SynopsisIn the early 1990s, flutist Susan Morris de Jong and guitarist Jeffrey Van commissioned Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra to write three sets of chamber works that have become classics for their combination of instruments. Sierra titled these Crónicas del Descubrimiento, or Chronicles of Discovery, and said they were his vision of the bewilderment the native Indians of Puerto Rico must have felt during first interactions with the Spanish conquistadores, and vice-versa.Each of the three sets contains two contrasting pieces in which flute and guitar seem to observe, excite and provoke each other, with the first slow atmospheric piece followed by a more rhythmic second one. On today's date in 1994 in Minneapolis, De Jong and Van presented the third and final set of Sierra's Chronicles of Discovery, containing two pieces: the first titled Song, and the second, more ominously, Battle.Sierra left his native Puerto Rico to study composition with György Ligeti in Hamburg in the late 1970s, served as the composer-in-residence of the Milwaukee Symphony in the 1980s and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2021.Music Played in Today's ProgramRoberto Sierra (b. 1953) – Battalia, from Tercera Crónica del Descubrimiento (Marcelo Barbozab, flute; Fabio Zanona, guitar) Somm CD-0669
It's been a roller coaster of emotions for me since I've last posted a podcast episode. When they say "Life happens," it's no joke- there's been a lot of life and death that has happened in my world. From moving homes and offices in Miami of 2022, to suddenly loosing my mother-in-law in February of 2023, to then moving continents from the US to Switzerland with my family in July of 2023- let's say it's been a whirlwind for me. Hence the huge hiatus from my podcast. But no more delays. I'm back and ready to embrace the incredible stories of growth, life, and loneliness that land on the Dr. Sylvia K show. I have a couple of raw and real stories saved in the pipeline for you.In today's episode- You will meet Luna Battalia, a Leadership Mentor and Brand Cohesion Strategist. I recorded this interview last year on September 14, 2022. You will hear some thunder in the background which is a great metaphor for Luna's passion about rites of passage and growth for leaders. In this episode, Luna is going to speak about her own rites of passages as well as how we can honor the Self when we are going through change, loss, or grief.I am so grateful for Luna and her work, because learning how to honor the Self, in those moments of big and small changes, has helped me SOOOO much.I hope Luna's voice and stories can help you feel just a little less alone in this world. You can find more info about Luna and her incredible work at:www.lunaloveleadership.comor on instagram: @lunabattaliaxo,Dr. Sylvia K
Everyone knows Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Even if United Airlines hadn't made the piece ubiquitous, it seems like the one piece of classical music almost everyone knows besides the beginning of Beethoven's 5th symphony is Rhapsody in Blue. But did you know that Gershwin wrote a second rhapsody for piano and orchestra? We know Shostakovich's later works for their intensity, drama, and depth, but did you know that Shostakovich was a completely different composer when he was a young man? That he wrote funny, sarcastic, and wildly experimental music? How about Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and his Battalia a 10? Or Ethel Smyth's string quintet? Or the music of Teresa Carreno? Leonard Bernstein used to talk about the infinite variety of classical music because there's simply an endless treasure trove of great and often totally unknown classical music out there. So today, I want to take you on a bit of an archeological expedition, exploring 10 pieces you've (probably) never heard of, but really have to listen to. My list includes some very recognizable names, including Ravel, Gershwin, and Shostakovich, but also some names you might know less well, like Anton Arensky, Milosz Magin, and Teresa Carreno. Join us and discover something new!

I'm honored to be joined by my guest Luna Battalia for this week's dose of Fire and Soul. The universe aligned us when my recent guest Ruby Fremon shared how Luna held space for her grief and rage one very tender day on social. When I read that, I stopped. And took a deep breath in reverence for the beauty of their friendship..As a woman who longs for and quite frankly demands that level of depth of intimacy in my own sisterhood, I had to have Luna on Fire and Soul. So off we went, deep into the portal of HOLY MATURITY. We talk about conscious divorce, devotional leadership, and the sovereign responsibility required for the sacred union we desire with ourselves and one another. “Because what you birth, births you.” – Luna .Luna is a Transformational Leadership Mentor, with a Masters's Degree in Spiritual Psychology, and the creator of The Alignment Code™ and the Self-Initiation Deck. Donald Macleod explores the music, and what little is known of the life, of Baroque master Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber. Biber’s first appearance in the historical records is in his early 20s, when we find him in the service of Karl Liechtenstein, prince-bishop of Olomouc in central Moravia. In this week’s episode, we meet Biber as he runs an errand for his boss, but mysteriously absconds en route, trading in his old employer for a new and even more illustrious one, Prince-Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph von Küenburg. In Salzburg, Biber put down roots, married the daughter of a wealthy local businessman, fathered eleven children and gradually rose through the court ranks to become Kapellmeister. His risky career-gamble had paid off. Donald introduces us to the musical legacy the elusive composer left behind, playing Biber’s best-known work (his Mystery, or Rosary, Sonatas) as well as his music for church and stage. We also learn about his close relationships with the violin and his home of Salzburg, and the five remarkable printed collections of instrumental music that spread his name across Europe. Music featured: Missa Alleluia (Kyrie) Sonata ‘La pastorella’ Battalia a 10 (Sonata di marche) Sonata violino solo representativa Partita VI in D (Harmonia Artificioso-Ariosa) The Rosary Sonatas: The Five Joyful Mysteries Passacaglia in G minor for unaccompanied violin Vesperae longiores ac breviores, 1693 Arminio, or Chi la dura la vince (extracts) Litaniae Sancto Josepho Sonata No 11 in A (Sonatae tam Aris, quam Aulis servientes) Partita No 3 in A minor (Mensa sonoris, seu Musica instrumentalis) Sonata No 3 in F (Sonatae violino solo) Sonata No 12 in A major (Fidicinium sacro-profanum) Partita No 1 in D minor (Harmonia artificioso-ariosa) Balletti a 6 (1. Lucie Skeaping presents a focus on the "stylus fantasticus" genre of programmatic music which flourished in Bohemia during the 17th Century. It was the style favoured by the Bishop of Olomouc-Kromeriz, in what's now the Czech Republic. An enormously sociable fellow - and also a Prince - he spent his summers entertaining friends and relations in the fabulous Kromeriz Castle where he laid on for them lavish feasts, plays, ballets and concerts. The root of the music was the ground-breaking toccatas by the Venetian organist & composer Claudio Merulo, and through him, other keyboard composers such as Girolamo Frescobaldi and Johann Jakob Froberger who took the style further. The stylus fantasticus or "fantasy style" developed under the Prince Bishop's patronage and was perfect for the light-hearted summer entertainments at the Kromeriz Castle parties. The most famous practitioner of the "stylus fantsaticus" was Heinrich Biber, whose colourful "Battalia" invokes a military encampment by means of trumpet and drum motifs - full of imagination and wit. We hear eight drunken musketeers singing their native songs, officers engaging in elegant fencing, horses and cavalry, a battle complete with trumpet flourishes and shots, and finally the lament of the wounded musketeers.
