On this episode of Salt Lake Dirt, I had a great time chatting with Lauren C. Johnson about her novel, The West Façade. The story is set in 1348 Paris and follows the statues of Notre Dame. In the novel, they actually get one night of life every new moon, but they aren't supposed to interact with the human world at all. Things get complicated when the main character, Sainte Geneviève, tastes a piece of fruit left by a mourner. That one moment of human sensation basically changes everything for her, and she has to decide if she wants to stay a silent observer or actually try to live a human life.It was interesting hearing about where the idea started. Lauren was visiting Paris as a student over twenty years ago and found herself really drawn to how intense and "unforgiving" the statues looked. That feeling stuck with her for two decades before it finally turned into this book.We also got into some random, fun territory, like vintage My LIttle Pony toys, rescue doves, and how Bubo the mechanical owl from Clash of the Titans was a huge influence on her. Great chat, great book! Thanks for listening.Kyler

This week on the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast, Tim Williams and guest co-host Chris McMichen journey back to 1981 to revisit the ultimate mythological masterpiece: Clash of the Titans. Before digital pixels took over, Ray Harryhausen's legendary stop-motion magic brought the gods of Olympus and the monsters of the Styx to life. We're diving deep into our earliest childhood memories of the Kraken, the terrifying (and surprisingly effective) Medusa sequence, and the mechanical owl that everyone—love him or hate him—remembers: Bubo. From the gravitas of Laurence Olivier to the groundbreaking practical effects that defined an era, we explore why this blend of Greek mythology and Hollywood royalty remains a timeless cult classic. We'll also talk about the vintage toy line, the film's massive box office impact, and where it lands on our Rewatchability and Nostalgia Meter today.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Clash of the Titans06:04 Rewatching and Nostalgia11:52 Cast and Characters16:54 Impact and Legacy23:07 Notable Performances and Behind the Scenes28:09 The Enforcer of Many Roles34:13 Trivia and Original Storyline39:20 The Clash of the Titans Sequel45:36 Rewatchability and Nostalgia Meter
Hormuzský prieliv, Suezský či Panamský kanál patria medzi najdôležitejšie dopravné tepny planéty. Týmito úzkymi námornými trasami prechádza veľká časť svetového obchodu, najmä ropa, plyn a tovar medzi kontinentmi.

Greek mythology has a way of cycling back. Every generation seems to take a turn with these stories, reshaping them to fit the tools and tastes of the moment. With a new version of The Odyssey directed by Christopher Nolan on the horizon, it feels like a good time to revisit a few earlier attempts. Not the definitive versions. Just four films that each capture a different moment in how the myths were staged.Jason and the ArgonautsDirected by Don Chaffey and brought to life by the stop motion work of Ray Harryhausen, this remains the standard for mythological adventure on film. The skeleton fight is still the showcase. Harryhausen animated seven sword fighting skeletons by hand, frame by frame, matching choreography that had already been filmed with live actors. It took months to complete just a few minutes of screen time. The patience shows. The movement has weight and timing that still feels precise. There is also Talos, the bronze giant, who creaks to life in a way that feels mechanical and ancient at the same time. No digital polish. Just careful craft. The film was not a major hit in 1963, but it built its reputation through television airings and revival screenings. Filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson have pointed to it as an influence.Clash of the TitansNearly twenty years later, Harryhausen returned for what would be his final feature. Released in 1981, the same summer as Raiders of the Lost Ark, it feels like a bridge between eras.Medusa is the standout. Instead of legs she has a serpentine body, and the sequence plays almost like a horror film, full of shadow and flickering light. Harryhausen again handled the creature effects himself, at a time when optical and early digital techniques were starting to change the industry. The cast gives the film a formal tone. Laurence Olivier plays Zeus and Maggie Smith appears as Thetis. There is also Bubo, the small mechanical owl added after the success of Star Wars. Even at the time some viewers were unsure about that addition. It says a lot about where fantasy films were headed in the early 1980s.HerculesDirected by Luigi Cozzi and starring Lou Ferrigno, this version of Hercules leans into spectacle in a way that is sometimes baffling and sometimes charming.Ferrigno had already been known for playing the Hulk on television, so casting him as Hercules made sense on a physical level. The film itself mixes Greek myth with science fiction imagery, including cosmic visuals and creatures that feel closer to Italian fantasy cinema than to Homer. It was part of a cycle of sword and sandal films in the early 1980s, many of them international co productions designed for global markets. The effects are uneven, but there is sincerity here. It commits to its vision without irony. The OdysseyDirected by Andrei Konchalovsky and starring Armand Assante, this two part television adaptation aired in 1997 as an event production. The format allows it to cover more of the journey than most feature films attempt. The Cyclops sequence and the Sirens episode stand out, helped by visual effects that were ambitious for network television at the time. The production won an Emmy for visual effects and reflects a brief period when large scale myth adaptations were being mounted for prime time audiences.Watching it now, you can see both its limits and its effort. It wants to treat the source material seriously, without reducing it to spectacle alone.Taken together, these films show how the same source material can shift with the era. Stop motion craft in the 1960s. Transitional fantasy in the early 1980s. International genre filmmaking. Large scale television in the 1990s.When Nolan releases his Odyssey, it will enter a long line of attempts to translate these myths into something contemporary. Revisiting these earlier versions is a way to see how each generation solved the same problem with different tools. They are worth tracking down. Not because they are perfect, but because each one reflects a moment when someone decided these ancient stories were still worth staging carefully. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week for monster month, let's learn about some animals that are considered spooky, although in actuality they're just regular animals who don't even know the meaning of spooky. Thanks to Ezra, Owen and Aksel, Richard from NC, my brother Richard, and Siya for their suggestions! We'll start with the two Richards. Richard from NC suggested vampire deer, and my brother Richard suggested zombie salmon. The vampire deer is more commonly called the water deer, but considering it has tusks growing down from its upper jaw that look like fangs, vampire deer is an excellent name. Females have short tusks, but in males they grow quite long, sometimes over 3 inches long, or 8 cm. Since the animal only stands about two feet tall at the shoulder, or 65 cm, that's pretty impressive. Its hind legs are longer than its front, so that when it runs it sort of bounces like a rabbit. It has a very short tail, small rounded ears, and is golden brown in color with a lighter underside. It doesn't have antlers. We talked about the musk deer in episode 366, which also has fangs instead of antlers, but the vampire deer isn't closely related to the musk deer. The vampire deer currently lives in Korea, China, and Russia although it used to be much more widespread. It mostly lives in reedy habitats near rivers, and it's a solitary animal although females will sometimes congregate to eat. Males protect their territories by fighting with their tusks, although they don't actually drink blood. As for the zombie salmon, it's not a type of fish but something that can happen to an ordinary salmon. The salmon is a fish that famously spends most of its adult life in the ocean, but travels up rivers to spawn. The eggs hatch in freshwater and the baby fish grow up in the river, and then they migrate to the ocean and live there for almost the rest of their lives. Eventually the fish is fully mature and ready to spawn, so it travels to the river where it was hatched, fights its way upstream, and the cycle starts all over with the new generation. Almost all salmon die after spawning. This is partly because the energy requirements of swimming upstream is so high, but also because a salmon is genetically programmed to die after spawning. This is called senescence, and while it's common in invertebrates like octopuses and some insects, it's rare in vertebrates. Not only that, there's not enough food for an adult salmon in the spawning area, and an adult salmon's body is adapted for salt water, not fresh water, so it can't live long in rivers as an adult anyway. A small number of female Atlantic salmon are able to return to the ocean, recover and regain their strength, and spawn again a few years later, but for all other species, after spawning, that's it. Within days all the salmon have died. But sometimes, rarely, a salmon remains alive for weeks after spawning. It doesn't have the energy to return to the ocean, and its body is in the process of shutting down for planned senescence, and the freshwater is causing damage to the fish's skin. But still it survives, growing more and more raggedy, just like a zombie in a movie. But unlike movie zombies, it doesn't want to eat brains. Eventually the zombie salmon dies, if something doesn't catch and eat it first. Next, Siya suggested the googly-eyed squid.
I hear it as soon as I step out of the car, that resonant, knocking cucucu that I've been listening for all across Montana this summer. Black-billed cuckoo! My hands are shaking and my heart is thumping. I slip one headphone on, aim the parabola, and press record. The cuckoo keeps singing. The black-billed cuckoo is a bird of many mysteries. In this podcast I delve into the biology and wonder of this bird, from the western edge of its breeding range in Montana, USA to the even more mysterious wintering distribution in Colombia and Ecuador. Many thanks to Anna Kurtin (University of Montana) and Dr. Camila Gómez (SELVA, selva.org.co) for their participation in this story, and to their research teams for all of their contributions to our understanding of cuckoos. Thanks to Harriet Marble for telling me about a possible black-billed cuckoo report near the Highwood Mountains, which finally allowed me to observe one! Finally, thanks to Tim Spahr for his permission to include his black-billed cuckoo song and flight call recordings in the podcast, and to Ian van Coller, Bo Crees, and Peter Dudley for letting me include their photos in the written version.Besides Tim Spahr's black-billed cuckoo song and calls, this podcast also includes many of my own sound recordings from Montana: black-billed cuckoo (Coccyzus erythropthalmus), black-headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus), great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), yellow-breasted chat (Icteria virens), orchard oriole (Icterus spurius), northern house wren (Troglodytes aedon), eastern warbling-vireo (Vireo gilvus), Baltimore oriole (Icterus galbula), western wood-pewee (Contopus sordidulus), common nighthawk (Chordeiles minor), American kestrel (Falco sparverius), and brown thrasher (Toxostoma rufum). It was the possibility—slim though it was—of black-billed cuckoos (Coccyzus erythropthalmus) that brought me to the Marias River. In 2021, while Anna Fasoli was floating the river, she heard and recorded a singing cuckoo here. This is a bird that I've lived my whole life without encountering, a bird which a long-ago generation of nineteenth-century naturalists would observe descending on orchards in flocks to feed on caterpillars. Hardly anyone sees flocks of black-billed cuckoos now. To see a cuckoo at all, at least in Montana, is a rare encounter that takes a lot of effort, a lot of luck, or both. But the decline of black-billed cuckoos, like almost every aspect of their biology, remains shrouded in unknowns. And so here I am, listening to rock wrens in a dark badlands gully, bound for the river and imagining cuckoos. This month's story will immerse you in a world at the river's edge that black-billed cuckoos inhabited—and do they still? The podcast includes many of my natural sound recordings: rock wren (Salpinctes obsoletus), northern house wren (Troglodytes aedon), great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), eastern kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus), gray catbird (Dumetella carolinensis), Swainson's thrush (Catharus ustulatus), western wood-pewee (Contopus sordidulus), least flycatcher (Empidonax minimus), yellow-headed blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus), red-naped sapsucker (Sphyrapicus nuchalis), and black-headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus). As well as the alarm sound of a beaver (Castor canadensis). In other words, it's a journey among a sea of sounds from the riparian zone! As always, I depend on the support of my listeners to continue doing this work. Corey Roelke returns to the program to tell us about the progress that he has made with his three peregrine falcons. We begin the episode discussing Corey's dog, duck numbers, and local weather conditions. We briefly talk about "flushability" of diving ducks, before moving onto an accounting of the way the season has gone for each of his birds, starting with his tiercel "Sky Daddy" - yes, that's his name. We then turn our attention to "Beebe" (or maybe it's "Bee Bee", or even just "BB"), Corey's wild-caught, intermewed female peregrine, now in her 10th season, and causing a bit of grief for Corey. We then talk about "Veenar" or is it "Weiner", or maybe "Weener", Corey's 2024 passage female peregrine trapped in Arkansas. We refer briefly to the danger associated with golden eagles, which turns to discussion of Bubo, red tailed hawks, and cotton rats. We conclude the episode talking about the NAFA meet and next steps for Corey's season. Thanks for tuning into Game Hawker Edition, I hope you enjoy Corey's update.

Mentioned in this episode:BUBO

Today we discuss Tongue-tied: Bubo's Tale, the story of Bubo, the frog-dog we see a number of times in Return of the Jedi, who has been in the background of a few stories in this collection. In particular, he really hates Ree-Yees. He's also friends with the B'omarr Monks.

Move over Gizmo, a mechanical owl named Bubo won our hearts this week! Nick and Mel find their destiny lies in watching Clash of the Titans, the fantastic 1981 summer blockbuster that used stop-motion animation and clever Hollywood tricks to deliver a sweeping Greek saga. The star power of Laurence Olivier, Dame Maggie Smith, and Burgess Merideth fit right in with the powerful storytelling that leaves Mel spellbound. We discuss what makes a moment suspenseful, how fast a flying horse should go, and when to remove the troublemaker. (hint: right away!) Release the Kraken!
Lefty explores the wisdom of queer families. A topless woman breaks into a church to rip a Jesus statue off the wall. Night Knight and Bubo are at the mercy of Snakehead! Red reports on an indecent exposure case. Doug&Lefty talk rumors about Guardians Of The Galaxy 3." [EP452]
