like this week's Third Lad, Barry Andrews - he's had songs soundtracking pivotal moments in films such as Manhunter and Band of the Hand. Barry Andrews began his professional music career in the punk era lending his keyboard stylings to a little band that you may have heard of, XTC, giving them one of the most defining and distinctive features of their sound for their first two albums. After leaving XTC in 1979, he released a fine solo EP and single, formed the short lived Restaurant for Dogs, and played with Iggy Pop and Robert Fripp's League of Gentlemen before forming the band Shriekback with Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen and singer Carl Marsh in 1981. For the better part of the last 43 years, Barry has kept Shriekback alive through various incarnations, continuing to release music that's daring, experimental, and artful, as well as maintaining an ambitious and rewarding solo career. Legendary artist and pioneering music producer Luc Van Acker might have made music history, he doesn't do nostalgia. With a career spanning over four decades, he has instinctively moved between solo projects; bands like Revolting Cocks, Ministry, Front 242, Arbeid Adelt! & many more and offered up cult collabs and genre-bending productions. His fearlessly fun, self-proclaimed 'insane', and experimental M.O. has navigated industry politics and backroom machinations for the longest time, yet he remains ahead of the wave, forever optimistically searching for new sounds. On this episode, Luc and Dominique retrace his journey—from self-producing his first solo record in his bedroom to in-person straight-talk with William S. Burroughs and birthing industrial music together with Richard 23, Al Jourgensen and Wax Trax! Records. He shares how experimenting with the first samplers put Belgian producers on the global map and why names like Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails and Slipknot's Joey Jordison cite him as an inspiration. Luc also tells stories of how he got through his darkest days and what led him to his current 'Twin Peaks' -ish happy place. But not before he divulges how he roped himself into his first gig with Shriekback, what 80's Chicago was like and, of course, the inception of Revolting Cocks. Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's. We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different. However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge. Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall. Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it. So, what's new? Another fun episode. Enjoy. "That's The Way Life Is" is a track by Buddy Miles, and its title and lyrics describes the humility that one has to feel when summing up the varied feelings they may have about how they are living, Just back from Amsterdam Dance Event, host Chuck Da Fonk cozies up to that sentiment and puts together a jumble of tunes both old and new including a rare classic from Shriekback, new unreleased FSQ, and a special feature on Italian by way of Netherlands disco-don (and more genres) producer Daniel Monaco. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. I'm really pleased to have as our guest this week Barry Andrews with a story about quite literally breaking down walls. Barry started off his musical journey as the keyboardist in XTC. He played on their first two records before leaving to start Shriekback with Dave Allen, former bass player for the Gang of Four. Shreikback's best known song might be “My Spine is the Bassline,” but it's their 1985 song “Nemesis” that I feel is a totally underrated track of the 80s and well worth searching out. You can find what Barry's up to on the Shreikback site here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Born of the fallout from two of post punk's best, Shriekback had no right to be any good, because well, so-called supergroups rarely are. But Shriekback were better than good – at their best they were simply majestic, riding a wave of ideas and inspiration that left other 80's pretenders flailing in their wake. In this episode we'll attempt to hook, then land the fish below the ice that is Shriekback. Ivan Julian has been one of music's most celebrated players and most in-demand collaborators for more than four decades. Indeed, Ivan Julian has spent his life soaking up a wealth of experiences, musical and otherwise. The son of a Navy officer, he grew up in such exotic locales as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, nurturing a sensitive, creative streak that quickly manifested itself musically. At the age of 13, while living in Washington, D.C., he became the singer in a Led Zeppelin cover band; the following year, he began playing guitar. Having already studied bassoon and saxophone, Julian spent his high school years studying music theory as a part-time student in a college program. At 19, his wanderlust led him to London, where he joined U.K. R&B hitmakers The Foundations, (Build Me Up Buttercup) with whom he toured throughout Great Britain and Europe. It was during one of these tours that he decided to stay on in Macedonia to absorb and study the musical scales and rhythms that would have a major influence on his playing. Then Julian returned to the U.S. and settled in New York, just in time to become part of the emerging punk rock movement. A founding member of the seminal Richard Hell and the Voidoids, he was now playing alongside trend-setting punk poet Hell, fabled guitarist Robert Quine and drummer Marc Bell (a.k.a. Marky Ramone). Julian's instrumental and songwriting contributions to the band's classic album Blank Generation established him as one of the scene's most acclaimed and influential axemen. After the Voidoids disbanded, Julian stepped out to form the Outsets as a vehicle for his own vocal and songwriting efforts. Combining rock, funk and African rhythms, the Outsets became a beloved fixture on New York's burgeoning club scene, winning considerable critical acclaim for such releases as the debut single “I'm Searchin' for You”/”Fever,” a self-titled EP produced by Garland Jeffreys and the posthumously released The Punk/Funk Voodoo Collection. Teaming up with Bush Tetras singer Cynthia Sley Julian's next band, the Lovelies, won substantial attention with the release of the Mad Orphan LP. Also, during this time he regrouped with former bandmate Richard Hell to do an extensive tour of Japan. By this point, Julian's abilities as a collaborator had become sought after by a wide array of acts. He plays on “The Call Up” and “Ivan Meets GI Joe” with The Clash (on their Sandinista album), collaborated with Afrika Bambaataa and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic. He also joined England's Shriekback for two tours of North America and Europe. Julian spent much of the 1990s touring and recording with Matthew Sweet. In recent years, Ivan has concentrated mainly on studio work, producing and/or recording artist such as Sean Lennon and producing three albums by The Fleshtones. He's also developed his recording studio, SuperGiraffeSound into one of New York's hottest new recording facilities, working with numerous local, national and international bands. His solo LP, The Naked Flame was named one of the best records of the year by several trade magazines in Europe and the states including Trouser Press. Soon after came The Fauntleroys EP, Below the Pink Pony, a collaboration with Alejandro Escovedo, Nick Tremulis and Linda Pittman. His newest album ‘Swing Your Lanterns' is available on PRAVDA Records. The songs encompass his experiences of the past five years and more; Some of which, we have all lived through. Der beviser endnu en liste af navne: Genesis, The Cure, Abba, Beatles, Split Enz, The Triffids, Kate Bush, Muse, Crash Test Dummies, Jane Siberry, Saga, The Tubes, Sparks, The Icicle Works, Shriekback, XTC og Sebastian, Gangway + Jens Unmack.

Shriekbacks' Barry Andrews has been gracious enough to let us use his song title "Sticky Jazz" for this podcast, and since he is on the circuit trying to crowdfund the new album, I wanted to give him a slot of conversation here to talk about the new album. He is putting out Shriekback's 17th studio album "BOWLAHOOLA", and we talked about the writing and the work behind this album, so far, they are just short of hitting the studio for finishing touches, and he needs some cash to finish that. We talked about the writing of it, the history into this album, and the great track that I dubbed "Barry's 9th". So, go to https://shriekback.com/store and drop a couple bucks to assist in this endeavor, it is going to be a wonder I'm sure (especially Barry's 9th, that's the one Im looking forward to). #shriekback #barryandrews #shriekpods #crowdfunding #bowlahoola #bignightmusic #nemesis

website The world needs to hear from The Mortal Prophets, with a horror film like underbelly feel of the Americanist Religions. John Beckmann is the guy who can pull everything from the Unrepentant fallen preacher, still revieving visions and able to scare you in the delivery. He did some great work with Gary Lucas the guitar god, and covered some pre war blues, and he even talked about the assasination of JFK in his lyrics. There is nothing we won't cover in his subject matter, and he reminds you of My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, with Shriekback, and some sort of mad carnival barker. #mortalprophets #garylucas #captainbeefheart #robertjohnson #jimmyhendrix #shriekback #alabama3 soundcloud website instagram youtube

This one is about the late 70's early 80's punk / goth-ish band known as The Damned. El Carpe falls over himself trying desperately to run the show himself (Eric stuck at work... grrrr...) - the primary members of The Damned have some influence and connections you may not be aware of - Chrissy Hinde (Pretenders), Lemmay (Motorhead), Hugh Jones (big time producer guy for bands in the 80's) and Hans Zimmer - yeah, the guy who got Academy Awards & stuff for music scores for super famous movies in the 80's / 90's and beyond... yeah - produced music with The Damned (very early on), involved in "Video Killed the Radio Star" (Buggles), Shriekback, and many other wacky connections - until flying straight and well - you look him up - that guy's got a crap-ton of credits to his name ! Give this a listen, check out the tunes - like - comment - follow and all that other stuff that people do if they enjoy a podcast. The Law Offices of Jamison, Walker, Statler and Waldorf have updated the medical disclaimer - and as always "Use caution when driving or operating heavy machinery. Talk to your doctor to see if listening to this show is right for you." All music played on all of our shows is purely due to our love of music- we don't own any rights to any of the awesome tunes you hear - since we comment on all the music we play - we claim Fair Use as allowed and any copywrite strike should be understood as a shot across the bow - cuz dude... we are trying to get folks to find out more about your band and buy your stuff... so chill ! Side note: the opening song used is Six and the Sevens "Go All Night" and standard closing song is also Six and the Sevens "Uranium Clock" - both great tunes - available for purchase or listening - and I've got a verbal agreement that it's ok for me to use those for our crazy dumbass show. (I know a guy) Thanks for participating in this pile of show - Join us for a better one next time - and feel free to comment all ya want - my dumbass will answer you.
The band that wrote the song, and inspired "Sticky Jazz". Barry Andrews of Shriekback, one of my favourite musicians of all time. Shriekback are a band that will sing about invisible rays, princesses being sold into slavery, and Jihad, in one song. They have been featured in movies by Michael Mann, in the "Pre Silence of the lambs" movie "Manhunter", and apparently even wall insulation in New Zeland. Barry is one of the most creative people in music, he has given us music to make you dig deep to figure out what it's about. We talk about Shriekback history, bands they have worked with, and the new music on the way. Barry explains his music, and art with all the wit and humour of the writing process, the stories, and meaning of his work, and provides an oral history of what went into the lyrics. You can find all of the music at the song links below. *The songs in this episode were as follows. Nemesis, Come Open Up Your Filthy Hear To Me, Lined Up, Putting All The Lights Out, http://www.shriekback.com/ facebook instagram youtube
Dave Allen is the founding bass guitarist for the post-punk band, Gang of Four. In 1981, he left Gang of Four to form Shriekback. He later founded World Domination Recordings and two of its bands, The Elastic Purejoy and Low Pop Suicide (with Rick Boston). He appeared on several LPs and EPs with each of these bands, The Harvest and the Elastic Purejoy's The Clutter of Pop and Talk Radio. After leaving Shriekback in 1988, Allen founded King Swamp with other former bandmates. According to Pitchfork.com, in 2006, Allen formed a super-group under the name Faux Hoax with Danny Seim of Menomena, John Askew of Tracker, and Pioneers Press author Adam Gnade. A 7" single, "Your Friends Will Carry You Home," featuring Gnade on vocals, was released by Polyvinyl records in 2008. JC got a chance to sit down with Dave to talk about the formation of Gang of Four, getting into the tech industry, living in the PNW, and what he's up to now. All of this and much more on this new episode of theFIVE10 Podcast!
Walter Wray was the lead singer of the excellent alternative rock band King Swamp who had a minor hit in 1989 with the song "Is This Love". The band had a great pedigree, as it featured members of Shriekback, as well as Dominic Miller, who has played with Sting for the last 25 years or so. Walter stepped away from the music biz in the early 90s, but has recently started a unique new project with the Shriekback guys called LiTTLe MaCHiNe. King Swamp is another in a long line of great bands that deserved more.
