Today he is the senior consultant for OT Cybersecurity, focusing on building automation systems at Intelligent Buildings. If you’d like to geek out on such things, reach out to Kyle via LinkedIn or email blackhole@secretdomain.xyz. In this conversation, Kyle discusses the world of building management systems and the importance of cybersecurity in this field. He highlights the diversity of building systems and the interconnectedness of various components. The conversation emphasizes the need for a risk-based approach to security and the importance of policies and standards. Kyle also emphasizes the value of understanding the system and planning ahead to mitigate risks. The conversation concludes with a discussion on securing remote access and implementing segmentation. The conversation explores the lack of cybersecurity preparedness in organizations, the need to translate cybersecurity risks to business risks, the likelihood of attacks and targeting, the challenge of selling likely risks, exciting technological advances in cybersecurity, concerns about AI and rapid technological changes, and closing thoughts and a call to action. Takeaways Building management systems encompass a wide range of components, including HVAC systems, fire alarms, and lighting. A risk-based approach to security is crucial in building management, considering the diverse systems and potential vulnerabilities. Policies and standards play a significant role in ensuring the security and reliability of building management systems. Simple solutions, such as proper cable management and backup plans, can greatly enhance the security and availability of building systems. Understanding the system and planning ahead are essential for effective risk mitigation in building management. Securing remote access and implementing segmentation are key measures to protect building management systems from cyber threats. Many organizations are not adequately prepared for cybersecurity threats, either due to limited budgets or lack of expertise. It is important to translate cybersecurity risks into business risks to help organizations understand the potential impact on their operations. Cyber attacks can come from various sources, including nation-state actors, but also from simple human errors or system failures. Selling the importance of cybersecurity can be challenging, as the most likely risks may not be as sensational as nation-state attacks. Exciting technological advances in cybersecurity are on the horizon, but they also bring concerns about the potential risks and implications of AI and rapid technological changes. — Connect with Kyle: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyle-peters-2a7173116/ Connect with Aaron Crow: Website: www.corvosec.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaronccrow Learn more about PrOTect IT All: Email: info@protectitall.co Website: www.protectitall.co X: https://twitter.com/protectitall YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@PrOTectITAll FaceBook: https://facebook.com/protectitallpodcast To be a guest, or suggest a guest/episode please email us at info@protectitall.co — Show notes by NMP. Like the manufacturing sector, the building automation sector is going through its own digital transformation. Increasingly, end-users are moving away from the older proprietary systems of the past and adopting edge-to-cloud computing architectures. There is a drive to deploy more lower-cost sensors, both wired and wireless, to gather as much data as possible. At the same time, the industry has a considerable installed base of legacy building automation systems, applications, devices, and networks that must be managed, maintained, and gradually modernized. All of these factors create unique cybersecurity challenges. The ubiquitous connectivity and remote operations promised by IoT bring with it many security concerns. Legacy systems pose their own risks and vulnerabilities and are no longer the obscure systems that nobody is interested in anymore. Attackers take advantage of known vulnerabilities in both new and existing systems to disrupt operations, steal customer data, and cause destruction. SMART GREENHOUSES AND CANNABUSINESS The California Cannabis industry is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the world. While that presents a huge problem for growers, it has become a HUGE opportunity for my two guests, Luis Alvarez and Richard Newberry. If you’ve wondered how to get in on the growth of the cannabusiness market, then head on over to podcast.iotplaybook.com, where you learn about Smart Greenhouses and how you can take advantage of this rapidly growing opportunity. What You Will Learn: What is a smart greenhouse The opportunity for Smart Greenhouses in the global market Why IoT managed service providers are uniquely qualified to take advantage of this opportunity. Luis and Richard’s project with Matsui How the KMC Commander works podcast.IoTplaybook.com/podcasts/smart-building-technology-luis-alvarez-richard-newberry-2/ Creating Life With IoT Luis Alvarez is the owner of Alvarez Technology Group and Richard Newberry is the CEO of KMC Controls; two companies with a profound presence in the world of smart building technology. Smart buildings are the low-hanging fruit of IoT and recently, they have become increasingly popular in the cannabis industry. It has created a monumental opportunity for IoTMSPs as more and more facilities are being upgraded to keep business flowing. Old greenhouses are being retrofitted with smart lighting, automated water systems, and other technology while dispensary owners are installing IoT security systems to meet state regulations. There is a lot of movement in this particular niche, and it is a perfect time to get into the business of IoT. Data Consolidation and Smart Greenhouses Cannabusiness and agribusiness are not the only industries looking to overhaul their operations with new smart building technology. Recently, Luis and Richard did a project for Matsui, a flower business that provides most of the orchids in the United States. Matsui has sixty-five greenhouses to grow their product, but they do not have sufficient staffing or data management capabilities to effectively monitor everything that is happening. Luis and Richard helped them design a dashboard that consolidates all of their data and makes it accessible across all of their devices. Then, they figured out how to retrofit all of their greenhouses with intelligent technology. IoT Quality Control This is a perfect time to bring in smart building technology because it can save manpower and cut energy costs by nearly 40%. That is huge for cannabusiness because regulations are unforgiving and lighting for a small, personal grow-op can be upwards of $5,000 per month. When production costs are so high, everything must be done to ensure the product goes to market. The KMC Commander enables growers to install sensors and monitor everything from temperature and humidity to CO2. If you are interested in learning more about this technology and the opportunities associated with it, listen to the IoT Playbook episode, How Smart Greenhouses are Causing Cannabusiness to Grow – Guests: Luis Alvarez and Richard Newberry. About Luis Alvarez In less than a decade, Luis Alvarez has grown the Alvarez Technology Group, Inc. A visionary who never shies away from exploring exciting new technologies that might give his clients a competitive advantage, Luis specializes in working with executives and managers of small- and mid-sized businesses, sharing his expertise by advising them on trends, analyzing their systems for improved performance and planning how IT can help achieve their business goals. Episode 235: ControlTalk NOW — Smart Buildings PodCast for week ending August 13, 2017 features two insightful interviews with Marc Petock, Lynxspring’s Chief Communications Officer & Vice President, Marketing, and Aaron Gorka, Innovation Manager for ANT Technologies. Check out ACI’s European Smart Homes 2017; ControlTrends Discovers Monnit Wireless Sensors at Realcomm|IBcon 2017; Belimo’s Correcting Low Delta T Webinar: Internet of Things (IoT); Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2017; The Dark Web Goes Corporate; NIST Cybersecurity for IoT Program; and Therese Sullivan: Appreciating How Metadata Makes Artificial Intelligence Possible. Internet of Things (IoT) Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2017 Introduced by Senators Mark Warner, Cory Gardner, Ron Wyden, and Steve Daines. On August 1, 2017, the U.S. Government took a significant “lead by example” step forward in the battle of Internet of Things (IoT) security. Chief among the vendor commitments — that must be made to the U.S.Government: That their IoT devices are patchable; that the devices don’t contain known vulnerabilities; and that the devices don’t contain hard-coded passwords. ACI’s European Smart Homes 2017 will be taking place in London, UK, on 25th & 26th of October 2017.Join European Smart Homes 2017 conference on 25th & 26th October in London, UK and hear John Hutchins’ presentation entitled “Smart Homes and Utility Customer Experience – exploring the link between smart homes, connected devices and better customer experience for utility customers.” The Dark Web Goes Corporate, by Josh Fruhlinger, CSO. By Josh Fruhlinger, CSO. The “dark web” is a phrase strikes an ominous tone, conveying an impression of a marketplace where anything is for sale: hacking tools, weapons, drugs, child pornography, even freelance assassination services. And according to experts we spoke to, all of that’s still true. But something has changed in the way the dark web does business. If there was a time when venturing online to buy these illegal items was like taking your life in your hands in a dark alley, today the experience in quite different. ControlTrends Discovers Monnit Wireless Sensors at Realcomm|IBcon 2017. One of the really cool things about covering shows like Realcomm|IBcon is that we quite often get first looks at new vendors and technologies. Although wireless sensors are not new to Smart Buildings, Monnit’s approach and product offering are. Check this video out to see why. Monnit remote monitoring systems can be setup in just a few minutes and our intuitive interface makes managing your system a snap, and Mommit’s optimized RF communications platform provides superior wireless range for covering large areas. Ken’s Calendar: Belimo’s Correcting Low Delta T Webinar, Wednesday, August 23 at 1:00 PM EDT. Chilled water provided from a utility plant is commonly used in a building’s HVAC system in lieu of installing chillers. This results in lower return water temperatures which decreases the efficiency of the entire chilled water system resulting in the condition known as “Low ∆T Syndrome.” In this webinar we will review the design of a district chilled water system and discuss a study of a building where “Low ∆T Syndrome” was corrected at the point of water to air heat transfer. NIST Cybersecurity for IoT Program (20.8 Billion Connected Devices in Use by 2020). Though each of us, in our own way and at our speed, has willingly or unwillingly, become more acclimated and accepted the rapid proliferation of IoT devices connecting us to the data bases in the clouds, it is still a challenge to fully comprehend the impact this hatching reality will have on our personal lives and professional careers — and we probably should know a lot more. Among the many sources of valuable insight and guidance available to ControlTrends Community, the NIST’s Cybersecurity for the Internet of Things is certainly one of the best. Therese Sullivan: Appreciating How Metadata Makes Artificial Intelligence Possible. Therese Sullivan, editor of BuildingContext.me, and our ControlTrends’ eyes and ears from Silicon Valley, takes us on a data journey that begins at the ethereal origins of Artificial Intelligence (Dartmouth, 1956) and delivers us to metadata and Project Haystack — introducing some of the label makers in between. ControlTalk NOW for week ending June 26, 2016 takes a deeper dive into Realcomm/IBcon 2016 with Marc Petock joining us as co-host. Our first special guest was Intelligent Buildings’ Co-founder, Intelligent Buildings, Tom Shircliff, who shares his insight into some of the new technologies displayed at the show — soon to impact the industry, and the increased emphasis on water. Cyber security must be elevated to an organization’s highest priority, and physical measures, often overlooked, are of extreme importance to an effective cyber security program. Our next guest was Jeff Houpt, President and CEO at Automation Integrated, LLC, (AI) one of the premiere Master Systems Integrators in the country. The age of Analytics is upon us, in the very real sense, because analytics are the currency of the future that will provide so much value to the property managers. AI is launching Blue Forge its latest IoT application, which will change the analytic landscape. Our next guest was Shaun Klann, Executive Vice President, ‎Intelligent Buildings. Shaun clarified that the least expensive tenant to acquire is an existing tenant, and that by extended environmental control to occupants will enhance and improve their user experience. ControlTalk NOW — Smart Buildings VideoCast and Podcast for week ending May 8, 2016 features interviews with Smart Buildings Controls Renaissance expert Ken Sinclair, owner editor of Automated Buildings, and Cyber Security expert, Fred Gordy, Director of Cyber Security at Intelligent Buildings, LLC. Register now for the June 21st Realcomm/IBcon Smart Building Integrators Summit in San Jose. Additionally, BASSG introduces Analytics at the Edge Device; Functional Devices offers a new Fan Safety Alarm Control; and Peter Greisinger from Intermatic talks about some great products to battle Light Litter. ControlTalk NOW’s first interview is with Smart Buildings Controls Renaissance expert Ken Sinclair, owner editor of Automated Buildings. Ken Sinclair discusses Automated Buildings May Theme “Our Open IoT Centric Future,” Acquisition Impacts, and Open, Cheap, & Sexy Lighting Report. Ken Sinclair’s editorial in May’s Automated Buildings has a few Paul Revere like messages in the first two paragraphs. The first being that four relatively large control companies were bought recently, and the efficacious assimilation of their technologies will allow for much larger and more successful market penetration in the Building Automation arena from non-traditional directions. The Smart Buildings Controls Renaissance Begins — Review of Global EasyIO Partner Event in Paris. The Smart Buildings Controls Renaissance began a year ago in Paris as the great minds of smart buildings and building automation controls gathered at the EASY IO Event to discuss and reinvent the way we save energy and make buildings smarter. That week marked the beginning, but not the end of innovation in the Smart Buildings Control space. The vendors and systems integrators that gathered at the Global EasyIO Partner Event — from six continents, all agreed that buildings are the common language and currency — and EasyIO is the common language spoken. Pre-Con’s Smart Building Integrators Summit: Chart Your Next Moves from a Single Building to a Large Portfolio. Realcomm/IBcon 2016 Pre-Con Smart Building Integrators Summit provides a detailed map where the next-generation Master Systems Integrator is — and how you can get there. Today we are dealing with three different generations of smart building technologies: (1) Past (closed, proprietary, single system), (2) Current (more open and attempting to retrieve data and functionality of the older more closed systems) and (3) Future (IP-enabled, intuitive GUIs, analytics, edge devices pumping data directly to the cloud). But, with all of these new changes comes more and more involvement with IT technologies. BASSG Joins The Smart Buildings Controls Renaissance Introducing Analytics Processed at the Edge Device! When people say that we are living in the post-PC era they mean that the personal computer is being eclipsed as the center of the IT universe by the smartphone. With the advent of the Smart Buildings Controls Renaissance, operations technology is experiencing a similar reordering. In this new era of the Internet of Things (IoT), compute resources equivalent to a PC or smartphone are being integrated into all sorts of equipment and devices. For commercial buildings, a new category of IoT device is emerging -— the BASSG Energy Analytics Controller (EAC). Smart building applications development may soon revolve around the enormous possibilities of these edge devices. Functional Devices — A Much Simpler Decision Than Picking a 2016 Presidential Primary Candidate. Functional Devices does it again! The RIBMNLB-1 gives you a simple and effective FAN SAFETY ALARM CIRCUIT control. Functional Devices, Inc. has been designing and manufacturing quality electronic devices in the United States of America since 1969. Alarm Fault Application Explained: When the Latch/Fault Input is Closed (Normal state), the Relay is activated, and Red LED is Off. When Latch/Fault Input Opens (Alarm state), the Relay deactivates, and Red LED turns On. Until the Latch/ Fault Input is Closed AND either power is cycled or the RESET button is pressed, relay will remain in the Alarm state. Light Litter is Costing 2 Billion Dollars a Year! Light Litter, a term Ken Smyers coined, wastes two billion dollars a year in energy. What is Light Litter? Light Litter is when you have a beautiful sunny day and outside lights are still on. To see examples of light litter you can go to The Green Marines Facebook Page. If you see examples of Light Litter, please go to The Green Marines Facebook Page and upload a picture. Change starts with awareness, and as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Reach out to your local politician and ask them to stop Light Litter. this is a problem the HVAC and Smart Buildings Control Community can easily solve. In this video, Ken reaches out to Peter Greisinger from Intermatic to learn about the easy to use affordable lighting timers and controls that Intermatic has to eliminate light litter. ControlTalk NOW’s second interview is with Fred Gordy, Director of Cyber Security at Intelligent Buildings, LLC. Fred Gordy is one of the leading evangelists on Cyber Security, particularly as it applies to Operational Technology (OT) versus Information Technology (IT). In this interview, Fred delivers another critical collection of cyber security and cyber terrorism information — as it pertains the building management systems’ world. The threat is real and increasing, and the human variable in the equation is the most important. If you don’t have a policy or internal guidance yet, click here. Marvel Comics has nothing on the marvelous folks at Mobile Air Force, the champions of chill, as they fight for truth, justice, and mobile air conditioning! There’s nothing like a little comic animation to convey a lot of information about superhero-like fast emergency service. Mobile Air, Inc. is a specialty HVAC company dealing exclusively in portable air conditioning, heating, filtration, and dehumidification systems, for both temporary and long term solutions. Sensors, Sensors Everywhere: In the Near Future, Structures and Systems Will Look After Themselves. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) began in the early 1800′s with railroad wheel-tappers, which used the sound of a hammer striking the train wheel to evaluate if damage was present. The IoT sensor proliferation that continues to increase the number of application instances will soon deliver this significant SHM concept, which is similar, yet different, than our Fault Detection and Diagnostics — nearer and nearer to our workstations (cautious optimism). Science and Technology from Los Alamos. Intelligent Buildings’ Tom Shircliff at IBCON 2014: The Technology is Here, Let’s Get Started! BASremoteAugust 2014 — The BASremote has evolved over the years from its original intent as a BACnet/IP remote I/O device. We were one of the first to add a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) option ― allowing the device to operate without the need for control panel power. Next, we added Modbus RTU to BACnet/IP gateway functionality which greatly expanded the point handling capability of the unit.
