The last six months for biathlete Luci Anderson have been exhilarating, to say the least. The Minnesota native entered her first biathlon race last August. Just over three months later, she was on the IBU Cup tour. A few weeks later, she was racing World Cup.Anderson joined U.S. Biathlon's Heartbeat podcast from the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Anchorage, where she was among the top U.S. athletes. It was a warmup, of sorts, for her anticipated appearances at the Ruhpolding and Antholtz World Cups.Growing up in Minnesota, she found cross country skiing through the Minnesota Youth Ski League at Theodore Wirth Park, eventually gravitating to the acclaimed Loppet Nordic Racing program. She earned All State honors in high school, before heading to the University of New Hampshire where she raced five seasons with the Wildcats – earning nine podiums including six wins. The summer before her final year competing for UNH, she discovered biathlon at a try-it camp. She tucked the idea in the back of her mind, finished her masters degree in biotech, then dusted off the concept of biathlon after graduation. She was hooked.Anderson's story is similar to those of others, like Margie Freed and Grace Castonguay. But her progress curve is quick – qualifying for the IBU Cup at October trials then quickly advancing to the World Cup after two weekends.Today, Anderson is skiing with Team Birkie and U.S. Biathlon's Project X. In her conversation with Heartbeat, she conveys a great sense of organization as she maps her plan. At the same time, she exudes confidence in herself. When the phone call came from High Performance Director Lowell Bailey that a World Cup spot was available, she quickly consulted with coaches and took on the opportunity. This episode of Heartbeat is another refreshing look at the excitement cross country athletes are finding with biathlon. Watch for Luci Anderson on the IBU World Cup tour this month.

Today on the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with American distance running legend, Bob Kennedy. Bob won two OHSAA XC State Titles, was the 1987 national junior champion in cross country, and to this day holds the OHSAA Record for 1600m at 4:05:13. He then went on to The University of Indania, where he won the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championships becoming one of a few true freshman ever to win the event. Over the ensuing years, he won many more NCAA titles. After his collegiate years, he competed at the highest level making it to the Olympics more than once. He once held the American record in the 3000 meters (7:30.84), 2 miles (8:11.59), and the 5000 meters (12:58.21). Bob is undoubtedly one of the greatest American distance runners of all time. In this conversation, Bob and I dive deep into his upbringing in the sport and the different races that are most significant to him and his career. We discuss lessons he's learned, the attributes he sees most consistently in high-performing individuals, and much more! This conversation was a ton of fun, and I really enjoyed going back in time through this remarkable time period of Bob's life. Through Bob's personal experiences and knowledge, you will gain a deeper understanding of the mental and physical components of running and how to apply them to enhance your own running journey and ultimately improve the quality of your life. Do you want foot shaped feet or shoe shaped feet? The answer lies in what you want your feet to do for you. Do you want to fit into fashionably shaped pointy shoes? Just keep doing what you're doing. Do you want pain-free feet, that can support your athletic endeavors ...feet that look like the foot you were born with....straight toes? Listen in. Who Is Dr Ray McClanahan? Dr. Ray McClanahan completed his undergraduate studies at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Next, he attended Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine), and graduated in 1995. Upon graduation, he completed a two-year podiatric, surgical residency training in Portland, Oregon, at Legacy Health Systems and Kaiser Permanente as a Podiatric Physician and Surgeon. Dr. McClanahan's practice, Northwest Foot & Ankle in Portland, Oregon, allows him to care for those who find their highest joy when in motion. His professional goal is to provide quality natural foot health services with an emphasis on sports medicine, preventative and conservative options as well as education on proper footwear. Dr. McClanahan is an active runner and athlete. In 1999, he finished 14th in the U.S. National Men's Cross-Country Championships and had a near Olympic Trials qualifying 5,000 meter mark of 13:56 in 2000. In this episode, I talk with NC State Women's Head Coach Laurie Henes. We discuss her recent team success winning the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships for the first time ever! While running is an individual sport, Coach Henes emphasizes the importance of team support, something we believe in with our clients at Rise Up Nutrition. Laurie shares some of her personal experiences running for NC State herself, winning an NCAA title before going on to run post-collegiately. We talk about how she uses her own running experiences alongside her female perspective to better understand and guide her student-athletes. Coach Henes gives us insight into the care she has for her runners, the culture and set up at NC State. Discussing the nutrition support available: sports dieticians, fuelling stations and athlete dining services, Coach Henes ensures that her student-athletes fuel well throughout the day and prevent periods of energy deficits. We speak on the importance of fueling around different practice and race times -early morning, afternoon and evening training-, avoiding fasted workouts, and using training to try new nutrition strategies to set athletes up to perform their best on race day. Laurie and I talk about intuitive eating for athletes and where that can go wrong. We discuss the role of intention and education around nutrition for peak performance, while avoiding food obsession and rigidity. Laurie explains how she helps her athletes foster healthy nutrition relationships and stay away from calorie counting and weight tracking. At NC State, Laurie focuses on function over form, reminding her athletes to look beyond the mirror and recognize the incredible things their bodies can do. From experience, Coach Henes underscores the importance of professional help and specialist treatment for those struggling with eating disorders. Great athletes come in all different shapes and sizes, and we emphasize how embracing your body at the size and shape it feels strongest at will ultimately lead to your best performances over the long-term. We touch on Laurie's time coaching her daughter, Elly Henes, to her own NCAA title and how she helped steer Elly away from the disordered eating culture so prevalent in elite sports.  Follow the NC State Wolfpack on Instagram @Wolfpack_tf_xc and Twitter @packxc Laurie Henes' Official Bio: Coach Laurie Henes is the head women's track and field and cross country coach at NC State University. Laurie Henes enters her 4th year at the helm of the NC State women's track and field program and her 30th year as a member of the NC State Track & Field staff in the 2020-21 season. Henes began her coaching career as an Assistant Coach for the Pack, before changing roles in the fall of 2016, and then in the winter of 2019, she was promoted from Associate Head Coach to Head Coach of the women's team.  An NC State graduate, Henes was an NCAA champion, a six-time All-American and a three-time All-ACC performer in track & field. Laurie represented the U.S. at the World Track & Field Championships in Sweden in 1995 after placing second in the 10,000m at the USATF National Championships, and she was a finalist at the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 10,000m. Since joining the Wolfpack coaching staff in 1992, Henes has guided NC State's female distance runners to more than 37 All-America certificates and 30 ACC titles on the track. This past cross country season, Coach Henes coached her team to win ACC's for the 6th year in a row and NCAA's for the first time in NC State program history. In that one race, the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championships, NC State had 5 All Americans and Coach Henes was named both the ACC and NCAA Division 1 Coach of the Year. In this episode, we have Sydney Palmer-Leger, Sophia Laukli, and Novie McCabe. Each is a member of the U.S. Cross Country team, and they are also all teammates at the University of Utah (UU), where they are coached by Miles Havlick and Fredrik Landstedt. Laukli and McCabe were recently named to the 2022 Olympic Team and are soon headed to Beijing, while Palmer-Leger will race in the RMISA collegiate circuit for the next few weeks before flying to Norway for the FIS Junior World Championships in Lygna. Laukli and McCabe were named to the FIS U23 World Championships, but declined their spots due to scheduling conflicts between the Olympics and the NCAA championships, which will be hosted by UU in early March. Each already accomplished in her own right, these women discuss their experiences so far as they set their sights on long-term goals for what they hope will be long careers in the sport. While each had strong performances as they progressed through high school, the trio perhaps first made their names more widely known in March 2020 when they earned a silver medal in the women's 4 x 3.3-kilometer relay at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in Oberwiesenthal, Germany with fourth teammate Kendall Kramer. This historic result improved on the 2017 bronze medal earned by a team of Julia Kern, Hannah Halvorsen, Hailey Swirbul and Katherine Ogden – not too shabby. The day before the relay, Laukli had taken 5th in the 15k mass start freestyle, a top individual result which she repeated in February 2021 by taking 5th in the 10k freestyle at U23s in Vuokatti, Finland. McCabe also has two top-10 finishes at World Juniors/U23s; she was 10th in the 15k classic in 2019, and 9th in the 15k free in 2020. Currently 19-years-old, this is Palmer-Leger's final year racing at World Juniors, and she expresses her hope for peak performances during these events. (Due to positive test results on the team and subsequent quarantines for close-contacts, Palmer-Leger and McCabe were unable to compete in the 2021 World Junior Championships.)Going further back, McCabe is the daughter of two-time Olympian Laura McCabe (‘94 and ‘98) who maintained a competitive career after having Novie and her younger sister, Dashe. Bringing Novie along both for training and to sessions she was coaching instilled a love of the sport in her daughter from infancy. Growing up in the Methow with her mother and close family friend Leslie Hall, a three time Olympian (‘88, ‘92, and ‘94), as her coaches and mentors fostered both her passion for cross country skiing and her talent, eventually leading her onto the World Cup and soon to the Olympics. (For more on the McCabe family, read this beautiful piece on integrating family into the lifestyle of a competitive skier and coach written by Laura McCabe for Enjoy Winter.) Laukli also grew up in a family with deep roots in the sport; her father is originally from Norway and raced for the University of Colorado Boulder, though she grew up in Yarmouth, Maine. With dual citizenship and family connections in Norway, Laukli has had the opportunity to train and race overseas, including some FIS and Norwegian National Championship racing in January, 2021 where Laukli finished 13th in the 15k skiathlon and 16th in the 10k freestyle. These results earned her World Cup starts, allowing her a whirlwind of international racing in the 2021 season which she had not foreseen when facing season cancellation and tight COVID-19 restrictions through the fall 2020 semester at Middlebury College. (Laukli transferred to UU in Fall 2021.)Perhaps their most noteworthy result this season, Laukli and McCabe were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the final stage of the Tour de Ski, the infamous hill climb up the Alpe Cermis. Originally from Park City, UT, Palmer-Leger was also raised in an active family, enjoying the myriad of outdoor activities available in the Park City region as a kid. Eventually, two sports moved to the forefront of Palmer-Leger's focus: cross-country skiing and mountain biking. She found success in both through high school, earning five national titles in mountain biking before deciding to focus solely on her skiing. After racing period 1 on the World Cup, Palmer-Leger headed back to Utah to race at the U.S. Cross Country Championships, where she was third in the freestyle sprint, 7th in the 20k mass start freestyle, and 6th in the 10k interval start classic; she was the top collegiate athlete in each race. Thanks for listening.

In this episode, we have Jake Adicoff and Sam Wood, calling in from Lillehammer as the duo races as athlete and guide at the Para World Championships. Jake is a visually impaired athlete from Sun Valley who grew up racing with the SVSEF cross country program and now trains with the Gold Team. He has raced at both the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi, and the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, where he won a silver medal in the 10k classic, as well as placed 4th in the classic sprint and 5th in the 20k free. Meanwhile, Sam is also a member of the SVSEF Gold Team, balancing his own training and race goals with his support of Jake this season. Sam finished in the top-10 twice in the opening SuperTour weekends this season, and was in the Top-25 in both distance races at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Soldier Hollow. (Jake also raced, independently, at U.S. Nationals While it has included career best results, this year of racing was not originally in Jake's plans. He retired from professional skiing in 2018, heading to San Francisco to work as an engineer for Uber, having graduated from Bowdoin College that spring with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. When the pandemic hit, he began to work remotely from his parents' house in Sun Valley (thinking it would be just for two weeks – remember that?) and ended up “casually” hopping into training with his friends on the Gold Team. With a few nudges from US Para Nordic and teammates like Sam, Jake began to realize he was still passionate about ski racing and quite fit again, and he began to set goals for the upcoming 2022 Paralympics. At the time of the call on Friday January 21st, Jake had already earned a World Championship gold medal in the 10k classic on Sunday the 16th, and a bronze medal in the 15k skate on Tuesday the 18th. The morning after the call, the pair raced to second place in the 1.5k classic sprint. Three races, three medals. This week made it clear that Jake is in top form and will be a medal contender in Beijing. In this conversation, we get into the dynamic of the athlete-guide partnership, as well as how being long-time friends and teammates has contributed to their success racing as a pair this season. To follow along with Jake's racing this season, you can find race recaps with athlete quotes on the US Paralympics Nordic Skiing tab on the Team USA website, or follow the team on Facebook and Instagram.A quick heads up on the audio, you'll notice a bit of crackling and some poor connection toward the end of the podcast. This week's guest is Ben Eidenschink, a Wisconsin native who currently lives and trains in Boulder, Colorado. Ben recently made waves when he finished 6th overall at the 2022 U.S. Cross Country Championships as an unsponsored, relatively unheralded runner, winning the “Em ‘n Ben” co-ed scoring challenge with his girlfriend, Alicia Monson. Ben has personal bests of 13:56 for 5000m and 28:20 for 10,000m, but this was a breakout performance on the national stage and surely the start of a big 2022 season. We talked about his attitude as he races against pros, his journey from the University of Wisconsin to Colorado, and why he's not moving to the roads any time soon. We also covered lucky underwear, training with the Coffee Club, high school message board drama, and some truly-excellent quarantine shenanigans in Madison. If you didn't know Ben's name before, you better remember it now as he's not going anywhere and he's only getting better. Enjoy the conversation, don't forget to leave us a rating and a review if you enjoyed the episode, and don't forget to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and follow us on Instagram at @runyourmouthpod. On choosing the University of Wisconsin as a Wisconsin native: “Chris Solinsky grew up pretty close to where I'm from, so watching him compete and seeing these in-state guys go to Wisconsin and run really well made me want to go there as well and continue the tradition.” On arriving on the scene at U.S. XC Champs: “Not many people know who I am, and I kinda like that. To me, it's nice flying under the radar a little bit. It's motivating when I get out there and there's multiple Olympians in the field, and I'm still able to race with those guys.” On continuing to run competitively: “I'd definitely say I have unfinished business. I see that I have a lot of room left to grow and there's a lot left for me to accomplish. It might be weird to ‘normal people' who ask why I'm still running after college, but I love racing and I'm still improving. The work is paying off.”
