A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.comThe Mostly Middle Tennessee Business Podcast went remote in a *very* mostly way. We were invited to have a booth at the Music City Drum Show and talk to several drummers, entrepreneurs and manufacturers about the various facets of the music business. In this episode, I sat down with April Samuels with Breast Cancer can STICK It, and she's a musical entrepreneur of the highest degree!April picked up her first pair of sticks at age five at Nadine's Music Manor and was enthralled in private drum lessons at the same store by the age of 11 studying under former Bo Diddley/Ice Capades/Fifth Dimension drummer Warren White. April navigated her teens by playing in garage bands with her guitarist brother, Todd. Later, she expanded her study when she majored in music at the University of North Texas. As she developed her musical style, April co-wrote several songs used in episodes on the show "Outward Bound" on the Discovery Channel. April has since performed, recorded and/or written with 30+ different groups including an album with Matthew Johnson (formerly of Great White), two groups with David Harbour (formerly of Michael Harris, David T. Chastain, King Diamond), two groups with Dave Hineman (formerly of Solinger) and a group with Joey C. Jones.Since 2012 (aside from a year hiatus from April 2021-June 2022) Samuels has performed up to 120 shows a year across Texas and Louisiana with the 80s spoof-hair-band Metal Shop under the pseudonym "Crash Gordon" . Highlights during her tenure included headlining multiple times at the House of Blues locations in Dallas, Houston and New Orleans, as well as playing for over 15,000 attendees at a San Antonio Spurs watching game at AT&T Center.April's musical interests don't stop there. She ran a booking agency, 100 Proof Entertainment from 1989-2010, where she booked over 50 different regional bands - handling as many bands as 13 at one time. Because of this interest, she attended several seminars, exhibits, and music industry functions through the Dallas Songwriters Association, Austin Songwriters Group, South by Southwest the Sony R&B Workshop, and NAMM to name a few.April has also worked for Planet Dallas Studios (Dallas, TX) in the Publishing Department, worked as a salesperson for Texas Beat Magazine (Austin, TX), and was the assistant booking agent for the former club, The Basement (Dallas, TX).Currently, Samuels plays full-time with Metal Shop as well as Rebel Yell - The Tribute to Billy Idol, is the touring drummer for Just Like P!nk - The P!NK Experience, plays with two original bands (49th Vibration and her recently revived band BULLITT originally established in 2006), as well as playing fundraisers with her cover band, The Breast Cancer Can Stick It! Band. April was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of breast cancer in 2010 and immediately combined her passion for drums with her personal fight against cancer by founding her nonprofit organization Breast Cancer Can Stick It! Foundation, Inc.. April has been cancer-free since her mastectomy in November of 2010. Through performing shows, collaborating with celebrities for fundraisers, guest appearances and speaking events, April rocks year round both behind and in front of the drums.Follow April:https://www.aprilsamuels.com/https://www.breastcancercanstic

Lori Hi, how are you? Marlana I'm doing well. So, tell us how did you get into music in the first place? Lori Oh gosh, well, I was my first drum kit was probably age four or five. So, I feel like right out of the gate. I was already into music. And then I really didn't get into like school band and stuff probably until junior high. And so, I begged my parents you know, can I they tried me on you know, piano guitar, everything else. I just really wanted to play drums. So, I just had to beg them for a drum set and finally got into school band probably like ninth grade, which is a little bit later. Just bought my own drum set from a neighbor. You know, I saved up my money. And I think that kind of showed my parents that I was really serious and watch MTV nonstop. But I think that's that was my biggest teacher was just watching videos like seriously. headbangers ball, all that stuff. Marlana So, what was it about the drums though? Lori I don't know. I think I just have this internal clock. Internal just beat always going at I don't know, I even before MTV was a thing. I'm know I'm kind of dating myself, but I just was interested in so wherever I would see drums no matter what kind of if it was rock music, anything. I was just always glued to it. So that's kind of how I ever since I can remember really. So how were you able to Marlana make the leap into doing it as a career? Oh, man. Well, Lori it took a lot of work. But I think my story might be a little bit different than maybe the typical stories that you hear. So, I played a lot. In church, I played a lot with a friend of mine, like we'd had local bands probably had two or three local bands and a lot of worship team, you know, playing on Sunday mornings. And then a friend of mine that I grew up with Cory, she started to date this guy. And he was from Memphis. And fast forward. You know, he, he was in a band called skillet, and they got signed really young. And I got to be in their wedding, which is kind of...

I was surfing the internet looking for some new ideas for guests for the show when I happened upon April Samuels bio. Not only is she a kick a$$ drummer, she is also a survivor of breast cancer. April has been playing drums since the age of 5. She's played with garage bands with her older brother and later moved into the majors when she studied music at the University of North Texas. As April developed her own musical style, she began writing songs that have been used on the Discover Channel. She started her own booking agency where she booked over 50 different regional bands, handling as many as 13 at one time and continues to play 120 shows a year. April was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in in 2010. April decided she would start her own non-for-profit organization called "Breast Cancer Can Stick It". She has raised over $60,000.00 to date to help find a cure for breast cancer. April's motto "Breast Cancer Can Stick It" has been seen on T-Shirts, water bottles, bags, bass drum heads and cars across the country. April's unique, energetic and music-minded events rock the nation and now can ultimately STICK IT to breast cancer. Her upcoming Drummathon in Dallas, TX will host over 100 drummers to raise awareness and funds for the cure.
