On today's Friday News Roundup, producer Marie Cecile Anderson and EP Whitney Pastorek are joined by City Cast Nashville contributor and Metro Council columnist Nicole Williams, who's helping us celebrate the current Metro Council's first year in office by grading their progress. We've also got info on the sticky situation unfolding at the Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery — where the creator of their acclaimed “Journey to Jubilee” tour says her work is being altered to make white folks more comfortable — and a roundup of trusted nonprofits and mutual aid orgs you should consider donating to as recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Helene continues in the eastern part of our state. And stick around after the roundup for our Don't Go Gently tip for the weekend, presented by our exclusive launch sponsor, Tecovas. Nashville Oktoberfest takes over Germantown this weekend! It's the longest continually running party in the Southeast, slinging beers, brats, and schnitzel since 1980. General admission tickets start at $10 — beer and food is extra — and don't miss the Dachshund Derby on Sunday in Bicentennial Park. We recommend a rideshare for this event, since parking is bonkers and you'll probably be imbibing. Make good choices and have fun! And hey — don't go gently, go in Tecovas! This podcast episode discusses the early history of the Port of Miami. From the first channel dredged by Henry Flagler in 1897 to the move of the port to the Dodge Islands, the overriding theme throughout the history of this most important institution was “Watch the Port of Miami”. What began with the start of steamship service from Royal Palm Docks to transport tourists from Miami to Key West, grew into one of the largest port operations in the nation by the 1930s. When the port moved from the mouth of the Miami River to today's Maurice Ferre Park (aka Bicentennial Park), it was not well received by many of Miami's civic leaders. The fear was that the beauty of the shoreline along the bay would be overtaken by the industrial operations of the port. From the onset, city leaders had a plan to move the port from the shoreline to somewhere else. Finally, beginning in the late-1950s, the Metro Dade County government partnered with the City of Miami to bulkhead and connect the chain of Dodge Islands to create one of the busiest ports in the world. Mike opens the show by sharing the amazing trip they had to Tennessee. After the Rumble in the Boro, they went to Nashville and explore the place. Torya points out that every Sunday, everything was closed. Then they share the places they went to,First, they saw the Bicentennial Park, a replica of the Parthenon. It was a massive park, with a lake and funky trees. The cool part is that they had a platform with statues on it and benches that had words engraved on them. Mike concludes that this was such a peaceful place. Then they drove around the place and stopped at State Capitol. It's uphill, but the place had an amazing view.As a big hockey fan, Michell wants to visit the Nashville Predator team store. So they did. When they arrived at the place, the rain was torrential. He had a bright yellow hoodie from the store. The original plan was to have Nashville hot chicken in the 400 degrees, but knowing that it is Sunday and it's closed, they decided to go to Hattie B's. And Mike was amazed at the street they crossed going to the restaurant. Then they talked about their dining experience at the restaurant. Then they share about how nice and friendly the people in Nashville are. They are greeting you nicely and look at your eye to eye. Then they talked about the place where the Civil war happened. And they went to a barbeque place for dinner. They totally agree that this place was awesome! Then they talked about the rest of the places they went to.Mike and Torya end the show by saying how amazing the trip they had to Nashville and that they will never fly with American Airlines ever again.

If there is one thing I know about Lori Brauer, it's her enormous heart. You can feel it the moment you meet. For the past 15 years Lori has been engaged in work with non-profits, raising funds and attention for less than fortunate people and worthy causes. The other thing about Lori is that she is self-effacing. Her sense of humility comes out during our conversation as you'll hear, always giving credit to others and drawing it away from her. We also talk about Lori's entrepreneurial ethic of figuring things out even when she doesn't know a thing and is not afraid to dive in to make things happen for others. One of the tools in her quiver is story-telling, and we talk about how this essential entrepreneurial skill comes to play. Currently committed to a non-profit startup, the OMPT Foundation, whose goal is to provide the basis for even the most disadvantaged kids "to have a success story." OMPT Foundation is currently working with schools in the Ferndale, MI school system with basics: food, hats, gloves, socks, underwear. Lori's bent as an entrepreneur has helped the Foundation grow from just one to four schools in less than a year. We spend the beginning of the episode talking about this current work helping these kids and her history in non-profits, which include stints with the Michigan Council of Women in Technology and The Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan. Lori expresses her passion that even the smallest contribution helps. Lori's entre into the non-profit world was a natural extension of her running. A tragic family event while training for the Detroit Free Press Marathon led her to raising money for Multiple Sclerosis Society and running the marathon with the name of her sister-in-law written on the insoles of her shoes while calling on her spirit to help Lori through the long 26.2 miles. Ten years later, in prepping for a celebration for her 50th birthday, Lori decided she wanted to skydive. There was another family loss, this time her Dad was stricken with cancer. In true fashion, Lori decided again that "it can't just be without me." While mourning the loss of "my biggest fan", Lori raised money for both the American Cancer Society and the MS Foundation. And she did the jump: https://youtu.be/wxxwyJWaOkc. if you watch the video, you might even see Lori's husband Rick, whom I'm told wasn't as excited as Lori about jumping out of an airplane. Lori's passion for running comes back around when we turn to her work designing and making jewelry. As far as artists go, Lori is very kinesthetic. That's why, she says she was attracted to designing and making jewelry. I met Lori on the marathon expo circuit when she was selling running and other sport-themed jewelry she made at her workshop at home. We then turn to her sense of what motivates creatives and how to overcome blocks and her sense of what creatives do. Running comes up as a theme again when she met her husband Rick through a local running store and their mutual passion for running. In fact, Rick and Lori started the US arm of Parkrun, which started in the UK as a free, weekly timed 5k run. Since the very first Parkrun in Livonia's Bicentennial Park in 2012, it has grown to 41 different Parkruns in the US.
So if you remember since last year there have been questions about whether Ultra Miami festival will continue in its previous location, which if I may remind you was Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. Since its inception Ultra Miami Festival was held for the first 2 years (1999-2000) in Miami Beach, in 2001 it moved to Bayfront Park, six years later in 2007 it moved to Bicentennial Park for the five years, and finally returned to Bayfront Park in 2012 where it remained until 2018 when Ultra Music Festival celebrated its 20th anniversary with the Swedish House Mafia reunion closing a sell-out weekend.. For the past few years the festival administration was having problem with the local Commissioner and the City Council in renewing the license Ultra held because of the commotion from the crowds roaming downtown Miami before and after the festival and the associated noise pollution. This was not actually the first attempt as there was a similar previous attempt back in 2014. A counter petition at change.org to keep Ultra at Bayfront Park in 2014 gathered 49000 signatures in its favour. As we can see this is not a recent face-off but an ongoing problem. And all this despite the alleged beneficial impact of Ultra to the local economy. In 2013, the festival resulted in an infusion of $223 million into the local economy. If you recall there was a petition since last year to throw the Ultra Music Festival out of Bayfront Park; this petition was run by the local community. Ultra’s contract with Bayfront Park was about to expire, and nearby residents have been collecting signatures to ensure it does not get renewed. The petition, which counted more than 1000 signatures, targeted both Ultra and hip-hop festival Rolling Loud, and was delivered at the city’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting. The Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) assembled the petition, an organization that has already made headlines with recent noise complaints and face-offs against other residents and three 24-hour clubs that call downtown Miami home: Space Club, Heart Nightclub and E11even. The campaign was aimed at giving the park back to the local community rather than have it designated as a “cash cow for the city" that is “destroying the park’s environmental elements” and bringing “alcohol/drug-related violence” to the downtown area. The petition read: “We, the residents of Downtown Miami and its neighboring communities deserve to have daily access to Bayfront Park – our neighborhood park,” the petition states. “Instead, since the beginning of 2017, Bayfront Park has been closed to the public or in a state of disrepair for over 100 days because of mega-concerts like Ultra and Rolling Loud.” According to The Miami New Times, Commissioner Joe Carollo led the charge in denying the renewal of Ultra's bid, citing the fact that downtown residents are sick and tired of the chaotic and loud festival. What a party poop ! When pro-Ultra speakers argued about the historical value of the location, Carollo responded with true insight: "That was a different Miami. The kind of music that Ultra plays is not the same as other venues where the music changes... It's thump, thump, thump." I for once agree. Martin Garrix and Hardwell should stop these risers for fucks sake. When I read all these news about the petitions last year I thought it was just a funny old joke...but guess what happened this year ! The petition was upheld and Ultra Festival lost its license of holding the 2019 event in Bayfront Park. Following its eviction, it remained unclear as to where Ultra Music Festival planned to locate next. Even though tickets for the 2019 edition of the festival went on sale the day before the decision was reached. Until today we really didn't know what was going to happen and whether Ultra Music Festival will actually happen in 2019 or whether it would be kicked out of Miami and therefore they had to relocate. I just received an email announcing the new location which --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/freakbeats-edm-podcast/message

As fate would have it, a large group of like-minded community driven people found their way to the sleeping City of Joliet. There has been an awakening taking place here. You can find some great spots to eat and drink while listening to local musicians. There's even a few spots to see some well known acts, too. There have been top notch festivals suitable for the whole family that are just insane amounts of fun. The people putting all of these things together do it because they love it, and it shows. It all keeps getting better as more new businesses keep popping up. This podcast is here to let you know What's Goin' Down In Downtown J-Town. We got back into the studio after a seven week break to interview John Simpson. This guy comes out to almost as many shows and events around here as I do. This guy was behind the New Orleans North festival that's held each year. He does a ton of event planning with Bicentennial Park along with The Joliet Chamber of Commerce. He's been a great help and a tireless supporter. Born and residing in Miami, Florida, Damian began DJing shortly after being introduced to electronic music back in 2002 when he attended his first Ultra Music Festival held in Downtown Miami in Bicentennial Park. Now a member of the H3LIUM DJ crew, representing all areas of the US, Damian found his way to the house music community by way of the strong urging of friends and family to take up the trade, always having had a deep passion for the music. Since then, he’s rocked the decks across the nation and the globe, opening for legends such as Stonebridge, George Morel, Pedro Henriquez, Eric Prydz, Markus Schulz, The Shapeshifters, Ivano Bellini, Lizzie Curious, Chrissi D!, Scotty Boy, Riley Warren, and Austin Leeds, Damian is a regularly scheduled performer at many Winter Music Conference and Miami Music Week events, and has appeared in the Groove Cruise lineup for two consecutive years (2011-2012). His musical influences include Eric Prydz, Stonebridge, Funkagenda, UMEK, Stefano Noferini, Da Fresh, and Daft Punk among many others. While artists, genres and tastes in the global electronica scene have ebbed and flowed, for Damian one genre has always shined through... House.
