This is Zack Fuss. Today, we are breaking down Cintas Corporation. It is America's largest uniform rental company, and for around $1.50 per worker per day, Cintas will collect, clean, and replace uniforms for organizations in industries such as lodging, hospitality, entertainment, manufacturing, and retail. To help break down Cintas, I am joined by Delian Entchev, a portfolio manager at Aoris Investment Management. The company's origins trace back to the Great Depression, when its founder, who was a circus worker at the time, began a small business to reclaim and clean rags for local factories in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nearly a hundred years later, Cintas is set to approach 10 billion in sales at a 10% five-year CAGR and a 20% operating margin. It remains a family-owned business, with multiple generations of the Farmer family having held leadership roles at the company. Please enjoy this Breakdown of Cintas Corporation. Robert has seen Cintas grow through its ups and downs, making his many years of experience and advice so much more valuable. Robert believes establishing compatibility, facing conflict head on, and being direct helps bring a company's culture to life. Much like a marriage, a company's principle objective, corporate characteristics, and management style need to be compatible with the individual in order to create value. Treating your customers and employees right while maintaining professionalism are some of the things that seem to be forgotten about in the midst of the constantly changing work environments. Visit robertkohlhepp.com. In this episode Steve and Robert discuss:One key trait for successful peopleCultivating a culture in your teamGetting people on board with company cultureDirectness for the sake of making other people better Key Takeaways: When you set yourself to do something, make it a matter of "when" it's going to be done and not "if" it's going to be done. The road to success is always under construction. There will always be an existing culture, the question you must ask as leaders is how are we defining the culture? It takes intentionality and investment to shape your company's culture. Tell somebody that if they don't follow the company culture, they're not gonna be happy and the company's not gonna be happy with them. Nobody wins in that situation. So give them a choice to get on board or step aside.Directness is for authentic leaders who genuinely care about people's growth. Being direct and being a difficult boss are two very different things. Once people realize that you are being direct for their sake, and that you are on their side, that's when they will begin to trust you and listen to your feedback. Criticize the behavior, not the individual.  “In any endeavor, you're gonna get knocked down more than once. The people who are successful get back up, dust themselves off and get back in the game.” - Robert J. • The four essential elements • “Much more important than that was the culture we developed” (Total Recorded Time is 11:52) At a time when worker's tenure with a single company can almost be timed with a wind-up stopwatch, Robert Kohlhepp is an exception. He spent his entire career – more than half a century – with Cintas Corporation, retiring in 2016 after a career that saw him as general manager, vice president and treasurer, executive vice president, president, chief executive officer and finally as chairman of the board. What kept him there? And what magic lesson does Cintas offer to other companies trying to retain key staff? “The thing that made it so good was it was a good business,” he says. “But the thing much more important than that was the culture we developed.” He says there are four main parts to a good company culture: • Determining your principal objective • Establishing your corporate character • Developing consistent management systems, and, • Conducting business ethically. Robert Kohlhepp talks about his career and the development of an ethical corporate culture in a fast-growing business in this Bizgnus Viddo Interview podcast: https://youtu.be/WeRy9bHH3I4 Mr. Kohlhelpp is the author of the new book, “Building a Better Organization,” (Aamass Publishing, LLC, September 2021).
