In unserer 27.
Cole Brauer made history in 2024 as the first American woman to race solo, non-stop around the world. She crossed the line wearing a hat that read Wild Feminist — a bold and powerful statement from a sailor who'd once been told she was too short for the Southern Ocean. Clearly, she proved them wrong — and along the way, captured the hearts and minds of over 450,000 fans by sharing raw, vulnerable glimpses into her life alone at sea. We caught up in Cowes at the end of July, just before the start of the Fastnet. It's not often I get to sit down with another woman my age competing at this level — so I loved this chat with Cole. And, I have a feeling you're going to enjoy it too. -- Support the podcast & become a member of The Quarterdeck, where Andy, August & Mia dive deep on the art of seam'nship. Tesla (TSLA) will face several headwinds in the coming months, says Karl Brauer. He says the company needs to pivot on focus for future products. That includes autonomous driving through robotaxi, though Karl says FSD innovation is still "years away" from profitability. He adds that Tesla's core business in EV sales will continue to decline and sees the $1 trillion proposed pay package for CEO Elon Musk as "optimistic." This week, we're joined by Elizabeth Brauer, Head of HR at 1IO, for a heartfelt and honest conversation about stepping away from the traditional career path and redefining what success really means.Episode Highlights:Early Career Crossroads:Elizabeth shares how, at just 18, an unexpected life event led her away from the “expected” pathway (college → university → job) and into an unconventional—and ultimately fulfilling—career.Ambition and Pressure:Elizabeth reflects on the pressures (real and imagined!) she felt as a young mum, her innate ambition, and how that drive evolved from trying to prove herself to a more personal, meaningful ambition.Success Isn't Linear:We discuss the myth of the “career ladder” and why progression often looks more like a “net”—expanding in unexpected directions and enriched by life experiences outside of work.Life Lessons in Growth:Elizabeth opens up about early failures, “timing errors,” and bravely admitting when she didn't know something. She shares the power of vulnerability and how it's shaped her as a leader.Work, Rest, and Burnout:Burnout and the “workaholic badge of honour”—why it's not sustainable, and why true success often means working less and living more.Personalized Success:Advice for anyone stuck in a high-achieving rut: take a pause, check in with yourself, and make sure your goals serve you—not some imaginary audience.Career Myths to Ditch:Elizabeth's one piece of advice to ban forever: Stop glorifying “always being on.” Quality over quantity—embrace downtime![00:01:41] – Elizabeth describes becoming a young mum and how it forced her off the traditional path.[00:03:30]– Elizabeth shares how she sought careers that fit her life, returning to college, and studying psychology.[00:06:33] – Elizabeth reflects on proving herself and how her definition of success evolved.[00:08:06] – Ruth and Elizabeth explore healthy vs. unhealthy ambition.[00:10:40]– Elizabeth discusses what's wrong in how we approach career progression, especially for women.[00:12:04] – Net/ladder metaphor and the value of lateral experience.[00:12:20] – Discussion on how broad experience can act as support/catch you.[00:15:32] – Ruth and Elizabeth discuss the dangers of hyper-focus on work.[00:16:03] – On supporting different work styles (quiet contributors, etc).[00:16:46] – Learning from mistakes and the value of reflection.[00:17:57] – Ruth asks about career risks that paid off or didn't.[00:20:30] – Admitting you need help and learning to take slower steps.[00:21:51] – Elizabeth describes the vulnerability of asking for help and the support she received.[00:22:01] – Vulnerability as a strength in leadership.[00:23:30]– Importance of people connection over just policy/process.[00:24:46] – Startup burnout, reassessing success, and discovering the cost of “doing it all.”[00:29:45] – Importance of checking in with yourself.[00:31:02] – Elizabeth: Ban always being “on,” glorifying workaholism.[00:31:39] – Value of rest and switching off.Like what you hear? In unserer 25.
Send us a textThis month, podcast host and Double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson talks to the first American woman to have sailed non-stop, alone, around the planet, as the remarkable Cole Brauer takes time out from an Admiral's Cup campaign to sit down and talk about her remarkable career to date.It was in March 2024, aged just 29, that American sailor Cole Brauer crossed the finish line of the Global Solo Challenge in her Class40 First Light. After 130 days at sea, she'd set a new Class40 record, and scored a second place in the first edition of the race. Remarkably, she also became the first ever woman from the United States to sail non-stop solo around the planet. Her story is a tale of grit, determination and perseverance, and it's a story she tells well.In a candid interview with Robertson, Brauer discusses the drive and motivations behind her success, which are varied and complex, but also admits to drawing on inspiration from famed British solo legend, Dame Ellen MacArthur...:"This woman is my size, she is...against all these very very skilled experienced men and in the the early 2000s, especially to do it at such a young age and...she killed it, she completely rocked it and I remember just crying and thinking 'That's it, I've got to do that, whatever it takes, that's my way in to this offshore world'. And of course that's pretty far fetched for anyone from the United States, man or woman, because there isn't that many people that are American that have even thought about the Vendee...or even know what it is. But I knew at that moment after reading her book that that was what I really wanted to do."Brauer's interview reveals a comparatively late discovery of the sport, early days spent living in a van, working through a long list of boatyard jobs, before significant success in the Bermuda One-Two led to bigger opportunities. Brauer backed herself, seized the opportunities and soon found herself on the start line of the solo non stop Global Solo Challenge. It's an inspiring tale, that over the race, Brauer would share with a growing number of fans. Throughout the 130 days, her following grew by the thousands, so much so that she currently boasts more Instagram followers than almost any other sailing based account on the photo sharing platform...:"After the first month we went from ten thousand followers and I finished the first month with one hundred thousand followers, and then it just accelerated from there, where we were just getting seven thousand followers a day, and these people were real, they were real like your Mom and Pop just watching this, who had no idea, anything about sailing."By Part 2 of this two-part episode, the social media aspect to Cole's story leads to an interesting discussion as she reveals to Robertson the good and the bad sides of daily posts to hundreds of thousands of followers. The duo also then discuss Brauer's feeling of responsibility as a role model, a position she takes very seriously, and her feelings on the lack of opportunity for women in the sport. This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website - www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast. The duo also then discuss Brauer's feeling of responsibility as a role model, a position she takes very seriously, and her feelings on the lack of opportunity for women in the sport...:"I'm living in a van in the parking lot. And the guy next to me is making ridiculously more money than me. Why...? It's because he asked for more. Because he walked into the room and he realised with what he was worth."It's a topic Brauer is passionate about, but she also discusses this in an eloquent and powerful manner.Shortly after the interview, Brauer went on to win the Admiral's Cup as part of Monaco Yacht Club's two boat Jolt team. She is currently co-skipper onboard IMOCA Malizia, competing on the Ocean Race Europe. This edition of the podcast is in two parts and is available to listen to via the podcast page of Shirley's own website - www.shirleyrobertson.com/podcast or via most popular podcast outlets, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcast and aCast. Karl Brauer joins Diane King Hall to discuss Rivian (RIVN) ahead of earnings. He dives into the reasons why EV sales are struggling in the U.S. and what it means for companies like Rivian, Tesla (TSLA), Lucid (LCID) and traditional automakers. Karl touches on the loss of the EV tax credit and how it weighs on pricing for EV companies. He says multi-car households, climate regions and functionality continue to lead EV buying trends but says there's still hesitancy among most buyers.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Tariffs and E.V. adoption are two major headwinds facing the auto industry. Karl Brauer discusses the impact of tariff uncertainty on car sales and inventory. Despite initial demand surges, Brauer expects a pullback in May, citing "pull forward" sales and inventory normalization. E.V. adoption also lags behind expectations due to range anxiety, limited charging infrastructure, and higher upfront costs. General Motors (GM), Tesla (TSLA) and other E.V. pure-plays may feel the sting of waning consumer interest.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Tesla (TSLA) earnings came in below expectations, and Karl Brauer said the report shows that the company needs to prove it is a technology company, not just a car company. Tesla continues to say full-self driving is close, but Brauer said it is playing catchup with other companies like Waymo and that investors may tire of promises of developments that may not come. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.
