From their early days performing free shows in Philly's Rittenhouse Square, the seven-piece band Snacktime has come a long way, and on May 25, they'll take the stage at Boston Calling to bring a truly amazing sound to the city. Sam talks about the band's new single “Sunshine” and the story behind it, as well as how they grew into their current musical style. We talk origin stories, what folks can expect in the future, and the impact the band has made over the last five years. The Ground Coffee, Plants, & Gifts opened their first location, nestled in Olde Kensington, and it swiftly became a local favorite, with now a second location in Rittenhouse Square and they open its doors in spring 2024. Philadelphia's coffee and bubble tea scene is about to get a lush addition with a new gorgeous plant-filled cafe in the heart of Center City. Long-time friends and business partners Michelle Miller and Molly Kiriacoulacos new Center City local based coffee shop, bubble tea cafe, plant store and gift shop is double the size of their first location, with room for an even larger selection of curated food, drink and plant offerings. The 1,500 square feet space was transformed from top to bottom into an urban oasis with features that include a refinished coffee and espresso bar, eclectic and comfy cafe seating, unique new interactive bubble booth, Parisian vibes and a hand-painted wall mural of Rittenhouse Square. For the beverage program, patrons will find exclusive locally roasted beans, a brand new house roast "The Botanist," an expanded bubble tea program and whimsical seasonal specialty offerings. For plants, look for everything from petite succulents to trailing vines to statement-making fiddle leaf figs and monsteras - in every size and variety. The Ground soft opened on Earth Day as a nod to its dedication to sustainability. Another recent opening we discuss is at 02:25:35 of the episode is with Richie Romero the Partner- Chief Hospitality Officer at Simplevenue and talked about Sushi by Boū is presented by simplevenue, a NYC-based hospitality group specializing in micro restaurants, and in bringing incredible concepts to underutilized spaces across the country. The company is led by Founders Michael Sinensky and Erika London, alongside newly appointed Partner and Chief Hospitality Officer Richie Romero. Its flagship brand Sushi by Boū changed the sushi counter experience in America, it offers a modern take on the classic old-school sushi counter, providing a glimpse at the hustle and bustle of Japan's food culture, combined with a truly unique, personalized culinary experience. To date, there are currently 16 locations for Sushi by Boū in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Florida, Puerto Rico and now Philadelphia too! Fishtown guests will enjoy ambiance inspired by the Hip Hop Era of the 90s, with graffiti covered walls, dozens of suspended vinyls overhead, playlights dedicated to the best of 90s Hip Hop and murals of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Hip Hop legends. Last, but certainly not last at 02:49:30 of the episode, Sam Eckstein Co-Founder of Springbone Kitchen just launched a new burger concept in NYC called Springy Burgers & Fries. It's a radically healthy take on the classic American burger joint. They've got grass-fed beef tallow in their deep fryer (just like McDonald's used to do it back in the day!) and of course their beef is 100% grass-fed; even their burger buns are gluten free. The concept is an offshoot of their first restaurant venture, Springbone Kitchen, which was an early leader in the bone broth movement. They now have 8 Springbone locations around the NYC area which are doing amazing. They used to serve a burger at their original location which was insanely popular, but they realized that to do anything well in this business you need to be a specialist. So they axed the burger and hoped to come back and do it right one day. Well that day is now! Now they have the best restaurant in the country. Next up, not only is Jamila Robinson the first Black female judge on the World's 50 Best Restaurants panel, but she's also the chair of the James Beard Foundation's Journalism Awards program. She also knows a thing or two about Philly's culinary scene and how it can change communities.
Andy Warhol considered him "the only person in town with glamour." The Philadelphia Art Alliance deemed him "the first gentleman of Philadelphia." Connoisseur Magazine named him one of the top ten art collectors of all time. When Henry Plumer McIlhenny died in 1986, he left everything - an estimated $100M worth - to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where he had served for 50 years as curator, trustee and chairman of the board. His collections were housed in both his magnificent Rittenhouse Square townhouse and at Glenveagh in Ireland, the largest privately-owned plot of land in the country. His parties were legendary. His friends were society's giants. At his death, someone commented "I had always thought that no one was irreplaceable, but Henry is irreplaceable." Fellow volunteer tour guide and historian Thomas Keels tells you of this remarkable man in the mid-August edition of “Biographical Bytes from Bala: Laurel Hill West Stories.” Wherever you get your podcasts.

My guest today is Clara Wineberg, Executive Director of the Boston office of SCB, a national architecture and design firm. She's been part of hundreds of projects but we've decided to talk about the origins of one in particular -- The Laurel, the tallest residential building in Philadelphia, at 48 stories, located on Rittenhouse Square, a very prominent location in that city. We talk about the way the shape of a building site affects the creative inspiration for a design; about architects' desire to manifest themselves through the built environment; and about the opportunity for diversity to flourish as the demand for architects services increases. The Brainwave Podcast is produced and presented by WindWord Group Publishing and Media. The Franklin Mortgage and Investment Company, a popular “speakeasy” on 18th Street in Rittenhouse Square was a popular and James Beard acclaimed bar in Philly... until it was forced to close during the pandemic. Now, after two years of renovations, it has finally reopened in a new semi-secret location, with a new owner, but with the same creativity behind the drinks. KYW Newsradio's Hadas Kuznits chats with Franklin Bar operations manager Jason Elliott about what's new, what's old and how to find them.
What's the impact of the words we use? Augmented writing platform Textio uses machine learning and natural language processing to take the guesswork out of business communication, offering predictive analytics designed to help companies recruit a diverse workforce and build an inclusive culture. The 120-person Seattle-based tech company, led by CEO Kieran Snyder, has been going through a transformation of its own during the past two years, expanding its product lineup while taking its own workforce fully remote, and recruiting more people outside the Seattle area. In the process, the company built its own in-house online tool for participatory time-boxed conversations, for team-building and collaboration among its employees. Dubbed "Umeo," it's not a product ... at least not yet. Snyder, who was named the CEO of the Year in the 2021 GeekWire Awards, joins us on this episode of the GeekWire Podcast for a conversation about the importance of language, Textio's evolution, the future of workplace technology, regional differences in business language, and her formative experience as a "Scrabble hustler" in college in Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square. Pierre Robert hosts an April 7, 2022 playback of Bruce Springsteen's guest DJ appearance. Guests include Kevin Gunn, MMR's Creative Director who found the long lost tape and David Dye who hosted Bruce in the Rittenhouse Square studio that Sunday afternoon in 1974. > From deep in the MMaRchives, comes a long-lost recording of Bruce Springsteen, live on the air at WMMR studios at 19th & Walnut on Rittenhouse Square… playing songs of his choosing and filling in the MMR audience of his next moves. Bruce was in between the release of his 2nd and 3rd albums, doing a college tour with a setlist that included songs from his debut Greetings From Asbury Park as well as the follow up, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle. It would be a year before the world exploded and Born to Run propelled Bruce and the band to unimagined stardom. David Dye, WXPN's former World Café host, and in the small ‘MMR studio that day remembers, “ I am pretty sure this was a weekend shift, probably Saturday afternoon. The only way I ever set up having Bruce on the air was to ask him at a gig.” Bruce spent an hour + there playing a wide variety of songs. Dye recalls, “Believe it or not Bruce could be shy, as you may hear. That's why I suggested the guest DJ idea- figuring that would be easier. It was. Particularly got better when he discovered the oldies compilations and that led to him playing “Stay” by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.” The 10 inch reel to reel recording was found by current MMR creative services director, Kevin Gunn, an avowed Bruce-head. He gently badgered our engineering department to repair an old reel to reel tape machine back to serviceable order to dub the recording from analog tape to digital form and ready it for playback.

This week on Revenge of the 80s Radio, Producer, Musician, Innovator (and sometimes actor) Don Dixon talks with Chris about a new live album featuring him, Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter and several people out of the Winston-Salem music scene of the late 70s and 80s titled: Yesterday's Tomorrow: Celebrating the Winston-Salem Sound. It's a live recording of a special 2018 concert featuring members of what has been dubbed "The Combo Corner."The album is due out on May 7th; the performance featured original members of bands including Arrogance, Little Diesel, Sacred Irony, and Rittenhouse Square —including Mitch Easter (Let's Active); Peter Holsapple, Will Rigby, and Chris Stamey (the dB's); singers Don Dixon, Dale Smith, Lynn Blakey, Bob Northcott; and many others — as they played together on May 12, 2018, at Winston-Salem's Ramkat club. With the added excellence of the Occasional Orchestra (live strings, percussion, and brass), music direction by Doug Davis (Vagabond Saints' Society), and stops along the way for affectionate renditions of then-favorites by Bubble Puppy, the Easybeats, the Music Machine, the Electric Prunes, the Beatles, and even Kool and the Gang, there is a lot for music lovers to appreciate in Yesterday's Tomorrow. We also play music from Adrian Belew, Marshall Crenshaw and more.
It's another jam-packed episode of #BTLRadioShow as we go from the Atlantic to the Pacific thanks to our special guests, ALEX NOYER and actor JASMIN SAVOY BROWN, fresh off their world premiere at SXSW talking about their frightening and intriguing new film SOUND OF VIOLENCE, and director/co-writer PAOLO PILLADI who makes his narrative feature directorial debut with the delightfully engaging and fun LAST CALL. First up we head to Philly with PAOLO PILLADI and LAST CALL, a fun film that focuses on lifelong friends and family, "the old neighborhood", gentrification, redevelopment, and the nostalgic warmth of neighborhoods and the mom and pop shops of our youth. Shooting in Bayonne, NJ as a perfect stand-in for the suburban Philly neighborhood of Upper Darby ("Darby Heights" in the film), this is the story of Mick, a guy who wanted more than what he thought the neighborhood could give him and moved all the way to Rittenhouse Square and Center City (about 10 miles) to become a mover and shaker in real estate development complete with fancy car and cash. But behind the allure of cash and cars and the high life, is the ugly reality that Mick may be helping his own father's bar and his friends' homes be destroyed as the result of a big real estate deal. Listen as Paolo and I go in-depth into the making of LAST CALL; from co-writing with his fellow Philadelphian Greg Lingo, to casting, to location scouting, to the importance of showcasing the home and hearth of neighborhoods, to cinematography, editing, and score, we cover it all. LAST CALL is in theatres, On Demand, and digital now. Then we are joined by writer/director ALEX NOYER and actor JASMIN SAVOY BROWN to discuss their new narrative film SOUND OF VIOLENCE. This is an absolute "Must See"!! A fascinating and horrifying film that tells the story of Alexis, a young girl who lost her hearing as the result of an accident only to have it suddenly restored by another traumatic incident, one that involved her witnessing the brutal death of her mother at the hands of her father, but also Alexis' own violent actions. Now an adult and in college with a focus on an auditory world and music, Alex is energetic, focused, alive; not what one might expect from a once traumatized child. But has she put the trauma of the past behind her? Opening us up to the world of synesthesia which is where stimulation of one sensory pathway activates another, in this case the sound of violence and death becoming joyously orgasmic for Alexis, listen as first-time feature director Alex talks about crafting the script and diving into synesthesia and making it visually palpable by using color and music to translate sound into emotion. SOUND OF VIOLENCE is releasing through Gravitas Ventures on May 21, 2021! http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This has been the case for Erin Branche, who was able to sit down, research, and develop online courses which had taken a backseat to her numerous other projects over the years. She has also coined a new motto, 'there's no someday on the calendar' and the time she spent at home has allowed her to not only revisit shelved ideas, it has also allowed her to spend more time with her family. In this episode, Andrea Heuston is joined by Erin Branche, Founder and CEO of Lash Bash to talk about her passion for beauty and luxury, and the impact and power of determination. Erin shares how she started her entrepreneurial journey which led her to Lash Bash, the challenges she faced growing her business, and why it is very important for her to create quality connections with her clients. Set adjacent to Rittenhouse Square, many buyers find The Art Museum area a quiet oasis perfect to find a new home. There is a Whole Foods and a Mini-Target in the center of the neighborhood. The Art Museum Area offers easy access to major highways. Of course, the Art Museum, The Oval, The Rodin Museum, loads of shopping, and Fairmount Park are major attractions in the neighborhood, making the area quite a draw. Located on the northwest corner of 22nd and Chestnut Streets sits the "pre-war" styled condos of the Coronado building. Just west of the Rittenhouse Square area and with a total of 37 condos in the building, this almost boutique condo building has some very interesting units. Most either have a northern or southern exposure and there is a maximum of 4 units per floors. I think what most of my buyers appreciate is the sense of space that each condo provides. From formal dining rooms to original flooring- The Coronado Condos really give you a feel like each condo is a little ranch house in the sky....they are really home-like in their detailing and layout. Lathe and plaster walls, crown moldings, and five panel solid doors all complete the interior look of each condo. Many units here do NOT have living room/dining room combinations. Most kitchens are galley in style- the saving grace being that most have a door out to a balcony or fire escape which my buyers find refreshing. I think The Coronado is without a doubt one of the BEST values to be found in 19103 for high rise condo living. You are not going to find this kind of space at the prices the building commands. And kudos to the condo association for the ongoing facade work. Most associations ignore this need...but the owners at 2201 Chestnut are putting money into the building to maintain their investments and I think that is a damned good thing! Learn more about The Coronado here: http://centercitycondos.com/mid_rises/coronado.html

Sitting on the south side of Rittenhouse Square at 1806 S. Rittenhouse is the Savoy condos. Known for their fabulous views of our prized city park, these condos in Philadelphia are a truly affordable alternative to some of the pricier Center City real estate options offered in the 19103 area. Studios, one and two-bed units abound, and the Savoy's rooftop deck is a real treat for owners. The condos on Rittenhouse Square located at 1806 have a pretty good reputation of selling as the building does offer good space, coupled with a doorman building, on the square, with ample "loading zones" in front of the building to conveniently load and unload your car! Call us for more info on condos at the Savoy.

Known informally as "220", this elegant Center City condominium building is located on the west side of Rittenhouse Square. With over eighty units and 25 stories tall, 220 has quite a presence on "The Square". Some fabulous penthouses top the building, and a public library is located on the first floor. One, two and three bedroom units are found in this building. Though most of these condos on Rittenhouse Square are known as flats, some bi-level luxury penthouse units do sit atop 220 W. Located at 210 W. Rittenhouse Square, "The Rittenhouse" is probably my favorite condo building in town. I think values in the building are heavily dependent upon whether you face Rittenhouse Square or otherwise, as the views of the square are fabulous and command a premium. The location speaks for itself. I recently named the building one of my TEN BEST in Center City and if my other half would allow, we would move into the building tomorrow. The Penthouse units are interesting at 210 W. Rittenhouse Square because they all have oversized balconies and fireplaces and the views are nothing short of spectacular.Click play below to hear more now!

Located at 237 S. 18th Street, The Barclay condos are a beautiful Rittenhouse Square landmark that has undergone a major renovation in the past few years Elegant and stately, this Pre-War style Rittenhouse Square condo building has a very large variety of unit sizes available, the Barclay exemplifies the luxury of a by-gone era. True Penthouses exist, though rarely available, in the fine piece of Philadelphia real estate. Though most all units are flats, a few bi-level condominium units do exist in the building. Sitting on the corner of 18th and Rittenhouse Streets, the Barclay is grand in its stately appearance. Many of the Barclay condos have been combined, and some of the largest condos on Rittenhouse Square can be found in this lovely apartment building, which is located on the east side of the square- not far from shopping and many cultural attractions. An elegant, modern styled Rittenhouse Square high-rise, known simply as "1820". Two units per floor (two large units per floor!), each (generally) having a tremendous view of "The Square". Parking on premises, this elegant building boasts one of the most prestigious addresses in the city. Rarely available, 1820 is wonderfully situated on the south side of the square. 24-hour doorman. Known simply to Philadelphia folks as "1820", 1820 Rittenhouse Condominium sits on the south side of Rittenhouse Square and was the first building back in the late 1980's to garner a sale price of $1M. A total of 31 units...an overwhelming majority are 3217 sq ft in size- and are divided up in between east and west units..simply mirror images of one another. Click play below to learn more now!

Known simply by Philadelphians as "1830", the condominium building sits on the south of Rittenhouse Square and was the first high-rise to appear on the Square back in the mid-1920's. Originally an apartment building- this Beaux Art styled building is hailed as one of the finest examples of pre-war architecture amongst the condo set here in Philadelphia. The condos at 1830 Rittenhouse are unique in the fact that very few- if any of the condos in the building are alike...having been broken up and added onto over the years. What few know is that there are two penthouse units here- and both are only accessible by taking the elevator to the 18th floor- then walking up a flight of stairs to reach those two condos....when built- these were the maid's quarters/apartments for the "help" in the building....and 1830 is the last remaining condominium building in town that have elevator attendants. The condos range in size from 1000 sq ft one bedroom units to entire floor condos which are over 5000 sq. ft. in size. I believe there may even be a few bi-level condos in the building....but I am pulling that from a shaded memory from years ago. The condos at 1830 Rittenhouse do not offer parking, but other options around Rittenhouse Sq. do exist. The doormen at 1830 are nothing short of kind and helpful. I have sold a few units in the building over the years- just know that there are not a lot of units in the building (41 total). A really fantastic groovy pre-war condo building with lots of cache and some terrific views of Rittenhouse Square. Click Play below to hear more now!
Temple University's Music Preparatory Division, or “Temple Music Prep” for short, is a program located in the heart of center city, Philadelphia, that provides high quality, non-credit music and dance instruction, and related activities to the Community on behalf of the Boyer College of Music and Dance, and Temple University at-large. World-renowned violinists Sarah Chang and Elena Urioste, as well as several members of the Philadelphia Orchestra share something in common: they were all participants of Temple Music Prep. I also started my own professional career right after graduating from Curtis as a theory teacher and chamber music coach at Temple Music Prep. To this day, I'm not sure who had more fun in my theory classes - the kids jumping up and down on the shaving cream staff lines I painted on the floor or the parents laughing outside my class! Anyway, I digress. This month, Temple Music Prep will be celebrating 30 years of excellence with a series of performances featuring students from their Center for Gifted Young Musicians, culminating in a gala concert on Saturday, May 13, 7:30 PM at the Church of the Holy Trinity on Rittenhouse Square. Before we visit some of the amazing students and teachers at Temple Music Prep, I want to point out that Temple Music Prep provides quality music and dance instruction to everyone at all ages and ability levels, from their early childhood and Suzuki programs to adult classes and community ensembles. In fact, some of the students we will listen to started participating at Temple Music Prep when they were toddlers themselves. It all did end badly for Max, but in his heyday, he was one of the richest gangsters in town and his legacy is The Franklin Mortgage and Investment Company. Thank goodness, alcohol is legal in this day and age, so Jason and Jon, General Manager & Head Bartender respectively, can do their job without fear of the cops rushing in at any moment..unless it’s to enjoy one of their very legal beverages. How many times does this happen to you? You are walking down the street dressed in a sari, a man stops you, asks who you are, tells you your bar is his favorite in America and wants to open one in India? Well, it happened to Anne Frey owner of 1 Tippling Place and she is here to tell us more. 1 Tippling Place is exactly the way Anne Frey wants it to be. She planned it that way. She longed for a local of her own and now there are going to be two: one in Philadelphia and one in Mumbai. After a trip to the UK, she fell in love with its cocktail culture and thought it would do well in Philadelphia. With help from Robin Honhold, now of White Lyan, and Dave Tang, a protégé of Sasha Petraske of Milk and Honey, she created a bar worthy of its neighborhood, the über-chic Rittenhouse Square. [caption id="attachment_7754" align="alignright" width="400"] Photo source: 1 Tippling Place[/caption] Everything is freshly made – syrups, juices, bitters - and ice is hand-cut! This constant attention to detail has been recognized by Food & Wine (24 Best Cocktail Bars in US), Roca Patron (People's Choice 100 Best Bars in America), Maxim, Chilled and Dujour magazines. (All you Vodka drinkers, don’t worry she has kept it on the menu, unlike a few snobbier places out there.) Now Anne is off to Mumbai again, after a extremely successful pop-up bar, to recreate a 1 Tippling Place in one of the busiest cities in the world. We can’t wait to hear all about it when she returns. Watch Chris Zingler of 1 Tippling Place make his Apple Bottom Gin Where you can hear me drinking next: The Greeks have been drinking Mastiha since Hippocrates was the Surgeon General. Mr. David's latest book, Bader Field, embodies the emotional story of a son's loving relationship with his father—the legendary art dealer whose life is suddenly taken by a massive coronary at the young age of fifty-eight years. His death plunges the twenty-four-year-old man onto the front lines of the family art business, which he had entered a mere three years prior. Battling with his own grief while trying to help his adoring but fragile mother survive, David forges forward with all of the elemental tools his father imparted to him. His journey proves a difficult one, not having yet recovered from the horrific loss of his brother who was found dead on the fourth floor of the Rittenhouse Square townhouse, which was home to the prestigious David David Gallery. His self-imposed obligation was to successfully take the family art business to the next generation and to give his own children, years later, every bit of love, kindness, and wisdom bestowed upon him by the unique man whom they will never know other than the mark he left on everyone who knew him. Bader Field adds significant insight into the mysterious workings and dealings of the art world. David speaks from experience of having been immersed in it all of his life and having lived it from the inside out. There will be a tremendous crossover interest in this book as it combines the elements of an American family, its goodness and its tragedy interfaced with the multifaceted aspects of the mysterious art business and flying small airplanes. Bader Field in Atlantic City was the oldest airfield in the country. With little sophistication, its two asphalt runways juggled single and twin engine aircraft exuding a character and charm that created memories to last a lifetime. That is where this saga begins and where it ends as life comes full circle.

Following his award-winning work on inner-city violence, Code of the Street, sociologist Elijah Anderson introduces the concept of the "cosmopolitan canopy" -- the urban island of civility that exists amidst the ghettos, suburbs, and ethnic enclaves where segregation is the norm. Under the cosmopolitan canopy, diverse peoples come together, and for the most part practice getting along. Anderson's study of this setting provides a new understanding of the complexities of present-day race relations and reveals the unique opportunities here for cross-cultural interaction. With compelling, meticulous descriptions of public spaces in Philadelphia -- 30th Street Station, Reading Terminal Market, Rittenhouse Square -- and quasi-public places like the modern-day workplace, Anderson provides a rich narrative account of how blacks and whites relate and redefine the color line in everyday public life.Elijah Anderson holds the William K. Lanman, Jr. Professorship in Sociology at Yale University, where he teaches and directs the Urban Ethnography Project. Recorded On: Thursday, June 9, 2011
