The inaugural Grand Slam Track is in the books. What went right, what went wrong, and what were our thoughts? as Emmauel Wanyonyi pulled the upset over the Olympic milers Hocker, Kerr and Nuguse and picked up $100,000 as so did Grant Fisher in a controversial fashion. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone cruised to her $100,000 while at the Cherry Blossom 10 miler Taylor Roe broke the world best and was fantastic as Charles Hicks got the win on the men's side over Alex Maier who got the Americna record. Back on the podcast, full of wisdom and insights is Drew Hunter! Drew had a remarkably successful season where he PRd at every distance. He ran 3:33 in the 1500m, 13:08 in the 5k, and 27:38 in the 10k. Drew placed 4th at the US Olympic Trials in the 10k, his highest-ever finish at a US Olympic Trials. Before his professional career, he set the national indoor mile record for high school boys in 2016. He was also named the Gatorade National Cross-Country Runner of the Year in 2016. He committed to the University of Oregon on November 12, 2015, but instead decided to pursue a professional career by signing with Adidas. He then went on to co-found professional running team / brand Tinman Elite. In today's conversation, Drew takes me through his current outlook on the sport, the power of becoming a dad and how that's affected his mindset on the sport, what his next steps in sport / life are, his 2024 season, the best books he's read, what he wants to do when he's hung up the spikes, and much more! I always love my conversations with Drew as they are always thoughtful and packed to the brim with insights. Don't miss this one! Tap into the Drew Hunter Special. It's a rest day in Eugene, but Des and Kara aren't resting. They droppin' this freshy fresh recap episode like it's oh so hot. The Gs know what we talkin' about... Now, button up your pastel polos because this episode has a little bit of everything, including all of the laughs you expect and insights you can't get anywhere else. Kara starts with a behind-the-scenes description of calling races with NBC including the Snoop Dogg cameo during the men's steeplechase final. Did she play it cool or did she unleash her inner 17-year-old and lose her s**t when she met the D.O. Double G? Of course, you get recaps of all of the distance finals so far AND highlights from the sprint events, including hot takes on Grant Fisher's win, Drew Hunter's out-of-nowhere, top-4 finish, Hillary Bor's fall in the men's steeple, that holy Hocker kick from 250m, the near-photo-finish in the women's 5K, Parker Valby's boss run to potentially make the team, the bittersweet 800m final for the women, and so much more. Plus, you learn that NACAC isn't an insurance company or a duck call but actually the thing that might punch Evan Jager's ticket to the Olympics. [Can YOU say NACAC five times fast?] Then, you hear what Des and Kara thought of the 100m finals (we see you Sha'Carri, Noah, and Fred!), Noah Lyle's kit reveal, and the 16-year-old sprint phenom Quincy Wilson who might just make a relay team in Paris. This episode is everything we love about Des and Kara... listen in as your prep for the second half of the trials which starts on Thursday! We are coming to you from Eugene, Oregon at the Olympic Track Trials for this amazing episode! The main topic was on some inspiring stories from the first half of the Trials, which feels like the ultimate party of the US running world. And like most good parties, it features a lot of Snoop Dogg. We also talked about lessons from Broken Arrow, including Jim Walmsley doing the Vertical Kilometer race prior to the Western States 100, right alongside Anna Gibson racing the VK prior to the Olympic Trials 1500 meters. It's clear that we are seeing something about how this type of skill applies to all types of events, whether those events are 4 minutes or 14 hours! And this one was full of some of the greatest topics! Other topics: our initial thoughts on Oregon and Tracktown USA, getting coaching credentials at the Trials, birthday reflections, a question on salty food options for endurance events, why Broken Arrow was one of the most competitive races ever on US soil, Jade Belzberg's incredible journey for an incredible race in the 23k, Drew Hunter's gutsy 4th place in the Trials 10k, the psychology of racing in heats, why an emphasis on coaches in Olympics coverage makes David nervous, why Megan thinks it's a weak argument, a Western States preview, how this year's race will unfold, the incredible tech of the Coros Arm Band HR monitor, UTMB's new prize money announcement, and hot takes. The episode finishes with a meditation inspired by our spiritual teacher, Ludacris. May all of your days and all of your drinks be crunk. We love you all! HUZZAH! Trucks! “It's better than going out and doing a 10K tempo on Pre's Trail and coming away with nothing. There's no money for a tempo run. I'll go do it in a track stadium with a bunch of fast guys, taper a little bit, come away with a couple grand or something… I'm like, ‘It can go bad 400 in and I can just step off, I get front row seats to a 10K final and I'm already on the Olympic team.'” Conner Mantz, 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials winner, updates us on how training is going for the Paris Olympics. “That's what I was telling myself the whole time. I was just so committed to racing as hard as I can, and I was just like, ‘I think I can compete with those guys.' I had that mindset the whole race. I was like, ‘I don't care if I get fourth, I don't even care if I get second or third and don't get to go.' It was about conquering the disbelief that I've had the last few years that I could compete with those guys. So that was the plan.” Drew Hunter, 4th place finisher in the U.S. Olympic Trials 10,000m final, reflects on his performance last night, shares about the support he's received since racing, what he's learned since becoming a dad, and gives a few updates on Tinman Elite. “Occasionally we do a really hard workout, but most of the time we just try to stay even-keeled. Two months of consistent training is better than three weeks with two hard workouts but then you're taking a week off because you're dinged up or sore… We really thought, let's run the 5K pretty hard, I don't necessarily know if [Elle St. Pierre] ran all-out when she ran 14:32, but we wanted to see what it felt like to run a hard 1500 a week later, because [Prefontaine Classic] was going to be hard.” Team New Balance Boston coach Mark Coogan joins the show after a strong first day of competition for his team. It has been thoroughly covered in an interview with Drew Hunter on the @Tinman YouTube channel. For further context, I highly recommend watching the full interview https://youtu.be/vzuh2nT1F3U

Today on the podcast, I gladly welcome Drew Hunter. This is a podcast I've wanted to make happen since the origins of the podcast. Drew became the eighth-ever high schooler in high school to break the illustrious four-minute barrier clocking 3:58.25 (a national record). Drew then signed with Adidas out of high school and founded Tinman Elite, where he has pushed forward the sport of running on and off the track. Drew currently holds PRs of 3:34.86 (1500m), 3:54.8 (mile), 7:39.85 (3k), and 13:17.55 (5k). He has also won two US national titles. Off the track, Drew is a recent husband, father, coach, and occasional Youtube star (more Cooking With Drew, please, Max). In this conversation, Drew and I dive deep into his career and many subjects surrounding his life. Drew is a perspicacious and ebullient speaker, and I enjoyed this conversation immensely. I know our discussion will positively impact you, and I hope you'll take the time to listen to it. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it. If you really enjoy the podcast, consider sharing it on social media to spread the word! What a weekend. Yared Nuguse started it off by running 7:28.24, an American record for 3000m and then a few hours later Woody Kincaid shocked the nation and Joe Klecker by running 12:51.61, an American record at 5000m. The next day Katelyn Tuohy broke the NCAA record in the mile. Plus a sneaky good performance by Hobbs Kessler, a win and interesting comments from Drew Hunter, a world best by Keely Hodgkinson, Mo Farah news, a nice win by Ajee' Wilson, and another great meet this weekend in Boston. What a weekend! The American record attempt in the mile by Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker may have come up short, but everything else exceeded expectations. Grant Fisher ran 12:53 for 5,000m with the "B" heat being won in 13:05, Gabriella DeBues-Stafford ran 14:31 and Elise Cranny 14:33 to crus the North American and American records. A virtual unknown, the Atlanta Track Club's Shane Streich got the American record at 1,000m, Yared Nuguse the collegiate 3000m record, not to mention the high school 800 record by Roisin Willis. We break it all down, talk about the doping scandal in figure skating and the retirement of convicted doper and World Champ Justin Gatlin.
