A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.comThis episode is dedicated to the memory to Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, William Kinney, Katherine Koonce, Mike Hill and Cynthia Peak who lost their lives in the Covenant School shooting in Nashville. On March 27, 2023, a mass shooting occurred at The Covenant School in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville. 28-year-old Aiden Hale (born Audrey Elizabeth Hale), a transgender man and former student of the school, killed three nine‑year‑old children and three adults before being shot and killed by two Metropolitan Nashville Police Department officers. It is the deadliest mass shooting in Tennessee history.Brink Fidler owns Defend Systems. His company trains large and small corporations, churches, schools and high profile figures for active violence empowerment and blood loss control. Brink and I met when he hired me to produce a podcast he had at the time called, “Tips, Tactics and Tools”. We've been quite good friends ever since. A year prior to the Covenant event, Brink and his team performed their training at the Covenant School with their staff. We were invited to have a booth at the Music City Drum Show and talk to several drummers, entrepreneurs and manufacturers about the various facets of the music business. He shares his background in drumming, from his early days in New Orleans to his various roles in different cities, including LA and Atlanta. We were invited to have a booth at the Music City Drum Show and talk to several drummers, entrepreneurs and manufacturers about the various facets of the music business. In this special episode, I sat down with Jason Reyes, owner of Kings Customer Drums at the Music City Drum Show.Jason's father was a drum collector for years and years. As a child, Jason was always playing on amazing drums. He claims that he was the “weirdo” that took everything apart and wanted to see how things worked. This is where his fascination for drums began.About 2 years ago, he had the idea to appeal to a niche market that is custom drums with unique tonewoods. With the support of his wife, he jumped into it! Funding it with his collection, of course. He began by selling a lot of his own snares, and over the past year has sold 130 snares!Jason talks about the educational aspect of his business, teaching drummers about the nuances of different wood types and their unique sounds. Jason suffers from chronic illness and appreciates the flexibility of owning his own business that he can work on his own schedule. Now empty nesters, Jason and his wife want to explore what doing custom drums full time is like, when his health allows. The name Kings Custom Drums comes from Jason's last name, Reyes. Reyes means Kings in Spanish, but he found most people cannot pronounce Reyes so he went with Kings. A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.comDave and I had lunch a few weeks ago to discuss this episode and how it would work. He's a guy with whom I have always been acquainted, but never really talked to, until that lunch. If there's anyone who knows the longevity it takes to build up business expertise and acumen, it's Dave. After cutting his teeth and making a huge mark in the Wisconsin construction industry for most of his life, he decided to move to Tennessee to own and operate a Culver's restaurant in Franklin. A restaurant with roots…..in Wisconsin! With over 35 years in construction our founder, Dave Craker, knows the challenge of balancing your square foot requirements, the look/feel you need, and your budget. Dave launched Premier Design Build in 2016 with the goal of solving that challenge for small to mid-sized organizations in Middle Tennessee. Our primary focus is on commercial projects ranging from $750k to $10mm. We work with both individual sites like Churches, Schools and Retail sites, as well as land development projects like our Spring Hill location.Highlights:Construction challenges in Wisconsin, including winter conditions and safety measures. A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.comThe Mostly Middle Tennessee Business Podcast went remote in a *very* mostly way. We were invited to have a booth at the Music City Drum Show and talk to several drummers, entrepreneurs and manufacturers about the various facets of the music business. In this episode, I sat down with April Samuels with Breast Cancer can STICK It, and she's a musical entrepreneur of the highest degree!April picked up her first pair of sticks at age five at Nadine's Music Manor and was enthralled in private drum lessons at the same store by the age of 11 studying under former Bo Diddley/Ice Capades/Fifth Dimension drummer Warren White. April navigated her teens by playing in garage bands with her guitarist brother, Todd. Later, she expanded her study when she majored in music at the University of North Texas. As she developed her musical style, April co-wrote several songs used in episodes on the show "Outward Bound" on the Discovery Channel. April has since performed, recorded and/or written with 30+ different groups including an album with Matthew Johnson (formerly of Great White), two groups with David Harbour (formerly of Michael Harris, David T. Chastain, King Diamond), two groups with Dave Hineman (formerly of Solinger) and a group with Joey C. Jones.Since 2012 (aside from a year hiatus from April 2021-June 2022) Samuels has performed up to 120 shows a year across Texas and Louisiana with the 80s spoof-hair-band Metal Shop under the pseudonym "Crash Gordon" . Highlights during her tenure included headlining multiple times at the House of Blues locations in Dallas, Houston and New Orleans, as well as playing for over 15,000 attendees at a San Antonio Spurs watching game at AT&T Center.April's musical interests don't stop there. She ran a booking agency, 100 Proof Entertainment from 1989-2010, where she booked over 50 different regional bands - handling as many bands as 13 at one time. Because of this interest, she attended several seminars, exhibits, and music industry functions through the Dallas Songwriters Association, Austin Songwriters Group, South by Southwest the Sony R&B Workshop, and NAMM to name a few.April has also worked for Planet Dallas Studios (Dallas, TX) in the Publishing Department, worked as a salesperson for Texas Beat Magazine (Austin, TX), and was the assistant booking agent for the former club, The Basement (Dallas, TX).Currently, Samuels plays full-time with Metal Shop as well as Rebel Yell - The Tribute to Billy Idol, is the touring drummer for Just Like P!nk - The P!NK Experience, plays with two original bands (49th Vibration and her recently revived band BULLITT originally established in 2006), as well as playing fundraisers with her cover band, The Breast Cancer Can Stick It! Band. April was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of breast cancer in 2010 and immediately combined her passion for drums with her personal fight against cancer by founding her nonprofit organization Breast Cancer Can Stick It! Foundation, Inc.. April has been cancer-free since her mastectomy in November of 2010. Through performing shows, collaborating with celebrities for fundraisers, guest appearances and speaking events, April rocks year round both behind and in front of the drums.Follow April:https://www.aprilsamuels.com/https://www.breastcancercanstic
A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.comWe meet and work for a lot of managers who show you how to do things wrong. They're typically more self-centered and believe their team is in place to “make them look good”. (That was actually said to us in a staff meeting one time by a brand new manager.) Then there are those managers who show you how to do things the right way. They're the ones who embody what I call #BeThemCentric. They believe it *isn't* about them. It's about the team and providing what the team needs to do their jobs and accomplish their goals for the business. I met Steve Brink while I was working in the Nashville radio industry. To say that he was a huge catalyst for some major changes in my life is a MASSIVE understatement. I credit him for bringing me into the car business in 2013, which profoundly changed my life. He was the General Manager of Crest Honda in Nashville at the time. Steve and his superior, Brian Palmer, who was the General Manager of Crest Cadillac and the Market Manager of Sonic Automotive Nashville, really built teams in both stores that fostered one of the best and healthy cultures I had ever seen. And that says something for the car business where healthy culture building seems to always come last. When my other colleagues in the business heard that I was having Steve on the show, the outpouring of eagerness to reconnect with him was amazing. Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.comI met Ray Jeter a few months ago at a Maury County Commission meeting. I was impressed with his earnest desire to make sure Maury County, which has been experiencing unprecedented growth along with most of Middle Tennessee, to maintain its rural roots and charm mixed with suburban enterprise. To say that Ray Jeter's roots are firmly planted in Maury County is quite an understatement. When Ray was three years old, his family relocated their concrete business to middle Tennessee, laying the foundation for his future endeavors in Maury County. He met his future wife-to-be in Kindergarten! His formative years were spent in the humble surroundings of the Maury County trailer park, American Mobile Village. It was here that he first encountered the life-altering power of faith, guided by Pastor John Rushing.Later, at a local church, he rekindled his connection with God and reunited with Courtney, his kindergarten sweetheart, forging a bond that would withstand the tests of time.Ray enrolled in Bible College immediately after graduation. After just three semesters in Bible College, Ray proposed to Courtney, and they were married on March 16, 2002.In 2009, Ray joined the Maury County Sheriff's Department as a reserve deputy, later earning a full-time appointment as a patrol deputy in 2011. In August 2014, he was elevated to the position of Chief Deputy Sheriff.Fueled to effect positive change in his community, Ray campaigned for and won the Maury County Commission seat in 2022. A Middle Tennessee Business Podcast....subscribe/follow/rate/review at www.mmtbp.com...I love to talk with my old comrades and peers who are left or have moved on from the radio business. It may seem that I throw shade on the industry from time to time. I assure you, it's not towards the folks who are still showing up to serve the public as the medium was intended, hanging around as long as their industry still finds them to be valuable. To those who remain and those who have recently been jettisoned: You still have massive value even if your industry cannot see it anymore. Radio has been cannibalizing itself since the late 90s and it's a sinking (if not, already sunken) ship. There are a TON of new media, content creation and digital branding industries that need your kind of off-the-wall thinking.Which is why I reached out to Doug Griffin for this episode. Born in the Bay Area in California, Doug Griffin fell in love with old-time radio theater and comedy shows on local radio stations. Naturally, this fired up a desire within Doug to make a career in radio. As a foreign exchange student in Germany, Doug fashioned a home stereo system to record audio messages for friends on cassette tapes which, to him, was his first radio station known as "KDUG."Doug got his semi-professional radio start via college, eventually going pro with a job doing traffic reports.Like most radio people, Doug bounced around several California radio stations before landing a job as morning show co-host for Nashville's WAY-FM 1998. In 2002, Doug found himself “on the beach” (a radio way of saying that you're between jobs), but a short while later, he landed at new Christian station 94FM The Fish, where he has worked up until April of 2024. Now he's on the beach and has a TON to offer. Highpoints:Radio industry, personal experiences, and virtual currency. (8:25)Radio broadcasting techniques and experiences from the 1970s to 2000s. (11:58)Car sales and marketing strategies. (17:10)Personal branding, podcasting, and sales strategies. (32:05)Overcoming fear and pursuing new opportunities. I have known Ryan Reid since 2016. He owns ICU Security which provides camera security systems around Middle Tennessee and way beyond! He has built his business on making long term and truly authentic human connections through various networking endeavors, but mainly through our BNI chapter. He's quite possibly the longest standing member of any BNI chapter in the region, being with The Williamson County BNI (Wilco) Chapter since 2001.Our conversation revolved around various business-related topics, including networking, sales strategies, and security. Ryan shares his experiences and insights on how to effectively network within the BNI ecosystem, pass referrals, and continuously educate himself. We also discussed the challenges of starting and maintaining a security business, including employee management and client retention. We touched on the importance of positive thinking and energy in shaping interactions with others, and the limitations of security camera systems in providing foolproof security.Highlights:Starting and growing a security business with ups and downs. (4:43)Business ownership, employee loyalty, and commission-based sales. (16:28)Working on business vs. in it, with a focus on surveillance technology to help businesses improve. (21:16)Using technology to improve business operations and retain clients.
