The start of the program is delayed by a war bulletin from Guam, which is not heard on this recording. (00:01) Aging Golfers and Hybrids This chapter explores the unique challenges and adjustments that come with playing golf as we age. We highlight the irony that as we have more time to enjoy golf, our physical capabilities often diminish, leading to the need for different strategies and equipment choices. The discussion includes adapting to the realities of aging, such as reduced clubhead speed and the benefits of incorporating more hybrids into our golf bags. We also share anecdotes and insights on how many golfers overestimate their current abilities based on past performances, which can lead to on-course frustration. The goal is to embrace these changes and continue to enjoy the game, potentially even striving to shoot our age in the future. (12:28) Techniques for Penetrating Bunker Shots This chapter explores the transformative journey of four elderly women learning to play golf more effectively. Initially, they struggled with common techniques that weren't suitable for their physical abilities, resulting in a lack of control and unsuccessful shots. We discuss how adjusting their grip and stance, specifically by hinging their wrists and standing the club vertically, helped them gain better control and achieve greater clubhead speed. By positioning the ball at the bottom of their divot and making a regular swing, they could easily navigate the sand and clear obstacles, ultimately improving their game. This approach underscores the importance of adapting techniques to individual needs, especially when physical strength is a limiting factor. (21:17) Improving Golf Swing for Seniors This chapter explores the nuances of grip pressure and balance in golf, especially for older players seeking to maintain or increase their swing speed. We discuss the common misconception that slowing down can lead to better control, emphasizing instead the importance of maintaining balance and grip control to generate more efficient power. Highlighting the challenges of translating force into relatable terms, we examine how changes in stance, grip, and posture can aid in achieving a faster and more balanced swing. The focus is on finding the right grip pressure that allows for control without sacrificing mobility, enabling seniors to optimize their swing for better distance and ball speed. (34:20) Improving Golf Swing Without Tech This chapter explores adjustments to make in your golf game as you age, focusing primarily on increasing swing speed without relying on high-tech equipment. We discuss using an alignment stick to identify the loudest point in your swing, indicating where the club is moving fastest, and how shifting that point can lead to speed gains. Techniques like turning your chest toward the target and enhancing wrist action are highlighted. While we recognize the value of launch monitors, we also acknowledge that not all instructors use them due to their cost. We suggest a simple, cost-effective training tool involving a rope and a Nerf ball to help improve swing speed, emphasizing that these low-tech solutions can be surprisingly effective in enhancing your game. (44:04) Golf Course Length Strategy for Seniors This chapter explores how to determine the appropriate course length by multiplying the distance you hit with a five iron by 36, offering a practical approach to tailor your game. We also share our excitement for the upcoming 52 weeks of shows, encouraging listeners to tune in regularly or catch up on past episodes at thoseweekendgolfguys.com. Reflecting on our journey over the past 11 years, we express gratitude for the audience's support and provide a reminder to follow Jeff's advice for improving your golf experience, particularly as you age.

(00:01) Power and Putting in Golf This chapter explores the fundamentals of generating power in a golf swing, focusing on the crucial role of ground force. We examine how energy originates from our interaction with the ground and is transferred through our bodies to enhance swing speed. Through practical examples, like push-ups and spinning in a chair, we illustrate how pushing into an immovable object—like the ground—creates propulsion. We clarify misconceptions about timing, emphasizing that many golfers apply this force too late in their swings, reducing effectiveness. Insights from recent power schools highlight how understanding and timing ground force correctly can lead to improved swing performance and lower scores. (14:41) Golf Swing Sequencing Tools and Tips This chapter focuses on the importance of proper sequencing in a golf swing and how common issues can arise when the arms move faster than the torso. To address this, we explore simple and accessible tools to improve swing sequencing. We emphasize the benefits of using a rope to practice swings, as it naturally encourages the correct sequence from the lower body to the torso and arms, unlike other tools that allow for pushing. Additionally, we introduce a homemade device made from PVC pipe and a swim noodle to enhance the traditional method of using a club across the shoulders. This innovative tool provides comfort and a springy effect to help golfers rotate their chest effectively without discomfort. Through these practical solutions, we aim to help golfers achieve a more synchronized and powerful swing. (26:07) Improving Distance With Tour Striker This chapter highlights the importance of not just clubhead speed but also ball speed, spin, and launch angle in achieving greater distance in golf. We emphasize that striking the center of the clubface is crucial, as faster clubhead speed is ineffective if the ball is hit poorly. I introduce the Tour Striker club, designed by Martin Chuck, which helps golfers improve their striking by ensuring proper contact and de-lofting, resulting in better launch angles and smash factors. We also discuss how newer golf clubs might offer more forgiveness, but ultimately, skill in hitting the ball correctly remains key to maximizing distance. By practicing with specialized training tools and focusing on proper technique, anyone can improve their golf game and hit the ball farther without relying solely on the latest club technology. (35:43) Mastering Short Game and Putting This chapter explores the intricacies of improving short game performance in golf, particularly focusing on the importance of mastering wedge shots and putting techniques. We discuss how honing wedge shots can lead to better performance with longer irons, emphasizing the same fundamental principles. The conversation highlights common pitfalls in putting, such as overactive wrists and poor grip, which often lead to missed shots. I share insights on calming the wrists and achieving a more stable stroke by adjusting the grip to fit natural arm positions, thus minimizing face twists. Additionally, we address the debate over whether putting strokes should be straight back and through or arcing, clarifying that it can be a combination of both, depending on individual technique and putter design. (45:14) Improving Pitching Leads to Successful 5-Iron This chapter shares an anecdote about the significant improvements in golf skills, particularly in pitching, following Jeff's guidance. I recount how, despite previous struggles with the 5-iron, applying Jeff's advice on improving wedge shots has translated into better performance across other clubs. I describe a moment of success when hitting a 168-yard shot onto the green with the 5-iron, a club that had remained unused all season. The experience highlights the broader impact of honing specific skills on overall gameplay.

(00:01) Different Learning Styles in Golf This chapter brings us into the world of golf instruction, exploring the nuances of teaching and learning the game. We, the Weekend Golf Guys, discuss how different personalities and cognitive styles impact the way people learn to play golf. Jeff Smith, a top 100 teacher, shares his experiences of working with diverse individuals, from analytical thinkers like accountants and engineers to creative minds such as artists and communicators. We emphasize the importance of tailoring teaching methods to fit the learner's mindset, whether it involves satisfying a logical, step-by-step approach or catering to a more fluid, imaginative process. By understanding these differences, we highlight how golfers can improve their game by aligning their learning style with their swing and shot visualization. (12:13) Simplifying Golf Techniques for Success This chapter focuses on the art of simplifying golf instruction to enhance learning and performance. We explore the importance of understanding individual learning styles, whether analytical or intuitive, and how adapting communication to suit these preferences can transform one's game. By emphasizing the 'what' rather than the 'how', golfers can better process and execute techniques, leading to immediate improvement. We recount examples of players who benefited from understanding the fundamental tasks of golf without overcomplicating them with technical jargon. Through real-life anecdotes, we illustrate how simple adjustments and understanding key concepts can make golf feel more approachable and enjoyable, highlighting that recreational golf need not be as challenging as often perceived. (24:45) Simplified Golf Techniques for Success This chapter explores the simplicity and effectiveness of playing golf without overthinking. We highlight the importance of being stable, comfortable, and balanced, rather than being bogged down by a checklist of techniques. Through real-life examples, we demonstrate how understanding one's stance and making small adjustments can significantly impact performance. The conversation includes insights on how the best players can fine-tune their setup to enhance their game. We emphasize the value of testing changes to see if they make a significant difference, focusing on setup adjustments rather than swing alterations. By sharing a story of a skilled player who struggled due to incorrect ball positioning, we illustrate how minor tweaks can lead to major improvements in consistency and shot quality. Ultimately, we stress the importance of simplifying thoughts and maintaining a natural approach to achieve better results on the golf course. (39:46) Immediate Solutions in Golf Practice This chapter focuses on the unexpected ease with which improvements can be made when pain is alleviated, challenging the assumption that some issues require long-term solutions. We explore the idea that sports, while seemingly simple at a recreational level, demand dedication and practice to achieve high-level performance. By setting aside time for consistent practice and incorporating fun into routines, athletes can refine their skills. Additionally, we reflect on the importance of not rushing through seasonal celebrations, advocating for the appreciation of Thanksgiving before transitioning into Christmas festivities. This sentiment underscores the need to be mindful and present in the moment, both in life and in sports practice. (44:23) Gift Ideas for Golf Enthusiasts This chapter offers crucial advice for holiday shopping for golfers, emphasizing that buying a golf club as a gift should be approached with caution. We stress the importance of avoiding purchasing a club unless the recipient has specified exactly what they want. Instead, consider giving a gift certificate, allowing the golfer to get fitted for their equipment, ensuring a perfect match. Additionally, we remind you not to overthink the game of golf itself—just swing and aim to improve with each round. Our tips are designed to enhance your golfing experience and gift-giving success this holiday season.

He emphasizes the importance of fundamentals, proper warm-up techniques, and the significance of grip and setup in achieving a consistent golf swing. In today's episode, I'm sharing stories and learning lessons - both on and off the course - that have shaped who and where I am today. Specifically, I'll share 13 of the most impactful quotes and questions that have helped guide me over the past 20 years.  Below is a list of the quotes I discuss in the episode. But for added context, stories, and action steps, make sure you listen to this episode.  Start listening. Heads-up: I updated my Instagram tag to @thegolfhypnotherapist.  P.S. If you're interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on (and off) the course, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.  Quotes and Questions Shared: It's important to know where you're going than to get there quickly. Do not mistake activity for achievement. Don't be intimidated by what you don't know. That can be your greatest strength and ensure that you do things differently from everyone else. If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others. Asking for help accelerates results. Action alleviates anxiety. Information alone isn't enough. You still have to do the work.  The results you are looking for are in the work you are avoiding You can't change unless you change If you want what the five percent have you must be willing to do what the 95 percent are not.  You need to know what you're willing to give up (and what you're not). What're the best doing that you're not? What're the best NOT doing that you are? What's your ‘why'? Key Points: It's crucial to know where you're going rather than rushing to get there. Constant action can lead to counterproductive results. Embrace what you don't know as a strength. Collaboration can lead to greater success than going alone. Asking for help is not a weakness; it accelerates results. Action is a powerful antidote to anxiety. Information alone won't lead to change; action is necessary. The results you seek often lie in the work you avoid. Personal change is essential for achieving different results. Understanding what you're willing to sacrifice is key to reaching your goals. Learn from the best in your field to improve your own performance. Knowing your 'why' is vital for motivation and perseverance. Key Quotes: “Don't be intimidated by what you don't know. See this lack of knowledge as an opportunity and a sign to get curious. Leverage this naivety as one of your greatest strengths to make sure that you do things differently.” “The results you are looking for lie in the work you are avoiding.” “What are the best of the best in your industry not doing that you are equally important?” “And that allowed me to start making some massive breakthroughs in my journey of introspection, reflection and awareness, learning more about who I am.” “And I find it creates an immense amount of clarity and peace, ultimately allowing you to feel and experience a sense of freedom and a surge in energy when you're incredibly clear on what you are and are not willing to give up to achieve a goal.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Today I'm sitting down with mindset coach and hypnotherapist, Paul Salter, to get his unique insights on using hypnosis to elevate your golf game. Paul defines hypnosis as “a state of deep relaxation with the intention to make positive change”. A skilled hypnotherapist can help anyone silence their inner critic, and directly connect with their subconscious mind to unlearn limiting beliefs and. This, in turn, allows new, more productive beliefs to take their place. Asked how golfers can harness the power of hypnosis to take their game to the next level, Paul reminds us that “there is no shortage of mental and emotional hazards on the course.” Coming up against those hazards triggers negative self-talk, which naturally nurtures self-destructive behaviors that ruin your chances at a great, fun round. To golfers struggling with emotional control, Paul demonstrates how hypnosis can significantly boost performance and align you with your best self. Paul goes on to explain how to cultivate a winning mindset, create confidence on demand, enhance emotional resiliency, and effortlessly find flow and fun out on the course. As a bonus, we also touch on finding success both as a golfer and as a parent–at the same time! About Paul SalterHaving personally coached over 2,500 clients, Paul Salter is an expert in helping you get out of your own way by stopping self-sabotage at the source. With an extensive background working with elite Collegiate, Professional, and Olympic athletes as a Sports Dietitian, his unique coaching system leverages 15 years of coaching with an emphasis on hypnosis, subconscious reprogramming, mindset shift training, and proven strategies to help you unstuck yourself. Donald Trump has another reason to thank the Secret Service. Sunday, he was at his golf club in Florida when he had to stop playing before the 6th hole. That's because his protection detail spotted the barrel of a rifle sticking out of a fence. While the would be shooter didn't get a chance to open fire, the Secret Service certainly did. The suspect  managed to speed away in a car, but was arrested a short time later. Trump walked away injury free. The FBI says this is an “apparent attempted assassination” and they are investigating. In fresh post debate election polling, the GOP fight to flip the Senate is struggling. This is truly one of the most fascinating conversations I've had, and I know you'll find it valuable and enjoy it.  In today's episode, you'll learn more about the mental and emotional challenges of playing in high-pressure tournaments - and how to overcome them, how to integrate a practice of acknowledgment and acceptance to accelerate results, as well as why having a pre-shot routine really matters (and the unknown benefits it provides). Get your pencils ready and start listening.  More About Josh Josh Nichols is a Golf Psychology Coach, and has been playing competitive amateur golfer for over 20 years. Josh run's his own business, Foundations Mental Performance, where he works with individuals all over the world on their golf psychology as a way to help them play better golf and get more enjoyment out of the game. Host of The Mental Golf Show Author of The Mental Regrip Newsletter Twitter/X: @joshlukenichols Instagram: joshlukenichols Key Takeaways: Acknowledging and accepting mistakes is crucial in moving on from poor performances. Focusing on what is important in the present moment helps to stay mentally resilient. Understanding and managing emotions is key to maintaining a positive mindset in golf. A strong pre-shot routine and commitment to the target can improve performance. Mindset and mental resilience play a significant role in golf success. It's normal to feel frustration or anger after a poor shot in golf. Suppressing these emotions can lead to more trouble down the road. Allow yourself a moment to feel the emotions and then move on. Don't try to ignore or suppress them. The pre-shot routine is important for helping players feel confident and present. It should focus on getting freed up, accepting the results, and picking a good target. The details of the pre-shot routine don't matter as much as the overall purpose. It doesn't have to be the same every time, but it should help you accomplish your mental goals. Having a plan and being flexible with it is key in golf. Accepting and embracing the emotions that come with playing can help players be more present and perform better. Key Quotes: "Mistakes are normal. Mistakes are human." "Acceptance and saying, 'I, any shot could be a bad golf shot.'" "What's important to me now? What's relevant now?" "That emotion is a normal human response. It's okay, it's normal, and kind of circling back to what you said earlier, it's the repression of those emotions that lead to more trouble down the road." "I think working through it, however long it takes. I would never say you're not allowed to feel it, but I also wouldn't say you need to stop feeling it after 10 seconds." "The pre-shot routine is to get you freed up, to get you feeling confident, which is to say, 'This ball could go anywhere and I'll be okay.'" Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. (00:01) Golf Rules and Friendly Matches This segment features a lively discussion on some proposed changes to golf rules that could benefit recreational players. John Ashton and Jeff Smith talk about the controversial idea of not having to play out of a divot in the fairway, suggesting it should be considered ground under repair until the grass grows back. They also humorously propose a rule where losing a ball should only cost a player $5 without an additional stroke penalty, especially in non-competitive games. Jeff brings up an interesting twist on handling out-of-bounds shots with the concept of a "brovisional," allowing players to drop a ball near the out-of-bounds area to speed up play. Throughout, they balance their suggestions with considerations for both friendly and competitive matches, aiming to make the game more enjoyable for weekend golfers. (09:59) Rules and Etiquette in Golf This segment unpacks the controversial USGA rule regarding teeing a ball outside of the tee markers. We explore the implications of the rule, which states that doing so incurs a one-stroke penalty but allows the ball to be teed up anywhere else on the course. We debate whether this could lead to players exploiting the rule by teeing up right next to the hole for easy birdies or eagles, and consider the potential chaos this could cause in professional tournaments like the US Open. Additionally, we touch on how strict adherence to certain golf rules can sometimes make the game less enjoyable for amateurs, and clarify the rule about accidental ball movement during a practice swing. (23:25) Common Rule-Breaking in Golf This segment explores the often informal and flexible nature of golf rules in casual play versus the strict adherence required in tournament settings. We highlight how common practices like mulligans, gimmies, and taking liberties with ball placement are not officially recognized but are frequently used by casual players to speed up the game or ensure a better lie. In contrast, we discuss the importance of strict rule enforcement in competitive play, where players and parents closely monitor ball positions to prevent any unfair advantage. We also touch on the need for players and their support teams to be knowledgeable about the rules to maintain fairness, particularly in junior tournaments, where some may try to exploit the rules. Overall, we examine the cultural differences between casual and competitive golf and the impact of these practices on the game. (34:02) Improving Golf Skills With Training Grips This segment delves into the rules of golf, focusing on those that may need revision or could enhance the game if altered. We explore the benefits of training grips, which help beginners achieve proper hand placement and see immediate success, making the game more enjoyable and less frustrating. By discussing a potential tiered system for training grips, we envision how this could cultivate a generation of skilled golfers who learn to compete effectively. Additionally, we touch on the issues of parents interfering in junior golf tournaments, highlighting the need for fair play and proper rule enforcement to foster genuine skill development. (42:36) Value and Controversy of Golf Rules This segmentexplores the significance of adhering to the rules in golf and life, emphasizing the integrity and character-building that come from facing challenges head-on rather than taking shortcuts. We discuss the value of playing by the official rules, even when they lead to difficult situations, as a metaphor for dealing with life's hardships without resorting to dishonesty. We also touch on the debate between those who strictly follow the rules and those who play more casually, highlighting the importance of a balanced perspective. Ultimately, we agree that while some rules might seem unnecessary, they collectively contribute to a fair and enjoyable game.
