It all comes down to this. A championship is on the line this weekend in Lethbridge as the Canadian College Baseball Conference season comes to an end. It feels like the regular season just flew by, but the Alberta teams surely made an impact. Prairie Baseball Academy finished on top with a 21-11 record, with the Edmonton Collegiate Hawks and University of Calgary Dinos finishing third and fourth, respectively. But it's anyone's game come the final weekend, and one player who can attest to that is Jacob Honke. The EC Hawks infielder is heading into his last collegiate games as he's set to graduate from the University of Alberta, with an eye on becoming a strength and conditioning coach, something he's doing already with Taylor Burns at Absolute Human Performance and AHP Academy. Honke, who hails from Red Deer, joined us recently to talk about being a veteran presence heading into championship weekend, the evolution of the Hawks program since he first started, and what it means to have family not only on, but off the field with him.

Blink, and you might just miss it. For any player entering their final year of college eligibility, it feels like it doesn't take very long to go from raw rookie to standout veteran. Such is the case for Marcus Coderre. The fifth-year University of Calgary Dinos third baseman has become a key piece of the leadership group that has helped turn the program around, to the point where they are now a serious contender heading towards the Canadian College Baseball Conference Championships in a couple of weeks. The 5-foot-11 Coderre is hitting .228 with 11 RBI and 2 stolen bases in 26 games, but more importantly has been instrumental in helping the young Dinos core establish itself quickly, sitting with a 15-13 record as we recorded this episode. The Calgary product joined us recently for a great chat about his baseball journey, his hope to give back through coaching, and what he's learned under Calgary Wildcats senior director of baseball operations and former MLB hurler Chris Reitsma.

We put the wraps on our Canadian College Baseball Conference preview episodes this week by chatting with University of Calgary Dinos bench boss Cam Williams. Originally from Coquitlam, BC, Williams moved to Calgary to study kinesiology and play baseball. We first met the infielder back in 2018 when he set the Dinos all-time record for career hits. He stayed in Calgary, joining the Bucks coaching staff before taking the top job with the Dinos. It's been a weird start to his coaching career, doing it all during a pandemic. But he's had some early success as the team finally got to play some games over the last couple of weeks, guiding them to a .500 record. What's the transition been like? What are his coaching philosophies? And what kinds of advice is he passing onto his players? We chatted about it all recently.

The Gold Standard: Building a World-Class Team by Coach K: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6033770-the-gold-standard Bio (from Dinos website): Dan Vanhooren joined the Dinos in May 2000 and is the seventh men’s basketball head coach at the University of Calgary. Since he took over the program, Vanhooren’s Dinos have made a steady climb into elite status in U SPORTS basketball. In just four years, he took a program that had not enjoyed a winning season in nearly a decade all the way to the conference title and within two points of the national final in 2004. It was Calgary’s first Canada West championship since 1993, and their first-round victory at the Final 8 in Halifax was the Dinos’ first national quarterfinal win in 38 years. The two-point semifinal loss came at the hands of the Carleton Ravens, who went on to win the CIS title. In 2008, he coached the Dinos to their best conference record since 1976 (18-4) and played host to the Canada West Final Four in front of a sold-out Jack Simpson Gym. Eight years later in 2016, the Dinos won their sixth Canada West Championship and went on to compete in the national finals for the first time since 1966 against the Carleton Ravens. The Dinos finished with a silver medal. It was the first of five consecutive trips to the national tournament for the Dinos, who captured three conference titles in four years (2016, 2018, 2019) and reached the program's pinnacle with the 2018 national championship - a 79-77 win over Ryerson in Halifax. The following season, the Dinos posted the first undefeated season in program history at 20-0, winning an eighth Canada West title before falling in the national final. Vanhooren earned his second Canada West coach of the year honour in 2018-19 and became the first Dinos coach to win the Stewart W. Aberdeen Trophy as U SPORTS coach of the year the same season. Currently, he is head coach of the Canadian national junior team. Vanhooren moved to Calgary following a four-year stint as head coach of Medicine Hat College. In 2000 he coached the Rattlers to a bronze medal finish and was named the ACAC south coach of the year. He played varsity basketball at the University of Alberta under the legendary Don Horwood. After three seasons with the Golden Bears, Vanhooren graduated with a Bachelor of Physical Education in 1993 and moved to graduate studies at the University of British Columbia. While attending UBC he worked for the NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies in their inaugural season, and he received his Master’s of Human Kinetics in 1996. Vanhooren is a certified NCCP Level III coach. Dan and his wife Kara reside in northwest Calgary with their three children: Peyton, Wyatt, and Nash.
