She has photographed celebrities, WW II, events and people and so on. And I don't know what all being blind Do I look at pictures? No, not necessarily, but I appreciate them. Although my favorite joke is although people say a picture is worth 1000 words, I would point out that it takes up a whole lot more memory. So do it that much. But welcome to unstoppable mindset. How are you?   Marlana Semenza  02:01 I'm well thank you so much for having me.   Michael Hingson  02:03 Well, thanks for being here. And Marlena also has her own podcast and we will get to that and talk about that as we go forward. I'm sure why don't we start a little bit by maybe you telling us just about you growing up and kind of some of the the early things, you know, to sort of set the stage for what you did with your life.   Marlana Semenza  02:21 Well, I was actually born in New Jersey, and then my mother transplanted me to Connecticut when I was about 10. We're in New Jersey. I was born in Morristown, New Jersey. Okay. Then, when we got to Connecticut, it was in Fairfield County, Connecticut, I was in New Fairfield, which is about an hour north of Fairfield. But it was great because I never really lived more than an hour outside of New York City for most of my life. So that's a very rich culture. And you have access to a lot of a lot of things. My grandfather, who I adored, put a camera in my hand when I was a kid. And that was his hobby. And I because I idolized him and wanted to do everything he was doing. Then it became my hobby, and then later on became my profession.   Michael Hingson  03:18 I was reading your bio, and it said that you stepped on a tour bus and began a speaking career. What's that about?   Marlana Semenza  03:26 Well, not a speaking career. I've   Michael Hingson  03:27 not a speaking career but a career. Yeah, adventure.   Marlana Semenza  03:32 I graduated from college with a degree in photography. And before I went to Western Connecticut State in Danbury, Connecticut. Originally, I was going to go to Fordham for law. And what happened was, I didn't really want to have all the college debt. So I thought, Okay, well, I'm gonna go locally, somewhere for a year and get some common core under my belt. And I don't know why. I never, it never occurred to me that you could make a living in the arts, I don't know where I thought all of the photos in magazines and things came from. But once I realized that you could actually do it for a living that hobby then became what I wanted to do. But about, oh, six months or so before I graduated, a friend of mine was working for WWE, which actually at the time was WWF and Stamford, Connecticut. And he worked in the graphic design department. And they were looking for somebody to work in photo editing. So I went down to apply for the job in photo editing. And my soon to be boss came into the interview. And by the end of the interview, he said to me, do you have a problem with airplanes? And I said, Well, no. And he said, That's good, because instead of photo editing, you're going to be my assistant and I was given the time to meet, which was in the evening. I stepped on a tour bus. I was they pointed and said this is your bunk it was me and I think it was six guys And I had never watched wrestling in my life. I knew nothing about wrestling. And the next morning, I stepped off the bus, walked backstage at the arena and looked around and went, What have I done? But it's, yeah, it was, once I got past the initial shock of it all, it was actually an amazing, amazing experience that I'm eternally grateful for. Yeah.   Michael Hingson  05:27 So you, you started a career and certainly an adventure. No, no question about it. I had some experience with photographers after September 11. I was contacted by I don't even remember who but it had to do with the fact that I think PepsiCo had been involved in a campaign to raise funds for the families of people who perished on September 11. And they wanted people who had become visible. And I certainly had in the one of the things that they wanted to do was to put pictures of people into ads in USA Today. And so one November day, and I lived in New Jersey at the time, we lived in Westfield, but one November day, in 2001, I went into New York and went to the photographs photography studio of Richard Avedon. Oh, and of course, Richard Avedon, with the time was probably the most famous photographer in the world. Anyway, we, he took a picture of me and Roselle, it took about 45 minutes all together, and it was done. It was very enjoyable time very pleasurable to spend some time with him. And there we were, and I still have that picture to this day, which is great, because he sent me a copy.   Marlana Semenza  06:54 I love that. And that. As soon as you said his name, several images of his just flashed through my head. Like, yeah, oh, well, um, there's one of a woman jumping off the sidewalk, I believe that's his image with a umbrella. And I remember, I think there was another one that he shot of, I want to say it was Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller. But anyway, there's, there's several different images that I that popped into my head.   Michael Hingson  07:33 It was a very, as I said, pleasurable experience. And he was a person who clearly knew what what he was doing. And, you know, a lot of people said, Oh, you're going to be there all afternoon, because photographers take a long time. And clearly, it wasn't that way. He knew what he was about. He got the shot set up that he wanted, and we were done.   Marlana Semenza  07:55 Yeah. And, you know, it's interesting that you say that, because I've had people say to me, you know, do you work with assistants? And what kind of equipment do you bring with you to various sessions and things like that. And maybe it was all the years that I spent in studios, and lugging all kinds of gear around and things like that. But if I can't carry it on my person than in my head, I don't need it. And I think part of that also came from because I photograph weddings for a brief period of time in my life. And it's just that being free to kind of run and gun and, and use whatever you see and had the fluidity and the flexibility. And also to i i don't like a whole lot of people on set. I like it to be whoever I'm photographing and me because this is what we're going to make together.   Michael Hingson  08:49 You talking about. This just reminds me of the times after September 11. For me, when people started wanting to come in interview me the press heard the story. They got a hold of it, especially after appearing on Larry King Live. And literally we had hundreds of people, over a few months come to our home. And we had a number of television stations from around the world. And we had everything from one or two people from one station who came set up, did their interview and so on. All the way up to 14 people from one Italian station, who came in it took 14 People they felt to do the interviews, which was amazing. A couple of people just stood around and directed and didn't really do anything. And they had a number of camera people and it was just incredible. The number of people who came for that interview and we always wondered why but everyone is different.   Marlana Semenza  09:46 Yeah, you know, I sometimes wonder when people do that why? And you know, I have to say all of the photographer's that took the images from 911 because I lived up in Connecticut at the time You're right across the river really? Right? Um, I would not have been one of those photographers, because I know me and I would have been running and it would not have been a matter of, oh, let me capture this. And no, I would have been running,   Michael Hingson  10:18 as opposed to the two French photographers of the French people who actually recorded and had the first real recordings of that day, having seen the first plane go into the building, and they were there covering one of the fire stations, but they got probably the best early coverage of everything that eventually went into a documentary.   Marlana Semenza  10:40 Yeah, yeah, I give them all credit. But I would not have been wondering, yeah.   Michael Hingson  10:46 Well, I don't know you've done pretty well tell us more about WWE. So they showed you where your bunk was. And there you were. So tell us about that.   Marlana Semenza  10:54 Yeah. And I didn't even go away to college. So for me to climb on that bus and be a part of this. And for the first, I don't know, several months or so, it was showering in the arenas and get climbing back on the bus and going to the next place. And the job was held for me while I went back and finished my last semester at school. But, you know, then after that I graduated there were only maybe, I don't know, a handful of women on the road at that point. And so one of the producers and I, once they, once they decided, you know, I didn't have to ride the bus with the guys anymore. I got to go actually in a rental car and sleep in a hotel, like a, like a big girl. Christina and I traveled together a lot. And so that was nice, too. Because what that also allowed I was young, I was, you know, very, very early 20s. So that allowed me to be able to sometimes fly into a location early or out of a location later, if I wanted and be able to see a lot of the country. I saw 32 states and three years and a lot of them more than once.   Michael Hingson  12:09 What was it like being on the bus with with those guys, it had to be a little bit intimidating. If for no other reason being a woman or not, there are a whole lot bigger, and they're wrestlers. And you're not?   Marlana Semenza  12:21 Well, the fortunate thing is I didn't have to be on the bus with the wrestlers. That the bus that I was on, we were all of the people that had to be first at the arena. So it was my boss who was the head of production for for all the live events, my boss, the sound guys, the the riggers, things like that, that had to get the lighting, all set in the arena. So that's who I traveled with the wrestlers. The funny thing about it is most of them became almost like Big Brother ish to me. I am not a big girl. So I literally came up to most of their chest. And, you know, it was, it was just an amazing time and an amazing experience. And a lot of them were friends of mine up until, unfortunately, most of them are deceased. Now, the people that I worked with, but it was just a great time, it was a really, really great time.   Michael Hingson  13:29 But they valued you and they respected you. And do you think that they treated the other people all the other people that you rode with sort of the same way? Or were you special to them? Because you weren't,   Marlana Semenza  13:44 I mean, you know, you always have guys that are going to push it and and see, you know if they can get a rise out of you or, or, or try and review or something like that. And you know, we were no different. But at the end of the day. A lot of the things that other people may have experienced and I don't know what other people's experience was. But I know for me, I didn't have I wasn't put in bad positions. I wasn't put in, you know, they were they were good to me.   Michael Hingson  14:19 What great memories, huh? Yeah, that's cool. And then you got to go. Not on the same bus. Why did that happen? Just because you rose through the ranks and became kind of more of a of a higher end person or what? Oh, God,   Marlana Semenza  14:34 no. Just checking. I think it was just, you know, let's give the girl a break. Get her off the bus. You know, and I didn't really have to be there. At the time that everybody else has rode that bus had to be there. So I think it was just a kindness on my boss's part.   Michael Hingson  14:57 me recognize that you could be more efficient doing other things rather than just sitting around or sitting around waiting.   Marlana Semenza  15:02 Yeah, that can very well be the case. Well, well,   Michael Hingson  15:06 well think good thoughts. Yeah. How long did you do that for WWE for years? Well, then what did you   Marlana Semenza  15:15 do? I've always been freelance my whole life. So from there, I actually got off the road and did a bunch of work for a cartooning and animation company also. Because I had a minor in illustration. So I, that company we did the monsters comic book and the Tom and Jerry comic strip and animation sells for various places that were limited edition. And from there, I got to go out to Comic Con in San Diego with them, which Oh, boy. Yeah, I'll tell you. You think wrestling is crazy. Go to Comic Con. Tell us a whole nother experience for me.   Michael Hingson  15:55 I've never been to Comic Con. I've heard about it, you know a lot. But I'd love to hear some of your experiences.   Marlana Semenza  16:01 Um, once again, I was surrounded by people from people in Halloween costumes, pretty much in a dressing up as this superhero or that superhero. And when we went out there, it was when we were doing the monsters comic book. So we had Pat priest who was Maryland monster and Butch Patrick, who had played any monster out signing autographs and signing the comic books. And so, you know, we got to spend some time with them. And, you know, comic book artists are amazing artists, also. So, but there was a little bit of Have you ever seen the Big Bang Theory? Oh, lots. Yeah. Okay. I'm convinced. I saw lots of Shelton's and Leonard's and Rogers and Howard's walking around. Any pennies? I'm very, very, very think that. Yeah, I think the pennies were mostly the actresses that were paid to be the superheroes.   Michael Hingson  17:11 Got it. But you But you saw lots of the other characters?   Marlana Semenza  17:15 Oh, yes. Without a doubt, without a doubt.   Michael Hingson  17:18 Did you ever were any of the actual actors ever? There were like Jim Parsons, or any of them today?   Marlana Semenza  17:26 No. The only other than Pat Preston. Which Patrick the only other celebrity that I recall seeing there was Lou Ferrigno.   Michael Hingson  17:35 Oh, the Hulk.   Marlana Semenza  17:39 The original Hulk,   Michael Hingson  17:40 who original? Well, not the original one, but because it goes back before the cartoons. Yes. But original series. Yeah. Well,   Marlana Semenza  17:47 I guess what I'm getting at is that dates me but that's okay. I saw that hook. And then I used to also work with the other Hulk in wrestling. So yeah, yeah. Yeah.   Michael Hingson  17:57 Yeah. I mean, for a while original one. Yeah, he Well, there you go. See? Well, when hoax can can protect the body so it's okay. So, what did you do at Comic Con, you took pictures?   Marlana Semenza  18:10 No, actually, because when I worked for the cartooning and animation company was called animated arts. I was actually an artist assistant. So backgrounds and things like that the reason why they took me out to ComiCon was, so I could help be talent relations, because of my background with wrestling, and working with all of them. So that was mostly why I was. So what do you mean by that? I'm just getting people where they need to be when they needed to be there, making sure that they had what they needed. That type of thing.   Michael Hingson  18:49 So I know COVID has affected Comicon. Needless to say, but at the same time, I think we had ComiCon this year. Have you been   Marlana Semenza  18:57 back? No, I have not. I haven't been in years.   Michael Hingson  19:02 Do you want to go back?   Marlana Semenza  19:05 I would go back to work it again. I'm not a good I'm good in production. I'm not so good in the stance.   Michael Hingson  19:18 Not a good tourist. I'm not like rather than working.   Marlana Semenza  19:23 Yeah. Let me get my hands into it. And I'm better.   Michael Hingson  19:29 Cool. Well, so as a as a photographer, you must feel you do things that that make you stand out or make you different from other people so that people want to hire you what makes you different? What do you think makes you different than other photographers in the world?   Marlana Semenza  19:51 I think part of it is background. But I would also say another part of it is at the end of the day, I'm really not in the photography business. I'm in reputation business. So, because of that, it's, you know, photography is obviously the vessel that I use to help people tell their stories and stand out and create a reputation. But that's really the business that I'm in, not so much the image taking for the image taking sick.   Michael Hingson  20:21 So you want to tell stories,   Marlana Semenza  20:24 I want to tell stories, but I also, my job is to take what makes you valuable and unique. And relay that to the people that need to know it in a way that will connect. So it's, yeah, it's it's more than just the capturing of an image, there's a lot of strategy that goes into it. There's a lot of, okay, well, how can we make this effective? How can we, how can we make it connect these images connect and unique for the person that they're being created for?   Michael Hingson  21:01 So you have to develop a good, strong relationship with the clients, the people that you're working with? And I guess there's, in a sense, there's kind of two levels of clients, they're the people who may hire you, who may not actually be the people that you interact with, but then they're also the people that you interact with. And so there must be a lot of trust and teamwork involved and all that.   Marlana Semenza  21:26 Oh, absolutely. I think, especially as I was saying earlier, I like to be one on one with my clients, whenever possible. And because of that, I think that helps establish a level of trust, because it can be just us. And we, we know that we're in it together. And that I value their input, I think trust is essential in because I That's it goes back to working one on one with people. And because this is our creation together, so I value not just the person, but also their input and what we can make together. And, you know, there are a lot of people that just aren't comfortable in front of a camera, they become self conscious, or they don't know how to pose or how to act or how to be. And when you develop that level of trust that I've got you. And that's the whole thing that my clients know is I've got you. I guess it's much, much easier.   Michael Hingson  22:36 I think that's probably what impressed me now that I think back about it about Richard Avedon, because what he really did was very quickly established a level of trust, even if not saying anything, just his attitude and the way he worked. He did spend time wanting to learn about me. And I think that helped him to him deciding what he was going to do and how he was going to do it. But it was all about trust. And I think that no matter what we do, it's really all about trust, when people take the time to develop trust in and gain that trust, it doesn't get any better than that.   Marlana Semenza  23:11 Right. And you know, when I photograph someone, by the time we get to that point where I actually pressed the button, we have had several conversations. And we have, really, because the first thing that I do is there's a large questionnaire that they fill out. And then we dive into that in a meeting. And I've had clients cry during that process, I've had them you know, and what you uncover, just even at that point, develops a relationship that transcends just photographer, subject. And I just think that's really important. Because the better that I can understand you, the better that I can know You, the better these images are going to be, because they will then be more tailored to you and more unique to you.   Michael Hingson  24:09 So what do you actually go through to get people to trust you? What, what's your process?   Marlana Semenza  24:16 Um, like I said, there, there is a questionnaire. It's also it's a large level of honesty on my part, too, because am I fit for everyone? No. And that's okay. The goal is for them to have the best photographer for them. And if I am not that, then I think I need I would be doing them a disservice to not say that. And also, I know enough photographers that I can probably point you in the direction of somebody that will be a better fit for you. Doesn't mean that there's anything wrong with either one of us. It just means that there's somebody else better designed to tell your story and create those images with you than me. And I think it's that level of honesty He too.   Michael Hingson  25:02 So that is part of what you have to do to make sure that you do the best job for your client, which is something that ought to be true in, in general. Trust, it seems to me is so much under attack today in so many different ways, don't you think?   Marlana Semenza  25:18 Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. And I think the other thing, too, that that's under attack a lot, too, is humility. I look at humility as a beautiful thing, because it doesn't mean that you think less of yourself, it just means that you are teachable. And that you you think of others before you. And I think that that goes a long way also.   Michael Hingson  25:45 So now, how long have you been doing photography and doing the work that you do?   Marlana Semenza  25:51 I've been a photographer for probably 25 years doing this kind of work, personal brand, things like that. I'm probably about five Wow.   Michael Hingson  26:04 So what did what did you do? So you did the cartoon work? And ComiCon as you said years ago, what did you then go do   Marlana Semenza  26:12 I also have this next for you. Next after that is I went to do some freelance work for the photo department at Ethan Allen. And because I was in Danbury, Connecticut, and that's where their headquarters is and then from there I started to do set styling and design work for them I got to work on their New York Times ads and their style books and their training videos for their designers and their their magazines, things like that. So all of these things the the storytelling that I learned in wrestling and the creating of personas, the the thinking outside the box when it comes to cartooning and animation and creating something from scratch, the set styling and design, the location scouting, all it all of those things come together and that's what I can pull from to tell somebody story now.   Michael Hingson  27:12 So you've said that you don't work with everyone how quickly usually do you discover the you may not be the best fit for someone today,   Marlana Semenza  27:22 um, I can usually tell by one conversation and also combing their social media,   Michael Hingson  27:33 what kinds of things become cues or, or messages that somebody might be the right person for you to work with, as opposed to somebody who isn't?   Marlana Semenza  27:46 If they are the right person, usually, it's funny because the women that I tend to work with have what I refer to as the lashes and Lu batons factor, usually somewhere in in their story or somewhere in there. Their brand, is a bit of fashion is a bit of that beauty angle. But not always, but usually, that's an easy key for me, it's easier to tell who's not a fit. I have one client who has pushed me way out of my comfort zone. And normally he would not have been a good fit for me, he has done Naked and Afraid four times. And I'm just not an outdoorsy girl. I'm not a hiker, I'm not all those things. So normally somebody like that, I have a friend of mine who also does what I do, and she is a hiker, and will you know climb mountains and all those kinds of things. That would have been somebody I would probably have, you know, introduced to her as a better fit. But it turns out he and I want to be in a good fit so far. Even though the first snake I see I might be out of there. I can't guarantee   Michael Hingson  29:09 what what made you decide, though, that that you guys did click,   Marlana Semenza  29:14 um, personality. And there's a lot of trust on his end for me. And I also trust that on his end, when we are in situations that I'm uncomfortable that he's got my back. So I think it goes back to like you said, there's a lot of trust involved.   Michael Hingson  29:39 And you've been able to develop that. So of course, one of the natural things it's tempting to ask is Who are some celebrities that you've worked with over the years that people might have heard of,   Marlana Semenza  29:52 um, most of them would be in the wrestling vein. I've also had The opportunity. One of the first women that I worked with in the pageant community was a woman named Chesley Crist. And a lot of people would know her name at this point, too. She went on to be Miss USA, she went on to be a correspondent for extra TV. And she was just an amazing, amazing woman.   Michael Hingson  30:23 Well, tell us more, if you would, um,   Marlana Semenza  30:27 Chesley. When you met Chesley, she's the was a person that you never forgot. Whenever once you met her or spent any amount of time with her. I remember, when I first walked into the room with her the first time I met her. It was like, even the air turns turned into its attention to her. She was that captivating. She was that type of a presence. And she like I said she went on to be she was Miss North Carolina, USA, then she went on to be Miss USA. Then she went on to I think she finished in the top five or 10 at Miss Universe. I want to say five. And then she went on to be a correspondent for extra TV. And she unfortunately, in January of 2022, was in the news. Because at 30 years old, she committed suicide, she jumped off the 29th floor of her Manhattan high rise. And that opened up a lot for a lot of people. Because in the pageant industry, the pageant world that I knew, and the girls that I work with Chesley was the gold standard. And so for this to happen, it sent a lot of people reeling. Plus also, if you knew Chesley when I remember, when I first saw it in the news, I thought it had to be a mistake. But what it has fortunately done, I'm hoping and I'm seeing is that it's opening up a dialogue, that it's okay to say you're not okay. And for you know, the other thing that was so sad to me, because it's a bigger commentary that I think needs to be addressed is when she was 29. She did a an article for a law magazine. And in that article, she made the statement that she felt like she was running out of time to matter in society's eyes. And unfortunately for women, I think that that becomes a burden that men don't seem to face. We are are faced with this aging. And it is thrown up at us more so than it's thrown up at men. And we feel like we're on more of a timeline or a time crunch than a lot of men, unfortunately. And I'm hoping that that starts a dialogue around that. And hopefully that can change as well.   Michael Hingson  33:06 Yeah, it's it's a significant issue that that is always I think, in a sense been part of society. And maybe we should be fair and say plagued society that you got to look good. And if you don't, you're getting too old or whatever. And you're right, that doesn't tend to pressure men nearly as much as it does with women even so called sexy man. You never hear the same discussion about them that you do about women.   Marlana Semenza  33:38 Right? Here men, you know, oh my gosh, look at how distinguished he looks. Meanwhile, for us, it's good hold she looks. So yeah, that will at least start discussions.   Michael Hingson  33:50 Even if they try to make it a compliment she ages Well, still, it's the same thing. Yeah, exactly. Which is, which is really unfortunate. Well, so for you, you. Most of your business has been in what you do traveling, or do you do most of it from a particular place? How does that work for you?   Marlana Semenza  34:13 Um, I am currently situated just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. So a lot of my clients actually traveled to me only because I have everything that you could want here as far as backgrounds go, and things like that, if you need something specific. I have traveled to clients. But, you know, during COVID, when we all got thrown into captivity, mostly photography is a face to face. Sport, you know, and it could no longer be so I had to do a real shift. And my friend Claire that I mentioned earlier happened to see a lot of photographers doing photography on using FaceTime. So she's like, let's try this out. So we tried it out and In. Most photographers seem to be doing it for fun. And I thought this is a business model. So I've since then found an app that seems to work really well. And it allows me to take over the camera on your phone. So now I can photograph people remotely all over the world.   Michael Hingson  35:16 Tell me more about that, how does that work?   Marlana Semenza  35:20 I connect, I go through the same process, get to know them, and all that type of thing. So we know what kinds of images they need to create the, and then when we decide that we're going to connect, I connect from my computer to their phone, it'll like I said, it allows me to take over the camera on their phone, and I can still direct them, I can still capture the image, the images come to me so I can edit them. And the plus side is you can have content from anywhere. You don't have to worry about even if you're on vacation, and you decide you want photos, you don't have to worry about finding a photographer because you literally have one in your pocket. And the but the downside to it is if you're looking for images that are going to be on a billboard, or on the cover of a book, or any of those those types of things, this wouldn't be the right platform for that only because it the capture isn't large enough for that. But for social media, or any kind of you can even put them on a website if you needed to, or something like that. But definitely for social media, it's perfect. And a lot of people that's the content that they need. They need to to keep generating. And this way, you don't have to rely on selfies, because I got you.   Michael Hingson  36:39 How does it? Well, that's, that's fair, I think to ask how does that work as opposed to a selfie? What? What's the difference?   Marlana Semenza  36:47 Um, I'm actually doing the photo. So I'm still taking the shot. So all's they have to do is if they, you can do it one of two ways. You can either put your phone on a tripod, you can prop it up on something I've had people stick it in their shoe, if they're out on a beach. And this way, I can just direct and shoot.   Michael Hingson  37:13 So when you get the shot you want you take it. Exactly, exactly. So as long as people have a good phone connection or a good internet connection,   Marlana Semenza  37:22 it it helps to have to be connected to Wi Fi. But you do not have to be you do not have to be when the images download, I kind of need you to be on Wi Fi. But but you don't necessarily have to be for me to take them.   Michael Hingson  37:38 So what kinds of environments or scenes have you taken pictures in using this app? So I've done some interesting things.   Marlana Semenza  37:48 I've done photos for a couple on a beach in Kennebunkport, I've done photos for a woman who is a business coach at her home in Mexico, I've done some photos at a NASCAR event, a realtor out in California. So it's, it can be anywhere, it really can.   Michael Hingson  38:10 Do you find it more difficult in any way to if you will take the picture remotely in terms of setting the scene getting things the way you want, then if you were actually there,   Marlana Semenza  38:23 what becomes more difficult is you have to be more than the photographer, you have to be very clear about direction. And because I have to kind of teach the person on the other end to be me, as well as be in the scene. So what has been helpful too is if I can get somebody on their end, that becomes what are referred to as the voice activated tripod, which all they do is hold the phone and they go up down left, right if I ask them to. And that just makes things go faster. But the app allows me to depending on the make and model of your phone to zoom in and out and really utilize the different features of your camera, which makes it fun.   Michael Hingson  39:11 And you do all that part of it. I do? Yes. Because you can control that from the app.   Marlana Semenza  39:16 What's that called? It's called shutter app.   Michael Hingson  39:20 And the whole idea is using the app that someone else actually takes the picture and becomes the photographer and the the active person and setting up the shot. Yeah. And then the person who has the phone is, is well are rather the person whose phone it is that you put the app on who you want to take a picture of is is still the subject but you get to still do the active things that you want to do to set.   Marlana Semenza  39:47 Exactly, exactly. And you know, there are things that it helps to have a professional do even even in a case like that because when it comes to posing and things like that. I know how to pose you, I know how to pose you quickly. I know how, you know if, and one of the things I usually ask women especially is, are there any areas of your body that you want to highlight or hide? And if, if they say, you know, well, yeah, I want to look thinner, which seems to be an ongoing thing. There are poses just little tweaks in your body that I can make, that will make you look better on camera,   Michael Hingson  40:31 is that more in adjustments that you make, or how you position the camera, or what   Marlana Semenza  40:37 it depends in, in real life, or in face to face, some of it is positioning, some of it is lens choice, stuff like that, when it comes to the phone, some of it is zooming in and out with the lens if I had that ability, but a lot of it too, is just making tweaks and of how to position your body   Michael Hingson  41:02 with a camera. photographers taking pictures have the opportunity to put different lenses on depending on what they want to do. Is any of that available for phones where you can depend on   Marlana Semenza  41:15 the model? Well, it depends on the model of your phone, too. I haven't had anyone that has any external lenses, or any of that kind of thing that they can hook onto there. But for example, the iPhone does give you the opportunity to go wide angle, and to zoom in and things like that. So it really just depends on the make and model of your phone. What's available to me.   Michael Hingson  41:39 But there aren't additional hardware options that you can can add or have to It's my   Marlana Semenza  41:44 it's my understanding, I think there are attachments that you can get for the phone. But I'm, I'm uncertain as to what all those are. Because most of the time I'm hauling around a mirrorless full frame camera. So right, yeah.   Michael Hingson  42:06 Well, what is next for you. So you've, you have made changes in what you do with COVID. And you use shutter app and you're able to do a lot via the phone now. What's next,   Marlana Semenza  42:19 I just want to continue to work with people and make them stand out and shine. That's what makes me happy. I don't like to be the it's never about me. It's always about the people that I'm working with. And I just want to see them succeed. And I want to see them be everything that they want to be and dream about being. And so if I can help them get there, then that makes me very happy.   Michael Hingson  42:44 Which also is part of the whole trust thing. Because if you can get people to understand this is an ego for you. But that you love doing what you do, and it's all about doing the best thing for them. That's gotta   Marlana Semenza  42:58 help. Yeah, yeah, it's never about me, which is cool.   Michael Hingson  43:02 What made you end up in Raleigh from being in Connecticut? Well,   Marlana Semenza  43:07 from growing up in Connecticut, the year before we moved, I have photos of my husband out shoveling the snow that was waist deep. And I had enough. I had had enough of that. You know, when winter strikes when you're up in New England, you know that you're gonna buckle up and you're in for about six months and misery. And so I wanted a more temperate climate. My grandmother had been out in the Arizona area. And that wasn't really my thing. I really liked the East Coast. So he started applying for jobs. He got a job down here. And that was the end of that. What does he do? He's in sales.   Michael Hingson  43:55 So what kind of interesting shots well, so let me do this first. Have you had much snow in Raleigh, then do you get snow there?   Marlana Semenza  44:03 We get snow. It's not a whole lot of snow, at least not since I've lived here. And it's funny because it does turn to ice very quickly. But for the most part, when we get snow, it's gone in a day, maybe two days. I remember the first time that we had just bought our house. And it snowed, maybe about three inches, and for lack of something to do my husband and I were out with a dirt shovel shoveling the driveway. And my neighbor came out and she stroked my arm and she said we just let that melt here.   Michael Hingson  44:37 And you kind of had this epiphany.   Marlana Semenza  44:39 Yeah, but it's nice because it's pretty. And it stays pretty. Because it never gets to be that.   Michael Hingson  44:48 Frozen that   Marlana Semenza  44:49 exactly and that that brown and you know, gray snow that has all the salt in it and things like that. It just doesn't get to that point.   Michael Hingson  44:58 Right which is pretty cool. All, huh? Have you had any interesting pictures or shots around North Carolina,   Marlana Semenza  45:06 I have actually, I just, I had been wanting to use this one location. And I'm still searching for locations here. Because I, I feel like there's so much and so much that I don't know about. And I also love taking photos, and doing kind of like a juxtaposition of something beautiful in the middle of chaos or things like that. So for example, there was a shot that I did for a dress designer a few years back. And the way the dress was, it was this denim dress. But I felt like it needed to be shot in just a warehouse or something like that. Well, instead, we wound up going to a scrap metal yard. And we had the best time got some amazing images of distress in the scrap metal yard. And just about a week or so ago, there's an location that I'd been wanting to use for years. And it's the remains of an old hospital. And it's fenced in, and it's on the campus of St. Augustine University in Raleigh. And fortunately, because my relationship with the Miss North Carolina organization, I was going to photograph Miss North Carolina and and I said, How about that, and they called and made it happen. And it was, it was the most amazing place. But I love things like that, just these gems of places. And that's why I like to shoot on location.   Michael Hingson  46:39 What's the most interesting or unique location where you ever done a shot?   Marlana Semenza  46:44 I didn't know that scrap metal yard was pretty, pretty interesting. The interesting it was because when we first got there, the gentleman that owned the property, we got the the lowdown on we'll stay at that area over there, because that's where the rats are and, and don't go over here and and like I said, I'm not, I'm not a critter kind of girl, I don't like critters. So that was an eye opener for me. But they were so lovely. And so wonderful. And by about halfway through the session, the manager came out and he's like, do you want us to move anything around for you or help you out with anything? And they were they were fantastic. They're fantastic to work with?   Michael Hingson  47:25 Is there any place that's kind of on your bucket list that you want to do a shoot that you no matter can think of?   Marlana Semenza  47:34 I don't know. Um, a lot of them as I find them, I'm, I'm slowly being able to check them off. I also came out of wedding retirement a few years back to do a wedding over at the Biltmore, which was pretty amazing to that. That's quite a place.   Michael Hingson  47:55 Well, if people want to learn more about you and reach out to you, whether it's to see if you're a good fit, or just learn about what you do, how do they do that?   Marlana Semenza  48:05 The best thing is to just go to my website, which is Marlenasemenza.com.   Michael Hingson  48:09 Can you spell it please,   Marlana Semenza  48:10 it's M a, r l a n a. Rich Chambers - Songwriter/Producer/Musician/Singer Does anyone still use the term "rock n' roll" anymore? Rich Chambers certainly does. In fact, he specializes in it, bringing us all the fun, excitement, and energy from the early days of rock n' roll in a uniquely fresh way built specifically for the 2020s.  Starting with the 2019 release of his Christmas album, “Santa's Rockin' Band,” Rich has been on a roll. His Christmas album produced one single, “the Snow Miser vs. Heat Miser,” which has been streamed more than one million times on Spotify to date. Following this has been six single releases beginning in January 2021, including his film festival award-winning video for his rock original, "I'm So Tired,” which has received accolades in over 50 film festivals across the globe for its hard-hitting social commentary. His most recent release is his guitar-driven version of the Beatles, “I Saw Her Standing There,” which debuted in March 2022 to high critical acclaim.  Rich's music videos have received a combined total of well over 500,000 views, and his Spotify streaming is clocking in at approximately 25,000 listeners a month and growing. With more single and album releases planned for 2022, Chambers is making his mark as a rock n' roll artist to watch for. As one music journalist recently said in the FLEX music blog about Chambers, who hails from Langley, British Columbia: "One of Canada's best-kept secrets, Rich Chambers could easily become a household name in a matter of months!" With bombastic guitars and a vocal style that oozes rock n' roll. Rich Chambers is giving us something that rock n' roll has not seen in quite some time—energy and fun. Welcome Rich!  Rich Hey! Thanks for that. That's a cool introduction. I like that. Thank you. Marlana   What makes your story a bit unique is that you're actually circling back around to a passion that you couldn't let go of. So, talk to us a little bit about that. Rich Correct. I mean, I'm a middle-aged rocker. And it's like most musicians, I've been doing this since I was a little kid, I picked up the guitar at 10 and started writing songs of fourteen. And that's where I got absolutely hooked, songwriting was what did it for me. If it weren't for songwriting, I would just be a hobbyist guitar player and singer, but you put songwriting in the mix, and I went nuts with it. And that's been one of my huge passions is but like many, you know, life journeys, things happen. And when I got out of high school, I was going to be the next rock star. A few cheesy days later, and about a year into that I realize, oh, this is going nowhere. I didn't want the smartest things I could have ever done when I went back to school. And then I pursued went further on as a kid very barely passed high school, I finished a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in it for a while was actually toying with PhD work. Now you can receive the benefit of Frederick's mentorship and experience through his book Business Superfans. Welcome, Frederick.  Frederick   Good morning!  Marlana   So first, explain to us what exactly is a superfan? How would you define that? Frederick   Let's think of a sports team. So, the best way I can explain that is, we've all watched football or European soccer or baseball and stuff, and we'll see the fan that's in there. And it's got their faces painted. They got the jerseys on they got the hats; they got the banners; they got the bumper stickers on their cars. That's a superfan. And, you know, they're enthralled and just energized, and their energy's contagious, and they're promoting their team? And if you think about it, is the sports team paying them for that? No. So are they making money off for their merchandise? Of course.  So, they're getting free publicity. They're getting somewhere that it's talking about the team and all that PR, they're getting other people sucked into the team to watch the team and everything else. So, the idea came about through my sales experience for many, many years was Why can't a business apply the same methodology to create their own superfans for their business to become promoting them? So, you know, there's people talk about brand advocates? Well, you know, I look at it as Okay, brand advocates cool. But a super fan is super cool. Because it's in my mind is supersedes the advocate, because they're in a sense fanatic of the business, and...

Tosha Jones, Musician From playing small, smokey bars in southern Indiana, to touring world wide with national music acts, Los Angeles based heavy hitting drummer, Tosha Jones, quickly made a name for herself throughout the world's music scene. At just the ripe age of three, Tosha began expressing herself through music, song, and dance. In 1991 as a true drummer at heart, Tosha joined her jr. high school band and eventually begged her parents for a real drum kit instead of playing on various pots and pans and her mother's Tupperware. Stemming from numerous garage bands and many Battle of the Band competitions throughout the Midwest, Jones finally jumped ship from working multiple factory jobs in Indiana and saved up enough money to move to Los Angeles, California as she immediately landed the Vans Warped Tour in 2008 with then, all-female punk rockers, The Randies.  Respectfully, after years of rejected auditions and trudging the streets of the Sunset Strip along Hollywood, Jones found herself in various bands on the road opening for national rock acts such as Stone Sour, Halestorm, Seether, & Skid Row, while eventually landing a long tour stint playing drums for Grammy nominated rock band, Saliva in March of 2018. As one of her personal career favorites, Tosha was contacted by American Idol (2015) to play in an all-female drum line for contestant Tyanna Jones, performing the song “Run The World” by Beyoncé.  Fast forward to Covid-19's protocols and cancellations in 2019/2020, and unfortunately like many other musicians finding themselves away from touring, Jones was part of numerous collaboration videos online which includes Sheltering Sky's Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot) in their 2021 Björk's cover “Army of Me”, and most recently “Throwin' Stones”, which hit on the recent attack of Ukraine. Jones was also featured in artist/singer, Chloe Trujillo's videos, “Mana” and “The Heaviest Sound is Silence”. You can also find Tosha playing drums online in the star-studded cast for the David Z Foundation covering “Zombie”, by Bad Wolves.  In December 2021, Jones was asked to play drums on a few tour dates for alt rockers Carolina Liar, best known for their hit songs “Show Me What I'm Looking For” and “I'm Not Over”. In January of 2022, Jones received a last-minute call to bash the skins for the fresh hard rockers, Black Satellite, as they were direct support for Nita Strauss's  (Alice Cooper, The Iron Maidens) 2022 Winter Wonderland Tour. In Spring of ‘22, Jones was invited to be a camp counselor for the famous Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp where iconic musicians such as Melissa Etheridge, Nancy Wilson (Heart), and Kathy Valentine from The Go-Go's were the special guests. Though We Stumble, We Shall Not FallPsalm 37:23-24 “Our steps are made firm by the Lord, when he delights in our way;  though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong, for the Lord holds us by the hand.”I have read that verse several times today and yet this time when I read it I got the image of toddler walking along the sidewalk while he is holding his daddy's hand.  When we are just learning to walk we definitely stumble and sometimes we even fall.  We fall because we are learning something new.  We fall because we are letting go of the safety of the wall, couch, or coffee table and venture out on our own.  It is not a bad thing when we fall as long as we get back up and try again.  It is expected to take time to learn something new.  It is part of the journey.  If we never let go of that safety net we will never learn what we are capable of.  What I love about this verse though is that it says we will stumble, but we will not fall because God hold us by the hand.  God allows us to venture out into the unknown, but we are not alone.  He doesn't send us out alone, he holds our hand.  He allows us to stumble, but we don't fall headfirst into the ground.  We stumble and He steadies us.  To me that is a great image.  The beginning line of this verse says, “Our steps are made firm by the Lord, when he delights in our way.”  I found the word “when” an interesting addition to this sentence.  I was wondering why it was there.  I know the words in the Bible are chosen carefully so what does that first sentence mean?  The first thought that came to me was maybe when our steps are unsteady and weak, we aren't doing what the Lord wants us to do.  Maybe we are like a child venturing out on our own.  We aren't waiting for the Lord to hold our hand, we are just heading out without him.  Have you ever done this? Saw something you wanted and went after it.  You didn't stop to ask God if it was right for you?  You didn't stop to weigh the pros and cons, you didn't really give it much thought at all.  It all seemed too good to be true and so you ran after it.  Yep, me too.  How did it work out for you?  Was it all you thought it would be?  The thought that keeps coming up in my mind is, “Not every opportunity is from God.”  If something feels too good to be true, this is a great time to pause and examine the situation.    I am definitely an optimist so you won't find me raining on your parade.  Maybe it is exactly what you have been praying for.  Maybe God gave this opportunity to you as an answer to your prayers.  God does do amazing things.  Often times God's plan do seem too good to be true.  This is not me telling you if it seems too good to be true it probably is.  What I am saying is if the opportunity is from God He won't mind if you pause to consult Him about it.  He will like it if you take time to pray about it.  Even if that time is 5 minutes.  A job may come up and you may not have a lot of time to consider it, that's ok.  Take a few minutes, catch your breath and ask God what He thinks.  Ask Him for guidance and see what he says, or how you feel about the job after you have talked to God about it.  Have you ever rushed into the perfect opportunity because you thought it was the answer to your prayers and it wasn't?  This can happen when we don't stop and invite God into our decision making.  For instance, we have been praying for more money and then a promotion becomes available.  We decide, without talking to God, this promotion is the answer to all of our prayers.  However, when we get the promotion we find out it has a lot of travel attached to it, or longer hours and now we never get to spend time with our family.  Not every opportunity is from God.  Sometimes the enemy offers us things that seem like what we want but aren't actually good for us.  For instance we want to be rich and powerful and we achieve it and yet we are not happy.  These opportunities, or maybe the desires, might be from the enemy.  We live in a fast paced world and sometimes it seems like we have to do everything so quickly.  We feel as though we don't have 5 minutes to stop and think.  If you don't have time to pause and consult the Lord then I don't believe that opportunity is from the Lord.  I think that is the enemy trying to get you to make decisions based on your feelings instead of your thoughts.  Our feelings can betray us.  When we are acting solely upon our feelings we are letting go of God's hand and telling Him we can walk on our own.  We are telling God we don't need Him.  Our feelings don't have our overall best interest at heart.  Our feelings are based on our temporary happiness.  Their goal is to make us feel good in the moment.  For instance, we might eat some macaroni and cheese for dinner because are feeling sad today and want to feel happy.  However, how is that macaroni and cheese going to make you feel when you no longer fit into your clothing.  We might take a job that seems good and pays a lot of money because we feel scared that we won't have enough money to pay the bills.  However, how much are you going to enjoy that job when you find out you never get to see your family.  Do you see how your feeling can betray you.  The verse says, “Our steps are made firm by the Lord, when he delights in our way;  though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong, for the Lord holds us by the hand.”  When we stop and consult God, ask Him what He wants us to do, invite Him into the situation, our steps are made firm.  When we pause and grab hold of God's hand He will lead us.  This doesn't mean everything will be perfect.  We will still stumble, but we won't fall.  God hold's tight to our hand.  Yes, he allows us to stumble, and that is because when we stumble we learn, when we stumble we become more resilient, when we stumble we learn to lean on Him  more.  However, He does not allow us to fall headlong.  He catches us and sets us on solid ground once again.Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today.  Lord, we are so grateful that you make firm our steps.  We are grateful you allow us to stumble because that is where we grow and yet you don't allow us to fall.  You are there to catch us.  You hold our hand gently guiding through these uncharted waters.  Lord, we are sorry for all those times when we run off without you and do the things we want to do.  We are sorry for the times when we don't consult you.  We know you know better than we do.  We know your ways are higher than our ways.  Help give us the strength to pause and invite you into our decisions.  Help give us the patience to wait on your timing.  We love you Lord and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus holy name, Amen.  Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.  Tomorrow's guest is one of my dearest friends Marlana.  We met in NJ just after we both became mothers for the first time.  We met at a prayer group with several other ladies. These ladies will forever hold a special place in my heart because we all learned how to be mothers together.  We were there for each other through all the craziness of being a first time mom and we were all there for each other when we each brought a second, and sometimes third baby into the family.  Our spouses were all in the military and we also got to support each other through many different deployments.  Marlana is going to talk to us about how she learned about the importance of obedience to the Lord, especially when you don't understand why He is asking you to do the things He is asking you to do.  She has an incredible story of how her obedience helped her grow closer to the Lord and her family grow closer together.  I know you are going to love her story as much as I do and I can't wait to share it with you tomorrow.  Have a blessed day!

Welcome Jones. Jones   Oh, pleasure to be here with you, Marlana. Thanks for the opportunity to talk about a subject near and dear to my heart, which is making the best choices with your time. Marlana   And honestly, sometimes a subject that I can be a hot mess with. So why do you think we struggle with time management? Jones   Well, first of all, let me say this, I don't have it all figured out. If I tell a lot of people that when I do have it all figured out, I'll be dead, and it won't matter. You know because it is such a difficult topic. I think one of the things that happens for many people is it's just this whole term time management. You know, we really don't manage time, as Charlie Gilkey says, you know, we manage schedules, we manage energy, we manage choices, time can only be accounted for. It's only in the rearview mirror can we look back and go, Oh, yeah, that was not a good choice, which led to taking too much time with this and those kinds of things? And answer to your question, the reason I think we struggle is because we have so many competing demands on our time and competing expectations, you know, what we expect of ourselves, what our boss expects of us, what our family expects of us. And so sometimes it's hard to cut through the clutter, and figure out what is the best choice for me to make in this moment, and then you add in, you know, poor energy levels, so we don't have the mental energy to make the best decisions or to hold on to those healthy boundaries, that I think it's just a cadre of reasons that bring us to the point of we as not making the best choices with your time. Marlana   You know, it's interesting because I believe that people don't seem to understand that everything comes at a cost. The cost does not necessarily have to be monetary, but if we say yes to something, then we're saying no to something else, because we only have a limited amount of time. So even if we say yes to something that we want to do or saying no to maybe another choice that we could have made or relaxing or anything, there's always a give and take here. That being the case, how do we make better choices? Jones   I think it starts with stopping. And I know that sounds strange, but I make the comment sometimes that I think we're so busy checking boxes, we haven't stopped to ask ourselves, are these the right boxes to check? And so, I think it starts with stopping and giving yourself some space to say, what is important to me and to even step back? What are my values? What do I value? What's my purpose? I mean, I think it really starts with getting to that deeper level, and saying, what is it I want from my life, from my work, from the choices that I'm...

Welcome, Theresa.    Theresa    Thanks. Thanks for having me.    Marlana    So first, tell everybody a little bit about your background and how you got to this point.    Theresa    Yeah, that's a great question. So, I started my entrepreneurial journey, owning gyms, I had a couple of health clubs here in the Tampa Bay area. And at that time, I was also a very new mom with two little nuggets and kind of a new wife and a lot going on. And I just decided that that whole brick and mortar membership-based business is not my favorite thing, and not gonna work for me. I ended up getting really sick just from stress. Because as you know, when you're a new mom, you don't sleep a lot. I have a lot on my plate, I ended up closing one gym and selling another recipe for nothing, we ended up actually bankrupting. And in that time, I kind of took off when I was not feeling well. And I was like, You know what, I'm just gonna take a year off and kind of forget what I want to do. And Instagram had just come out. And I was like, just kind of fiddling around on there. And like, I remember not even knowing how to put a post-up, I was kind of like, how do you even use this app? It's so weird. I have no idea what I'm doing. But long story short, at that time, I had owned the gyms, but I had never done anything with like competitive fitness. And I had this year that I was like, not really working. So, I was kind of like, you know what, I'm gonna do a fitness show because it scares the *** out of me. And if I'm scared of something that means I have to do it. So, it was like, You know what, let me just lean in, I'm gonna commit to one. And so, at that time, I started using Instagram and I was like posting my journey of doing this kind of fitness show. And I was just started growing followers and back then it was like, so easy to grow so different than it is now you know? And so, I was kind of like when the OG fitness people on Instagram. It was like me and Natalie. Becca surname, Natalie Skye. And or no knowledge will fit and Emily sky. There was a couple of us that really started back then. And so, I kind of just started really kind of like, oh, well, maybe there's something here with this whole Instagram thing. And I wrote an e book. It was called The Kinney Mom's Secrets. And I remember I sold $5,000 In one day to my Instagram audience. And I was like, Whoa, I was like, Okay, there's a business here, like this is something is happening.     I got very serious about it actually started building other marketing pages on Instagram. I like what 100% And I was doing, like, I had these huge brand pages that I would sell ads on or leverage them to build my page. I did all this stuff on Instagram. And so, I did that for a while until I actually started a whole online fitness business...

She is proud to be a first generation college graduate in May 2022. And a debt free one thanks to the Miss North Carolina and Miss America organizations. Welcome Carli.    Carli    Hi, thank you so much for having me today. Well, I'm so so excited to do this.    Marlana    So here's the thing. June of 2021, they announced your name, you win a title and you get thrown into the public eye. What has been the best part of that? Oh,    Carli    my goodness, that's such a hard question to start off with. But I get this question quite often. And what I always say and what will probably always be my answer is the amount of people that I've been able to meet, but the amount of different types of people I've been able to meet, in one weekend, I could be at the poetry Jubilee, and then at a senior citizen center, and then reading to students. And you know, you never get to really understand how broad our state is, as a community and how, how different we are and how special and unique that is, until you're kind of in a position like this. So I've been super, super grateful for that. And being able to make so many connections this year, and hopefully, some professional connections going forward. And it's just the journey of being myself. I think, in this conversation, we'll get into it more. But that's what a lot of people forget. When the crown gets put on your head, or you get an amazing opportunity, they forget that you're an actual human being with actual real human being problems, too. So it's been difficult to balance everything, especially still being a full time student. I'm graduating in a couple of days from Appalachian State. So being able to balance everything has been kind of chaotic, but I couldn't have done it without the amazing support system I have, and how welcoming our state has been of myself, even with all the challenges that I brought to my, to the table on my own.    Marlana    So what do you think, has been the most difficult part of the job or the part that you wish that you had been either better prepared for or better warned about?    Carli    Right. So I think in today's society as a whole, the role of a title holder, especially in the Miss America organization, has turned from, she's still a social advocate in her community, but even more, so she has to be able to display that on social media, and almost become more of an influencer on social media. So that was something I was completely uncomfortable with. Moving into this role, I didn't have that pretty much of a social media presence to begin with. I wasn't super comfortable talking and being candid and transparent on social media. So at the...

But when not working with business leaders, Coach Kon gives back to his community by developing young soccer players in the local state and Olympic development programs. Thank you so much for being here. Kon Pleasure to be here with you Marlana. Marlana So, that's where I really want to start, and use it as a jumping off point; your work with athletes, because competition is a very interesting topic to me. And I really think that women and girls are conditioned and trained differently than boys to deal with it. And I was just curious, what has been your experience in how men and women differ when it comes to competitions? Kon That's a very interesting question. The simplest way that I answer that question, when I get asked is that boys need to play well or play good to feel good. Girls need to feel good to play well. The origin of their validation for themselves, typically, and without trying to be stereotypical. But in general, there is an element of thoughtfulness to a girl's play, to a woman's play, she needs to understand why they're not opposed to getting dirty and getting out there and working hard and doing all those things. But they have to understand why boys don't give it a second thought. They'll jump in there. And they have to get out there and get dirty and wrestle with things in order to feel good, because it's that activity itself, that brings joy to them and satisfaction, whereas with the girls, they need to understand why we're asking them to do that, in order for them to commit to go down that path. And much of the origin of that has its roots in how we raise boys and girls. Talk to me about that. Kon Well, there's an interesting thing to think about it this way, we spend a lot of time for anybody that has children of both genders. Typically, with the boys, we have no problem, sending them out to go get dirty to wrestle in the mud, to go play, to be physical to do all of those things. Anything that they do, and they beat up on each other, we see as healthy competition between males. We don't do the same with girls. We typically emphasize prettiness, we emphasize good behavior, we emphasize speech, we emphasize other elements of who they are, as opposed to the physical attributes, which are associated with athleticism. Marlana So, let's go back to good behavior. Because it seems to me when we look at instances,...

He's previously written two books on marketing dabbled in some stand up and improv comedy acted in bed movies and excellent TV commercials once beat Sir Richard Branson and chess and was a question on Jeopardy. He's an avid cyclist, a below average tennis player and an even worse golfer. But today, despite all of that material, we are actually going to talk about the subject of his latest book, which is Super Bold, From Under Confident Charismatic in 90 Days. Welcome, Fred. Fred Thank you very much, Marlana. I'm very excited to be here and talk to your audience. Marlana So, tell us first, what exactly does super bold mean? Fred Super Bowl means that it's bold. And I always have to remind people it's bold, not super ball, it's not a book about football. And, but when you are super bold, you can bring your full confidence into action in every situation, especially when it really matters, when it's critical, when it's important, when it's pivotal in your life. And that takes building your boldness muscle that nobody's born with this, some people are bolder, a little bit by nature and a little bit by nurture, and most of us are confident in some situations and hesitant and shy in other situations very often when they're really important. So, the goal is to develop this ability to summon your boldness in every situation. And so, that's what I teach in the book because that's what I had to teach myself. Marlana So, let me ask you this for somebody who would not consider herself to be a bold person, is that something that all of us can learn? Because what if we feel we just don't have it in us? Fred Well, as long as you can speak or sign even, you have it in you, it is not a genetic thing to be shy or introverted. It is mostly some level of socialization and programming and imprinting from parents and things like that. And, of course, the majority of it is the stuff we tell ourselves that we are not worthy of and that we are not good at. And we have an enormous list of what we're not good at, I can't dance, I can't sing, I'm not good at math. I don't like public speaking. I can't sell all of these things. None of these things is anything but truths that we have made true by telling ourselves these things. And so, I started off as an incredibly shy person, I couldn't ask your girl on a date, I couldn't ask a girl to dance. And this is how old I am as people asked each other to dance. But , and even in work situations, I couldn't, somebody tried to give me a job as a salesman, I was working in their business, tried to give me

She is broken boundaries, challenge the status quo and will soon be gracing our television screens with her new show Limitless Living with Shannah-speaks-moore on CBS welcome Shavannah.  Shavannah Hello, thank you so much for having me. Marlana  So, I know people look at you and where you are at this stage in the game. And think it must have been easy. You know, there have been no obstacles that you've overcome. But I know that you certainly have. talk to us a little bit about what it took to get to where you are. Shavannah   Oh, boy, where do I even start with that? So, you're right. a lot of the times, you know, on this journey that we travel, a lot of people see your success, and they have no idea what the story is behind that success. So, for me, I guess without going too much into my backstory, I grew up in a little small country town out here in North Carolina, I grew up with my grandmother, I stayed there until I was about 13 years old. And then I came where I am today in North Carolina to live with my mother. So, throughout my childhood, there was a lot of things that I encountered DOM that children should not have encountered. Absolutely no faults, my grandmother, of course, but just things that we encountered growing up as children, you know, such as molestation and living in poverty and things that I really had no idea that was happening at this time, because we made the best of what we had, right? Because I didn't know any better at the time. So, I transitioned, I came here to live with my mother. And it was almost like, that was a turning point for me, because I feel like that's kind of where my life took a turn for the worse, for better lack of words, where I kind of started getting access to the street life, and you know, alcohol and sex, and just all the things that I feel that as teenagers a lot of us experience, but I experienced a lot younger. So, I feel like I grew up quick if that makes sense. So basically, you know, I traveled that journey, my life took a turn for the worst. And at that point, it was like I was either going to end up somewhere good or locked up, or, you know, it would have been a bad journey. For me, I'll say that. So ended up getting into corporate, I got a background in mortgages. So, I started traveling down the corporate journey and things started to really unfold for me.Then I started to see things from a different light, I started to see possibility, I started to really see another side of life that I had never had access to before. So, once I started doing my corporate journey I got into mortgages, I would like to raise the ladder really quick in the mortgage industry. And then back in 2013 is where my...

He's the author of four books about tapping into the power of your personality, including The Chameleon and Personality Wins. Welcome, Merrick. Merrick: Thanks for having me. Marlana: So first of all, tell us what these personality types are. Merrick: Well, there's four core styles, and historically; they've been this alphabet soup of letters. And I wanted to make it easier and simple for people to remember. So I linked the four styles to four birds makes it pretty easy and also very obvious too. If you think about an eagle. Eagles are confident, they're assertive, they're take charge, very direct, they like to be in charge. You've got parrots, parrots are fun. They're social, talkative, outgoing, they bring lots of energy and excitement, doves caring, compassionate, or soft spoken. This is that person in your family. They want everyone to get along. They are harmonious and all like conflict. They're the peacemaker. And then you have the owl who's logical and analytical and detail oriented, if they're going to do something, they have a plan. And they do it right. The first time. They're accurate and very systematic, and they ask lots of questions. So we've got four styles. We're not just one, we're a combination of all four, but they play out in everything we do, from our personal relationships to work wherever we go, Marlana: can we be one, but strive to be another? Or it's pretty much inherent in us, whatever the one is? Merrick: There's often one or two styles that are very strong for us. And, you know, they drive our success, they allow us to be who we are, if you work out of your style, and you want it to be something else, it would be exhausting. If you take something like public speaking, well, parrots tend to like to be in front of a group, they love the energy, they like the fanfare. If you took that parrot and put them out on stage, they're loving it, it feeds their soul. But if you put them in a cubicle eight hours a day, and they have crank data in spreadsheets, and have zero human interaction, they would go home exhausted every day. So if you had a parrot who was trying to be more like an owl, they're just not wired for it, it would drain them, and why not do what feeds you instead of what drains you? So be yourself, trying to be somebody else is just going to exhaust you anyway. Marlana: Which that makes perfect sense. So, tell us, what are the strengths of each one? Like how do we lean into that? Merrick: If you look at the strength of the eagle style,...

Welcome, Andrew. Andrew: Hey, Marlana, thanks so much for having me.  Marlana: So that's really the key, isn't it about building relationships with our audience, because I know if we are entrepreneurs, and we are creating content, it's really marketing at its core. And so in the mix there, we have to come up with ideas and create content that people actually want to consume, and still promote ourselves because we are a business well, in a way without feeling icky. So the question is, I'm going to hit you with it all at once. How do we do it? Is it different things or is it all kind of woven into the same thing? Andrew: For me, it's all woven into the same thing. And perhaps the place to start is in defining what content is, a lot of people think that it's, the first thing that comes to mind would be your social media, or your blog, or maybe even your email list. I also include any paid content, you create courses, coaching, it's really any way that you're communicating with your customer, or your audience or with people who you want to be in your audience, it's going to be the stories that you tell, it's going to be the analogies that you use at any scale, right? If you're doing a social media post, you want to use some kind of analogy or story to teach a lesson, right? But you can still use those same analogies and stories to make a breakthrough in a one on one call with a private client. So everything that you do even down to the color schemes and the graphics and the way that you present your website is content that your audience or your prospective audience is consuming, right? They're going to your website, they're looking at the services, you provide the things that you do, the language that you use, and comparing that to a competitor or to a software solution that claims to solve their problems, right. And so we touched on the idea of creating content that builds relationships. At the end of the day, that's what it comes down to is your prospects, your customers looking at all of these different potential solutions. And they're gonna go with whatever the person who they trust, the most says to do. So if they just came across you, they don't really know anything about you. They've probably been burned in the past, they've made mistakes, they've bought things that aren't what they seem to be, they've gotten ripped off, you know, everybody's gotten ripped off by sleazy online marketer. That's just the reality of the market that we're in today. So what if you build trust with them through your content, and you say, hey, you know, I know you've gone through all these problems, you've had all these issues. Here's what worked for me. I, you know, overcame this, personally, I had all these issues, I figured out how to solve it, and I want to share that with you. If they trust you, they're going to go with your recommendation, even if it's more expensive, even if it's harder, they're gonna go with what you recommend to them, rather than going with something that they don't trust or they don't fully understand. there's really a big there's an immense value in creating trust in your marketing. And I think it's becoming a necessity in the climate that we're in. But I think where people get caught up is content creation is such an interesting aspect of what we do in business. Because if you're...

Welcome, Ben! Ben: Hey! Marlana. Thank you for having me on the show. It is a pleasure talking to you again. Marlana: Well, so let's talk about telling an effective story. Because we all know that we need to tell our story. But how do we make it effective? Where do we even start? Ben: Well, the one thing we need to first understand is, our story's not about us. It's about the people that we affect. And it's about getting people to listen to us to understand the value to them and compelling them to engage or to act or whatever we want them to do. And it's about bringing them into the story, getting them to see it from their first point of view, getting them to understand how that story relates to them. And they can stick a Oh, okay, I haven't done this. But yeah, I've done something similar. And I can see how that relates to this. And all of a sudden, they internalize it, and when they internalize it, they can recall it. And they can retell it in their own words. And that's when the story becomes powerful. But when all we do is make it, I did this, and I did that, and I did the everything. Nobody cares. It's like, Yoh! I woke up, I made a million dollars, and I retired. Who cares? Tell me the story that went along with it. And tell me the lessons you learned and make it relevant to me. And I'm going to care about it. Marlana: So then, what are some good starting points for us? Ben: I think the first thing you do is understand who your audience is, because your story is your story. I mean, let's look at a corporate story. You know, your brand marketing started 15 years ago, we started for specific reason, you know, we had specific challenges, we had an idea, we had customers, it evolved, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And here we are today. And you know, we can get into that story. But that's what's relevant. I'm going to tell the story differently to you, as I'm going to tell it differently to a CEO, as I'm going to tell it to an operations manager, a technology officer, whoever, because they care about different things. And we need to make it relevant to the person and sit there say, okay, what are the analogies that I'm going to use that are relevant to this audience that that's in front of me, you know, how am I going to make this to a point where they're sitting up and go, Oh, I get that. And telling that story differently to different people, is what makes it relevant. The theme is the same, the lessons are the same. But you know, sometimes you can make it shorter, sometimes you can make it longer. Sometimes you can have more detail, sometimes less. Sometimes you're going to use, you know, this analogy instead of that. But you know, the goal is to sit there and say, Okay, who is this person? What do they care about?...

Welcome, Monique. Monique: Thank you for having me, Marlana. I'm excited to be on the show.  Marlana: here's the thing, we can have the best message, we can believe in what we're doing. But if we cannot communicate that clearly, we're in trouble. So, talk to us about how do we do that? Monique: Well, I think the first thing we have to think about is considering all aspects of ourselves. I think the time where people where we get frustrated, or we feel limited or boxton is when we think that we have to narrow everything down into one nice squishy little message. And then we feel like relieving so much out of who we are so much out of our brand. And then that triggers the feeling of inauthenticity, like that's not just really who I am, I'm so much more. And so, the first thing is to think about or take the mindset and the framing that you are multi passionate, you are multi skilled. But when we think about communicating our message, we want to step into the mind of the audience that we're trying to reach. And we don't want to confuse them, we want to give them something that is almost like a window. You know, think about it, when people would go door to door with their sales messages and strategies you give them just enough KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK for them to say okay, come on in. And then let's have a conversation. And then you get to see more about what the services what they offer, you may learn something that you wouldn't have known if they were just at the front door saying Well, I do this, this, this, this and so many things and you confuse them and you lose them. So, first thing is to kind of think about that mindset of a not boiling everything down because it's not who I am, I'm trying to be very clear, I'm trying to be very specific, and connect with my audience in the fastest way possible. Then once you embrace that mindset, it really opens. You have to think about if I only had two minutes, what would be the one thing they absolutely...

He's leveraged his mastery in PR and personal branding to start an agency called ace of spades, which helps people grow their personal brand so they can become number one in their space. Welcome, Jay. Jay: Thank you. Welcome. Thank you. I'm excited Monday morning here in Miami. What a great way to stop the day, you know, some people, some energy, enthusiasm, some excitement, and some moves today, you know, Marlana: love it. Well, you know, as a personal brand photographer, this topic is near and dear to my heart because I have my own ideas about why we have to create a personal brand. But tell me, why do you say that we need a personal brand? Jay: Listen, people are buying your product, they're buying you. Period. Look at who you work with. Look, you know, I used to be a magician, right? That was my backstory for 15 years, I was a magician. And I worked with many photographers at weddings. I used to do magic shows at weddings. And for some relatability to like, I always would ask the photographer like why did they choose you? Right? There's a lot of photographers, how many photographers, you know, from the 18-year-old to the whole team, the big production team that comes in with the bells and whistles. And most of the time, it wasn't the best photo. It was they really connected with me. They liked me. They listened to me, and they trusted me. And isn't that crazy? You know, you don't need to be the best. You don't need to have the best landing page or the best website. But if people can know you, and then they can like you and trust you then like that they will choose you period. Marlana:  And you know, I always tell people, if you are online in any way, shape, or form, you have a personal brand, either by design or by default. So, in my opinion, it should be by design. And what are your thoughts on that? Jay: Yeah, you know, but I think the issue with that is a lot of people feel like that they don't have a message. And they don't have a story. Right? Well, I'm not like her, and I'm not like Jay. That's Jay, that's his personality, I don't want to be that person. And in in the space that I play running this agency specializing in personal branding, we find that so many people have this black and white evening Yang, like hot and cold way to look at a personal brand, right? Gone are the days where it was only for people like who were on television or gone are the days actors and celebrities or that one guy that's like selling rugs, rugs a million guys buy these rugs come on down, there's always that one guy in the city, it's like, oh, that's just as Jim, let Jim be Jim. Now, with the internet, now with how everyone is connected through this machine in front of me, this $1,500 iPhone. And now with what's going on in the world, people want to connect, people want to know, they have more options, and they want to get to know more people. So, it's like, this is the time where you can literally step into your superpower and go you know what, I have something to tell the world. You know what, and I deserve to have a part of it. And the money, the movement, and the people as well. Marlana: So, what are some of the mistakes or...

Welcome Frederic. Frederic: How are you, Marlana? Good to see you. Marlana: You too. So first of all, explain that phrase to us breaking orbit, what does that mean? Frederic: Well, when I came up with the idea for the book, I started thinking about how we have this idea of success, almost a visual in our heads that the higher you go, the more successful you are. But then there is. So, if you think about it a plane, then we think about in terms of you take off, and now you're flying high, right? But often what happens is that we didn't get stuck in this orbit, right? Because that's really what flying is it's orbiting the Earth at a certain altitude. But when we realize that we are really built created for so much more than just going around in circles, even at a high level, we kind of misunderstand what it is that we're created to do. There's a phrase in the book that I coined, it says that rockets belong among stars, which means that rockets are meant to go up and out and to explore the deepest reaches of the galaxy, not to orbit around the planet. Even though you're a PI, a lot of people can look at you and say, Oh, they're really doing really well. But if you notice that a lot of people, especially when you're dealing with celebrities, or people that are really well known maybe for wealthy, there's this belief, there's this sense that you get that once you have reached this peak, that's all there is. And there's a kind of emptiness and loneliness that comes with that. But when you realize that you're actually capable of so much more. And that trajectory is not meant to be up and around, but up and out. Always exploring, always creating more, always seeking what is deeper. Because that's what we are created to do, then it helps us understand that what we're really meant to do, what I want to help people do with this book is to break that orbit, right? So not just go up and around, but up and out. Marlana: So how do we determine if we are basically on autopilot and just orbiting or if we are going in the trajectory that we should? Frederick: Well, there's a sense that a lot of us are having. We're always chasing meaning, versus creating it. And, you know, you're in a creative space as well. But even the midst, even the idea of a creative space is a misnomer that some people are creatives, and some are not. If you are not in a place where you are always creating that fulfilment, creating that meaning through new things to new endeavors through to the everyday inner interactions and the impact you're designed to create. And that's the impact, is the ultimate way that we measure how we are moving throughout the world. I think you know, it's a word that gets thrown around a lot. And I think what people really mean is that things don't feel meaningful or significant to them. They don't...

Welcome, Christine! Christine: Thank you, Marlana. Marlana: So, here's the thing, a lot of people think TV production, movies, all that kind of stuff, it's got to be a glamorous world, is it? Are you going to burst our bubble? Christine: I'm going to burst your bubble, it's glamorous that you get to travel. But unfortunately, my travel kind of was hotel, arena, airport. There were occasionally, we got to go in early, I would go into like San Francisco early so I can visit my friend Allison, and my brother lives there at the time. So, there were like some perks to it, but two productions very hard, very long hours. We're talking 12 to 15 hour days, and you know, you're crawling around on the floor. Well, in my case, if you're at an arena, like you're crawling around trying to find places to shoot. So, it's definitely not glamorous, I can kind of sum it up the way my mom used to say to me, why don't you ever buy nice clothes? Because I crawl around on the floor and get dirty while I'm not. So, I'm not getting nice clothes.  Marlana: When you first started out, what about the industry surprised you? And were there stuff that you weren't really prepared for? C-Roc has a fierce desire to compel people to see the greatness inside themselves using past life events to fuel their fire. Welcome C-Roc! C-Roc: Hey! Marlana. Thanks for having me. I always start every interview with gratitude. Because it means the world to me, first of all, that people want to have me on the show and also to your audience. Thank you for showing up and listening or watching. Marlana: Well! I think what you're going to share is going to be very valuable. So, in the way I look at it is I think there's two parts to this because I think part of it is bouncing back from setbacks and disappointments, and the other part of it is using it as fuel. So, talk to us first a little bit about the first half of it. How do we bounce back? C-Roc: Well, first of all, I don't like bouncing back - I like bouncing through. So, I don't want to go through something negative, setbacks, discouragement, my own screw ups unless I'm going to be better off than where I was when I started. And so, like the word resilience, is not even powerful enough for me because I don't want to go back. The definition of resilience is to come back, I don't want to come back, I want to go through further. So, everything pretty much that I do Marlana is thinking about going beyond what most people would talk about, because most people talk about what makes them comfortable. And they don't want to get out of this zone where they feel safe. I want to be dangerous. And with the things that I'm trying to do not run out in front of a bus dangerous, but you know, thinking big to get out of the comfort zone type thing. So that's, you know, as far as doing that, I think it's a proactive approach, understanding that when you know, something like you're going for something or even just living your life, that you're going to run into things that aren't going to go the way you expect them to. And let's face it, that's really what a setback is, it's not really a bad thing. It's just something that happens that you're not expecting to happen. So, if you start to expect those things, and realize those things are to kind of guide you, maybe make you switch course, slow down, speed up. Then once you realize that proactively when they come, it's not that feeling in your chest, like, oh, I can't believe this happen. You're expecting these things that happen at some point and understanding that they are for you, not against you. Marlana: When you go after things, when you make goals, do you look at the goal and then think okay, how can I push this farther? C-Roc: Yeah, I mean, one of the things that I do is I do set a goal. And I think Is it big enough, because you know what people don't realize in life...

Thanks for having me.  Marlana: So today we're going to talk about getting out of your own way. Because I think that's a problem that most of us have at some point or another, sometimes multiple times. Why do you think we do that to ourselves?  Lisa: I think a big part of it is that we just overthink everything. And not just entrepreneurs, but everybody. You know, if you think about it, you can usually give other people better advice than they can give themselves. And then at the same time, you're screwing up your own life, or you're making poor decisions. I just think that we're so close to our own problems, that we can't see the forest for the trees.  Marlana: Do you think that it's even possible for us to recognize that we're putting these roadblocks up for ourselves or not?  Lisa: I'm sure that some people do. And I know that I do. But even when I know I'm doing it, a lot of times, I still am totally lost in what I should be doing. Because once again, it's just like, we're just so close to it. You know how like a painting, if you stand really close, and you only see a small part, you're not seeing the whole thing, and then you back up and you see the entire vision. And you're like, “oh!” I really think that's what it is. Last weekend at Brandon Straza, (his three C coaching event), we talked about this topic a lot. And every single person there has the problem. I mean, I've been an entrepreneur for 31 years, and I've owned my current business for 26. And there are other people there had been in business for decades. We're all the same. So, if anybody out there is feeling like a weirdo or loser, don't, you're just normal.  Marlana: Is it better for us to have somebody kind of, give  us that bird's eye view, so to speak?  Lisa: Yeah, I think one of the biggest mistakes that I made in my own entrepreneurial career is not having a coach earlier. I kind of always looked at a coach as rah rah, you know, you can do this. And I'm like, I understand business. And I don't need any...

This should not be misconstrued as legal advice, for that, please speak directly to an attorney. www.marlanasemenza.com On this episode, we talk about your photos and the law. What can you do with them? Who owns them? And more! Ani-Agrawal Marlana: Ani Agrawal is an intellectual property attorney with a background in patent prosecution, patent litigation, and related IP advising. His current practice focuses on patent and trademark prosecution before United States patent trademark office and in foreign countries. Welcome, Ani! Ani: Hi, Marlana! Marlana: I am really excited to have this conversation with you because nobody talks about the legal aspect of using images and the ramifications of over stepping and crossing over the line. While this conversation is going to be based on the law and what things are from the legal standpoint, we do have to let people know that they should not be construed as legal advice, for that they will need to speak to a legal attorney. Ani: Yeah! That's right. Marlana: So, let's start with the very basics. I see an image online, whether be on Facebook or wherever and I decide “you know what! I really like this image and I want to use it.” So, I take a screenshot and I use it. Legal or illegal? Ani: You should always presume that that is illegal. Copyright is really established as soon as an image or a song, anything is created. There is a copyright associated with that image and that is true whether they federally registered them or they've simply published it on their website. The creator has copyrights in that media they have created and that extends to them whether they have federally registered them or not. So, anytime you see an image you should always operate under the assumption that there is copyright associated with it. Marlana: So, even if it's something that's non descriptive like flowers or a sunset, I should make that assumption? Ani: Absolutely! So, the subject matter is not important in this case. It can be a person, it can be a sunset, an animal, an ornament. It makes no difference. The photographer or the creator of the image has rights in that and that's true regardless of the subject. Marlana: What about photos of me? If a photographer sends me proofs or I see my images being used on the photographer's website or in a social media, can I take a screenshot and use them myself? Ani: Actually you cannot! That is a common point of confusion. People think; “well! The photo is of me, obviously I will have full rights. It is the same image I see on the mirror every morning, so there should be no restrictions, it's my face, it's my property.” That is not the case. What happens is, when a photographer takes a photo of you, they own a copyright in that photo. So, absent some sort of work for hire agreement where ownership is transferred to the subject of the photo, absent any agreement like that, the copyright is presumed to be held by the photographer. You have...

Today's guest helps small business owners create a new level of influence to help land their dream opportunities. This week, we're chatting with Marlana Semenza,  international photographer and visual strategist. She's worked with athletes, celebrities, WWE Superstars, and public figures including Miss North Carolina. She's going to break down just how we can teach people how to view us.    It's important to realize when you're creating a brand and producing images, it isn't just a pretty picture--it's a conversation. You have to understand who you're speaking to and what you're telling them. It should show them “why you.” What you would be like to be around, be friends with, work with. It's for you to use to communicate that. Your brand is your business. When people come to work with you, they are coming to you, not your business. You carry that influence with you everywhere you go.    When a business is ready to build a brand and start making connections, it's crucial that you're clear about who you're speaking to. Speak to the “one”--your ideal client. The conversations you have with different people will have different needs, priorities, and goals. Make sure you're communicating effectively what it is you do and who you serve.    You have to show up on purpose. That means have a strategy and intention for what you're creating. Don't just post to post--speak to who you're speaking to and connect with purpose.    Identify what makes you unique! Consider how you tell your story--you're more than a photo of you at a computer. What makes you ‘you?' These images play a huge role in creating your entire brand. By deciding what you want to represent and show up you teach people who to think of you. Steer the conversation.   Marlana's process starts with an extensive questionnaire that gives her an idea of who you are, what you're about, and what your social media circumstances are now. From there, a conversation is had that goes beyond the surface-level information the questionnaire offers. That is the jumping-off point. From there, of course, there are in-person photos happen, but also FaceTime photos allow Marlana to take high-quality photos of anybody, anywhere. All with the same process. Expect instead of Marlana Semenza taking the photo, she coaches her clients in positioning, lighting, location, and posing. All that adjustment happens via FaceTime. Key Takeaways   It isn't just a pretty picture--it's a conversation. Get clear on who you're speaking to and communicate why ‘you.' You carry your influence everywhere you go. Make sure you're showing up with intention to every client.    LINKS   Social media channels: https://www.instagram.com/marlana.semenza.photo/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/marlanasemenza/ https://www.facebook.com/Marlana-Semenza-Photography-129332310573483 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3wRcnYROOe3qO4b-_KK3kQ   Website: www.marlanasemenza.com

Entrepreneur Mindset-Reset with Tracy Cherpeski

This is episode #6 of Entrepreneur Mindset-Reset. Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning-in today for a new episode of Entrepreneur Mindset-Reset, THE podcast where entrepreneurs just like you and me share how they master their mindset to overcome obstacles to their success. In today's episode, I'm speaking with the extremely talented international photographer and visual strategist, Marlana Semenza. She uses her photography to tell her clients' stories in their most powerful way.  In our interview, she talks about the difference between marketing and branding, and I love her analogy about the difference between the two. She says marketing is like asking someone on a date, and branding is the reason they say yes. Your personal brand ultimately isn't about you; it's about what you can do for people. It's always about your clients and customers.  You won't want to miss the story about how she took photos of a client on a motorcycle in California while sitting in her home office in North Carolina! You'd never, ever guess that she took these photos virtually on a FaceTime call! You've got to check out these very cool images at PhotographerInYourPocket.com  So, grab a beverage or a snack and settle-in to listen to Marlana and her amazing journey. Not every artist considers their practice a small business, but the government does. Many creatives use this fact to their advantage by using business structures to grow and/or fund their practice. An artist will find several benefits as an independant, for-profit small business, and a non-profit provides another model of funding & structure that’s more commonly recognized by artists. Welcome back to the Instant Impact podcast with your host, Elyse Archer. Today we’re talking about an often overlooked or underestimated personal branding tool: photography. Elyse sits down with her personal brand photographer, Marlana Semenza. She has more than 20 years of experience in the space, and she is going to give us the 101 on personal branding photography.    A personal brand photographer creates visual assets that tell your story. Everyone, if they have an online presence, has the beginnings of a personal brand. Whether or not it’s being utilized is a different story. It’s about framing your personal brand with your reputation. Through telling stories, we can truly portray who we are and what we want people to about us, and avoid stock images.    Elyse and Marlana discuss showing the journey versus showing the destination. People love to know what people go through. By taking your audience along with you, it enriches the story you’re giving them.    They touch on topics such as how to identify the right time to get a photographer and move away from an iPhone, posing tips, and how to overcome feeling awkward in front of the camera, and how to find your aesthetic. With a personal brand photographer, you can show an authentic you.    Links Schedule a call and find a photographer! marlanasemenza.com @Marlana.semenza.photo Marlana Semenza on LinkedIn Request a free Brand Strategy Call: http://thebrandbuildersgroup.com/callelyse
