October is one of those months that's packed with themes and activities. Three of those are Hillsboro Arts Month, HillsDOer Month, and the Annual Hillsboro Wishing Tree. Our Featured Project is Recycled Bottle Cap Art at Quatama Elementary School! Since the spring of 2021, students at Quatama Elementary School have been collecting bottle caps of various sizes to use for a school-wide art project that is nearly complete. Quatama has long been known for combining art and environmental sustainability, and their Recycled Bottle Cap mural project is a perfect example of those efforts. Inspired by a grant the school won from the Captain Planet Foundation to install a Learning Garden, Sheila O'Leary - first grade teacher, Green Team Leader, and Master Recycler - came up with the mural project as a way to involve all students in beautifying the garden with recycled art. Classes came up with designs, painted display boards, and placed and affixed the bottle caps to the boards with screws. Nineteen murals were installed in August by O'Leary and her husband. There's just one mural left to create and install - the Quatama “Q!” Look for that final piece this fall. There will be no school on Friday, October 7th for a licensed non-contract day. School will resume for all students on Monday, October 10th. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Join us as we welcome Christina Stevens to the Coach Cafe! Christina has a fascinating story of her time with Mother Teresa and the lessons of love and expansion she received. Christina was told by Mother Teresa, "God will write through you." Her mind-expanding adventure may prod you to recognize your own life’s calling, and that will lead you to the most powerful and transformative place in the cosmos ~ love. Christina Stevens is an award-winning filmmaker, public speaker, global environmental activist and author of Love: The Saint and the Seeker. Her belief that storytelling is inspiration for social change puts her on the leading edge of a new wave of global thought, speaking regularly at the United Nations on topics ranging from expanding consciousness to youth empowerment to solutions for global sustainability and happiness. Recipient of the Venice Film Festival’s coveted Gold Lion, numerous Clios, NY Art Directors’ and International Broadcasting Awards, Christina presently serves on the Special Projects Committee of the Directors’ Guild of America and on the Board of Directors of Ted Turner’s Captain Planet Foundation. Find her at: Website: www.christinastevens.co, Twitter: @thecalltoLOVE, Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/LOVE.TheSaintandtheSeeker
This journey to LOVE: THE SAINT AND THE SEEKER began in 1992 at the Rio+20 Summit. "As l learned more about the environment and the health of the planet, I got more active. In June 2012, I was part of a 40,000 person delegation of parliamentarians, mayors, UN officials, CEO's and civil society leaders, more than 50 heads of state and close to 500 ministers for the Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development. 700 commitments for $513 billion were pledged to build a sustainable future for the planet earth. While at the summit, I spoke of my search for a land that was doing it right; a sustainable global model. Many years earlier, I found myself called to the Kingdom of Bhutan. I feel in love with an ancient land of Kings and Queens, beloved by their people." Christina Stevens also serves on the Board of Directors of Ted Turner's Captain Planet Foundation whose mission is to give the next generation of environmental stewards an active understanding and love for the natural world in which they live. Its unique program of funding and support of hands-on environmental projects is designed to encourage innovative initiatives that inspire and empower youth around the world as they work individually and collectively creating environmental solutions in their homes, schools and communities. Much like her journey to meet and film Mother Teresa, big dreams start small, such as being more green and adopting more sustainable practices in one's life. Yet no change can come about without a vision. That vision needs passion to ignite it and action to bring it into reality. Sometimes merely focusing on an idea, thinking it through and sharing it gives it life, power and momentum.
The Captain Planet Foundation is turning 20 years old this year. Join us as we discuss the mission of the Captain Planet Foundation which is to fund and support hands-on, environmental projects for children and youths. Their objective is to encourage innovative programs that empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities. Through environmental education, the Captain Planet Foundation believes that children can achieve a better understanding and appreciation for the world in which they live.
