Show Title: “One-offs Matter” with Jen Manly Power Quote: “One-offs matter.”  Description:Do you remember being a teacher? Or maybe you are an aspiring AP and you are still in the classroom. Either way, I want you to think about the relationship between the evaluation process, professional development days, and teacher growth. It seems like these are three related things, but in much of my experience as a teacher and administrator, evaluation, PD, and teacher growth were disconnected from each other. They were three distinct things, not three parts of the same thing. What was it – or is – like for you? Today, my wonderful guest and I are going to play with this idea. Guest Bio:Jen Manley believes that kids deserve to do BIG, meaningful work and that all students are worthy of learning that is fun, challenging, and fulfilling. She is passionate about helping teachers maximize their planning time to make time for what is most important while still providing an incredible learning experience for every student. She is a current college instructor, former high school and middle school computer science teacher, middle and high school curriculum developer, and speaker.  Warmup questions:·      We always like to start with a celebration. What are you celebrating today?·      Is there a story that will help listeners understand why you are doing what you do?  Questions/Topics/PromptsJen - my big thing is pushing admin to focus their work around supporting and growing teachers. Support = aligning systems to make it easier for teachers to focus on teachingGrowth = helping develop skills, knowledge, dispositions, and healthTeacher development should be teacher driven. 90% of the time admin should be supporting teachers in areas the teacher identified.I would love to dig into these ideas with you because I think you could offer such valuable perspectives. I am fine with being challenged if you have different view, I think that would make for rich conversation and I trust you. ·        Closing questions:·      What part of your own leadership are you still trying to get better at?·      If listeners could take just one thing away from today's podcast, what would it be?·      Before we go, is there anything else that you'd like to share with our listeners?·      Where can people learn more about you and your work… Remember the four takeaways:·      If we want to help teachers grow, we need to take things off their plates to create space for growth.·      We may be handcuffed by law and policy requirements, but we hold the keys to use these requirements in ways that serve our and our teachers' best interest.·      PD needs to include support for fidelity of implementation – if we don't commit to fidelity the PD is wasted time.·      Asking reflective questions to teachers and listening to them is providing high quality PD. Sponsorship:I want to thank IXL for sponsoring this podcast… Everyone talks about the power of data-driven instruction. But what does that actually look like? Look no further than IXL, the ultimate online learning and teaching platform for K to 12. IXL gives you meaningful insights that drive real progress, and research can prove it. Studies across 45 states show that schools who use IXL outperform other schools on state tests. It can definitely contribute to your child's symptoms…Having a bowel movement, that's the body's way of removing toxins, so if we're not pooping, those toxins are building up in the body.” ”The gut-brain connection is so incredibly huge.” ”If constipation is building up and you have a breakdown in the gut, that is driving inflammation in the body..which in turn can drive those ADHD symptoms.” ”When dysregulation is happening constantly and it's becoming more frequent…that's when we need to really start asking questions.” ”Remember, your child is not giving you a hard time. They're having a hard time.” ”If you are feeling like, ‘How are we going to go another day like this? This is not sustainable,' then it's time to put your investigative hat on and start doing something different.” ”If your child has bad breath, we need to figure out what's going on in the body that  is driving that because that too is not normal.” “The healing starts with us…with the parents.” ”Our kids deserve to feel better, and if they're eating that way, they probably have symptoms that are coming from that…Their body is telling you that you need to do something, so let's just start taking those baby steps.”   Dana Kay Resources:

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 283: Teach Yoga Without Demos with Francesca Cervero   Description: Do you demonstrate yoga asanas when you teach? Do you wish you could do fewer demos in a class but don't know how? How can we start doing that in our classes? Francesca Cervero explains how she teaches yoga without demos and how other yoga teachers can too.   Francesca Cervero has been teaching yoga full-time since 2005. Inspired by her foundational training at OM Yoga Center, the years she spent as a dancer, and subsequently in physical therapy, Francesca's teaching is also influenced by her love of Buddhist teachings and a constant curiosity about anatomy and biomechanics. Francesca offers private 1:1 yoga classes, mentors yoga teachers in The Science of the Private Lesson™, hosts the podcast The Mentor Sessions: Support & Strategy for Yoga Teachers, and is the founder of the adjoining community, The Mentor Sessions Sangha.   Francesca explains the benefits of teaching without demos and how we can start to teach without doing demos in yoga classes. She shares her tips like sitting on your hands while teaching and how to cue effectively as well as how to ease the transition if you currently rely on demos to teach. Francesca also shares how she counters pushback like “people are visual learners” and what to do when accessibility is a factor and we need to share demos.   Key Takeaways: [2:13] Shannon shares a podcast she is learning from. [6:13] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Francesca Cervero. [10:05] Shannon gives a shout out to the sponsor, OfferingTree. [12:48] What does Francesca do and who does she do it for? [14:18] What does Francesca do in terms of demonstrations vs no demonstrations as she is teaching. [16:43] What are some of the benefits of not doing demos? [19:58] You might feel inclined to demonstrate because you're feeling nervous. Francesca addresses this and shares some tips  that can help. [25:16] The only way to gain the skills to teach without demonstrating is to practice them. [27:29] Recording yourself teaching with just your voice can be a helpful technique to get better at teaching without demonstrating. [30:40] How does Francesca deal with that awkward moment when people in the class are waiting to see a demonstration because that's what they've become used to? [36:15] Teaching without demonstrating isn't black-and-white. The key is to focus on the student and what cues might help them. [40:14] Shannon and Francesca discuss the difference between teaching yoga and doing yoga for your own practice. [41:26] What can yoga teachers do when they're teaching online and their students want to have their video off? [49:02] Find out more about Francesca and how to work with her via her podcast, mentor sessions, and her community. [49:34] Francesca addresses two scenarios that yoga teachers may have questions about - teaching beginners without demos and teaching in situations with a language barrier or to people who are deaf and hard of hearing. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 225: Yoga for Hip Pain with Shannon Crow   Description: Do you have students who come to you complaining of “hip pain”? Or have you experienced pain in the hips, lower back, abdomen or pelvic area yourself? Many people experience acute or persistent pain in their hip and pelvic area, and in this episode, Shannon Crow does a mini-training to address these pains.   Shannon has had personal experience with pelvic girdle pain, which she used to call “hip pain”, for over 20 years. In this time, she has worked in her own yoga practice, and with health care and medical professionals to address this pain, and has gained a wealth of information about the topic. She shares some questions that can be helpful to ask yoga students who are experiencing “hip pain” and talks about why the language we use is important in our experience of pain. Shannon also has some movements and exercises that can help alleviate and decrease pelvic girdle pain for you to try out in your own practice and with your students.   If you have ever experienced any sort of pain in your hip or pelvic area, or have students who are, this mini-training will be very helpful.   Key Takeaways: [6:09] This episode is a mini-training on hip pain. [6:45] Shannon starts with some questions and definitions. Have you experienced acute pain and persistent pain? [8:50] What are some messages we have heard about the hips? What are some messages we have said? [10:49] Where are your hips, and where are your hip joints? [14:19] Why doesn't Shannon say hip pain to her students anymore? "Hip pain" or pelvic pain usually occurs in the sacroiliac joint (S.I. joint), the coccyx (tailbone), the pubic symphysis (pubic bone), the hip joint, and the entire pelvic area including the lower abdomen, the pelvis and perineum. [16:07] Shannon clarifies that she doesn't go around correcting people on proper anatomical terms to use. [17:59] Shannon talks about some of the cues yoga teachers use in relation to the hips. [19:06] What are three important questions to ask your yoga students who come to you with hip or pelvic pain? [21:16] As yoga teachers, it is not in our scope of practice to diagnose pain. [22:52] It is important to understand that the pelvis is strong and stable. [24:57] The language we use can make a huge difference in our experience with pain. [25:57] What are some things we can do when experiencing pelvic girdle pain, and the pelvis is sensitive and protective? [34:15] Shannon recommends trying out these movements in your own practice to see how it feels, and then you can incorporate it into your yoga classes. [35:20] For a deep dive to learn more about these movements and why they work to decrease pain, check out the full training.   Things to Try for Pelvic Girdle Pain                        Exhale on effort / exertion  Space for Sitz bones S Breath Question Kegels Rolling over Side-to-side standing  Walking backwards Symmetrical Movements   Links: Full Training: Yoga for Pelvic Girdle Pain Pain science episodes Cueing Hips in Yoga - Facebook Thread The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Episode 073: 8 Limbs of Yoga [Part 1] with Shannon Crow The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Episode 075: Yoga for Pelvic Girdle Pain with Dr. Sinead Dufour Reducing Pelvic Girdle Pain In Daily Life by Shannon Crow for Yoga Anytime   The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Episode 009: Kegels, Mula Bandha and Pelvic Health with Shelly Prosko Pelvic floor episodes The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Episode 193: Pelvic Symmetry Sequence with Shannon Crow     Gratitude to our Sponsors Schedulicity and Pelvic Health Professionals.   Quotes from this episode: "The key to serving your yoga students is to ask more questions. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast Ep 127: Let Nature Theme Your Classes with Alee Link   Description: Do you create your classes around a certain theme? Or have you been a part of a class where every pose and transition was intentional and flowed, and it left you wishing you knew how to structure your classes like that? Alee Link is great at intentional teaching, and finds the inspiration for her classes in nature - she shares how you can, too!   Alee Link attended her first yoga class when she was 12 years old, and in 2011, she completed her 200-hour RYT certification. In 2013, Alee and her husband founded River Flow Yoga and Wellness in Georgia, where she offers students yoga classes primarily rooted in Vinyasa (Flow) Yoga. She also created the MoonLIT Tribe app, which offers moon rituals, mantra, guided meditation and more for people looking to connect with themselves, each other, the planet, the stars, and everything around us.   One of Alee's specialities is intentional teaching around a general theme for each class. She shares more about how she chooses her theme for each class, based on things that are going on in nature like the seasons, the placement of the moon, and the stars and what's going on around her. Shannon and Alee also discuss the importance of intentional teaching, and why teaching classes around a certain theme doesn't have to involve a lot of work.   If you've been thinking about where to get theme ideas for your classes, tune in to this episode to find out why you don't have to look any further than the nature around us for inspiration and guidance.   Key Takeaways: [6:18] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Alee Link. [8:16] What does Alee do, and who does she do it for? [9:43] Alee was only 12 years old when she went for her first yoga class. When did she decide to become a yoga teacher? [14:15] What are some things Alee wishes she had known when choosing her first yoga teacher training? [18:40] How does Alee teach intentionally and theme her classes? [25:20] Alee shares an anecdote from her experience about the founding of the MoonLIT app, and how yoga teachers can use the app. [31:37] Shannon and Alee discuss the importance of nature, not just in yoga but in other aspects of life. [33:20] How much pressure does Alee feel in being intentional with every pose and transition in her teaching sequence? Does she communicate her intentions with her class? [40:23] When leading yoga teacher training to new teachers, how does Alee guide them to create themes for their classes apart from just focusing on their own practice? [45:08] How does Alee map out her classes? [50:01] What is something Alee has learned in leading yoga teacher training? [52:46] What has been a lightbulb moment for Alee's teachers in her training? [58:11] Does Alee also incorporate things that are going on around us in the world, in terms of news, current events or politics? [1:03:29] Get in touch with Alee on social media, check out the MoonLIT app, or visit her websites to find out more about her work.
