South African ratepayers are in despair as mayoral musical chairs and coalition dramas have led to chaotic governance in many a metro. In this interview with BizNews, Marius Roodt of the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) says it is time for governance in the metros to be taken seriously. He dissects the removal of the Democratic Alliance's Cilliers Brink as Mayor of Tshwane, as well as ActionSA's working arrangement with the African National Congress in Joburg. However, he also explains why stability in city governance is not dependent on Government of National Unity agreements being binding on lower levels of governments. “I don't think it's all that healthy for the DA and ANC to sort of become some kind of mega party which has big majorities across the country.” Meanwhile, Roodt shares some of the recommendations the IRR is currently developing for the stabilisation of municipal government.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba speaks to BizNews about the “dirty political environment” in which Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink of the Democratic Alliance was ousted. He says the DA leadership at national level has been doing “everything possible to even threaten” the African National Congress to do the deal with them in Tshwane. “…the DA is still trying everything in their books, including actually using blackmail…and…according to the ANC, they find this to really be totally unacceptable because when they formed the GNU, there were no discussions around municipalities.” Mashaba adds: “Perhaps they even still succeed because we've got 14 days to form a new government. If the ANC is going to concede to blackmail, it's up to them.” Meanwhile, Mashaba is pushing for Deputy Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya to replace Brink. “All the credits that Cilliers Brink is seen to be doing, actually, it's a result of our deputy mayor.” If everything goes according to plan, he does, however have this warning for the ANC: “You want to work with us, you work with us at your own risk if ever you want to continue corruption because no one is going to be protected from corruption, including ActionSA members.”

The Democratic Alliance Mayor of Tshwane, Cilliers Brink, was today toppled in a Vote of No Confidence. In his reaction, Neil De Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement, says this is part of the strategy of African National Congress Premier Panyaza Lesufi. “And this, if you look at it as a stick of dynamite and you put the fuse, I will tell you today the first fuse was lit in the Joburg Metro a couple of months ago. The second one is now lit in Tshwane and I predict the third one, it's on its way to Ekurhuleni. It is my opinion, and this will have to be proved in the future, that no doubt Mr. Lesufi is putting his huge, huge card on the table for the national conference of the ANC in two years. I think you've got a faction rising.”
It is now 88 days since South Africa's Government of National Unity was formalised by appointing a multi-party national cabinet.
City of Tshwane Executive Mayor, Cilliers Brink says there has been a delay in capital spending in the metro, due to tighter controls put in place to prevent irregular and wasteful expenditure.

Tshwane's Executive Mayor, Cilliers Brink, may represent the most rational hope for reversing South Africa's prolonged decline into poverty. Brink's leadership in confronting organized labour epitomises the country's challenges in the coming years. After decades of ANC compliance and regular capitulation to increasingly unsustainable demands of trade unions, Tshwane's DA-led coalition refused to approve a R600 million wage increase to avoid further strain on an already R3 billion under-funded budget. The illegal strikers, constituting only 10% of the Metro's workforce, have resorted to criminal violence, setting a precedent that could become a test case for the entire nation. His resignation was followed by the election of former speaker Dr Murunwa Makwerela as the new mayor but his tenure was short lived after he too resigned following the faking of his insolvency rehabilitation certificate. DA mayoral candidate, Cilliers Brink explains the latest from the counsel sitting with SABC reporter Patricia Visagie.

The Democratic Alliance has given the acting national Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale a deadline of Friday to ensure former President Jacob Zuma returns to prison. The party's lawyers wrote to Thobakgale demanding that Zuma be returned back to Estcourt Correctional Centre to serve out the remainder of his sentence. This follows Monday's ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeal that Zuma's medical parole was illegal. For more on this, Elvis Presslin spoke to Cilliers Brink, National spokesperson for the DA.

Elvis Presslin spoke to DA's national spokesperson, Cilliers Brink
The DA wants the ANC investigated for systemic and calculated fraud, racketeering, corruption, looting of state coffers, and related offences spanning two decades. DA national spokesperson Cilliers Brink confirmed this in an interview with BizNews in which he expanded on the rationale informing his party's laying of criminal charges against the ANC in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act. The actions of the governing party, Brink believes, has clearly conformed to that of a “criminal enterprise”. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
President Cyril Ramaphosa says he has fulfilled his obligation to provide advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane with a fair hearing and has now decided to suspend her with immediate effect. In a statement, the President says Mkhwebane will remain suspended until the National Assembly's section 194 process to consider her fitness to hold office has been completed. The Presidency says it has granted Mkhwebane the opportunity to make submissions which he has considered carefully. The Presidency says the Deputy Public Protector is empowered to act when the Public Protector is not able to perform her duties and any investigations that are pending or underway should not be impeded.
