"MARY BETH HUGHES - CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 3/03/2025 For those of you who don't know the charms of MARY BETH HUGHES, when she was under contract at MGM, she was dubbed "the poor man's LANA TURNER." It was a rather unfair assessment since MGM gave Lana all the plum roles, and Mary Beth got her hand-me-downs. But still, Mary Beth had great comic chops, and no one played bitchy, hard-boiled blondes as well as she. Despite her beauty and talent, she never managed to get out of B-pictures. She did have small parts in great films like The Women (1939) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). She played the good girl as often as she played the bad girl, but when she played bad....you were in for a treat. Her pouty lips, snappy dialogue, and petulant attitude lit up many a lackluster production. This week, we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Ken reflects on his diverse experiences, from his early days in the 90s punk band '30 Seconds Over Tokyo' to his extensive comedy career, which includes two comedy albums and a successful podcast 'TV Guidance Counselor.'He humorously shares early concert anecdotes, including winning tickets through radio contests and memorable shows like the Aerosmith concert and a unique collaboration between David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails. The discussion reveals Ken's passion for live performances and his impact on the entertainment industry over two decades, underscoring his transition from music to comedy and podcasting. Prompted by a story Charles shares where Michael Stipe asked Charles for his Batman shirt after an REM show, Ken and Charles do a deep dive into the portrayal of Joker by Cesar Romero in the original Batman series. They explore Romero's unique take on the character, the impact it had on the show's success, and how it influenced perceptions of the Joker in pop culture. The episode also dives into remarkable concert stories, such as The Descendants' comeback tour and intense punk shows at Boston's Rathskeller, portrayed through vivid recollections of chaotic and energetic performances. There's arguably no superhero in existence that has been reimagined, redefined, or reinterpreted more than Batman.  No matter how many times he's been rebooted, audiences are always willing to come back to Gotham City's greatest defender.  With so much Bat content out there, there's plenty to dissect, analyze, and of course, rank!  This podcast is dedicated to a surgical evaluation of Batman's history, with a focus on ranking several topics in the world of Batman, among other classic Bat themes and characters. Join host Daniel Cohen, Pop Break's former Film Editor and Resident Bat-Maven, as he brings on several guests every month to share his passion for the one and only Dark Knight.  From Adam West to Robert Pattinson, no bat stone will be left unturned.  Bottom-line: If you're a Batman fan, this is required listening. It's time for another episode of the Batman by the…uh oh.  Wait a minute.  What's happening?  Wha- “Winged freak.  Terrorizes.  Wait till they get a load of me.” That's right!  Welcome to the JOKER by the Numbers Podcast!  Grab your laughing gas, hand buzzers and pencils, because everyone's favorite clown prince of crime has taken over the feed.  You want chaos?  Today we're bringing the CHAOS!! Last year we ranked all the actors who played Batman.  With Joker: Folie à Deux upon us, we have to do it: We're ranking Jokers. Do we really need to sell this episode any more than that?  The Joker is arguably one of the biggest villains in all of pop culture the last few decades.  The character has two academy awards on his mantle.  Whether it's pure goofball in the 60s with Cesar Romero, or Joaquin Phoenix's ultra serious take in 2019's blockbuster and divisive Joker, he always brings something to the table to discuss, and could be the biggest reason why Batman as a property has stood the test of time.  His never-ending battle with the Joker is the cornerstone of the character.  They said it best in a little movie called The Dark Knight… “I think you and I are destined to do this forever.” With a topic like this, you know we had to go BIG.  Joining Daniel on this laughing gas filled journey is podcasting director of the pop break, Alex Marcus, along with an all-star panel of alums and newcomers. Fresh off his appearance in the Definitive Batman Draft, Kris Ingersoll of the Media/Lit podcast makes his return, along with Amanda Rivas, host of the Anime x Pop podcast, and of course the flagship podcast of the pop break, the Socially Distanced Podcast.  And making their debuts on the Batman, excuse me, the Joker by the Numbers Podcast, Alex's former co-host of the Cinema Joes Podcast, Noah Franc, and professional wrestler, Brandon Vice. The panel dive into everything Joker.  Can Daniel get through the Jared Leto segment without going on a 2016 Suicide Squad rant? (probably not).  Did the Joaquin Phoenix discussion last a long time? (probably).  And…who won the title of #1 ranked Joker?  We won't dare spoil that for you, but let's just say it was a nail-biter. What are you waiting for?  This is an episode where we rank Jokers.  LISTEN RIGHT NOW!

May 27) with this ENCORE of a rare two-part installment featuring not one, but TWO of the actresses to play Catwoman during the run of the classic 1966 “Batman” series (along with Julie Newmar). In these episodes: Lee looks back on her reign as Miss America, impersonates Ed Wynn and threatens (promises?) to discipline Gilbert. Next up, Julie reminisces about working with everyone from Michael Rennie to Chad & Jeremy and favors us with her favorite Catwoman catchphrase. Also, Julie feuds with Jim Belushi, Lee hops a flight with J. Fred Muggs and Buddy Ebsen runs afoul of Shirley Temple. PLUS: “The Eddie Cantor Story”! The return of Billy Barty! Gilbert channels Sydney Greenstreet! And the ongoing mystery of Cesar Romero! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Once again, the monthly new release show has to be expanded into a two-part extravaganza. 2023 is seriously shaping up to be a wonderful year for new music, as evidence not only by tonight’s show but all of our new release broadcasts so far this year. As always, we have some tracks by “friends” of the show (Rob Moss, Dave Strong, Robbie Quine, Friends of Cesar Romero and others), some longtime faves (The Hillbilly Moon Explosion, Laura Jane Grace, Keith Richards, etc.) and quite a few relative newcomers (Shadow Show, Mala Vista, Faz Waltz, and so much more). But this episode also includes a couple of tunes by a record that could quite possibly end up being my favorite record of the year, the self-titled debut album by The Sleeveens on Dirtnap Records. This is the dirty garage/punk record I’ve been crdaving for quite some time, and I hope you folks all love it as much as I do.  And once again I have a late entry to the “Teenage Kicks” cover series, thanks to a fellow DJ who sent me a version set to be released in April by Canadian Music Hall of Famer Lee Aaron. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller start their discussion of the Adam West Batman features with 1966's Batman: The Movie. Stars Adam West, Burt Ward, Cesar Romero, and Lee Meriwether. Released between the first two seasons of the Batman TV show, Batman: The Movie features Batman and Robin against a supervillain team-up of the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and the Catwoman. Although it's a bit overstuffed with plot, there's good setpieces here. A subplot with Batman falling for Catwoman undercover in a Russian guise as Kitka has some nice heat to it. Some episodes of the Batman TV show are better than this film, some are worse. It's not going to knock your socks off, but iconic scenes like "Bat Shark Repellant" keep up the fun. Book Vs. Movie: The Thin ManThe Dashiell Hammett Novel Vs. the 1934 Classic FilmThe Margos are looking for actors with chemistry and witty banter, so we had to dive into the fabulous world of Nick and Nora Charles and The Thin Man. What began as a feature in Redbook magazine in December 1933 turned into a best-selling novel by one of the most important writers of the 20th Century--Dashiell Hammett. We discussed Hammett when talking about The Maltese Falcon, and for several reasons, The Thin Man became his last novel. Hammett was a passionate anti-fascist who joined the Communist Party in 1937. By the 1950s, Congress investigated him before the House of Un-American Activities (HUAC), where he refused to “name names.” He went to a federal penitentiary in West Virginia and found himself impoverished afterward. His partner Lillian Hellman would go on to run his estate posthumously. The Thin Man is a story about a former New York City police officer (Nick Charles) who marries a wealthy socialite (Nora Charles) and spends his time between the city and San Francisco living as a bon vivant. One day, back in NYC, he runs into Dorothy Wynert, the daughter of a former client looking for her father.Later, we learn that his secretary (and former lover), Julia Wolf, was found murdered by his former wife, Mimi. The police think she was murdered by her gangster friend Shep Morelli. Mimi's new husband is much younger, tall, handsome, and slim (the THIN man!) There are all kinds of banter, double-crossing hijinks, and more plot holes than you can shake a stick at. The movie, directed by W. S. Van Dyke in 1934, stars William Powell & Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles and their dog, Asta. Screenwriters Albert Hackett & Francis Goodrich simplified the plot in the first six films about the couple. Powell and Loy shine with their glamorous look, which delighted audiences during the Great Depression, and would go on to be nominated for four Academy Awards (It Happened One Night swept that year.) So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? In this ep the Margos discuss:The backstory of Dashiell HammettMovies during the Great DepressionThe legacy of the movieThe cast of the 1934 film: William Powell (Nick Charles,) Myrna Loy (Nora Charles,) Maureen O'Sullivan (Dorothy Wynant,) Nat Pendleton (Lt.
