Black folks are often told homeownership and real estate are the royal road to wealth creation and stability. Government policies like the mortgage interest tax deduction are held up a "hidden secret" white people use to game the systems. Some Black people hold homeownership as "beating 'them' at their own game" and using the "masters tools " to gain power. However, a new book raises questions as the whether this is actually the case. We anaylize "The Whiteness of Wealth" by Dorothy A. Brown - which argues homeownership fails to fulfill its promise to stabilize Black communities and build wealth for Black families. We'll be speaking on: gentrification, the dangers of increased property tax bills, complicating narratives of housing price appreciation as inherently good and concrete steps communities can take to address housing needs in their community without uncritically accepting "Buy the Block" mythology. That one episode where we explain gentrification. This week, after spending a considerable amount of time driving through her old stomping grounds, Adriana decided to bring the podcast back to the research and discuss gentrification. We'll talk history, and the systemic policies were put into place that made communities vulnerable to gentrification. In addition to historical context, Adriana explains the interesting history of gentrification in her hometown, Austin, TX. We then move into discussing common patterns of city investment (and, in turn, disinvestment), and ways to identify, and eventually work to reverse gentrification. As per usual, Adriana has a lot to say; this week's 'OG Says' segment discusses some of our need to take on personalities that do not align with our authentic selves; we'll talk fake-deep, and the need to be perceived as "deep" in the first place. This episode ends with a reminder that we do not have to be active through every stage of life, and that the importance of stillness as an act of self-reflection, growth, and situational evaluation is just as important as “changing what you can change.” Sorry, #TeamNoSleep. This is yet another L for y'all.

Hello this is Nate Scott, author of Life Is Rich: How To Create Lasting Wealth, and welcome to the Life Is Rich podcast. In today’s ‘Life Is Rich” podcast, I’m going to share an interview with Anthony Kimble, Managing Partner of Kimble Properties, How to Buy the Block and Buy Back Baton Rouge Fund. Co-Director of Louisiana Elite Sports Organization. (https://www.akimbleproperty.com/) Anthony Kimble is a recognized leader in the Baton Rouge community and is the founder and managing partner of Kimble Properties LLC, a privately held real estate investment and development company. In addition to his role at Kimble Properties, Mr. Kimble is an avid mentor in his own youth basketball program, a serial entrepreneur, and a dedicated social activist. Mr. Kimble was born and raised in Baton Rouge and attended Stanford University, where he was a Science, Technology, and Systems major, as well as a member of the varsity football team. His primary objective is to teach the value of wealth building, property ownership, and financial literacy to individuals in the communities he grew up in, which have historically been disadvantaged. Through his work in the real estate community, Mr. Kimble seeks to expose the youth in these neighborhoods to the value of entrepreneurship and the power of owning property. Moreover, Mr. Kimble places a major emphasis on sustainable design and repurposing, as he believes that every historical property has a story to tell. His interests in urban sustainability prompted him to pursue a master’s degree in sustainable real estate development from Tulane University and have propelled the company’s efforts in promoting sustainable living and ecologically friendly practices. Some in the industry claim the line between asset and property management has blurred, as technology, job demands have evolved. Recently, in an Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) white paper, “Asset & Property Management: A Shifting Dynamic,” John Salustri suggested that “the lines between asset management and property management are blurred.” The argument is worthy of deeper examination. Bryan Chavis, author of Buy It, Rent It, Profit, breaks it down.

What do you do after you buy a piece of real estate? In this episode, we dive into the Buy The Block movement and talk about next steps moving forward. In the first segment, we discuss the different ways to start real estate investing. We discuss REIT's and other real estate platforms like Prosper. Next, we talk about rental properties if you are looking for some residual income or maybe house flipping is another way to make money in the real estate space. In the second segment, we discuss building relationships with people in your neighborhood to scale it. We consider building camaraderie through community events, neighborhood directories, or a home development consortium model. After the break, we talk about how to deter crime in the neighborhood. We discuss why forming an HOA and neighborhood watch can be great crime deterrents along with keeping lawns mowed and clear of debris. If you can't afford a security system, there are other ways to protect your home. Lastly, we discuss what a great neighborhood looks like. From access to a medical facility to access to public transportation can make a neighborhood flourish. We explain that at this point of scaling the neighborhood property values are high, everyone has bought it to the community and you now hold the political power that politicians have to take notice of for years to come.
