Dr. Beth Rom-Rymer's distinguished career includes groundbreaking work with survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence advocacy, and forensic geriatrics. Unleash Your Leadership Superpowers Bishop Warner H. Brown is a retired bishop of The United Methodist Church, serving from 2000 to 2016. He is currently serving as an interim bishop of the Sierra Leone Episcopal Area in the West Africa Central Conference. From 2014 to 2016, Bishop Brown was the President of the Council of Bishops. ------------------------ Bishop Brown was born and raised as an only child in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Ida and Warner Brown. At the age of thirteen, while reading the New Testament, he felt a call to serve. He began preaching as a youth and was encouraged to continue doing so. As a young adult, he attended the University of Maryland, (B.A. in Sociology, 1969.) He also graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC with a Master of Divinity degree. In 1973 Warner was ordained deacon in the Baltimore Annual Conference by Bishop James K. Mathews. Yet his movement west had already begun with a pastoral appointment in the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference as both the pastor of a church and Director of Bethany House Ministries in Pittsburgh, a social service ministry for two housing projects. While serving in western Pennsylvania, he was ordained elder in 1975 by Bishop Roy C. Nichols. In 1979, he answered a national search for an associate conference staff position in the California-Nevada Conference and transferred there. Once in California, it was only six months later that he was asked to serve as Conference Council Director. From this role of program and administrative oversight for the Conference, Warner was appointed just four years later to the Superintendency of the Golden Gate District, the richly diverse area including San Francisco and several rural and suburban counties along the Pacific Coast. Four years after that, he was given the charge of the Taylor Memorial UMC in Oakland, CA. While serving this significant congregation, the community was then assaulted by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and two years later the holocaust of fires in the Oakland hills. As chairperson of the Oakland Inter-religious Network for responding to this disaster, Warner led the community's ecumenical disaster response. Throughout these years, Warner has been active in the social justice ministries and programs of those communities and church connections where he has been appointed. To list but a sampling: Volunteer Police Chaplain, Trustee of the Glide Foundation, vice-chair of the Community Advisory Commission for Alameda County Medical Center, member of the Governing Board of United Way for Kern County, a member of the. Board of Directors for the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, recipient of the 1996 Outstanding Leadership and Service Award for Emergency Response Ministries, given by UMCOR, and recipient of a 1998 Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Warner's leadership in the church has included service as a delegate to General Conference twice, member of the General Commission on Religion and Race, a faculty member for New DS/CCD training, Harry Hoosier Member of and twice the host for the National Black Methodists for Church Renewal, chair of the Board of Missions in California-Nevada Annual Conference as well as numerous other conference boards and agencies, adjunct consultant to the Alban Institute, and a Wesley Seminary Distinguished Alumni. Following a successful eleven-year pastorate in Oakland, Warner was given a new challenge as Senior Pastor of the predominantly white yet multi-ethnic First UMC of Bakersfield, CA. Only two years into this pastorate, he was nominated and endorsed by his conference for the episcopacy: at the Western Jurisdiction Conference Sessions in Casper, Wyoming, and in July of 2000 he was elected to the episcopacy on the 19th ballot and assigned to the Denver Area. He retired in July 2016. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Alzheimer's Expert Stephen G Post Ph.D. guide for Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers - Dignity for deeply forgetful people: How Caregivers Can Meet the Challenges of Alzheimer's Disease. In Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People: How Caregivers Can Meet the Challenges of Alzheimer's Disease, Stephen G. Post Ph.D., recipient of the Alzheimer's Association Distinguished Service Award, shifts the focus from finding a cure for Alzheimer's to seeing and connecting with the whole person—their core personality, preferences, emotions, creativity, and capacity for joy—despite the limitations of dementia. An advocate for "deeply forgetful people" since the early 1990s, Post teaches caregivers and professionals how to notice the self-identity that always remains and how to communicate effectively. "We are not in any essential way very different from them," Post drives home, "unless we choose to overvalue linear rationality and independence, overlook their many other human qualities, and pretend that we are not all ultimately vulnerable and interdependent." With a powerful endorsement from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the book title says it all: Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People. Post avoids the word "dementia" because it is a negative term, exclusively about the decline from a former mental state that invites oft-heard negative metaphors such as "gone, husk, shell, absent." Instead, the Post prefers the term "deeply forgetful people" as a language of inclusion, placing us all on a continuum of a community of human dignity. We talk about Thirty onset symptoms Age-related forgivenessThe best diet to keep Alzheimer's awayExerciseOver two hundred causes of dementiaAssisted suicideCreating a bio sketch of patientProtractive causes of Alzheimer's STEPHEN G. POST, Ph.D., is Director of the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics at Stony Brook University Renaissance School of Medicine. He also serves as a Family, Population, and Preventative Medicine professor and Head of the Division of Medicine in Society. He is anelected Member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of Alzheimer's Disease International and one of only three recipients of the Alzheimer's Association Distinguished Service Award. His first book, The Moral Challenge of Alzheimer's Disease (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2000), was hailed as a "medical classic of the century" by the British Medical Journal. He has been featured internationally in the media, including The Daily Show. Post received the United States Congress Certificate of Special Recognition "In Recognition of Outstanding Achievement" (28 November 2012). In addition, he shared the Pioneer Medal for Outstanding Leadership in HealthCare with Dr. Edmund D. Pellegrino, MD (2012). www.StephenGPost.com

Most of us agree that Leadership is really important, yet so few leaders actually manage to reach a level of success that does them, or their people justice. The everyday pressures take over and people start to act before they think. It's a very common problem, however, thankfully it is one that can be resolved with some focus and dedication, that ultimately leads to good habits forming and taking over from the pressured reactions. It takes time and dedication to reach this point, but the good news is there are a lot of ways to do this, and they can be tailored to your style and abilities. It's just a matter of making it a priority in your own self learning, or making it available and supported for your people. After all, great leaders empower others to become the same, and that is what will really benefit your business and your people. In today's show I will take you through some of the core steps for achieving exceptional leadership with a particular focus on the value and skills achieved via becoming an exceptional coach. Giving you some clear direction on how you can structure your business to make sure that you can maximise the potential of your leaders. Outstanding Leadership is the glue that holds a business together, and is the key ingredient for developing and sustaining a positive and successful culture. In recent years there has been a lot of talk about empathy and authenticity in leaders. Both of these topics are now seen to be critical to being an outstanding leader. One who can engage their people and improve, and drive a rewarding and positive culture that leads to amazing business outcomes. I covered these core traits earlier this season, but they are still worth touching on here as they help a good leader become exceptional, as you need to combine several key traits to really reach that level. Throughout my career, I have helped many businesses in the area of leadership. Sadly it is a common issue that can have massive negative impacts on both the culture and people, as well as the finances. However, there are several things you can do to turn this around, and ensure you are providing your people with exceptional leaders, whilst also helping your people to become exceptional leaders themselves.

People are the powerhouse behind everything, they are an intrinsic part of your business, and your everyday life. If you can't engage and work with them in a mutually beneficial style then everything suffers. I passionately believe in not only ensuring your people are engaged, but in putting people at the centre of the work equation. Whilst the business, or product, or service, is still vitally important, it is the people that will ultimately make or break your company's success. In today's show I will take you through the steps for giving you many different ways in which you can structure your business to make sure that you can maximise the potential of your leaders. Throughout my career, I have helped many businesses in the area of leadership. Sadly it is a common issue that can have massive negative impacts on both the culture and people, as well as the finances. However, there are several things you can do to turn this around, and ensure you are providing your people with outstanding leaders, whilst also helping your people to become outstanding leaders themselves.

In its 144-year history, the Rhode Island School of Design—also known as RISD—has graduated numerous notable designers and creatives, from graphic designers Shepard Fairey and Tobias Frere-Jones, to painter Kara Walker, to cartoonist Roz Chast, to Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia. Rosanne Somerson became president of RISD in 2015 after a distinguished teaching career there (and after John Maeda's departure). We speak with her about some of the common traits of RISDs most successful graduates. We also learn what she brings from her own studio practice of furniture design to her current work, how COVID has changed higher education, and about the power of a degree in the arts. Rosanne also talks about how the overlap of disciplines leads to innovation, and the importance of staying connected to your craft. Bio An accomplished educator, academic leader and furniture designer, and a sought-after speaker and juror, President Rosanne Somerson is an advocate for the arts and the relevance of RISD's unique type of studio-based education. As the 17th president she is committed to expanding inclusion, equity and access to enhance a genuinely rich learning environment full of diverse experiences, viewpoints and talents. Somerson is also a practitioner with three decades of experience directing her own furniture design studio. Somerson has deep roots at RISD—extending back to when she was an undergraduate student at the college in the 1970s. In 1985 she returned to campus to teach furniture design, and in 1995 became the first leader of RISD's new Furniture Design department, helping to establish its strong reputation in the field. After subsequently serving in several academic leadership roles on an interim basis, Somerson emerged as the top candidate in two separate international searches, which led to her appointment as provost in 2012 and then president in 2015. An interview with Somerson is included in the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art Oral History Project and she has earned fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts along with the James Renwick Alliance Distinguished Crafts Educator Award and a 2019 Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts.
For rugby fans of a certain age, the abiding memory of David Sole is of the Scottish captain leading the team out for the 1990 Grand Slam triumph against England. Yet as well as an outstanding rugby career, that also encompassed a World Cup semi-final and a victorious Lions tour of Australia, David has built a highly successful business career. He is now Managing Partner of The School For CEOs, a senior coaching business that he set up with Patrick Macdonald, recently appointed Chair of the Institute of Directors. In this extended episode, David shares insights into his rugby and business experiences, including the importance of humility and emotional intelligence in our leaders. We also hear about his recent adventure in the world of rearing chickens, why his Grand Slam celebrations were cut short and how, for a period at Diageo, he was the biggest buyer of alcohol in the world. David was interviewed by Fraser Allen on 30 March 2021. www.allencomms.co.uk

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many challenges for post-secondary students. Despite the flexibility, support and hard work of professors to create an engaging online learning experience, the change to at-home learning has been very difficult for some students. Isolation and uncertainty have affected the mental health of numerous others. Many students lost jobs, co-op, and internship experiences in 2020, affecting their financial sustainability, career development, and progress to complete their academic programs. In short, the very important public health requirements required to protect the health and safety of the University community have limited or drastically changed many aspects of the student experience that are so fundamental to students' growth, development, and sense of connection. Whether it's making new friends on campus, participating in research, conferences, club activities, or being involved in sport, the well-known pre-pandemic transformative experience has given way to something less fulfilling for many students. Most are eager to return to the robust and engaging student experience that is familiar to them – the one they have come to expect. The speaker will account for how students have been coping at the University of Lethbridge, describe what measures the university is taking to mitigate the effects on students during this pandemic, and will discuss the plans that are being developed regarding the future of the student experience in fall 2021. Speaker: Kathleen Massey Kathleen Massey is an Associate Vice-President (Students) at University of Lethbridge where she oversees the Registrar's Office, Enrolment Services and Student Services. Massey holds a Bachelor of Political Science from York University and a Master of Leadership from Royal Roads University. Focused on advancing student achievement and creating a framework that supports student success, Massey was recognized in 2014 with an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Association of Registrars of the Universities and Colleges of Canada. She also won a 2003 Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for Outstanding Leadership in Education. I am elated to bring this episode of Cue To Cue with Founder/ Artistic and Managing Director of The Musical Stage Company, Mitchell Marcus! Mitchell has become an influencer in the Toronto MusicTheatre scene and has been quite successful in a medium where many theatre companies don’t make it past their first season and I have been dying to have a conversation to hear his thoughts on creativity, entrepreneurship and the place of musical theatre in today's ever-shifting arts landscape. WISDOM: When I asked Mitchell what advice he would give someone who is thinking of starting a theatre company he said, “don’t”, with a laugh and continued to say, if you feel you must go through with it then find the Gap. How are you going to differentiate yourself from every theatre company out there? Do you need to do a show or become a theatre company because that is a totally different undertaking. In this Episode: What is missing from the Canadian musical theatre scene How to embrace the art of fundraising and get people to support your idea What he believes holds artists back from creating and how you can overcome it How to discern the right path for yourself A Little about Mitchell: Mitchell is the founder and Artistic & Managing Director of The Musical Stage Company – Canada’s leading and largest not-for-profit musical theatre company. Over fourteen years, The Musical Stage Company (previously Acting Up Stage Company) productions have been recognized with 61 Dora Award nominations, 11 Dora Awards and 12 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards and programming partnerships have been built with Mirvish, Canadian Stage, AGO, TIFF, Massey Hall, Obsidian Theatre Company, and the Regent Park School of Music amongst others. Outside of The Musical Stage Company, Mitchell was the Associate Producer for the inaugural six years of Luminato, producing over 100 productions for one-million attendees annually. Ep 245 Guest: Dr. Ali Tehrani PhD Headline: Defeating Cancer Welcome to Conversations That Matter. This episode is brought to you by Odlum Brown, a client-focused investment firm that starts client relationships with straightforward conversations focused on you, your aspirations, and your investment priorities. Odlum Brown has been a supporter of Conversations That Matter from the day we started the show. Their only condition was that we provide a non-biased conversation with people from all sides of all sorts of issues. Of course, we couldn't produce this show without the support of Oh Boy Productions. If you're looking to produce a cast, be it video or a podcast, I suggest you reach out to Oh Boy. They can help you produce it, and they can help you build your audience. And we also need your support. Please pledge your dollar per show at patreon.com/conversationsthatmatter because those dollars add up and play an important role in helping us produce the show. Now to this week's episode. It’s a great big audacious goal – defeating cancer, that is. But that’s exactly what the team at Vancouver-based Zymeworks plans to do. The biotech company has developed protein therapeutics for the treatment of cancer and for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. They’re also developing a new delivery system and research process. The process and the next-generation therapeutics they’ve created allow for the targeting of differentiated biological pathways that lead to internal, partnered therapies. Those targeting platforms have names like Azymetric platform and Zymelink Conjugation Platform and Cytotoxins. The Azymetric platform, for example, spontaneously assembles antibodies into a single molecule that can easily adapt to rapidly screen, target and sequence combinations of bispecific activities which significantly reduce drug development timelines. The company’s lead product ZW25 is currently being elevated to Phase 2 clinical trials targeting two distinct domains of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, or HER2 – a protein that promotes the growth of cancer cells. The company was founded in 2003 and is working in partnership with global pharmaceutical companies such as Merck, Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson and others. In addition to taking on cancer, Zymeworks is playing a fundamental role is ensuring Vancouver becomes a global centre of excellence in biotech. The company is led by Dr Ali Therani, who holds degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts and has a Doctoral degree in Microbiology and Immunology from UBC. Not only is he a brilliant scientist but he also has an impressive track record in leadership, having been awarded the UBC Faculty of Science Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership in 2002. Dr Tehrani says, “We’ve done a really good job of educating brilliant scientists and then watched them leave Canada. I want to give them a reason to come home.” We invited Dr Ali Tehrani to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the biotechnical innovations that are being developed at Zymeworks and his company’s role in turning Vancouver into a centre of excellence and influence in scientific research. "The early Anthropocene is where I leave my life behind and you begin yours. You cannot know what I would give so you did not live out your days on this trajectory of climate instability, mass uncertainty, and breath taking extinction across the community of life. I pray that you are able to bring adaptation from distress. What I know, is that Anthropocene citizens who continue Holocene habits, doom their children. Nonetheless, the world has not stopped being beautiful, so claim the beauty that is. Beauty is it's own resistance." Larry L.
