Even with a reduced number of growers in the state, the hemp crop in Wisconsin this year looks pretty good.  Farm director, Pam Jahnke was able to talk with Brian Kuhn who deals with the hemp program at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.  He shares information about this year's hemp crop and about the licensing transition for the 2022 growing season. A healthy rumen is essential to the efficiency and milk production of a dairy cow.  Rumen microbes in that environment help to make everything work.  Lisa Mortz, microbiome scientist at Native Microbials shares what research is being done to help replenish the microbe population through a cow's diet and why this is so important.  Freeze drying has been a very effective process to preserve and utilize these microbes. Wisconsin had a very strong showing at the recent World Forage Analysis Superbowl at the World Dairy Expo, however reports seem quite mixed across the state of Wisconsin when talking about forage quality and supply.  Dan Undersander, UW-Extension forage specialist, says the United States overall looks like it will be short on supply due to dry weather across much of the map.  He is encouraging Wisconsin farmers to consider marketing any extra forage they may have, and if possible take one more late cutting closer to November to increase supply.
