Another Chip Time Classic! This time we break down the legendary 10K at Payton Jordan where Chris Solinsky shocked the world and was the first non-African to ever break 27 minutes in the 10K... on a record attempt set up for Galen Rupp. We then cover the similarities between Nike's division and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. "I think that's why we're running so well. We just all push each other to be the best. We realize that none of us will be the one star. We're all going to share this together. I think that's what makes it really special. They just push me to be a better athlete. I'm just glad that we're all willing to race each other all the time and push each other and break the limits of high school running." In this episode, we speak with Roisin Willis. She is a senior at Stevens Point Area High School in Wisconsin. That's the same high school that has produced track and field greats like Chris Solinsky and Suzy Favor Hamilton. Roisin is already one of the next big stars. Last year, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials when she ran 2:00.78 at the Trials of Miles NYC meet and then ended up reaching the semifinals in Eugene. The fast times continued this indoor season as she ran 2:00.06 to break the high school girls indoor 800m record. The previous record was 2:01.78 set in 2017 by Sammy Watson. She capped her indoor season with a win in the 800 at New Balance Nationals. Next year she's taking her talent to Stanford so there's plenty of excitement about that. This week's guest is Ben Eidenschink, a Wisconsin native who currently lives and trains in Boulder, Colorado. Ben recently made waves when he finished 6th overall at the 2022 U.S. Cross Country Championships as an unsponsored, relatively unheralded runner, winning the “Em ‘n Ben” co-ed scoring challenge with his girlfriend, Alicia Monson. Ben has personal bests of 13:56 for 5000m and 28:20 for 10,000m, but this was a breakout performance on the national stage and surely the start of a big 2022 season. We talked about his attitude as he races against pros, his journey from the University of Wisconsin to Colorado, and why he's not moving to the roads any time soon. We also covered lucky underwear, training with the Coffee Club, high school message board drama, and some truly-excellent quarantine shenanigans in Madison. If you didn't know Ben's name before, you better remember it now as he's not going anywhere and he's only getting better. Enjoy the conversation, don't forget to leave us a rating and a review if you enjoyed the episode, and don't forget to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and follow us on Instagram at @runyourmouthpod. On choosing the University of Wisconsin as a Wisconsin native: “Chris Solinsky grew up pretty close to where I'm from, so watching him compete and seeing these in-state guys go to Wisconsin and run really well made me want to go there as well and continue the tradition.” On arriving on the scene at U.S. XC Champs: “Not many people know who I am, and I kinda like that. To me, it's nice flying under the radar a little bit. It's motivating when I get out there and there's multiple Olympians in the field, and I'm still able to race with those guys.” On continuing to run competitively: “I'd definitely say I have unfinished business. I see that I have a lot of room left to grow and there's a lot left for me to accomplish. It might be weird to ‘normal people' who ask why I'm still running after college, but I love racing and I'm still improving. The work is paying off.”
This week Florida cross country coach and Assistant track and field coach Chris Solinsky pulls a chair up to the table. Take a listen as the former American Record holder at 10k speaks about what he learned from his trials and tribulations throughout his collegiate and professional career. As well as the drive it took Chris to stay at such an elite level. Think you can "Bring It"?
“There was consistency. There was never the breakthrough that I thought could happen. You can only control what you do. I think for the most part I did everything that I wanted to." Andrew Bumbalough is one of the OGs of the Bowerman Track Club and has been training with them since 2010. In this episode, he announces he is retiring and no longer running professionally and no longer a Nike athlete. He’s shifting his priorities and getting into coaching. On Jan. 1, he launched Highgear Running, which offers personalized coaching for runners of all levels from the mile to the marathon. You’ll hear him discuss where the name came from and what he’s hoping to accomplish there. We’ll also take a deep dive into his career from his days starting off as a soccer player in Tennessee through his consistency as one of America’s best 5K runners of the past decade. He’ll share the workout where he dropped Chris Solinsky and other fun stories like his 5th place finish at the Boston Marathon. He finishes his career with personal bests of 13:12 in the 5K and 2:10 in the marathon. It was an honor to get Andrew for his exit interview of sorts but excited for what’s to come next. “What I know is the aspect of being looked at differently because of our national heritage – in this case as Kenyan athletes who also happen to be Black in the United States of America. It’s real...One of the things that bothered me many times was that I would go and run a race and if it was a United States championship, they would say ‘Kenyan-born Sam Chelanga.’ What do you get by that? You get to tell people this is the real champion and this is not the real champion because he is Kenyan-born. My performance and my hard work go through the window.” Lots of people know of Sam from his success as a three-time NCAA cross country champion out of Liberty. He set the NCAA 10,000 meter record of 27:08.49 in the same race that Chris Solinsky broke 27 to set the American record. Those accomplishments came before he became an American citizen in 2015. It was something he wanted for a while and patiently waited out the process until it became official. As a professional, he had some success including being the alternate for the 2016 Olympics in the men’s 10,000 meters and then taking well to the roads. Then in 2018, he retired to enlist in the Army at 33 years old. It was a sudden announcement that surprised many because he was in the middle of an Olympic cycle. He explains so much behind what called him to do that along with many of the other major decisions in his life – on this podcast and also in his new book “With The Wind: Finding Victory Within.” The book will come out on July 28. You can order your copy here. More topics discussed in this episode: Why he chose to write a book, running out of poverty in Kenya, his proudest NCAA cross country title, who wins a hypothetical cross country race between the greats, Aliphine Tuliamuk's comments on track media, the decision to serve in the Army and much more... To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Chris Solinsky's 26:59 10,000-meter run, this week we dropped an extra podcast with Solinsky as the guest. Our regular podcast will come out later. By now, his 26:59 has been discussed and broken down in amazing detail -- heck, our own Jonathan Gault wrote 6,000+ words about it -- so we only spent the first 10 minutes or so of our chat with Chris talking about that. After the 26:59 talk, we spent a lot of time talking about the rest of Solinsky's magical 2010 season, during which he ran 12:56 or faster for 5,000 three times in the span of 77 days -- a feat that has only been achieved six times by any American, ever. We also got Solinsky to talk about his vision for the University of Florida as he's currently the men's and women's distance coach at Florida. Chris also told a really cool Eliud Kipchoge story. This week's podcast is brought to you by the TheFeed.com. TheFeed.com has everything you need to perform at your best and try and stay healthy. Show notes: 0:00 We talk about the 26:59 for nearly the first ten minutes 09:15 We talk about the rest of Solinsky's 2010 campaign, during which he broke 13:00 three times 23:10 Solinsky talks about the first time he broke 13:00 and tells a cool story about how Eliud Kipchoge -- whom he beat badly in the race -- was the first person to congratulate him. 26:10 Solinsky talks about dreaming big and what Jerry Schumacher has taught him about coaching in the NCAA. 33:30 Solinsky talks about what drew him to the University of Florida and his vision for the distance program 38:40 Solinsky responds to those who think his huge improvements in times in 2010 mean he was a doper 43:30 We asked Chris about how many of the greats in US distance running history -- himself, Salazar, Hall, Webb -- didn't have really long careers. Chris talks about this and reveals what he thinks his peak fitness was. Got audio feedback for the show? Fake Galen Rupp where are you? Call 844-LetsRun (844-538-7786) and hit option 7. "For me, my passion is still within running. It’s now all on, and I mean this wholeheartedly, getting the kids that I work with to experience excitement levels like that night, going under 13, winning the NCAA title or competing for a U.S. title or Olympic team. Those are the types of things that really motivate me now. It’s seeing that excitement level in the kids that I work with now. If I talk about that 10K that night or that day, it’s more anecdotal. It’s more of what I learned and what I went through." Chris Solinsky joins the show as we approach the 10-year anniversary of his 10,000-meter American record run at the 2010 Payton Jordan Invitational, where he became the first non-African to break 27 minutes for the distance. It was his debut at the distance and he managed to break Meb Keflezighi's previous record by 14 seconds. It's one of the best races to re-watch. In this episode, we'll go through that race in detail but start in his hometown of Junction City, Wisconsin. Even as a high schooler in Stevens Point, he was building an engine within and started garnering that reputation as one of the hardest-working grinders in the sport. We'll also touch on: - His recruitment and why Wisconsin initially was the last place that he wanted to attend. - How the University of Colorado missed out on Chris Solinsky… - His training philosophy and taking pieces of influence from coach Jerry Schumacher - The first sub-four mile on Wisconsin soil and the friendly rivalry with Matt Tegenkamp - Turing professional and betting on himself by choosing Nike - Advice for those who have that option and go through the process - What he believes is the best race of his career… - Having a hot hand during a season and breaking 13 minutes for 5,000m three times in one season - Clarifying his dog's role in his hamstring injury - The marathon attempt that never happened and giving it one more shot in 2014 - 2021 comeback odds and more… Related links: 2010 Payton Jordan finish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rkvd5dfwMQ Podcast with Ryan Fenton on calling Solinsky's race: http://citiusmag.com/citius-mag-podcast-ryan-fenton-flotrack/ Sports Illustrated profile: https://www.si.com/more-sports/2010/06/23/chris-solinsky ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag | instagram.com/citiusmag | facebook.com/citiusmag ▶ Connect with Chris via Email: chris@citiusmag.com | twitter.com/ChrisChavez | instagram.com/chris_j_chavez
Gordon and Kevin discuss the butterfly effect of Nick Symmonds not racing the 2015 World Championships, how Jenny Simpson’s career would have been different if she still ran the steeplechase, the idea of Drew Hunter and Noah Lyles in college and what a global championship in 2010 would have meant for Andrew Wheating and Chris Solinsky.
Real run junkies will love this episode. Ryan Fenton joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to discuss how he went from being Flotrack’s first employee in the running division to the director of global rights acquisitions and partnerships for FloSports. From 2008 to 2013, Ryan was at the heart of Flotrack’s daily digital content. Whether it was recurring video series like Run Junkie or calling high school, college and professional meets on a weekly basis, Ryan helped build Flotrack into one of the go-to media sites for running coverage. In 2012, he gave me a shot as a contributor, which led to three very awesome years where I worked alongside him, Alex Lohr and Mitch Kastoff to keep growing. I owe a lot to Ryan for his help in guiding me through the sport. On this episode, we’ll explore how he discovered Flotrack, what made him leave his job and believe in Mark Floreani’s startup site, what he loved about covering the sport, calling Chris Solinsky’s 10K American record, advice for young people wanting to get into the track media landscape and much more. Today we welcome professional runner Garrett Heath of the Brooks Beast Team. Garrett was a 9-time All-American at Standford before turning professional. Garrett won the 2014 and 2015 Edinburgh Cross Country short course races before beating Mo Farah in the world championships in 2016. We catch up with Garrett about what his plans are for the future and talk to him about a time he almost took out a rabbit in a race. How did you get your start in running? Running across the gym in kindergarten and lead to stitches in forehead Was always outdoor and active growing up Middle school my father pushed me away from football so tried cross country running You ran for a great program in high school did that help keep you interested? Was exposed to high school team while in middle school There are many successful runners who came out of Minnesota and many of them seemed to spend a lot of time cross country skiing in the winter, did you do much skiing? Did almost all skiing in winter Does keep up fitness, but grow upper body mass and lose a little in the legs You had a great career at Stanford and I’ve heard in your college career your coach had some interesting ways to work on overspeed work? Used a Vespa and attacked long bungee cord on the back and around our waist and would pull you around the track Seems crazy now, but made us run fast from 100-400 meters When did you know that you wanted to try your hand at professional running? Didn't even realize it was a thing until I was in college Junior year started thinking how it could happen Junior year went and did a few races in Europe which exposed me to it What was it like running in Europe, how was it different? Meets are like 10-hours in college while over there it is more of a spectator event and entertainment so meets are just a few hours Really physical Sounds like there is a model of how to make track and field a success with the public, why don't you think we do this in the US? Trying, some races do, some mile races College meets too long Track Town did a great job with this too First time you broke 4 minutes in the mile? At U of Washington. My brother was running at the Junior Cross Country Championships at the same time in Boulder. I was super excited and at the same time my brother was running and won the US Junior race. You are now running with Danny Mackey and Brooks Beast Team, how did that connection happen? Was running with friends, but they started joining other teams so ended up doing a lot of solo time Liked the resources they had available, much like a college team Early in your career, you focused more on the 1500, then you started with some 5ks but this year you ran a good 10k at the Payton Jordan. Where do you see yourself focusing going forward? Getting more used to the longer grinding workouts/runs Still, enjoy the 1500, but I am turning into more of a 5/10k guy Still unfinished busienss in the 5k and just starting with the 10k You have had a lot of success running longer distances in cross country, how different is it racing those bad weather cross contry races vs a controlled track race? XC you need to change your efforts a lot more like a fartlek XC races go by a lot quicker, different things to think about Track try to turn off brain If money and everything were the same would you make a living on the track, roads or xc course? Cross Country Love the team aspect even on national teams You have mentioned a few times about the mental aspect of of racing, how much time do you spend working on your mental game? The mental game is huge Need to work on it in practice Being confident in training goes along with it Not sure how much you pay attention to Let’s Run, but One of the posts from January this year asked who is most jacked Chris Solinsky vs. Garrett Heath vs. Ben True. So how much do you lift and work on strength? We did not lift in college hardly at all Most of that came from cross country skiing and trying to get rid of some of that upper body weight With Brooks and I spend 45 mins 2x a week, but more minimalist lifting than others on the team One thing a lot of casual observers of our sport may not realize is when you run for a team, it is not like running for a professional football or baseball team with a huge salary. What is that relationship like with your sponsors? Spend a lot of time in Brooks office Coming out of college was blind to how it worked Talked to a lot of agents in the day right after finished NCAA The problem was it was in 2009 downturn was not any money Really tough sport because the market is limited Also, run for Roka Sunglasses Final Surge round, 5 questions in under a minute Favorite endurance/running book? - Running with the Buffaloes Current trainers you are wearing? - Brooks Glycerin Favorite race? – Edinburgh Cross Country Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? – Chocolate Chip Pancakes Your favorite workout – Long Tempos https://www.instagram.com/garrettheath Facebook https://www.facebook.com/rungarrettrun/ Twitter https://twitter.com/_garrettheath
It was an odd week for track and field when American Ninja Warrior and Taylor Swift somehow get involved. It was also a record setting week in the sport as the Genzebe Dibaba destroyed the previous women's indoor 5,000-meter world record and Mo Farah opens his season with a casual two-mile world record. Chris Chavez, Alex Lohr and Mitch Kastoff break it all down. The NYC Half fields were announced this week with interesting entires including Chris Solinsky and Andrew Bumbalough. The guys discuss how much of a toss-up the race could shape out to be. Before closing out the show, all three hosts have a change of heart on Disney's new McFarland USA film. Listen to the latest episode of the Running Our Mouths podcast:
