He also said that he warned a Nashville judge that Rivers was too dangerous to be let out of jail. “I sat in the courtroom in Nashville and told the judge that if they let him out, he was going to kill her,” Lance Johansen said. “He had assaulted her — this was probably the fifth or sixth time where they would get into a fight and he would beat her. Mary Ann Taylor-Hall was born Oct. 17, 1937, in Chicago, but spent much of her childhood in Florida. She attended the University of Florida and earned a masters in English at Columbia University. She taught at Auburn University, Miami of Ohio and the University of Puerto Rico before coming to the University of Kentucky in 1977. She met and married her creative writing colleague, James Baker Hall, in 1982. Taylor-Hall's most famous novel is Come and Go, Molly Snow, is about a single mother and musician, and considered a Kentucky classic. She has also published a book of short stories and three volumes of poetry. Her poetry and short fiction have been published in the Paris Review, the Sewanee Review and the Kenyon Review. Her stories and poetry are inseparable from the rural landscape of Harrison County where she has found inspiration for nearly 5 decades.  On March 25 she will be one of the three living inductees honored and welcomed into the Carnegie Center's Kentucky Writers' Hall of Fame 2024."It seems to me that almost everybody in Kentucky has a background that is worth fiction: how they got here, why they stayed, what happened on the way," she said.  "I think that's one reason Kentucky is so rich in writers.  It's both the people who live here, and it's the landscape.  You drive down the roads, and you see history.  People want to write about their own history or their parents' history, or they know a story they've been told.  It's a storytelling place."

On this week's program, we're talking Regional Climate Action Planning with Sumedha Rao and Gianna Bennett from the Metro Louisville Mayor's Office of Sustainability (http://louisvilleky.gov/sustainability). The Office of Sustainability is currently conducting a Regional Climate Action Plan Survey to collect information on residents' climate and sustainability priorities. This work is funded by an EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant, and residents within our Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) can participate in the survey. That includes the following 11 counties: In Kentucky: Louisville/Jefferson County, Bullitt County, Oldham County, Shelby County, Spencer County, Henry County, and Trimble County; In Indiana: Clark County, Floyd County, Harrison County, and Washington County. Responses before January 31 are eligible to enter a raffle and win some sustainable swag! Take the survey now at https://louisville.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dmYa3jp8EKAZU3A This work is funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Pollution Reduction Grant and will be used by the Office to update and improve Louisville's climate action plans. Louisville Metro Government has received a grant from the EPA to create an updated Climate Action Plan for the region. This work builds on past and ongoing community-engaged efforts, including the Louisville Metro Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Plan and similar plans from other regions. It is also in support of the priorities outlined in A Path Forward for Louisville (https://apathforward4lou.org/). This Climate Action Plan aims to reduce emissions and position this region for larger EPA grants. The goals are to: 1. Implement actions to reduce major greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and beyond; 2. Pursue actions to achieve community benefits in low-income areas and areas that experience most environmental harms; 3. Pursue effective policies and programs that can be “scaled up” across other areas and initiatives. This 5-10 minute survey will tell us what work we should prioritize. As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Sustainability Now! is hosted by Dr. Justin Mog and airs on Forward Radio, 106.5fm, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Monday at 6pm and repeats Tuesdays at 12am and 10am. Her travels have taken her from the hills of Georgia to the peaks of New England and from Death Valley to Mount Whitney, the top of the contiguous United States. After returning home to her family's small farm in Harrison County, Grenier records her memories in two-dimensional wool feltings to share with others the wild places she loves. Grenier has enjoyed the opportunity to exhibit her art and passion for public lands at regional art shows, where her award-winning work has been praised for its originality and authenticity. Collectors appreciate the expressive realism of Grenier's art and note that it has a soft, familiar feeling, like a treasured memory. Having earned her BA in Environmental Studies from Transylvania University and conducted ecological research in both Lexington, Kentucky, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Grenier considers her role as an artist to go beyond the visual interpretation of wild lands. In galleries and festivals, Grenier enjoys sharing stories of the landscapes depicted in her work and aspires to kindle a conservation ethos in viewers. Her focus has turned to large-scale pieces that allow viewers to imagine themselves in the backcountry and evoke the grandeur of expansive natural landscapes. A juried artist in the Kentucky Crafted Program, Grenier was recently awarded a 2022 Emerging Artist Grant by the Kentucky Arts Council. Grenier's first large-scale solo exhibition, 7500+ Miles, debuted at Boyd's Station Gallery in Cynthiana earlier this year.https://wanderstruckstudio.com/

Sibray says that the events that celebrate the return of spring in Appalachia—and the appearance of the leafy wild vegetable, a kind of wild leek—are growing in number and capacity. So far, it's going well, according to Jocelyn Sheppard, founder and president. “We have about 50 acres under cultivation. We have a 15-year agricultural lease with the landowner, and we have the cooperation of the coal operator that holds the mining reclamation permit with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection,” Sheppard said.  In a region where coal mining was once a major employer, it's a way of giving back to the community. “Besides giving the land a second chance, we're committed to providing second chance jobs to local residents: over 90% of our hires are from Boone County. We pay above minimum wages to workers who often struggle to secure employment due to a variety of reasons,” she said. “For many of our workers, these jobs mean a chance to learn new skills, have steady employment, and take good care of themselves and their families.” Learn more at appalachianbotanical.com. Welcome to Cynthiana, Kentucky!  The town was founded 1793 on land owned by Robert Harrison along the banks of the South Licking River.  The town's name is a combination of the name's of Harrison's two daughters, Cynthia and Anna. In 1854 the Covington and Lexington Railroad reached town proving greater access to Covington and Cincinnati and promised growth and greater opportunity.  Unfortunately most of the downtown was burned 10 years later during the Civil War when a Confederate General set fire to a stable in an attempt to dislodge Union troops.  The town rebounded and found success in the early 1900's  in whiskey and tobacco.  There where more than 30 distilleries producing bourbon whiskey in Harrison County at the time.   In 1969 , 3m built a research and production facility in town.  Two employees, Arthur Fry and Spencer Silver, developed Post-It Notes at the facility in 1972.  The facility still produces the majority of the Post-It Notes worldwide.  Robert Kirkman, co-creator of "The Walking Dead" comic book, is from Cynthiana.  In the comic book series, Cynthiana is the hometown of Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes.  We hope you enjoy our trip to Cynthiana!
