Mormon Stories - LDS

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2023 197:01

Dallin Seely from YouTube channel @TheDashleys grew up as a multigenerational Mormon. When he was seven years old, his father passed away from stomach cancer. Despite this tragedy, the church provided a lot of support to him and his family. The early death of his father leads Dallin to experience intense scrupulosity as he worries that he will never see his father again in heaven if he isn't "worthy" according to LDS Standards. A strict Bishop exacerbates Dallin's scrupulosity but is somewhat alleviated when a new bishop tells him that his worthiness was not determined by others. Dallin went on a mission for the church and had a mix of positive and negative experiences. When he came home from his mission, he was encouraged to get married, but he continued to have doubts about the church's teachings, such as the priesthood ban for black members.  Dallin felt the Holy Ghost told him to marry a certain woman, but he falls in love with Ashley, another faithful woman but who seems a bit less "proper" to Dallin for things like expressing humor through sarcasm. Dallin follows his own heart and marries Ashley anway. The couple deals with the church's inherent sexism, including in the temple and the teaching of “the patriarchal order” in the Mormon church. Continuous marriage struggles lead them to seek therapy. This led to the healthiest time in their marriage, as they were able to have emotional intimacy and talk about their feelings, including Ashley's feelings about General Conferences and sexism. They did not want to teach their daughter to feel inferior to men. They also talk about embracing their true selves and raising their children in a way that eliminates guilt and fear. They describe their understanding of the brain and how therapists aim to change relationships to thoughts and feelings, and not be enslaved by them. What kind of mother do moralistic narratives around motherhood centre, and who do they exclude as a corollary to that? 11:11:20- What is maternormativity? How has the notion of motherhood been romanticised in Indian society, and how does it get linked to notions of the nation and morality?15:10:10- How is voluntary non-motherhood treated in society, and does the choice to not be a mother actually enable more freedom and autonomy for women?19:18:08- What are the challenges that voluntary non-mothers face in society? What does it mean to emphasise being ‘childfree' rather than the negative connotations that come with the idea of being childless? 24:32:22- What socio-economic and gender dynamics play out in an unmarried couple's abortion decision-making process in India and how does shame and stigma shape a man's involvement in his partner's abortion? 31:12:24- What is the context behind a lot of early marriages, where women voluntarily elope and marry their partners? Why are punitive legal responses harmful in such cases?

Stacy is a remarkable 12-grade student at Daraja who hopes to be an architectural engineer one day. She tells how she believes in destiny and that she was meant to do great things and change her small community where girls like her are still forced into early marriages. In fact, Stacy's father had already received the dowry payment for her arranged wedding to an older man when she ran away from home. Soon after she heard of Daraja, applied and her life has never been the same. Jenni comes from a family of eight children and is the first woman in her family to go to university. Jason comes from a family of five, and his passion is education. When Jason and Jenni Doherty – educators from the Bay Area – visited Kenya in 2006, they were struck by the degree that gender determined opportunity. For families living in deep poverty, access to education was already limited, but sons were still far more likely to attend secondary school than daughters. Girls were being left behind. Thus, they started Daraja Academy.Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but without the means to continue their education. The academy provides shelter, food, healthcare, and counseling services so students may focus on their academic and personal potential without the everyday barriers they would otherwise face. Their groundbreaking educational model has generated a community of students filled with intellectual curiosity and a hunger to learn. Anita ByegonWhat is it like for girls growing up with a sense of shame about the normal biological functioning of their body?  And how do they cope without the availability of the feminine sanitary supplies we take for granted in the United States?Anita started her own enterprise to sew reusable sanitary supplies for the women in Bomet County.  Any donations sent here will support her efforts in providing employment to local residents, boosting the local economy and providing reusable sanitary supplies, which last for three years, to women in the Kisii area.Anita Byegon shares stories of growing up in Kenya.  She was fortunate to have parents who didn't marry her off in the 8th grade as happened to some of her friends.  She was able to get a university education and a good job.  She explained that many girls in Kenya drop out of school because they don't have the sanitary supplies they need when they have their period.  Many families have to choose between food and maxi-pads.  Naturally they choose food.  There is little knowledge and tremendous shame around the menstrual cycle.  Girls have to stay home and are too embarrassed to say why they can't go to school. In many cases, girls don't know what is happening to their bodies when they have their first period.  Anita talks about what that is like and relates the sad story of a girl who committed suicide the day she began menstruating.  Anita also relates the story of the father of 3 teenage girls who, because of the cultural shame around menstruation, had to be educated on the need for sanitary supplies.  After his conversation with Anita, he said that in all the years of viewing the family list of items for him to buy at the store, he had never seen sanitary supplies.  He honestly had no idea and wondered what his wife and daughters had done for all those years. After some years of a successful career in the city, Anita felt the desire to return to her hometown and give back.  She tells about her work with 100 Humanitarians International and Days for Girls.
