EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. Join us as we discuss Film Noir!  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. EPISODE 47 - “Laird Cregar (Star of the Month) ” - 08/05/2024 With his sad, dark eyes, hulking frame, and aristocratic speech, actor LAIRD CREGAR often played the complex villain tortured by a sinister past or an unrequited love that turns into an obsession. No one played characters with suppressed anguish, a tortured soul, or darkness lingering beneath the surface better than he did. While he only made 16 films in a period of five years, he is unforgettable. His desire to be thin was his achilles heel that turned tragic. This week join us as we take a deep dive into the short life and career of this amazing actor.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Laird Cregar: A Hollywood Tragedy (2017), by Gregory William Mank; “Atlas With A Grin,” by Fredda Dudley, December 1941, Screenland magazine; “Setbacks To Fame,” by Dorothy B.Haas, June 1942, Silver Screen magazine; “Bold, Bad, (Bluffing) Cregar,” by Barbara Berch, January 1945, Screenland magazine; “Ripping Tales: Laird Cregar: The Forgotten Ripper,” by Kevin G. On Tuesday February 22nd, 1944 The Bob Hope Show took to the air with a special broadcast for the Coast Guard. The guest was Carole Landis. Hope's radio cast from this era is his most famous. Along with Jerry Colona and songstress Frances Langford, the squeaky, man-crazed Vera Vague, voiced by Barbara Jo Allen was tremendous. Blanche Stewart and Elvia Allman played high-society nitwits Brenda and Cobina, modeled after real-life socialites Brenda Frazier and Cobina Wright Jr. Wright filed suit but settled, Hope remembered, when he invited her on the show as a guest. Wendell Niles was often Hope's announcer for Pepsodent.

Actress CAROLE LANDIS was a rising star in the 1940s, but her bright light was short-lived. She came from a troubled background and learned early that her looks and sex appeal were valuable commodities that could help her dreams of fame come true. She scratched and clawed her way to Hollywood stardom only to find the dream was hollow. Her quest for love led her to all the wrong men. Her ill-fated love affair with the very-married star REX HARRISON drove her to her untimely death at age 29. Ruled a suicide at the time, years later, Landis' family thinks otherwise. Today, she serves as a cautionary tale about the dark side of the Hollywood dream. SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Carole Landis: A Tragic Life In Hollywood (2005), by E.J. Duffy's Tavern is an American radio situation comedy that ran for a decade on several networks (CBS, 1941–42; NBC-Blue Network, 1942–44; and NBC, 1944–51), concluding with the December 28, 1951, broadcast. The program often featured celebrity guest stars but always hooked them around the misadventures of Archie, the tavern's manager, portrayed by Ed Gardner. Archie was prone to involvement in get-rich-quick schemes and romantic missteps, and constantly communicated with malaprops and mixed metaphors. Gardner had performed the character of Archie, talking about Duffy's Tavern, as early as November 9, 1939, when he appeared on NBC's Good News of 1940 Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Carole Landis referred to her role in Turnabout (1940) as the only time she had 'more than an even chance to demonstrate ability rather than matter'. In a screwball picture where husband and wife swap bodies, Carole moves differently and takes up space. Carole's performance makes a farce of the decorous feminine ideal. Joseph Breen and the Legion of Decency gave Hal Roach so much grief over the production that the studio nearly shut down for good.

I talked to Carole Landis biographer Eric Gans. We talked her life, her husbands, her free attitude towards sex, her career , her traveling all over to entertain the troops during World War 2. Finally we got into her affair with Rex Harrison. She thought he was the ONE and love of her life, only one problem..he was married and had no intention of divorcing his wife. On the last night of her life Carole had dinner with Rex and its believed that Rex told her he was going to be in NYC for a long time doing the Broadway Show Anne Of A Thousand Days. What they spoke about we will never really know. Did he tell her they were over?? What is known is that Carole took enough Seconal to kill herself four times over. She left notes. One for mom and one for Rex. Rex was the first one to discover Caroles body sadly laid out in her bathroom. She was clutching rosary beads and the notes. Some cops got a hold of the note for Rex and Rex and his wife paid 500 dollars for it. Its a sad story of a very beautiful woman with many demons. Thanks so much to Eric. He was fabulous.. Carole Landis was a gifted comedienne, a decent singer, and - once she dyed her natural brown hair blonde - perhaps the most luminous beauty in movies of the early 1940s. Plus, she was one of the most dedicated USO performers of WWII, and her elopement with an Air Force pilot on her travels became the inspiration for a book, movie and long running tabloid narrative. But then Landis fell into an affair with Rex Harrison - and this affair turned out to be Landis’ last. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
