Thousands of Egyptian families have arrived in Nashville since the 1990s, and many of the new arrivals have kept the local service industry afloat, staffing the Gaylord Opryland hotel and other tourist destinations. As the community continues to plant roots in Nashville, it faces several challenges. There are those many communities face, like displacement due to gentrification, but also unique issues, like the need for an Arabic language option on driving tests, and more communication between a Coptic Christian majority and a Muslim minority. The community is also supporting a new wave of Egyptian asylum seekers that are entering the U.S. through Mexico. We sit down with three Egyptian Americans from three different generations. But first, we hear an update on the legislative special session from WPLN's reporting team at the statehouse. Guests: Ashraf Azer, Operations Manager, Gaylord Opryland Hotel, board member, ElMahaba Center Ragab Rashwan, owner, King Tut's food truck Mirette Henin, journalist, mapmaker for A Map of Coptic Nashville project from the ElMahaba Center This episode was produced by Char Daston.

A week ago, I went on a road trip with my husband and we went to Gaylord Opryland that had 513 rooms. Made out of rocks. And it was built in 1913. And it was just an amazing place. And I started to think to myself, what was the creator thinking? Like what made that person build a place like this? And when I did my research, all of those rooms were done in just a year! It was mind-blowing! Who thinks like that in 1913? There weren't even cranes yet or the other big stuff to help you work on buildings. I believe that building started as a dream, and they turned it into a reality. But what if they didn't dream big? What if they didn't take the risks and didn't leave their comfort zones? In this week's episode, I will share how you can get out of your comfort zone, find what sparks you so you can continue to dream big and achieve those dreams. Because you have to remember that we're designed to conquer things. We're designed to do things we haven't done before.
Glenn is the President and CEO of Wellengood Partners, a hotel management and development firm based in Memphis, TN. Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a hotel ownership company? I have - and as a senior leader for several hotels and hotel management companies I was close to it for a long time but I always felt I had a knowledge gap in the air quote “business of hotels” side of the industry. This episode tries to fill in the blanks as Glenn, who started as a busboy at a Holiday Inn, talks about his journey up the ladder to eventually developing and managing a hotel. He shares great insight into the mechanics of how his company came to be, the pivot they made when they saw an opportunity to grow, how they went about financing their hotel and the lay of the land today as we emerge from this last downturn. About Glenn Wellengood President & CEO Glenn Malone co-founded the hotel management and development firm in 2002. As Executive, Malone plays an integral role in expanding the company's long term hotel development, operations and ownership portfolio. He is one of the founding partners in AAA 4-Diamond hotel The Westin Memphis, which is one of Wellengood's clients. Raised on a farm in Mississippi, Malone's career in the hotel industry started at age 16, having worked his way up from ground level positions to executive leader and ownership roles. His breadth of experience in the industry paved the way for him to successfully develop, brand, launch and operate an expansive and diverse hotel portfolio at Senate, ranging from properties of 80 to nearly 3,000 rooms, both franchised and non-franchised. Malone's portfolio includes John Q. Hammons Hotels, Hilton Worldwide, Holiday Inn Worldwide, Gaylord Palms, Gaylord Texan Resort, Gaylord Opryland, Marriott, Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites and Hampton Inn Hotels. Outside of the office, Malone is found traveling with family, enjoying outdoor sports or wrangling cattle back at the farm. His favorite vacation destination is Vail, CO, where you can find him snowboarding. Links Website: https://www.wellengood.com/ (https://www.wellengood.com)

November 18, 1995. Vicksburg, Mississippi. 62-year old Jacqueline Levitz, the wealthy widowed heiress to a furniture empire, vanishes from her home. Two days later, blood stains and evidence of a violent struggle are discovered inside her bedroom, creating the impression that Jacqueline met with foul play. Over the years, numerous suspects would be investigated, including members of Jacqueline’s family, her recently deceased husband’s family, workmen from a construction crew remodelling her home, and a mother-and-son con artist duo who would be convicted of the murder of another wealthy missing woman years later. However, no has ever been linked to Jacqueline Levitz’s unsolved disappearance, so this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” will explore all the different theories of what might have happened. December 2, 1919. Toronto, Ontario. Ambrose Small, a wealthy 56-year old theater tycoon, has just completed a deal to sell off all his holdings for $1.7 million. After having a meeting with his lawyer at his office at the Grand Opera House, Small vanishes without a trace. Over the years, suspicion would be directed at numerous suspects, including Small’s wife and his personal secretary, who fled the country after stealing some of Small’s bonds. However, there was never enough evidence to implicate anyone and the case would even veer into supernatural territory after there were reported sightings of Small’s ghost haunting one of his former theatres. After 68 full-length episodes and 32 minisodes, “The Trail Went Cold” has officially released its 100th episode and to commemorate the occasion, we have travelled back nearly 100 years to cover one of Canada’s most famous unsolved mysteries. Special thanks to listeners Heather Jones, Laura Fulks, Andrea Canfield, Abbey Martin and Casey Brandt for narrating sections of today’s episode. May 7, 1988. Mountainair, New Mexico. Steve Sandlin, a 21-year old rookie with the local police department, is found dead inside the station. He has been shot in the head and since the police chief pushes forward the theory that Steve’s death was either suicide or an accident, it is officially classified as “undetermined”. However, Steve’s family becomes suspicious when they discover several bags of marijuana planted inside his house and learn that Steve had recently arrested a local resident who was involved in drug dealing. Information is uncovered to suggest that Steve may have been the victim of a conspiracy involving other police officers and it would be several years before his death is reclassified as a homicide. This week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” covers our first unsolved cold case involving the death of a police officer. September 18, 1966. Kenilworth, Illinois. 21-year old Valerie Percy, the daughter of Illinois Senatorial candidate Charles Percy, is bludgeoned and stabbed to death in her bedroom by an unknown intruder who has broken into her family’s affluent home. Valerie’s stepmother enters the room and catches a brief glimpse of the perpetrator, but he manages to flee the scene. Over the years, numerous potential suspects would pop up on the radar, but no one is conclusively linked to the crime. Could Valerie have been the victim of a burglary gone wrong? Or was the killer a suspect whose family lived in the same neighbourhood? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we examine the brutal unsolved murder of a victim who hailed from one of Illinois’s most prominent families. November 13, 1981. Stinson Beach, California. 44-year old John Paul Russell and 34-year old Bob Dozier emerge from the Pacific Ocean, claiming that their yacht, the Freedom II, sank after a large freighter crashed into them. John’s 30-year old wife, Suzanne Russell, and their 20-year old friend, Kristen Tomlin, were also on the boat and presumed drowned. However, when no trace of the Freedom II can be found, investigators begin to suspect that the whole incident is an elaborate scam orchestrated by the two men. Evidence also suggests that Suzanne Russell may have been in on the scam and faked her own death. After hiding out as fugitives for over a decade, John Paul Russell and Bob Dozier are captured and serve time in prison for fraud, but no trace of Kristen Tomlin is ever found. Was Kristen also a part of the scam and did she stage her own disappearance? Or was she an innocent victim who fell prey to some con artists? This week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” covers an incredibly bizarre fraud scheme involving a missing boat which eventually turned into an unsolved missing persons case. November 16, 1969. Los Angeles, California. The murdered body of a young white female is discovered on a ravine overlooking Mulholland Canyon. She has been stabbed 157 times, but since she cannot be identified, the victim simply becomes known as "Jane Doe 59". 46 years later, DNA testing officially identifies her as 19-year old Reet Jurvetson, a Swedish-born Canadian citizen who had travelled to California before she went missing. Numerous theories surround the crime: was Reet an unconfirmed victim of the Manson Family? Or could her death be connected to an unidentified boyfriend named "Jean", whom she was visiting before she was killed? On this week's episode of "The Trail Went Cold", we chronicle the brutal unsolved murder of a woman who regained her identity after four decades. March 29, 1989. Brooklyn, New York. A 22-year old African-American woman named Monique Rivera and her six-week old son, Andre Bryant, leave on a shopping trip with two unidentified women, but never return. The following day, Monique's murdered body is discovered in a wooded area, but Andre is nowhere to be found. Within the next four-and-a-half months, two more African-American infants from the New York City area, two-year old Christopher Dansby and 20-month old Shane Walker, are abducted under strikingly similar circumstances from the same playground and never seen again. Could there have been a connection between the disappearances of Andre, Christopher and Shane? We will be examining all three of these unsolved cases on this week's episode of "The Trail Went Cold". Special thanks to listener Cecily Cooper for narrating the opening of this episode. December 8, 2000. Dublin, Ireland. After spending a rainy evening at a staff Christmas party, 22-year old Trevor Deely walks from a nightclub to his place of employment, the Bank of Ireland Asset Management headquarters. Trevor chats with a co-worker and grabs an umbrella, but after leaving the building to walk home and passing by an ATM camera over ten minutes later, he vanishes without a trace. CCTV footage would show an unidentified man standing outside Trevor's workplace and interacting him with that night. Was this man involved in Trevor's disappearance? For the first time, "The Trail Went Cold" will be travelling to Ireland to cover one of their most famous unsolved missing persons cases. August 19, 1977. Circleville, Ohio. After receiving a phone call, an angry Ron Gillispie frantically drives away from his home and dies after crashing into a tree. For the past several months, Ron's wife, Mary Gillispie, had been receiving anonymous threatening letters expressing anger about her alleged affair with another man. In total, over a thousand anonymous letters would be sent to residents of the area during this time period. Five-and-a-half years later, Mary would find a homemade booby trap containing a gun belonging to Ron's former brother-in-law, Paul Freshour. Paul is accused of being the author of the anonymous letters and spends ten years in prison for Mary's attempted murder, but the threatening letters continue to be sent while Paul is incarcerated. Was Paul Freshour the mysterious "Circleville Writer" or was he framed and wrongly imprisoned? For our special two-year anniversary show of "The Trail Went Cold", we will be chronicling a case which was voted on by our listeners: the bizarre saga of "The Circleville Letters". Special thanks to listener Jamie Sciullo for narrating the opening of this episode, and Tyler from "The Minds of Madness" podcast for providing the voice of the Circleville Writer. Also, a big thanks to Esther Gamez for providing us with another terrific piece of cover art for this episode. Be sure to check out Esther’s Facebook and Tumblr pages to see more of her artwork. February 14, 2006. Pahrump, Nevada. While working her shift at a bank, 41-year old Maureen Fields expresses concern that something is going to happen to her. The following day, Maureen fails to show up for work and her husband, Paul Fields, claims he last saw her when she left the house that morning. Maureen's abandoned car is discovered in the desert, but she is nowhere to be found and her husband immediately comes under suspicion. Years later, DNA evidence from the scene is matched to a convicted sex offender named Keith Wayne Holmes, but since he is suffering from dementia, Holmes is unable to provide answers about what happened before he passes away. February 14, 2007. Carlsbad, California. After not hearing from her, the concerned parents of 39-year old Jodine Serrin, who suffers from a mental disability, arrive at her condo. Jodine's father enters her bedroom and sees what appears to be a man engaged in sexual activity with his daughter. While the Serrins wait in the living room, the man sneaks out and Jodine's parents are horrified to discover their daughter has been murdered and that they unknowingly came face-to-face with her killer, who assaulted Jodine after she was already dead! September 8, 1981. Mount Vernon, South Dakota. 30-year old John Mathis contacts police to inform them that he has been shot in the arm after a struggle with a masked attacker on his farm. When police arrive, they discover that John's wife, LaDonna Mathis, and their two children, four-year old Brian and two-year old Patrick, have been shot to death. While John claims the masked attacker was responsible, investigators find a number of discrepancies in his story. John is eventually charged with murdering his wife and two sons, but when he goes on trial, the jury acquits him. Were LaDonna, Brian and Patrick actually killed by an unknown assailant? Or did John Mathis get away with the murder of his family? We examine both sides of this harrowing and controversial case on this week's episode of "The Trail Went Cold". May 5, 1996. Tijuana, Mexico. A young man is struck by a motorcycle while running across the highway and dies in hospital six days later. Three weeks pass before he is identified as Patrick Sean Kelly, a 22-year old Canadian film student who had gone missing from the University of Southern California. There are a number of suspicious discrepancies to suggest there is more to Patrick's death than a simple accident, as his ATM card is used and his vehicle is driven after he is hospitalized. The evidence also shows that Patrick may have travelled to Mexico with another young man, but this person is never identified. What compelled Patrick to make this trip? If he travelled with someone else, what happened to them? Was Patrick's death really caused by the motorcycle accident, or did the local authorities orchestrate a cover-up? These are just some of the unanswered questions in this week's baffling episode of "The Trail Went Cold", which chronicles an unexplained death which turned into a nightmare of jurisdictional red tape.
