The Running Pod

Rich Morrell and Lucy Jones sit down to unpack an absolutely wild weekend of athletics, starting with the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, where records were falling left, right, and centre. They get into Josh Hoy's ridiculous indoor 800m world record, how it actually played out, and why it felt inevitable once the pace wound up. There's also plenty of love for Hobbs Kessler, whose calm, metronomic run to a 2000m world record had everyone watching in disbelief. Add in Jake Wightman breaking the British indoor record, and it's a reminder of just how deep and competitive middle-distance running is right now.On the women's side, the chat turns to a stacked 3000m, with standout runs from Elle St. Pierre and Linden Hall, plus a wider look at the young athletes starting to mix it with the established names. Rich and Lucy also talk through why athletes like Izzy Boffey and Ellie Baker are becoming serious players in the women's 800m.To wrap things up, attention shifts to the London Marathon, with a proper look at the loaded elite fields and why the hype is more than justified this year. With records being broken, careers taking off, and races delivering every weekend, this episode captures why track and field is in such a good place right now.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-running-pod-trackstaa/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's not unreasonable to say that no one could've predicted this podium. That's not to say that Isaac Nader, Jake Wightman, and Reynold Cheruiyot aren't all medal-worthy contenders in their own rights, just that the series of circumstances that had to stack on top of one another to make this particular outcome happen was highly improbable.Without Jakob Ingebrigtsen to assume the role of pacemaker, the field hit 400 meters in a relatively pedestrian 59.45, and each successive second that the tempo lagged injected a little extra variability into the last lap. No one saw Kerr's untimely calf injury coming: the Scotsman is remarkably consistent in global finals, with his lowest finish of the decade being sixth in 2022. And heading into the last lap, one measly second separated the top 12 contenders.Nader and Wightman are both known for their footspeed, and the race was set up perfectly for them to take advantage. In particular, Wightman has looked like a rejuvenated runner throughout these championships after missing the last two British teams with injuries and changing coaches in 2024. Nader won the Oslo Dream Mile earlier this season and has finished near the front of a few other Diamond Leagues, but this was still only the second global final of his career and doesn't have the shiny PBs of some of his competitors. But that didn't matter on the homestretch, when Niels Laros looked vulnerable for the first time in months, eventually fading to fifth, and Nader swung into lane three for the first time after riding the rail to power past both Cheruiyots and nip Wightman at the line by 0.02 seconds. Even though this is an event where fans often feel passionately about their favorite athlete, we can all appreciate the fact that, when the dust settled, the crazy ride was fun for everyone.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Isaac Nader | @isaacnader on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________PRESENTED BY ASICSFor the third consecutive year, CITIUS MAG is proud to partner with ASICS for our global championship coverage. As crazy as it sounds, middle-distance runner Jake Wightman doesn't really enjoy the act of going for a run. Sounds like a bit of a problem when you're an elite athlete with his sights set on an Olympic gold this summer. As a talented and sporty kid he was spotted for his potential and realised he needed to grab the opportunity - and the responsibility - that comes with it. Fortunately what he does love though is racing and the 2022 1500m World Champion offers a fascinating insight into what it's like to be in the mix of a crowded final, where mind games, tactics and decision-making become the crucial difference between glory and despair. He also tells us what it's like to have your Dad commentate on your big races, the importance of feeling his friends' support and how the thrill of winning keeps him motivated as he prepares for the biggest summer of his life. I'm excited to share the recording from my live show in New York City this past Saturday with reigning world 1500m champion Jake Wightman of Great Britain. This past summer Jake pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year, taking down Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen to capture his first world title. Jake, who is 28 years old and a native of Scotland, is also a Commonwealth Games and European Championships medalist, as well as a three-time champion at the 5th Avenue Mile in New York.In this conversation, we talked about the world 1500m final and the tactics he used to take the win. Jake told me about what it was like to come off the high of that world title and still having to race in the Commonwealth Games and European Championships in the weeks that came after it. We discussed pressure as a privilege, what it's like going into races now as a favorite rather than an underdog, and how he's learned to appreciate his accomplishments over the years. Jake also talked about growing up as the son of two accomplished runners, being coached by his dad and the dynamics of their relationship, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by:— New Balance. The new FuelCell SC Elite v3 is going to be the shoe that I race the Boston Marathon in next April.
