Listen in as Phil Zito describes the journey he has taken from being bored, to blogging to building a business that provides top notch online training and workforce development programs. Formerly known as Building Automation Monthly, a newsletter and podcast in its early years, The Smart Buildings Academy has experienced rapid growth. As the SBA says on their website: “If you've been looking for a way to take yourself or your building automation team to the next level. Then you're in the right place. One of SBA's guiding principles is to “Focus on the customer's profit”. Phil understands from personal experience the importance of focusing on training that not only develops BAS knowledge but also teaches how to “do” building automation in a way that is profitable and efficient. If you are a BAS professional looking to grow your skills or looking to enter the BAS field, you owe it to yourself to check out the SBA. Phil's LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phillipzito/ Smart Buildings Academy: website: https://www.smartbuildingsacademy.com/ Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/buildingautomationmonthly LinkedIn group: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/3582469/ Oh, Phil also interviewed ME on his podcast recently:https://podcast.smartbuildingsacademy.com/387 This episode was recorded in December 2022.
In our second episode of the Building Technology Podcast, we talk with Phil Zito from Building Automation Monthly which has now become Smart Buildings Academy, to discuss what building operators should know about their building automation system and where to start. Not intentionally started as a training resource, Phil's desire to get information out there to help others train and become knowledgeable within the building automation industry, led to huge demand and ultimately a change in direction so he could cater for and offer the training courses people needed.
This week I talk with Phil Zito, Founder and CEO of Building Automation Monthly about equipment integration and best practices for engineers regarding controls. There is a lot of good stuff in the episode so I encourage you to share it, show notes as always can be found at www.hvac360.com/117 . Enjoy. Building Automation Monthly just celebrated its first year in business. In this episode, I look back at the lessons I've learned in building the world's first ever online Building Automation training company. I discuss what went well, what could go better, and tips that you can use to help grow your career and or business!
We reached out to over a dozen facility owners of small and large facilities. The reason for doing this was to understand how they use their BAS and more importantly why they don't use it. After doing this we found two interesting results. And in this episode of the Building Automation Monthly podcast we will talk through those results and how to integrate a building automation system into a facility process. Creating your triage process The biggest barriers that keep facilities owners from understanding BAS (1:51) The hidden danger of learning through "tribal knowledge" (4:07) Three common facility triage processes (5:14) How to tie a BAS into the facility process (8:02) What is the main goal of a facility? (10:02) How to collect data on what is happening in a facility (11:05) The importance of selecting your data source (12:02) Four key questions your data should answer (14:49) Three methods for gathering data for your triage process (18:22) Why you must get to the core issue as fast as possible (22:08) Use the right tool to identify the right issue (25:42) Key questions you must be able to answer in order to optimize a facility team (29:21)
Do you work with VAV boxes? Have you ever wondered why you can't maintain a space's temperature setpoint even when all the "controls" seem to be working? If so this episode is for you. In episode 110 of the Building Automation Monthly podcast, we discuss how to effectively control a space. This episode takes a deep dive into the topic of space control and covers: How air changes work Strategies for preventing supply fan failures on startup The importance of understanding standards How ventilation works and the importance of min and max flow settings And much, MUCH more
Goals! It's that time of the year again. The time when millions of people around the world are creating goals to change their businesses and their lives. Here at Building Automation Monthly we also have goals. And in this episode I am going to take you through the exciting things that we have planned for 2018. I'm also going to do something I've never done before. I'm going to share some very personal information about an issue that I struggle with that is affecting my personal and business life.

As the smart building controls world explodes, and systems become more robust, they consume and need a new type of fuel, DATA! But how do you make this data usable? It is kind of like the problem the United Nations had when they designed the UN. You have all these different participants coming together to work, but they all speak different languages. Nothing gets done until they can understand each other. Without some sort of translator nothing happens. Sign up for Memoori’s Making Internet of Things Device Data Just Work! A Q&A Webinar with Project Haystack. Belimo Releases the new 6-way Electronic Pressure Independent Valve (ePIV) with Near Field Communication (NFC). Now available! Belimo‘s non-spring return 6-way electronic pressure independent valve (ePIV) assemblies with Near Field Communication (NFC) and an ultrasonic flow meter. How to troubleshoot BACnet networks Learn How to Use Visual BACnet to Troubleshoot a Smart Buildings Controls Network. Ken and I had a chance to check out Bueno Systems and the cool BACnet troubleshooting tools from Optigo at Haystack Connect. If you work with building automation controls networks that use BACnet, this free webinar is worth checking out. From Monica at Optigo Networks: To improve energy analytics, you need a deep understanding of your building network. When Australian energy analytics company BUENO Systems used to start working with a new building, they would have no idea what was happening on the building’s network. Now, with Visual BACnet, they can assess the health of a customer’s network and ensure it is working in prime condition, well before adding their analytics. As Ken reminds us, “We need to focus instead on our only assets, our people who have all been through several technology shifts in their life. They have seen hardware evaporate into software and become data in the IoT cloud or processes acted on at the edge.” 2016 ControlTrends Highlights: Coverage of the Siemens CPS October Business National Sales Meeting in Chicago.
