A modern reinvention of fear, faith, and the price of peace In this episode of Rewind, Tony revisits ABC's reboot of V — the ambitious, effects‑driven reimagining of Kenneth Johnson's iconic 1983 miniseries. The modern series once again chronicles the arrival of an alien species who promise peace, healing, and technological miracles… while secretly plotting humanity's downfall. Through conversations with stars Elizabeth Mitchell and Morena Baccarin, along with executive producers Scott Rosenbaum and Steve Pearlman, this episode explores how the creative team rebuilt V for a new era of political anxiety, media manipulation, and global distrust. The cast — including Morris Chestnut and Charles Mesure — brought emotional depth to a story where every alliance is fragile and every promise from the Visitors hides a darker truth. SAVE 17% ON PLUS

John Singleton was twenty-three when he wrote Boyz N the Hood and twenty-four when it made him the first Black filmmaker and youngest person ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. Released in 1991, the film drew from Singleton's own upbringing in South Central Los Angeles to deliver an unflinching portrait of Black life there, launched the careers of Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut, and Nia Long, and established Singleton as one of the most important voices in American cinema. Over the next three decades he directed Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Shaft, and Four Brothers, and served as a producer on Hustle & Flow and the FX series Snowfall, which was still in production when he died of a stroke in 2019 at age fifty-one.The Life of Singleton: From Boyz N the Hood to Snowfall by journalist Thomas Golianopoulos draws on nearly 400 original interviews to document Singleton's full arc — his years as a driven film student at USC, his rapid ascent in Hollywood, his complicated personal life, and his final years. Published by Andscape Books in 2025, the biography traces how Singleton's commitment to putting authentic Black stories on screen shaped an industry and inspired generations of filmmakers. Mike talks with Golianopoulos about his four years reporting the book and the life of Hollywood's first self-proclaimed hip-hop director.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Buckle up for a whirlwind ride on today's episode where it's just me and Eddie holding the fort while Nicole's away. We start off with some heart-wrenching news about the untimely passing of Michelle Trachtenberg, a beloved figure from many of our childhood screens, stirring memories and what-ifs about the Buffy revival and the irreplaceable void left behind. We share in the somberness but transition smoothly to a lighter topic—casting news that's got everyone buzzing: John Lithgow stepping into the wise shoes of Dumbledore for HBO's new Harry Potter series! It's a mix of shock, awe, and a bit of speculative tea spilling whether this casting choice is a slight nod of defiance toward the ever-controversial J.K. Rowling. The main course of our chat? CBS's ambitious attempt at a Sherlock-free Watson series starring Morris Chestnut. We dive deep into the premise, dissect the choices that diverge from the classics, and debate if Watson can truly hold his own in a Sherlock-less world. Eddie and I are tackling all these juicy topics with a dash of humor, candid views, and lots of wild speculations.
