The event will bring together a broad range of individuals, communities, local authorities, and organisations, all united in their efforts to address climate change. It will provide a platform for both newcomers and those already engaged in sustainability initiatives to network, share ideas, and collaborate. The aim is to strengthen Ireland's commitment to building a climate-neutral future and inspire more grassroots action to tackle the climate crisis. The conference will feature keynotes and presentations from a diverse group of speakers. Senator Malcolm Noonan, Green Party Senator, will deliver the keynote address on Restoring Nature as a Climate Action. Robert Mooney from the Department of Environment, Climate & Communication will discuss code signing Pathways to a Carbon Neutral Ireland through the National Dialogue on Climate Action. Elina Bardram, Director for Adaptation & Resilience, Communication, and Civil Society Relations, will also be delivering a message from DG CLIMA. The conference will also feature contributions from several EU Climate Pact Ambassadors, each bringing valuable insights into different aspects of climate action. For example, Dr Lydia Cumiskey, Senior Postdoctoral Researcher at the MaREI Centre, UCC, will share creative solutions for climate resilience, focusing on co-creating change with flood-affected communities. Dr Laura Kirwan, Sustainability Lead at Nutritics, will discuss improving efficiency and sustainability in food service and how the Foodprint Tool is transforming operations. Lydia Cuminsky, Climate Pact Ambassador, highlighted the importance of local action, saying: "As an engaged researcher, the EU Climate Pact Conference is an opportunity to connect with people interacting daily with communities around climate action. "I'm looking forward to sharing creative outputs from the Creative Ireland funded BluePrint project which highlight the power of creative and artistic processes bridging arts, science and government, for amplifying the voices and lived-experiences of flood affected communities while bridging connections with policymakers and building local capacity to strengthen climate resilience." The EU Climate Pact, which is part of the European Green Deal, is a grassroots initiative aimed at uniting individuals and groups across Europe in the fight against climate change. This conference is a vital step in furthering this movement and encouraging more sustainable practices across Ireland. See more stories here. He says: “So the solutions are in leadership. It must be a two-month discussion, ensuring what leadership it is. It must be led by people who are not government. It must be led by people who don't have any interest in political occupancy and all that kind of thing. It must be led by people who are forthright and upright and then they must hold the mirror to South Africa and say, are these ones in power the kind of leaders that deserve the country. If we say yes, then we don't need an election, we continue with them…But if…we don't like them, then the answer is very clear. And then we go for an election.” Dr Lehohla warns: “..this is a monumental space that South Africa faces. It is probably the last opportunity to avoid an Armageddon.”

Former president Thabo Mbeki wants the country to convene for a national dialogue after the election to tackle what he called counterrevolution which has been making the democratic government fail since 1994. Mbeki diagnosed what has paralysed the democratic state led by the ANC since 1994 and called for an inclusive dialogue with civil society organisations, politicians, businesses, labour and others to discuss a way forward for the country. Mbeki attributed failure of the democratic government to sabotage in state-owned enterprises such as Eskom. Will there be change in the way the governing party is governing? Mbeki says they will try to change. He also touched on the country's ability to deal with unrest. The former head of state is touched by the quality leaders the liberation movement is attracting. It's something that has been on Mbeki's mind of a while. Last year he alleged deliberate attempts to make the government fail. Recently he's been consistent, saying there are people within the governing party who don't have party values but are there to steal. Last year Mbeki said there is a process to ensure the government does not succeed, referring to crime and state owned enterprises.

Govt must tighten up public procurement to fight corruption - Raymond Zondo

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo advised government to "close the taps" in public procurement to effectively fight corruption. Zondo was speaking at the National Dialogue on Anti-Corruption, in Johannesburg, where he said that corruption in the country had reached unacceptable levels, and that unless attended to, citizens would not have a country worthy to call home. He said most of the corruption in the country was in the public procurement sector, which remained vulnerable to corruption with millions of rands looted every day. "If we close the taps in public procurement, we will make a big difference in our fight against corruption," he explained. Zondo believes that if the independent and multi-disciplinary Scorpions unit had not been disbanded, there would not be high levels of corruption in South Africa. "I have a sense that if the Scorpions were not disbanded, we would not have the level of corruption that we have now in our country," he said. WHISTLEBLOWER INCENTIVISATION He noted that whistleblowers and investigative journalists had played a crucial role in the work of the Zondo Commission, highlighting from his recommendations that whistleblowers needed to be protected and incentivised. Zondo explained that while many people were critical of the recommendation to incentivise whistleblowers, he still believed that whistleblowers should get a percentage of the money recovered. He noted that the incentivisation would only apply where money was recovered based on the information disclosed by the whistleblower. Zondo said some people countered his recommendation, by arguing that people would only come forward with information for the money and not because it is the right thing to do. "…but our level of corruption is so bad that we in South Africa do not have the luxury to say we do not want the information because we have to pay. I want all the information. The critical thing is you will not get money if your disclosure did not play a critical role in recovering the money," he explained. Zondo said that citizens had to change the culture of corruption. "It might take long time, but we have to. Each and every one of us in our daily interactions, it is how we raise our children, it's at schools, it's at churches, it's everywhere. We must make sure that everyone abhors corruption, that everyone says we should have no corruption in our country," he said.

At yesterday's closing of the two-day National Dialogue on Coalition Governments at the University of the Western Cape, Deputy President Paul Mashatile called on the country to draw lessons from others and its own experiences on coalition governments. Mashatile gave examples of successful government coalitions when the  African National Congress (ANC) worked with the National Party at the national level and the IFP in KwaZulu-Natal at the dawn of democracy. Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has accused the ANC of trying to hijack the dialogue, DA chief whip, Siviwe Gwarube says it became apparent during discussions that the government was already working on its own coalition legislation. An accusation the deputy president has since denied. Bongiwe Zwane spoke to United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader, Bantu Holomisa and DA's National Spokesperson, Solly Malatsi...

The release of Patrick Zaki was some rare good human rights news from Egypt. After being sentenced to three years in jail, he was then pardoned the next day by President Abdel Fatah el-Sisi, and was able to return to Italy. Patrick had been hanging in legal limbo since 2020, when he was first arrested, and subsequently charged with “disseminating false news” and “inciting to protest”.His release was warmly welcomed by human rights defenders and lead to questions as to whether we could see more releases and presidential pardons, particularly as the work of the National Dialogue builds up. The National Dialogue was first announced by the president last year, but was then delayed, only starting work this year. It has been tasked with discussing political, economic, and social issues in Egypt. Some opposition members in Egypt are hoping that it could serve as platform to steer the country back to democracy. Others are more skeptical. This week on The New Arab Voice, we look at the case of Patrick Zaki and why he was arrested, the state of human rights in Egypt, and the National Dialogue and whether it will be able to make an impact. Joining us to discuss human rights in Egypt is Dr. Aida Seif el-Dawla, a retired professor of psychiatry, and one of four founders of the El Nadim Center for the Psychological Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture, an Egyptian independent NGO, founded in 1993.And to help us understand the National Dialogue, we speak with Mirette Mabrouk, a senior fellow and the Director of the Egypt and Horn of Africa programme at the Middle East Institute. On the 27th of April 2022, Egypt's incumbent president reactivated the presidential pardon committee, called for a national dialogue, and emphasized that it's completely normal for there to be a diverse set of opinions. As of the 30th of June 2022, only 236 political prisoners have been released, and most of whom are already widely known within the Egyptian political sphere––activists, legitimate party members––or have been on hungerstrike beforehand. With a board of trustees released two days ago, the so-called national dialogue proposed in April is set to start in a couple of days. Is it all just a political shitshow? Or the beginning of a new era? Well, one would have to wait and see how it unfolds. In this episode of Tahrir Podcast, fellow Egyptian researcher and friend Ahmed Nada joins me in a lively albeit humorous conversation on how that ought to unfold, and other alternative the Egyptian state could undertake for it to actually show goodwill, and open up political space. I argue that for that so-called dialogue to work (or to not), the Egyptian constitution must be activated, pretrial detention laws must be implemented and non-combatants should stop standing before the infamous SSP accordingly. Journalists Kelvin Lewis in Sierra Leone and Linus Kaikai in Kenya discuss how best to navigate the murky waters of ethnic politics, especially when reporting on elections. They found out that even though their countries were on opposite sides of the continent, they shared the same concerns over how political blocs play on ethnicity to win votes. Both Kenya and Sierra Leone are multi-ethnic countries where some politicians do not hesitate to manipulate voters along ethnic lines and fuel rancor using tribalism as a political tool. Kenya has an unfortunate history of post-electoral violence and Sierra Leone is gearing up for presidential elections in March 2018. Kelvin Lewis and Linus Kaikai discussed how the media in Kenya managed to navigate through such thorny issues and how Sierra Leone’s media is attempting not to fall into the trap of ethnic politics. Kelvin Lewis says that signs of tensions are surfacing and that the political contenders are alreday facing attack. “If the situation is not managed well, it might lead into serious conflict. Ethnicity and regionalism… are the bane of the our politics in Sierra Leone,”  he told RFI Conflict is not merely a word, or an abstract notion for Kelvin Lewis. As a journalist with 30 years experience, he has lived and reported through Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war (1991 – 2002) and will not accept his country spiralling into further chaos. This is one of the reason why, as the President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), he has set up a training programme for journalists on balanced political reporting and conflict sensitive reporting. The programme is opened to all journalists (six to eight hundred of them) and not only SLAJ’s 600 members. There are at least four training sessions planned. One in each of the country’s four regions, to be held in their headquarter towns. Accountability pays Linus Kaikai, general manager of NTV, Nation Television, who in a 20 year career has covered a number of Kenyan elections, says that the level of post-electoral violence in Kenya has dramatically dropped since 2007/2008 when over one thousand people died. “One of the steps that made this last election relatively peaceful was that the threat for consequences was real. For politicians, the International Criminal Court can come in. For you citizen, the local courts can come in and there will be consequences for that violence”, explains Linus Kaikai The media in Kenya also played a key role in that respect. In 2013, it successfully managed to organise debates involving all eight presidential candidates to outline their agenda. “This changed the narrative from focus on tribes and ethnic communities to focusing on issues,” says Kaikai. "It was a success in 2013 but not quite so this year in 2017 because the debates were boycotted by the incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta and the controversies surrounding other candidates." Kelvin Lewis asked Linus Kaikai how the Kenyan media helped tame down the ethnic bias that was prevalent during the 2013 general elections. “The use of ethnicity as a mobilization tool is still very much strong and alive in Kenyan politics”, Kaikai replied. "First of all, the main players rally their tribe behind [them] and then build a coalition of tribes to meet the other coalition of tribes.” Avoid associating ethnic groups with parties Linus Kaikai admits that it has been very difficult for the media in Kenya to break this pattern. “[We] tried to avoid references to [naming] the communities and stick to the party names. For example, media deliberately avoid making references to those communities or tribes rallied around the Jubilee party [of President Uhuru Kenyatta], [same for] the National Super Alliance, NASA, associated with Raila Odinga and the coalition of tribes associated with that bloc.” The other step undertaken by Kenyan media to stay clear of ethnic tensions was to also avoid reproducing speeches in local languages addressed towards a particular community. “When, for example, the President is speaking in his native language to his community, that will not find its way to television, newspapers or radio because this is considered sometimes offending to other communities.” An efficient media regulatory body The Communications Authority of Kenya is another contributing factor explains Linus Kaikai. “Oversight has improved greatly and that has improved responsibility [from] presenters and producers. Our regulatory body is keeping an eye on broadcasts and print media to ensure that some of this hate speech in 2007 that ended up in the International Criminal Court do not arise again," he said. But Kaikai warns that the danger still remains when politicians use their native languages on community radio stations as they then tend to drop their guards. In Sierra Leone, however, Kelvin Lewis deplores that the country’s Independent Media Commission is not as impartial as it should be and he says it is one of the main reason why he has set up this training programme for journalists ahead of the 2018 elections. “The media outlets associated with the ruling party get away with a lot of things. Those on the other side, if they do same, will be held responsible very quickly”, Lewis said. Legal actions may be an option but then again Kelvin Lewis remains skeptical: “You wonder how the courts will rule against the ruling part. It is almost not likely.” Radio is the preferred media among Sierra Leoneans with 70 different stations scattered across the country even though there are some 120 newspapers circulating, mostly in the capital Freetown. In  Kenya TV is the most popular media. There are only 3 local television stations in Sierra Leone with two of them being privately owned. Kryo is the language most used by the radio stations in Sierra Leone with Mende being more dominant in the East and Temne in the North. The challenge resides in ensuring that the community radios broadcasting in the local languages focus on issues affecting the country and not on ethnicity or ethnic concerns. “We have a programme now called National Dialogue and we are urging the press to go along with it,” says Kelvin Lewis. The two journalists also discussed transfer of power in their respective countries and how the political divide is linked to geography and ethnic groups. One of Kelvin’s burning question for his East African collegue, Linus, was the latter’s last name, Kaikai, a typically Sierra Leonean surname. IAP2 USA President Leah Jaramillo talks about the IAP2's National Dialogue initiative, its focus and objectives, its origins, where it will happen and its culmination at the IAP2 North American Conference in September. We seem to live in times in which the volume has been turned up and the listening has stopped. In the wake of the US election, opposing camps have built polarized world views based on conflicting arrays of alternative facts. The members of the US chapter of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) experience the disfunction of public discourse on a daily basis in their work promoting and facilitation public engagement with government. Now, IAP2 USA is organizing a National Dialogue among its members and interested community groups to discuss the current environment for public participation. The dialogue will take the form of meetings across the summer culminating in a discussion at the IAP2's North American Conference in Denver in September. In this episode of Inside P2, IAP2 US President Leah Jaramilo talks to Joseph Thornley about this initiative. One more thing I neglected to ask Leah in the interview who had contributed to the development of the concept. She send me a note after our interview to let me now that, "The IAP2 USA Board members who were involved in developing this as a program for national distribution are Kit Cole, Cathy Smith and Wendy Green Lowe. Thanks are also due to IAP2 USA Executive Manager, Amelia Shaw & Staff for all their assistance and to Lewis Michaelson who co-facilitated the pilot event in San Diego with Wendy Green Lowe." Thanks all round to these folks for making this initiative happen. Report Back on the First National Dialogue with the Black Left Unity Network (BLUN) and USHRN November 3, 2011 The need for a national call was rooted in the following assumption: With the emergence of the Occupy Wall Street movement with developing organizational expressions in various cities across the country, members of BLUN have taken the position that it is important to develop a process for addressing the questions that have quickly surfaced related to the political character of this movement and the role and participation of Black, Latino and Native forces. BLUN along with the Labor working group of the US Human Rights Network, hosted a first national dialogue call on Thursday, October 20, at 3pm EST. The call was organized around a series of questions addressed through a conceptual frame and a series of local reports. Framing perspectives were offered by Saladin Muhammad (BLUN) and Christine Williams, Local 100 TWU) highlighting the anti-capitalist and movement building potential of OWS. The role progressive labor and social movement forces are playing in the movement was discussed. Through a series of local reports from San Francisco/Oakland (Clarence Thomas, ILWU, Local 10), New York (Christine Williams, Local 100 TWU), New Orleans (organizer, Endesha) and Raleigh-Durham (Ashaki Binta, BLUN, Black Workers for Justice). Two of the five call questions were highlighted in the reports-- 1) How can the Black left align with the anti-capitalist sentiment and energy of the OWS forces to increase the existing fight-backs in the labor movement and the Black communities? And, 2) Since labor is an important social force in the capitalist system, how might OWS influence and help to mobilize the character and content of labor’s involvement in the Occupy movement? The following core themes emerged: 1. There is an uneven, even missing presence of Black folk in the Occupy movement. Those issues most impacting Black and Brown communities need greater visibility and presence. 2. There is a need to go into Black communities where struggles around Occupy issues have been going on for years. How to “go into” is a key question. What connections need to be made? How? 3. Related to number two is the need to work simultaneously: connect to struggles of the Black masses while linking with progressive OWS forces –white, often male and young. This is not going to be simple while working to specifically deal with the pressing issues confronting the Black masses. 4. A key question is how we can connect multiple energies from multiple sites and forces to build an overall strategy of social transformation? 5. Successes seem to come from specific targets such as marches on the banks. Banks are the local Wall Street presence in many communities. How will this fight connect with broader anti-capitalist energies? 6. Need to find out more about Occupy the Hood and Occupy Hip Hop movements and the recently emergent Hip Hop decolonize movement and work through engagement with these emerging forces. Comments/Analysis: History has demonstrated that the particular relationship of social forces that can lead to a vast improvement in the ability of a resistance movement to advance its interests cannot be pre-determined. Yet, certain events can emerge that can suggest new possibilities for developing and implementing strategies that can strengthen progressive forces while simultaneously taking advantage of the weaknesses of the ruling elements. In penetrating the the pervasive ideological mystification of Capitalism imposed on the people of this country by the collusion of the State, the corporate media and the financial and corporate rulers, the OWS movement provided a moment, however temporary, and a framework for building a deeper understanding of capitalism’s inherent contradictions. But with all of its progressive potential, the discussion from our national dialogue clearly surfaced the uneven and contradictory nature of this movement. It became clear from our conversation that if OWS can serve as a catalytic force for a new convergence of progressive forces, the interests and perspectives of the Black Left, including labor, community-based movements, Latino, Native and all progressive forces have to be reflected in the movement’s demands and organizational forms. The recent developments in Oakland and San Francisco where Black left forces and labor asserted their leadership suggests that spaces for more effective and principled participation of Black and “people of color” is indeed possible and must be paramount. Finally, comments from the call suggested that in addition to asserting an agenda that reflects our analysis and demands, progressive and revolutionary forces must help sharpen the analysis of the structural contradictions of capitalism. This is seen as necessary to avoid the ideological trap of liberal reformism that continues to undermine radical politics in this country along with the false “universalism” that papers over white supremacy, privilege and class contradictions.

A Call for a National Dialogue on Black Left Participation in the OWS Movement By The Black Left Unity Network and USHRN Labor Working Group Over the last two years, the Black left unity network (BLUN) has engaged in a process that focused on reaching out to Black worker activists in the labor movement, and other core social movements that organize and mobilize the Black working class. We have looked for opportunities such as building support for the Hurricane Katrina survivors and organizing and promoting a Reconstruction movement as a strategic flank of the U.S. anti-imperialist and anti-capitalist struggle, using Survivor Assemblies as popular democratic forums; promoting a Thank You Cuba campaign to challenge attempts to isolate Cuba and socialism as a racist regime; and participating in the Human Rights movement to help ground it in mass bases of resistance to help shape and influence its demands and anti-imperialist political character. While there is much more needed in developing the BLUN as a unity process; a major aspect of the process must be that of forging Black left unity within the context of trying to unify and give a working class and internationalist perspective based in concrete demands to the struggles and upsurges that originate from or may have an impact on the Black masses. Therefore, with the emergence of the OWS as an national phenomenon with developing organizational expressions in various cities across the country, members of BLUN have taken the position that it is important to develop a process for addressing the questions that have quickly surfaced related to the political character of this movement and the role and participation of Black, Latino and Native forces. To that end, BLUN along with the Labor working group of US Human Rights Network hosted this call on Thursday, October 20. Some of the questions that were discussed include: - While our communities are weakly organized, disconnected from the occupation motion, how might Occupy Wall Wtreet be used to organize our communities for fundamental social change in the interests of the Black masses? Or can it? - How can the Black left help to build alliances between the Black and Latino working classes in particular and with workers of color in general to begin forging Black and Brown working class unity as key to driving a popular agenda and mandate for radical social transformation in this period? - How can Black left forces direct this anti-capitalist sentiment and energy of OWS to increase the existing fight backs in the labor movement and the Black communities? - Since labor is an important social force in the capitalist system, how can Black workers influence and help to mobilize the character and content of labors involvement in OWS? - How can the Black left become a force in helping to promote U.S. accountability to the UN Human Rights Conventions as a transitional program toward internationalizing the OWS movement?
