In her own words: I study how cells communicate with each other. For all multicellular organisms, cell-cell communication is an essential process in coordinating development and interacting with the environment. More specifically, I study how cells in plant roots communicate with each other under agriculturally challenging conditions such as low nutrients or heavy metal contamination. The biggest gap between potential and achieved crop yield is because of bad soils, so this is a real problem in feeding our ever growing global population.
