In this meeting, we discuss Clash of the Titans (1981). Next time, we will be discussing High School Musical: El Desafío (Mexico 2008).
Things get spirited in our discussion of this 1981 fantasy film produced by Ray Harryhausen. We talk about its short-comings, the legacy of Harryhausen, the music, the special effects and more. Does this film suffer from being a product of its time? You may hear the answer in our last episode for "Fantastically Dark" month.
This week we look back at the 2010's Clash of the Titans, starring Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, and Liam Neeson. This contentious remake of the 1981 Ray Harryhausen classic sparked a lot of debate upon release with fans of the original film, but found its own audience with a younger generation that grew up playing God of War games on Playstation.
To kick off the new year, besties Stacy and Daynah revisit Clash of the Titans — not as nostalgia, but as a cultural artifact. From Medusa's distorted origin story to the unchecked entitlement of male heroes, we unpack how victim-blaming, punishment, and “boys will be boys” logic are baked into Greek mythology. What starts as a fun rewatch quickly becomes a reckoning with who gets punished, who gets excused, and why these stories still shape how we understand power today. If you've ever loved a movie and later realized it aged… poorly, this one's for you. 00:00 | Welcome & framing the rewatch 06:00 | Nostalgia vs. reality 12:00 | Medusa and victim-blaming myths 19:00 | Perseus, privilege, and hero entitlement 26:00 | Monstrosity, beauty, and punishment 33:00 | 1980s ratings, nudity, and blind spots 38:00 | Greek mythology as soap opera 42:00 | Why revisiting old stories matters Find Stacy: realeverything.com instagram.com/realstacytoth missionmakersart.com missionalchemists.com Learn more about your ad choices. In 2010 two things were big. 3D films and Sam Worthington, both a result of Avatar from 2009. And whilst that franchise continues on Clash of the Titans (which incorporates both) acts as a time capsule of that era of film making. Also acting as a reboot of the 1981 Ray Harryhausen original movie it pits Perseus, the son of Liam Neeson's Zeus, against the Gods of Olympus including Ralph Finnes Hades who is threatening to release the Kraken on the ever increasingly disgruntled mortals of Greece. Today, Matt and Todd dive into the original classic Clash of the Titans (1981), directed by Desmond Davis and starring: Harry Hamlin, Laurence Olivier, Judi Bowker, Maggie Smith, and Burgess Meredith. One of the most epic adventure films of its time, Clash of the Titans premiered in the summer of 1981, bringing the legendary Laurence Olivier to the screen as Zeus, whose command for the destruction of Argos sets off a thrilling chain of events. The film is best remembered for its groundbreaking special effects, crafted by the master of stop-motion animation, Ray Harryhausen. His work, including the unforgettable Medusa and Kraken sequences, remains influential in fantasy filmmaking. While Clash of the Titans takes heavy liberties with legendary accuracy, it delivers a thoroughly entertaining and timeless experience—a Greek legend reimagined through the lens of English playwrights and Hollywood sensibilities. We hope you love this fantasy classic as much as we do!Matt reviews and ranks more movies including newer ones at LetterboxdYou can find out what he's following on Bluesky @MovieMattSirois.bsky.socialCheck out favorites of what we follow, at: Once Upon a Geek and The Fade Out Podcast As Marcus he reviews all sorts of films but unlike here, they often they range from bad, worse, or terrible at the MovieAsylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.

Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show
In this episode of Dave Does History on Bill Mick Live, Dave Bowman takes listeners back to one of the most pivotal elections in U.S. history—the election of 1912. It wasn't just a contest between candidates; it was a clash of ideologies that would shape the nation for decades to come. With four influential contenders—incumbent William Howard Taft, former president Theodore Roosevelt, Democrat Woodrow Wilson, and Socialist Eugene V. Debs—each presenting a unique vision for America's future, this election marked a turning point. Dave explores the key issues that divided these candidates, from labor rights and corporate power to women's suffrage and social justice, and examines how Roosevelt's dramatic split from the Republican Party set the stage for lasting changes in American politics. Tune in to understand why this “Battle of Titans” still resonates, and discover the lessons it holds for today's political landscape.
It's time for the remake of Clash of the Titans which once again has no Titans in it. Also, we got a message from Thea Nikolic, the Flower Girl from My Fair Zombie!
Clash of the Titans continues Nerd Legion's 1980s fantasy marathon, taking us into Greek mythology (kind of) with Perseus' battles against Medusa and the Kraken. While straying very far from its source material, the film gave us Ray Harryhausen's last crack at stop-motion and effects wizardry as a capstone to a multi-decade career in Hollywood. Maggie Smith and Lawrence Olivier also add some dramatic weight as Greek gods to counter-balance the action sequences of Harry Hamlin's Perseus. A little bit silly, but still compelling, Clash of the Titans remains a fantasy classic and a must-watch for fans of the genre. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The American Buffalo, or Bison, is an iconic image of America. At one point, millions of these huge animals roamed the continent. But settlement and commercial hunting rendered the bison all but extinct. Thanks to the forward thinking of a few cattlemen, the species was saved. But the early twentieth century was a sporting time, and certain questions needed answers. To a few folks from Texas, Mexico, and North Dakota, the burning question was which animal was tougher--a Mexican fighting bull or a buffalo? Well, now we know. Hear the story of an epic battle in this episode of Wise About Texas.
