Alarmist Brewing's hilarious Gary Gulley brings an engineer's lens to brewing and nerds out about cask ales, clear hazies, and what customers really want. 01:27 Beer Myth: Are cask ales all flat? What is a cask ale, anyway? Gary explains what makes a cask ale a cask ale and the role carbonation plays in it. If you've never heard of a firkin, spile, cast breather, or cask wedge, then you'll walk away with a better understanding of them as only an engineer could provide. Plus: should you drink what's on cask while in the UK? 08:15 Alarmist Brewing Interview: Gary Gulley, owner and founder of Alarmist Brewing, shares why he's passionate about beer and how his former career as a civil engineer prepared him for a career as a full-time brewer. He talks about his experience learning about homebrewing while working at a nuclear power plant, Coors Party Balls, and how his growing appreciation for beer led him to found Alarmist. Gary also shares the story of how his Le Jus became the first-ever Hazy IPA to win a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival and how Alarmist developed other award-winning beers including Pantsless, Bronze Medal Winner for American Pale Ale in 2020, and Midwest Royalty, Bronze Medal Winner for American Style Lager in 2021 and 2022. After sampling some beers, Gary explains the difference between two-row and six-row malts and how they impact the “grainy” flavor of certain beers. He also breaks down the difference between pale ales, American pales, and IPAs, in terms of both hops and bitterness, and what happens when you put lactose in beer. Gary and Katherine also explain why beer recipes “change all the time” and how that can sometimes lead to happy accidents in brewing. The topic of Le Jus Clear also leads to Gary explaining how he used yeast strains to make a clear hazy IPA. Plus: brewing for customers, not brewers; the seasonality of dark beers and customer demand compared to other lighter styles; and a game you should never play called “The John Wayne Hour.” 1:06:36 Beer Behavior: THC seltzers: how do they work and what does industrial hemp have to do with it? Gary breaks down how delta-9 THC works, the chemical process involved in brewing THC seltzers, and how Minnesota is paving the way for other states to brew it. 1:14:30 Today's Featured Merchandise: “Decoction: it's a lager thing” super-soft shirt, available in multiple styles and colors! Live from the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting!ACAT has become a tradition for us. We've gone every year since we launched and always look forward to it. This year's event, the 18th, was no exception. Plenty of awesome cask beers and great people. It was actually pretty packed, which was nice to see with all the negative talk about craft beer and beer festivals. In keeping with tradition we sat down with the event organizer, Owen Ogletree of Brewtopia Events. We chatted about cask ale and why you'll sometimes see "Ale, Beer, and Stout" mentioned together as though they are distinct things. (They are, or they were.) We talk about beer foam, lacing, and how fests like ACAT inspire homebrewers.Georgia Craft Brewers Guild executive director Joseph Cortez sits down with us to talk beer laws and the current bill up for consideration, knows as The FOAM Act, SB163 would provide various relief for brewers in relation to self-distribution, sales limits, franchise law, and direct donations to charities. You can view the bill here and sign a petition to show your support here. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! This episode we talk all things cask ale with Angelo Signorino of Barley's Brewing, the only brewery where you can count on getting a cask ale in Columbus. We then pivot to our British correspondent, Nick Smith, proprietor at Steam Machine Brewery in Durham UK to get his perspective on the current state of cask ale in the UK and C.A.M.R.A. (campaign for real ale).
Hey Folks! We ventured out last week to the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and spoke to a handful of really cool people. A bit of a change up from our usual ACAT shows where we typically have a few of Georgia's soon-to-be breweries. Maybe a sign of the times, but this year we didn't find anyone new in attendance. No worries, we still have some great guests. Owen Ogletree, festival organizer and owner of Brewtopia Events joins us to talk about cask ales, the festival, and beer tours. Mitch Steele of New Realm Brewing sits with us for a spell to chat more on cask ales, their 5th anniversary, and whether or not he's forming a brewers band in Georgia. Charlie Meers of Magnanimous Brewing joins us. We just met Charlie at the event but we have several mutual friends that said Charlie was cool and we needed to chat wit him. So we did. Wrapping up the show Joseph Cortez, Executive Director of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild shares some of what the Guild is up to this year and Steve Hamburg, Chicago's Cask King joins to share his love for all things cask ale. The event was awesome, the people were awesome, and the show is awesome. So much awesome.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Coffee. Beer. Food. Good Measure Pub & Brewery makes it easy to know what you're getting when you visit. Coffee. Beer. Food. emblazoned across the front of the building. The Brewery recently added food to their offerings and they share ownership, and a building, with Carrier Roasting Company. Sounds like my kind of place. Andrew Leichthammer is the owner and head brewer at Good Measure. He digs a table beer and offers several at his pub and we talk about what exactly a table beer is. We also talk cask ales. We're seeing more mentions of these lately so we discuss if this old style is the next big thing in American craft beer. Andrew's on board with it and has a beer engine on the way. Pastry peanut butter, coffee beers, and vintage ales round things out. It's a good one. Enjoy!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Our Friday: a two-mile, four-pub crawl (with a short tram ride) where we stopped in and had our choice of two cask beers at each location. We encountered three milds along the walk. The crawl happened in Portland, Oregon. Because we're podcast professionals, we recorded our thoughts at each stop. Have a listen and learn about this remarkable development.
Cask Ales and camaraderie in Athens, GA A lot has changed in craft beer in the last 25 years, and Classic City Brew Fest has been there through it all. Organizer Owen Ogletree tells us about the changes over the years and the great cause the fest supports. We've been attending this event for several years now. We always grab a few of the brewers and chat a bit about what's happening with their brewery. This year we sat down with Carey Charles from Arches Brewing for some hot lager talk. Arches is one of the first breweries in Georgia to take the bold step of being lager-focused, and they're doing a damn fine job of it. Nick Tanner and Ramsay Florence from Cherry Street Brewing join to talk about Nick's two brewpubs, crazy beer laws, and why that helped them make the choice to open a production brewery across state lines in Chattanooga, TN. Note: Chery Street's Halcyon location has some of the best fish and chips I've tried. I want some more right now. Speaking of crazy beer laws... Joseph Cortes, Executive Director of the Georgia Craft Brewers Guild, joins us as well. He was new to craft beer when he took on his role, but not new to politics. Cortes shares that the political side of beer is a crazy place to be. We learn about some of the challenges facing brewers and what's on the agenda for the Guild. Paul goes Full Monty on us by traveling to his birthplace in Jolly Olde England and drives over 1600 miles in nine days on the wrong side of the road searching for the perfect pint and best fish and chips. Next, he scores a Golden Ticket to tour a brewery held in high regard there - Timothy Taylor's. Finally he meets up with his British cousins and asks them hard hitting questions like, "What is Spotted Dick?" and "If you speak English why can't we understand you?" To make sure we aren't thrown in the Tower of London we savor the liquid gold known as Timothy Taylor's Landlord Pale Ale. That and our usual craic so have a listen while enjoying your next pint with some fish and chips. The 8 bedroom, 8 bathroom home is located next door to the world famous Yorkshire Riding School. (Courtesy photo/Michelle Halpin) Paul searched for 1627 miles for the perfect fish and chips and can say that Skipton's Woolly Sheep Inn and Miller's Fish & Chips in Haxby ranked in his top three. Please note that this is pretty close to what fish and chips should look like - light batter, fish filling under all of the batter, proper chips (steak fries is as close to what America calls them), lemon wedge, malt vinegar, mushy peas on the side (but not too mushy). (Life in 16 oz./Paul Wade) One of many samplings of the 16 beers at Rooster's Brewing Company's taproom, established in 2018 in Harrogate, had to offer in both cask and keg, can and bottle. What’s up, everybody?! It’s another brewery day today, where Alex and Ryan visit the Van Nuys brewery, Macleod Ale Brewing Company. Started by Jennifer and Alastair Boase, Macleod Ale Brewing Company has an extremely prominent Scottish feel. You’ll often catch patrons sitting on the bar stool with a traditional Scottish kilt on, sipping one of Macleod’s infamous Cask Ales. Jennifer is the Pipe Major of the Pasadena Scottish Pipes, so you’ll often hear the sounds of bagpipes floating through the fermenters. Bagpipes, kilts, and delicious cask ales all make for an incredible cultural experience. During the podcast, we’ll be trying Lost in London Oatmeal Stout, which has notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and toasted bread. This week on FDB - we learn of a woman’s way to “be more Christian,” discover that mosquitos are undercover agents of local law enforcement, discuss the idea of being well acquainted with a demon, and more! Homebrewing beer. In this episode of Brew Strong, our hosts discuss the details of preparing and serving cask ales. Cask ales differ from regular ales primarily by the manner in which they are served, that is, they are poured with low carbonation that is generally added by priming. Jamil and John discuss equipment, methods, styles and serving tips in this informative show. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
