There have been many moments of labor upsurge in America, including the influx of members into the Knights of Labor in 1886, the dramatic growth of unions during and in the immediate aftermath of World War I, and the great public sector unionism surge of the 1960s and 70s, but none matches the scale of the 1930s, when millions of workers were unionized under the aegis of the great labor federation, the Congress of Industrial Organizations, or CIO. If we're looking to get millions of private-sector workers into the labor movement, there's really one time to look to, and that is the ascendant period of the CIO. In Organize the Unorganized, a forthcoming podcast from the Center for Work & Democracy at Arizona State University and Jacobin Magazine, we'll be telling the story of the CIO through the voices of prominent labor historians, including Jeremy Brecher, Robert Cherny, Dorothy Sue Cobble, Lizabeth Cohen, David Brody, Melvyn Dubofsky, Steve Fraser, Rick Halpern, William P. Jones, Nelson Lichtenstein, Erik Loomis, Ruth Milkman, Daniel Nelson, Bryan Palmer, Lisa Phillips, Ahmed White, and Jim Young. These interviews have been spliced together into an account of the rise, importance, and legacy of the CIO. In addition to being released on soundcloud.com/organizetheunorganized, these episodes will also be released on Jacobin magazine's podcast feed. Jacobin will also be publishing the individual interview transcriptions while the podcast is running.

In Episode 158 of the Aerospace Advantage, Affordable Mass: Understanding Next Gen Munitions Requirements, Doug Birkey chats with Mitchell Institute's Mark Gunzinger and Jim Young of Boeing, who serves as the Executive Director for their Direct Attack portfolio within the Precision Engagement Systems organization. Most DOD air-to-surface munitions were designed for U.S. campaigns of the past 30 years in which its forces confronted lesser regional militaries operating weak air defenses. DOD is now planning for conflicts with peer adversaries. This is why the Air Force is acquiring 5th generation F-35 fighters and B-21 stealth bombers. However, new stealth aircraft are only as effective as the weapons they can deliver. Developing multiple variants of mid-range, stand-in precision guided munitions suitable for operations in contested environments is crucial. These munitions must be affordable to build high-capacity inventories necessary for the scale of peer-on-peer operations. This is a “must do” for the Air Force—it all comes down to getting enough bombs on target.

In today's episode we are tackling one of the most harmful societal constructs that has persisted for generations. And that is telling boys and men that having feelings is girly, that they aren't allowed to cry and that showing emotions is a sign of weakness.Listen in as I talk with author Jim Young who's book Expansive Intimacy: How “Tough Guys” Defeat Burnout, explores the rules of masculinity that force men into a false choice: that choice being either face shame by embracing their inner desires for meaningful connection, or invite burnout by following the harsh rules that require men to shun emotions and emphasize achievement. "Shame is this place that gets us into burnout and keeps us in burnout because we don't want to let people in on what's actually going on," says Jim Young. If you've ever felt burned out, embarrassed, and alone, this episode of The Conscious Entrepreneur podcast is a must-listen. Host Alex Raymond interviews Jim Young, a men's burnout coach and author of the book "Expansive Intimacy." In this powerful conversation, Jim shares his personal journey of burnout and the moment he realized he wasn't okay. He delves into the one-two punch of burnout and shame, discussing the societal expectations placed on men and the impact it has on their well-being. Jim offers a fresh perspective on burnout recovery, debunking common fallacies and emphasizing the importance of social support and intimacy. Through his concept of "expansive intimacy," Jim encourages entrepreneurs to cultivate deep connections, both personally and professionally, to combat burnout. This episode will provide you with valuable tools and resources to navigate burnout, redefine success, and create a more fulfilling entrepreneurial journey. Key Takeaways: Burnout is a chronic condition that requires a comprehensive approach to recovery, including addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Shame plays a significant role in burnout, as men often feel the need to hide their struggles and weaknesses, leading to increased stress and exhaustion. Expansive intimacy, which involves building deep and authentic connections with others, is a powerful tool for combating burnout and creating a support system. Burnout recovery fallacies, such as taking a vacation or implementing productivity hacks, are not effective solutions and do not address the underlying causes of burnout. Seeking support from trusted individuals, whether they are friends, colleagues, or professionals, is crucial in navigating burnout and finding the necessary resources for recovery. Quotes: “I think that the socialization that we get as men in Western culture has a set of rules, and they're pretty clear to any guy who's grown up in this culture, and that's we need to be strong, we need to be successful, we can't show our emotions, we can't ask for help. And when you put all that together, it's kind of an impossible puzzle. that it's going to lead to, well, I just got to be alone. I have to suffer in silence if anything is up for me because I can't share emotions. I can't ask for help. Well, that's not human. That's not a reasonable expectation.” (14:47 | Jim Young) "If you're having problems sleeping, if you're having more bouts of whether you want to call it moodiness, or depression, if you're feeling anxious, oftentimes anxiety and lack of sleep are going together." (21:19 | Jim Young) "Anything that you might find under an article that talks about life or productivity hacks is not going to be an effective strategy for burnout recovery." Looking back on their career-building years, few finance leaders ever forget the first time that they presented to a board of directors. For many, the stares of the individual directors around the table remain locked in time, forever evergreen. For Jim Young, the gazes that stay ever-present are some that were cast not from across a boardroom but instead by a room populated by hundreds of employees attending an offsite management gathering. “My job was to communicate some of the important trends—with a little bit of perspective on the investment community—and to highlight different aspects of what was going on with our business,” explains Young, who adds that his primary intent was to bring the company's customer value proposition into sharper focus and better expose how it translated into customer retention. What happened next, Young tells us, left a lasting impression. “There were a lot of questions, and I could see this high engagement as I scanned the audience,” remarks Young, who differentiates this experience from his more frequent discussions with the company's investment community. “The audience's interest was not because I had brilliant insight or was presenting a great analysis of how we could create value in the business,” comments Young, who reports that following the gathering he completed a postmortem on the talk in order to better understand what was responsible for the gathering's rapt attention. “We had this very specific metric that in the past had gotten a few nods and maybe even been paid some lip service, and now at this session it suddenly became the focus of a discussion that revealed it to be something that was really quite valuable,” recalls Young, who today credits his talk with simply having “connected the dots.” “The average employee could now understand and translate the metric to his or her business area and to their salespeople and all the rest,” continues Young, who observes that the talk also helped to raise the profile of his finance team by enabling it to better engage with business managers intrigued by what Young had shared. “I make company leaders better at what they do by helping them to explain where we're driving value and by making these connections visible all the way through to very tangible things,” notes Young, as he issues what might well be his CFO mission statement. Reflecting back on the talk, he adds: “To this day, I use it as a lesson as far as how I should do my job goes—if I'm not connecting dots, I'm not doing my job.” –Jack Sweeney
Jim Young is a burnout coach, author, comedian, and Dad of three. His new book Expansive Intimacy leverages the emotional intelligence we need in the workplace, allowing Dads to form deep connections and show up in more ways as a caring human as well as a competent CEO. Jim uses humor in his posts as well as his formal work with corporations, employing improv comedy as a way to elicit authentic and playful interactions in safe spaces. Jim wanted to be a nurturing Dad but could not find the time and support to do that in corporate America. His burnout journey led him to define success in a different way, by the depth of his connections. You can find my free guides to prevent burnout at www.DrJacquelineKerr.com/free-guides.
Toughen up. Be a man. Boys don't cry. Centuries of social conditioning have created a stigma around men's mental health and burnout. And it's killing them. 75% of suicides are men. Suicide is the biggest cause of death among men under 50. Men experience higher rates of cancer, heart disease and addiction - physical health conditions associated with high-stress lifestyles. Men's mental health, in our workplaces, society and homes, is the conversation we should be having. In a break from our normal format, this episode focuses on a conversation between Co-Host Al Elliott, and our expert guest, Jim Young. Just two 40-something guys discussing uncried tears, burnout and being very f@*king far from ok. It's a conversation you've likely never heard before. Join Al and Jim for an honest, vulnerable conversation about men's mental health, including: What does burnout look like for men? You might remember Jim Young from a few episodes ago. I was invited to his EI EI EI Oh! Newsletter where I got to share some insights around diversity and inclusion. “Creating equity requires us to get to know and understand other people and to come from a sense of humility, that we're not always right.“ It's a lesson I'm learning everyday and a lesson for all leaders who are seeking to build people-centric work environments. It's so great to build relationships with my amazing guests above and beyond my own podcast. We are building a better world of work together! Intimacy. I'm just going to leave that hanging there for a sec. Does that word make you feel awkward? Or Uncomfortable? Well, it shouldn't. Intimacy, the meaningful, personal connection between people, is something that we as humans all need to survive and thrive. And yet, despite this, cultural norms for so many years have lionized the idea of a "tough guy," someone who shuns their emotions and vulnerability and takes life in the chin. So much so that the word intimacy is more often than not conflated with sex when it's spoken of. It's time for a change. Jim Young is an executive coach and author of "Expansive Intimacy: How "Tough Guys" Defeat Burnout," and he is here to share his thoughts on overcoming the stigma around intimacy and how we can all live more content and connected lives.
“It's like having orange street cones there. You see ‘em. You know they're there, but you can blow past them and it's not going to stop you. That was my story ten years ago... I had to say it's not about some external circumstance. It's about what am I choosing.” - Jim Young, on chasing self-worth through work Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Jim Young. In addition to being a wildflower collector that loves working in his garden, Jim is a men's burnout coach, an improv comedian, an author, a speaker, and a facilitator. Jim's overarching mission is to explore “expansive intimacy” - a way of being that allows us to connect deeply with people across all realms of our life. In this conversation, Jim and Ashanti find a lot in common, namely, their mama's boy mentalities, there struggle with setting boundaries with their work life, and their belief that, as Jim puts it, “life is best when shared intimately”. (7:20) Jim introduces himself and what makes him the master of dad jokes. (10:20) Jim shares the front of his mask - calm, funny, helpful - and breaks down the corresponding image he drew. (13:05) Ashanti shares the front of his mask - funny, caring, hard-working (busy) - and finds common ground in Jim's writing on burnout. Then, he and Jim discuss men's relationship with the act of caring. (21:15) Jim shares the back of his mask - insecure, wannabe mama's boy, critic - and runs through all the thoughts that are firing through his mind as he navigates himself and the world. (25:35) Ashanti shares the back of his mask - Am I Enough, Worried, “I need a vacation”. He breaks down how he feels overloaded as a leader and what it felt like once he began to unload. Then, Jim relates to Ashanti's sentiments with one key word: spaciousness. (36:05) Jim and Ashanti discuss the natural guardrails of life and how easy it is to blow through them in unhealthy ways. (43:50) Ashanti takes the time to appreciate his nephew, redefine success, and breaks down the five F's. (48:50) Jim shares a final message for the audience. Then, he shares how you can get in touch with him.
