In this episode, host Janet Michael welcomes Brandy Hawkins Boies, Director of Public Relations and Special Events at Laurel Ridge Community College, Brenda Byard, Future Educators Academy coordinator, and Professor Lori Killough, Education Program Lead. They discuss the new Future Educators Academy (FEA) at Laurel Ridge Community College, designed to fast-track high school students into teaching careers. The program will partner with local high schools to offer dual enrollment courses that count towards both high school and college credits, enabling students to earn an Associate of Science degree in Education by the time they graduate from high school. The academy focuses on preparing students for elementary and special education teaching positions. Brenda explains that they started the program following Governor Youngkin's proposal for laboratory schools. Germanna Community College has already launched a similar program, and Laurel Ridge Community College plans to start theirs in the fall of 2025. The program includes "flex" Fridays, where students will participate in practicum placements, guest speaker sessions, field trips, tutoring, and test prep. Professor Killough mentions that the program targets 10th graders who apply to join in their junior year. It's free for students, including all materials and a computer. Brenda emphasizes that students need a 3.0 GPA and must have completed Algebra II but can also qualify through placement tests or standardized test scores. They discuss the application and selection process, revealing a lottery system to ensure fairness. The program encourages students to give back to their local communities by teaching in local schools for at least two years post-graduation. Both Lori and Brenda share personal anecdotes about the rewarding nature of teaching and the various career paths it can open up, from coaching to working in the textbook industry and beyond. Capel Green is a feature length documentary film which focuses on the life of Larry Warren, original witness and whistle-blower in the famous Rendlesham Forest Incidents as well as a myriad of military and civilian witnesses to these strange occurrences. Lori posted her 2022 reunion with Larry Warren on her YouTube channel. Both Lori and Larry say the vibe was off at RAF Bentwaters and you could feel it as soon as you stepped foot on the base. 19:09. Larry Warren says, "a hostility you couldn't see but there was a negativity you could feel." Originally aired 2021: Stationed at the 81st Security Police Squadron at RAF Bentwaters, in England, Lori Rehfeldt was present during the UFO events that occurred in 1980. Two encounters were reported. Hers was in Feb. 1980. The second event happened in Dec. after she left the base. She had no idea about the second event until discovering a book about it in 1997. Having had time to reconcile her experience at RAF Bentwaters and consider some of the other high strangeness and paranormal accounts in that area, Lori now offers additional insight from first hand experience. Her personal encounters include Greys, Mantid Beings, Ghosts, and others. She admits there were some locations on the base that made her feel extremely uncomfortable. Spooky and frightening. It wasn't all negative. At one point, she heard a voice instruct her not to turn around because it didn't want to scare her. She also had a verbal prompt to avoid going forward in a certain area. She acknowledged and turned away. She saw ghosts too. But it was the UFO encounter that changed her the most. During her thesis research: Mapping Daily Mobility in Metro Vancouver: An Ethnography of Regional Transportation for Newcomers Studying within the Service Industry, she was witness to the emergence of mobility as settlement and belonging in the region. In her professional role as the Executive Director of the Emily Carr Students' Union, she has spent over a decade, advocating, lobbying and when necessary – protesting – for the development of Metro Vancouver's deeply affordable post-secondary transit program, U-Pass BC. She has spent time during the pandemic questioning everything she has ever accepted as normal. Sadia Tabassum currently lives in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where she grew up. It's supposed to be one of the most “unlivable” cities in the world, but Sadia finds that livability is about as simple as the bus routes and schedules in Dhaka. Sadia studied Architecture as an undergraduate student in upstate New York in the US and later worked as a cost estimator for a rebar supplier company near Syracuse, NY. When she returned to Dhaka, Sadia worked as an architect for a few years before eventually working on the first light rail project in Dhaka, the new MRT line, drafting electrical and mechanical system drawings for its stations. She left that role to join the Urban Studies graduate program at SFU, during which time Sadia worked briefly as a designer/researcher for a non-profit organization in Vancouver where she helped create toolkits for social procurement among developers and suppliers in ongoing development projects. Sadia's current projects in Dhaka continue to be inspired by her love for architecture, sustainable design and innovative transit-oriented city planning that help create more accessible, equitable, sustainable and livable urban spaces. Lori Hall is the SVP of Assortment, Planning, & Allocation, for BJ's Wholesale Club. She joined BJ's in 1990 as an entry-level replenishment specialist and held various positions within merchandising and supply chain, advancing to her current role. Lori has now worked for BJ's for 31 years, transforming the supply chain as the company has grown from 22 clubs to 222. Kathryn Hall is a current MBA student at Bryant University. Kathryn has participated in multiple internships at both BJ's Wholesale Club and CVS Health. In September, Kathryn will be pursuing a full-time career at CVS as a Supply Chain Consultant. Both Lori and Kathryn received their undergraduate degrees from Bryant University. Today, they will be sharing their story on how Lori's career success has impacted Kathryn's ambition to pursue a career in leadership. Both women are passionate about empowering others to achieve their goals and build confidence.
