Everyone is here and this episode is JAM PACKED!! Of course we have to kick off with THAT episode of The Last of Us, then we talk Sinners, Andor, Companion, The Wedding Banquet, and The Room Next Door. The show kicks off with the second episode of season 2 of The Last of Us. The show does exactly what it's intended to do and strikes up a strong debate among the gang. Without spoiling the discussion, we'll just say, it's all a matter of perspective... After leaving Lauren on the sidelines for much of the TLOU talk, she takes over and discusses The Wedding Banquet, a queer Asian rom-com with a good amount of depth to it. It has a great cast and is a ton of fun and a great example of big strides in representation. Next up, Kevin and Andrew bully their way back in to talk about the 3 episode premier of Andor. It's a lot of show, but because it moves at a very deliberate pac, it feels less daunting than the opening section of the show. Suffice it to say, this show is off to a solid start yet again. In a moment that Kevin has been waiting for almost as much as he's been waiting for The Last of Us discussion, Andrew talks about the new Ryan Coogler film, Sinners. The review is glowing and this film is tearing up the box office. It can't come to streaming fast enough for Kevin! Lauren jumps back in and covers the film, The Room Next Door. You wouldn't be alone if you looked at the advertising for this film and thought it was a lesbian love story, but it's actually a beautiful tale of friendship, caring, and loss. It's a sad but excellent film and generates an interesting philosophical discussion among the gang. Before he can stop himself, Kevin blurts out a quick review of the film Companion. It's sort of like Megan meets Dark Mirror meets a Knives Out film. It's a lot of fun and everyone plays their part, just don't expect to have your mind blown on this one. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. Join us as we discuss Film Noir!  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. This Thursday the Hermetic Hour will present a lecture by Poke Runyon on Dark Mirror Evocation and Angelic Invocation that was first delivered at a symposium sponsored by Paul Clark's Fraternity of the Hidden Light in 2002. This talk will reveal the philosophy, the techniques, and the effects related to these "grand operations" of ceremonial magick: how to summon spirits, and call down angels. Poke will discuss this subject in depth, and give the psychological, spiritual and traditional background behind our most dynamic form of modern urban shamanism. This talk will be directed toward those sincerely interested in this subject. It will be dense with facts, techniques and practical instructions. It may be too heavy for parlor room 'fluffy bunnies,' but if you want to outgrow your fluff, tune in and find out how the boys and girls back in the dim-lit, blue-painted garages do it. Good Magick! Basil Copper, born on February 5, 1924, in London, and passing away on April 3, 2013, was an English writer who initially pursued a career in journalism and newspaper editing before transitioning to full-time authorship in 1970. Beyond his literary pursuits, Copper cultivated diverse interests, including swimming, gardening, travel, sailing, and collecting historic films. Notably, he established the Tunbridge Wells Vintage Film Society and actively participated in esteemed film organizations in London. Basil Copper spent a significant portion of his life in Sevenoaks, Kent, and he was survived by his wife Annie, with whom he entered matrimony in 1960. Basil Copper's literary journey embarked with his inaugural short story, "The Curse," published at the age of 14. His professionally published debut, "The Spider," emerged in the Fifth Pan Book of Horror Stories in 1964. Venturing into novels, Copper made his mark with the Mike Faraday series, beginning with "The Dark Mirror" in 1966. Widely recognized for his series of Solar Pons stories, paying homage to Sherlock Holmes, Copper's association with editor August Derleth resulted in publications through Arkham House. Among his notable works are "Necropolis" (1980), a crossover between Victorian Gothic and detective fiction, and "The Great White Space" (1975), a novel influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and Lovecraft. Copper's macabre tales, including "The Academy of Pain" and "Beyond the Reef," underscored his mastery in horror fiction. His significant contributions earned him a Locus Award nomination in 1981, and in 2009, "Basil Copper: A Life in Books," a biographical work, received the British Fantasy Award for Best Non-Fiction. Basil Copper's literary impact endures, resonating through the realms of horror and detective fiction. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On Ron's Amazing Stories this time we have some new stuff mixed with the old. We have three listener stories that are tied together in a pretty unique way. I think you are going to be amazed at just how synergistic your stories can be at times. Then we have a 50's noir story that when published was way ahead of its time. All in all I think you are going to enjoy it. So press that play button and let's get started. Program note: I am publishing the podcast a day early this week due to some inclement weather that is said to be coming in. I wanted to be safe rather than sorry. Featured Story - The Dark Mirror Our featured story comes from the OTR series Screen Directors Playhouse. After a murder, Lt. Stevenson questions the dead man's girlfriend. Sensing that she's keeping a secret, he confronts her at home, where he meets her identical twin sister. Both women appear exactly alike, sometimes even posing as each other. However, when a twin expert analyzes the sisters, he finds that one twin is normal, and the other is psychotic -- but which one? The story is titled The Dark Mirror, and it stars Olivia de Havilland playing the role of both sisters. It first aired March 31, 1950. Other Stories Include: The Collector's Item, The Sleeping Dragon, I Am The Thing, I Am The Thing Too, Out Of Body At Grandma's House,  I jumped out of my Skin, and The Dark Mirror. Elizabeth and John talk with Brandeis linguistic anthropologist Janet McIntosh about the language of US alt-right movements. Janet's current book project on language in the military has prompted thoughts about the "implausible deniability" of "Let's Go Brandon"--a phrase that "mocks the idea we have to mince words." The three of them unpack the "regimentation" of the phrase, the way it rubs off on associated signs, and discusses what drill sergeants on Parris Island really do say. They speculates on the creepy, Dark Mirror-esque similarity between the deciphering of "Q-drops" and academic critique. Turning back to her work on basic training, Janet unpacks the power of "semiotic callousing." This week, the guys manage to keep it tight(ish). With Pete out, there's only Kevin and the Andy's to make this machine go. After last weeks marathon, the guys were happy to keep it tight. Andrew starts it off with a discussion that heavily centers on one if his favorite genre's, Anime. Of course he covers Attack on Titan, but he also covers what he does and doesn't love in the genre in general. It's a cool conversation for anyone that loves anime or might just have a passing interest, as there are a few core anime philosophies covered here. Andy then starts his portion off with a discussion of Dark Mirror which triggers Andrew's love for that show, too. We are really starting to get into the heart of who Andrew is, it seems... But back to Andy. He next talks about having watched some DCEU films which is never a good idea on this show. Kevin, having watched very little uses Andy's DCEU topic to discuss the latest reports coming from the Warner/Discovery merger and the plans for the future of the DCEU. While it's a dead horse that has beaten so many times, the guys just come after it again. With no Pete, the episode comes in under 2 hours and is much more palatable, though you still have to deal with Kevin. If you make it through this one, please leave a like or a comment and subscribe if you enjoyed it. We love the company. If you did like it, please note that we do apologize in advance. Pete will be back next week...
