The discussion in this bonus episode of The DYOJO Podcast emphasizes the importance of trade association involvement, highlighting the upcoming RIA International Restoration Convention and Expo in West Palm Beach from April 28-30. The event will feature member-driven initiatives, including position papers on best practices and ethical standards. The association is working on obtaining a NAICS code to distinguish its unique skill set. C&R Magazine and The DYOJO have joined forces with The 5050 Challenge which aims to encourage contractors to get out of their comfort zone to expand their professional networks. Pete Consigli joins the conversation to invite listeners to his roast to raise funds for educational initiatives. Jon Isaacson's book, Be Intentional: Estimating, will be available at the event, focusing on estimating mindsets and habits.
This week we welcome back Robert "Concrete Bob" Higgins to discuss new and conclusive research that confirms his theories on surface influences with concrete. Bob's presentation blows up the old paradigm about how and why many concrete surfaces have moisture issues and why it can be so difficult for restoration contractors to dry concrete surfaces. Bob has dealt with a lot of resistance to his ideas and now he claims the final pieces to the puzzle have been located. Robert Higgins has been involved with moisture-related issues in concrete and waterproofing since 1976 and has been developing products for such use since 1980. He was a product development chemist for SINAK. Bob is equally involved in product and process development, having developed most of the products manufactured and marketed by his former company SINAK Corporation, as well as owning or co- owning patents for moisture testing. He has expertise in moisture-related concrete issues, having been involved with waterproofing, technical committees, professional groups, lecturing, teaching; and construction defect litigation.
Episode 120 of The DYOJO Podcast focuses on the importance of contractors, homeowners, and insurance representatives letting the structure speak during the insurance claims process. The discussion emphasizes the restoration triangle involving policyholders, contractors, and insurance companies. Stressing the need for thorough data capture (TDC) to create defensible estimates, advocating for restoring properties to pre-loss conditions with like-kind materials (LKQ). This episode critiques the us-versus-them mentality between contractors and insurers, urging clear communication and adherence to the standard of restoring properties. Listeners will hear about resources for improving estimating and project management skills in the restoration industry. Property restoration historian and watchdog, Pete Consigli, writes, "Lloyd [Weaver] introduced the first specialty designed Porta Dryer for on-location wet carpet drying. While that might not seem like much in today's sophisticated world, 35 years ago (written in 2007) Lloyd's methodology challenged the rug cleaning establishment and its in-plant wet carpet service." Lloyd Weaver is an icon of the water damage restoration industry, he is the man behind many of the core inventions of the modern age of property restoration as well as an early educator who trained many other industry contributors; as well as butted heads with a few others. This is an extended clip, with new content, from a prior conversation (Episode 87) with another industry Founding Father, Cliff Zlotnik. Writing for Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) Magazine in March 2007, Pete Consigli identified Martin "Marty" L. King, Lloyd Weaver, Cliff Zlotnik, and Claude Blackburn as the Four Faces on Mount Restoration. This video includes some additional footage with Cliff, Jim Thompson as well as part of our conversation with Lloyd Weaver's two sons and grandson, all of whom are still active in the industry. Martin "Marty" L. King's vision was to, "See the business of insurance restoration and damage repair become a profession." In this video, which originally aired as part of The DYOJO Podcast Episode 85, we talk to John Pletcher. Mr. Pletcher was awarded the 2022 MLK Award at the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) Annual Convention. John shares his fond memories of being mentored by and working with Marty. In the mid-1980s the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration (ASCR), which would eventually be re-branded as RIA, recognized Marty with a lifetime achievement award for his pioneering work since the late 1960s to carve a restoration niche in the larger cleaning and restoration industry as a standalone discipline from remodeling and general contracting or carpet cleaners and janitorial companies who engaged in restoration work as a sideline business activity. In 1986, the lifetime achievement award was renamed the Martin L. King (MLK) Award given to an individual who has, over many years, made significant and conspicuous contributions to the restoration profession. The August 2015 issue of Cleaning and Restoration Magazine (C&R) featured property restoration industry icon Martin “Marty” L. King in remembrance of his passing earlier that year in May. The title of the video attached to this article, “Igniter of an industry,” is recognized as a concise summary of Marty's contributions to fulfilling his vision for the craft of property restoration. Those four words were penned by another industry founding father, Cliff Zlotnik. For those interested in the history of our industry, Pete Consigli wrote an article recognizing the four faces on Mount Restoration for the same publication (C&R) in March of 2007 which the reader would do well to study. In the 2015 issue previously mentioned, Pete stated, “Marty had a vision for a new and emerging industry he called “damage repair.” Marty's life's work was to see the business of damage repair evolve into a profession. Fifty years after Marty had that dream, the legacy of the restoration industry is in the hands of those he influenced and many of those people are preparing to pass on the stewardship of the industry to the next generation. It is the hope of many that the next generation will take the industry to a place never imagined by the industry's founders.” As part of our ongoing commitment to research and share elements of property restoration history, you can read more and contribute historical content to PropertyRestorationHistory.com As Mr. Consigli says, "Reflecting on Marty's passing, it is my hope that his teachings and wisdom will be remembered with reverence. In this way, the industry will honor those who paved the path for its success today. This is how we will evolve as succeeding generations seek greatness in the restoration profession.” Additional resources on this topic: March 2007 issue of Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) Founding Fathers of Restoration Appearance on IAQ Radio Episode 75 A Brief Walk Through Restoration History (R&R Magazine) Building A Bridge From Restoration's Founding Fathers To The Modern Restorer (Cleanfax Magazine)

My friend, the global restoration watchdog, Pete Consigli, didn't lie. The AEML winter break 2022 was fabulous. He said, “Be there or be square, and the team delivered on a value packed event.” We had three days of information that was pertinent to mold assessors and remediator‘s, and so much more. Topics included water damage, building sciences, risk management, professional development, materials testing, litigation preparation, local and national resources, just to name a few. A testament to the value that AEML brought to the industry was that the speakers were excited and engaged in the presentations from the other speakers. They often were the ones asking probing questions of each other to get a better understanding of the area of focus being discussed. If you want to know more about the event, and whet your appetite for 2024 when THE Florida mold conference returns: IAQ radio will be doing a wrapup this Friday on their podcast at 12 PM Eastern time, I encourage you to tune in. Jeff cross with straight talk conducted several interviews from the event That they have already published. We will be working to edit and release the content that we recorded while on site. Verisk is the parent company that owns Xactware which produces Xactimate. So, if you could ask Xactimate one question, what would it be? We asked Brian several questions and he said that Xactware has worked diligently to build feedback into their systems. Xactimate wants to hear from the everyday restoration contractor and all of its users. The Xactimate Sessions from The DYOJO Podcast File 004 - Efficient and consistent Xactimate reviews The DYOJO Podcast Season 3, Episode 69 Guest: Chris Tilkov, Ask AiME How do we scale our ability to create constantly high-performing Xactimate estimates? Chris Tilkov joins us on The DYOJO Podcast to share his experiences working his way from the ground up as a restoration technician, to estimator, and then to team leader training and reviewing estimates for multiple estimators in a large organization. Chris talks about the challenge of scaling your efforts to consistently and efficiently provide internal reviews for your team. This week, on The Xactimate Sessions from The DYOJO Podcast, we sit down to discuss Xactimate with a restorer who has sat in all of the seats related to learning, training, and elevating estimates. Chris shares the good news of how you can put his robots to work enhancing your efforts to improve your peer review process. Chris shares a few tips for aspiring professionals and growth-minded estimators, stellar insights such as: Think in the broader context of your team. When you write an estimate you are representing "real people's work" and therefore it is essential to thoroughly capture what is needed to charge a fair price so that you can continue to pay a fair wage. Think like an adjuster. As a member of the triangle of restoration, you are part of the process to accurately input a scope of work that represents what is needed to restore the structure to resemble pre-loss conditions with materials of like kind and quality (the standard). This week, on The Xactimate Sessions from The DYOJO Podcast, we sit down to discuss Xactimate with a restorer-turned estimator who transformed into a restoration industry trainer. Nick shares a few tips for aspiring professionals and growth-minded estimators, including: Don't be under-informed. Know your IICRC S500 (and other industry standards related documents) Don't limit yourself. Always be adapting. Don't be stagnant. It's ok to make mistakes. Learn the basics and keep expanding your knowledge base. Don't be just data input. Understand the items that lead to a thorough and accurate estimate so that you can be profitable. NEW SEASON + NEW SERIES The Xactimate Sessions from The DYOJO Podcast File 001 - Learning Xactimate from scratch with Greg Power The DYOJO Podcast Season 3, Episode 65 Greg Power is a project manager/estimator based in Tacoma, WA who learned Xactimate rapidly with no prior industry experience. He initially started writing estimates for property managers responding to damages in apartment complexes and then was soon inundated with a high volume of program work (third party administrator or TPA) for insurance claims. Greg will share some insights on how he approached learning Xacitmate which will be helpful to aspiring estimators and training managers alike. Building from the success and reception for Benchmarks of Growth, a six-part series which The DYOJO Podcast produced earlier this year, the team will be releasing these multi-part Xactimate Sessions weekly over the next few months. Viewers and listeners will receive a great deal of value from the mindset and habits that have helped our guests as well as some deals from the participating vendors and sponsors of the show. Listeners are encouraged to leave comments and/or questions on any of the social media platforms including Youtube, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram so that the discussion can evolve in relationship to need as the episodes drop. SPONSOR: The DYOJO Podcast is sponsored by Advocate Claim Service (ACS), "Where you can find solutions to claims that are causing you anxiety." David Princeton and his team are ready to help you navigate doubtful and disputed insurance claims. Our discussion with Greg includes: Qualifications for a candidate who could succeed with learning Xactimate. Greg shares that had a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and could read a tape measure. Greg learned how to construct an estimate from the ground up by first creating paper sketches on graph paper, something he still practices to this day. Greg shares that as he was learning the Xactimate terminology, it was helpful to memorize (Tip #1) the most common categories and line items (as discussed in Be Intentional: Estimating). By doing so, Greg was able to make his time onsite more efficient by writing his scope notes in Xactimate lingo. This could also be helpful if you are sending notes to a remote estimator. We are interrupted by an Xactimate celebrity cameo from Ben Justesen, of Enlightened Restoration Solutions, who tries to take the show over. Thankfully he departed gracefully (teaser clip). Greg and Jon, who initially trained Greg, discuss the importance of not taking criticism personally (Tip #2). This goes for estimators, who should always be looking to improve, and for training managers who should be mindful of the learning style of their recruits. The duo also discuss the value of using a top-down approach with a consistent heading structure for estimates. Something Jon points out is in his book (shut up already) Be Intentional: Estimating in Chapter 17. As we close File 001 of The Xactimate Sessions, we extend the conversation by discussing approaches to training your team to sketch, as this was brought up in one of social media groups for restorers. Jon references an old video where he was teaching his young children to sketch and announces The DYOJO collaboration with DocuSketch which is offering a $200 discount on the initial hardware package to members of The DYOJO Nation who use the custom code "DS-DYOJO1". This week we are doing a special tribute show for one of our all time favorite guests McGregor “Mac” Pearce, MPH. We will be joined by some IEQ legends that worked with Mac over the years, Joe Lstiburek, Mike McGuinness and the Restoration Global Watchdog Pete Consigli to discuss Mac's contributions to the industry and then we will replay our favorite Mac Pearce show. What could possibly be interesting about mold and mildew, you ask? It's all in the content and the presentation style of the person discussing the subject. IAQ Radio is delighted to memorialize internationally known and acclaimed expert on the subject McGregor Pearce of St. Paul, Minnesota. Mac was an environmental health consultant specializing in indoor air quality problems. He held a Masters in Public Health from the University of Minnesota and was a nationally recognized speaker on mold issues. Mr. Pearce was one of the instructors at The Mid Atlantic Environmental Hygiene Resource Center (MEHRC) which was founded in 1992 as a program of the University Science Center, a Pennsylvania science and technology corporation owned by 28 colleges, universities and academic centers from three states. Mac investigated mold in homes, commercial buildings, hospitals, clinics and skyscrapers and he made mycology marvelously interesting. Mac loved learning; never ceasing to peruse books, engaging with friends, swimming at Big Watab Lake, and hiking at river cabin near Brainerd. LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio+.

This week IAQ Radio+ will be bringing back listener favorite Dr. Ralph "Bad Moon Rising" Moon, a Moisture Mob Associate. Dr. Moon's long anticipated study on the use, interpretation and viability of ATP in the restoration and remediation sector will be previewed this week as Ralph previews to the industry a presentation of his research. The study was recently published in the CIRI peer reviewed " CSQ" Journal in the latest quarterly edition and will illustrate the misuse of ATP technology by addressing common misunderstandings. https://www.ciriscience.org/ In setting up the study, performing the research, interpreting the data and traversing the road to publication through a rigorous peer review process was tedious, time consuming and performed diligently in the "Bad Moon Rising" Way. The primary focus and goal of the study was to ensure that time and resources expended , were commensurate to the useful application of the results for industry practitioners in the assessment, mitigation, restoration and remediation disciplines. The Z-man and Radio Joe will interview and question Dr. Moon as he presents his research and explains the results in the IAQ Radio+ unique "case study" format by using charts and graphs from the CSQ published article. Dr. Moon asked industry historian Pete Consigli to review and comment on the initial manuscript for "restoration" applicability before the document was scientifically peer reviewed. The Restoration Global Watchdog highly recommends that frequent ATP users call in live this week as Cliff and Joe engage the audience with Q&A after Dr. Moon offers his conclusions of the study after halftime. There may be some "Ah Ha" moments even for industry veterans and longtime users of ATP technology for project oversight and/or remediation verification criteria! This week during the Round-up, CIRI Executive Director and CSQ publisher John Downey will be joining the show to comment on the peer review process and talk about some of the exciting initiatives CIRI has in the pipeline this year for the IAQ and Restoration industry! Of course, it wouldn't be a "Restoration" show in the Moisture Mob series without a Mob Consigliere weighing in, so this week's Round-up should be lively as Consigli joins Downey, the IAQ Radio+ team and the loyal group of listeners for an engaging and much anticipated show! Pete Consigli, The Restoration Watchdog, joins us for Part 2 of our BIRTHDAY BASH Discussion for The DYOJO Podcast Episode 54 Please refer to the notes from our prior episode to understand more of the story and sequence of event that led to this industry icon joining us for the one year anniversary of The DYOJO Podcast. Pete is known by many for his role as "The Restoration Industry Watchdog" in multiple capacities including his frequent appearances on IAQ Radio for their "roundup" session. With every attempt to honor the sequence of their show, Pete agreed to open this topic by introducing his good friend Ed Cross as well as re-joining our conversation at the end of the show to input his insights into these topics. Pete was eager to frame the broader conversation in the context of standards of care for restoration contractors. Source material for my article in Restoration and Remediation Magazine (R&R), "A History of Collaboration, a Future of Advocacy" included previously written pieces from Michelle Blevins, Jeff Bishop, IAQ Radio, and a name that kept popping up, Pete Consigli. Mr. Consigli collaborated with Michelle for her article, A Brief Walk Through RIA History, while also composing one of the industry's legacy pieces published in Cleaning & Restoration titled, The Four Faces on Mount Restoration (often referred to as The Founding Fathers article). Pete has long been referred to, by those who had front row seats to the early innovations of property restoration into a professional industry, as Restoration Google. If you intend to dig into the bowels of the emergence of our profession, a good test of whether your source is credible would be whether they ask, “Have you talked to Pete about this?” Part 1 of our conversation for Episode 54 dove into the topic of assignment of benefits (AOB) with "The Restoration Lawyer" Ed Cross. Mr. Cross shared some recent revelations in the fight to defend the right to utilize AOB by insureds and contractors as well as dispel some of the backlash against this resource from his perspective. Mr. Consigli facilitated a Town Hall discussion, followed by an excellent episode of IAQ Radio (#553), in the wake of the 2019 decision in Florida leading to the elimination of the fee shifting statute for contractors. As was revealed in that Town Hall and by daily interactions between contractors, there are strong opinions about the role of AOB in our industry. Whether you believe they should be used or not, caution should be used when responding to one extreme with another, i.e. responding to bad actors by eliminating the resource. This segment is Part 2 of the full conversation and is primarily our conversation with Pete Consigli and the celebration of our joint efforts to gain his trust and participation on The DYOJO Podcast. As Pete shares, he is eager to help all restorers to shorten their DANG learning curve. We encourage all of our listeners for The DYOJO Podcast and our readers for The Intentional Restorer, to do your own research and make your own decisions about the merits of these topics.
MYSTERY GUEST revealed Part 1 of our BIRTHDAY BASH discussion for The DYOJO Podcast Episode 54 It's a fun churning of events that have coalesced over the last year leading up to the birthday bash for the one year anniversary of The DYOJO Podcast. The first of these elements was an interview with Ed Cross, then the inaugural chair for the recently formed Advocacy and Government Affairs (AGA) committee of the Restoration Industry Association (RIA). The Restoration Lawyer graciously agreed to a discussion that would be the core content for an article that would be released as the April column for The Intentional Restorer. These words were drafted to carry the reader through Mr. Cross' legal journey which includes involvement in many of the key evolutions of the property restoration industry. Source material for this article included previously written pieces from Michelle Blevins, Jeff Bishop, IAQ Radio, and a name that kept popping up, Pete Consigli. If you intend to dig into the bowels of the emergence of our profession, a good test of whether your source is credible would be whether they ask, “Have you talked to Pete about this?” Ed Cross shared some recent revelations in the fight to defend the right to utilize assignment of benefits (AOB) by insureds and contractors as well as dispel some of the backlash against this resource from his perspective. Pete facilitated a Town Hall discussion, followed by an excellent episode of IAQ Radio (#553), in the wake of the 2019 decision in Florida leading to the elimination of the fee shifting statute for contractors. As was revealed in that Town Hall and by daily interactions between contractors, there are strong opinions about the role of AOB in our industry. Whether you believe they should be used or not, caution should be used when responding to one extreme with another, i.e. responding to bad actors by eliminating the resource. As John Lapotaire, who was vocal in his dissent during the Town Hall, shared via private message during our discussion with Mr. Cross, “Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. It's AOB abuse that I disagree with. That's a moral and ethical issue not an AOB issue.” Merlin Law Group, respected by many in our industry for their book Pay Up, noted in 2017, “Hopefully, the Legislature will come up with a fair and balanced solution that attacks the bad actors, protects consumers, and preserves the ability of a policyholder to execute an AOB under the right conditions.” Most efforts to bury or alter the right to AOB are cast as Insured Homeowners Protection Act, carrying the connotation that the legislature, often with great encouragement and lobbying from the insurance companies, must intervene to protect homeowners from the big bad contractors. Unfortunately, the simple logic goes, protect the insured by limiting their resources. Ed announced the launch of his new book, The Book on the Assignment of Benefits: A Restoration Contractor's Guide with Forms & Instructions. Mr. Cross believes this resource helps contractors to strengthen their position to force the insurance company to deal with and pay them directly as they negotiate the claims process. As always, we encourage all of our listeners for The DYOJO Podcast and our readers for The Intentional Restorer, to do your own research and make your own decisions about the merits of these topics.
The term “Founding Father” comes from the March 2007 cover of Cleaning & Restoration Magazine. Pete Consigli wrote an article titled The Four Faces on Mount Restoration wherein he said this about Claude's entrance into the carpet cleaning profession, “In the mid to late 1970s, Claude was a struggling young father and carpet cleaner with two little mouths to feed. With only $35 dollars in the bank, he moved his family to Skagit County, Wash., about 60 miles north of Seattle. He had no choice but to get out and knock on some doors; he needed money and he got it by cleaning carpets.” His story reinforces the truth that there are no substitutes for hard work in this industry which has been built up by people both willing to try something new and willing to share what they have learned by trial and error. Mr. Blackburn's first invention, a high density foam block that he would mail to cleaners nationwide and thereby founding Dri Eaz from his basement. Out of fear of being copied by others he set out to create his first air mover. Claude shares an interesting story about the device that would become the flagship of his company that would grow into the industry leader for water damage restoration equipment. The man credited with creating the first air mover, Lloyd Weaver, publicly challenged Mr. Blackburn which only deepened his commitment to making his then fledgling invention work. Pete writes of Lloyd, the first face on Mount Restoration, “Lloyd introduced the first specialty designed Porta Dryer for on-location wet carpet drying. While that might not seem like much in today's sophisticated world, 35 years ago Lloyd's methodology challenged the rug cleaning establishment and its in-plant wet carpet service.” With the help of Harlan Wright their plastic mold prototype was developed in the early 80's. Claude noticed a negative trend with carpet cleaners, “Twenty percent of our industry is going out of business every year,” and wanted to find a way to keep entrepreneurs like himself working in the slow season. As he innovated products, he also developed methods for training contractors to utilize the tools in a manner that could be repeated. Consigli notes, “Claude was sometimes mocked for pricing his seminars under $100. But he knew exactly what he was doing; he consistently played to packed rooms, while the attendance of others' seminars dropped off.” Claude wanted to help his fellow professionals to shorten their DANG learning curve. In addition to providing greater details about his journey in water damage restoration, Claude shared some interesting principles that transformed his business while a guest on IAQ Radio (Episode 473). Mr. Blackburn and a third member of the Founding Fathers Quartet, Cliff “The Z Man” Zlotnik discuss the evolution of the industry. Claude discussed the benefits of profit sharing, “That decision made me the most money of anything I ever did. Most other business owners are afraid to share the financials, I made more money in the five years after implementation than in all the years before.” When Claude sold Dri-Eaz in 2006 it had: 200 employees 150 distributors Sales of 50 million The opening segment of The DYOJO Podcast goes into some depth regarding Claude's post retirement activities which include efforts to elevate pickleball to an Olympic sport. A local paper dubbed him The Pickleball Philanthropist. This week the Moisture Mob returns for the 5th show in the series by delving into the Hardwood Flooring sector of the industry and exploring how moisture impacts the installation, use, warranty and life of installed hardwood flooring. The Restoration Global Watchdog says, join the Z-man and Radio Joe for an intimate ‘fireside chat” show with Howard Brickman, a pioneer and trailblazer in the hardwood flooring industry! Howard was a charter member of the NWFA (wood flooring association) and served for years as the manger for inspections and school services for NOFMA (oak flooring association). He has consulted on or been contracted for many high profile custom installations such as as the Great Hall in Boston’s famous tourist attraction Faneuil Hall. Howard is a self described, “Carpenter-in-Overalls” and served as a technical consultant for the well known home improvement TV show with Bob Vila called, “Home Again”. Hardwood flooring adds significant value and beauty to a home or commercial space. True hardwood flooring (compared to manufactured wood or simulated flooring, sometimes referred to as “was wood”) can be the most common use of an oak tongue and groove to exotic imported wood varieties from the Amazon. The US Department of Agriculture Forest Products Laboratory publishes a map of the United States showing the variance in moisture content in hardwood flooring based on time of year and climate zone. Knowing how moisture affects hardwoods based on the type of substrate used, time of year installed and acclimation time required can make the difference between the success or failure of the project. How are finishes affected by a water intrusion and what techniques are used to access the damage and decide if a floor can be restored or must be replaced? What kind of considerations should a property owner be aware of regarding full refinishing or “screening” a blistered finish on a hardwood floor affected by flooding or simply from high humidity conditions such as an unattended vacation residence? Can severe cupping or crowning of the boards be corrected with specialty drying techniques or “tricks of the trade” and what about those “black” marks around the nails, are they permanent? What is the useful life of a hardwood installation and how many times can it be refinished? This week IAQradio+ listeners will hear answers to these questions and other issues addressed involving the installation, use, restoration considerations from water damage and how this high value item gives the building’s decor warmth and atheistic beauty unlike any other finished flooring! Pete Consigli opines, with most of the world in social isolation and getting “cabin fever”, why not call in live this week to hear Cliff and Joe banter with Howard Brickman, an icon in the hardwood flooring industry!
This week on Iaq Radio+ we welcome John T. Hull. John has over 25 years in the roofing and coatings industries. He is a recognized authority on roof restoration and moisture detection within the roof and building envelope. Mr. Hull has provided technical support, training, and consulting in over 30 Countries. His expertise in roof restoration has contributed to roofing projects at NFL stadiums, airports, universities, hospitals, military bases and even the White house. "Introduction of the Moisture Mob" The last week of October in 2019 IAQ Radio's own Z-man and Restoration Global Watchdog attended a Technical Symposium on Moisture Detection and Measurement in Dublin, Ireland. The symposium was hosted by Tramex, Ltd the global leader and innovator of high quality precision moisture meters for the building envelope and construction materials. Cliff Zlotnik and Pete Consigli collaborated on a presentation on the History of the Water Damage Restoration and Drying Industry. Other notable industry Subject Matter Experts (SME's) who were invited to present on the technical aspects of the symposium theme were Mickey Lee and Lew Harriman. Mickey and Lew have both been interviewed multiple times over the years on IAQ Radio prior to the symposium and are well known with the show's audience. During the symposium Cliff and Pete got to meet other subject matter experts from the restoration, flooring, roofing and related fields hailing from the US, UK and the EU who were in attendance at this invitation only event. Tramex CEO Andrew Rynhart served as the Symposiarch (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/symposiarch) presiding over the proceedings and coordinating hand selected SME's to present to the global invitees and Tramex management on their area of expertise. Last November 22nd Andrew was interviewed on IAQradio followed on December 6th by one of the SME's Cliff and Pete heard present in Dublin on concrete. Robert "Bob" Higgins is a leading authority on the properties, characteristics and performance of concrete from its mix ratio, pour, curing process, use as a substrate for floor coverings, to trouble shooting moisture related problems with concrete used in buildings and structures. The Z-man's blog for Bob's podcast was tag lined "Fact or Faction"! In that spirit and in the hallmark and tradition of IAQRadio's unique style and personality, Cliff, Joe and the Restoration Global Watchdog would like to introduce the "Moisture Mob" (MM) to the industry! The Moisture Mob is an informal network of recognized subject matter experts from a variety of related disciplines who are passionate about disseminating accurate information to the industry on how moisture impacts materials and environments. The MM's purpose embraces an "esprit de corps" epitomized in their motto, "Truth and Accuracy in Moisture Measurement...or Face the Consequences!" The consequences of unchecked moisture and humidity in the built environment and building systems and materials can result in product failure, installation problems, uncomfortable living conditions for building occupants and microbial growth and mold which has deleterious effects to the structure and occupant health. In addition to Andrew Rynhart and Bob Higgins other "MM" charter members yet to be interviewed from the Dublin Symposium on IAQradio are Hardwood SME Howard Brickman from Boston, Sports Flooring SME from Atlanta, William Thornton, Flooring Inspector Extraordinaire Roland Vierra from the San Fransisco Bay Area and this week's guest John T. Hull, Roofing SME. Spring boarding off Andrew and Bob's podcasts and blogs, IAQradio will do a series of four shows over the next several weeks with the Moisture Mob. This Friday on Valentine's Day, please join Radio Joe, the Z-man and Restoration's Global Watchdog for an interview with John T. Hull, a sunshine state resident like fellow MM member Bob Higgins. Florida often characterized as "humidity central" is home base for John hailing from the Florida peninsula's gulf coast. John's Moisture Mob's theme for the show will be,"Roofs, Moisture Meters, Inspections & Solutions for Leaks: Lessons Learned from an Industry Veteran!" LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio+!
This week on IAQ Radio+ we welcome The Restoration Industry Global Watchdog, Pete Consigli, Ed Light, John Lapotaire, Don Weekes and Ken Larsen for an Open Mic discussion of current events. Some topics we will explore include hurricane recovery and lessons learned, testing and cleaning up after wildfires, new mold documents and the association conference season.
Today on IAQ Radio+ Radio Joe will interview John Downey and the Z-man for their overview of key points from each speaker at this weeks ClRI conference. We also expect the Restoration Global Watchdog, Pete Consigli to join us for the roundup. Cleanfax did a nice job summarizing the event: "The annual Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI) Science Symposium concluded Wednesday after two days of intense discussions and presentations outlining the critical nature of protecting health with the science of cleaning. Held at Miami University in Oxford, OH, the conference featured researchers, educators, trainers, and consultants who spoke to a packed room of more than 50 seasoned cleaning and restoration professionals. The conference, produced by John Downey, the executive director of CIRI, and Steven Spivak, PhD, the chair of the Science Advisory Council (SAC) of CIRI, began Tuesday morning with a keynote address delivered by Dr. Greg Whiteley, "Anticipating Threats to Human Health." That keynote address kicked off a slate of 21 "laser-focused, lightning presentations," as coined by Dr. Spivak, along with six Q&A sessions peppered throughout the conference. A highlight of the event was an impassioned dinner speech by CIRI Chairman Jim Harris, Sr. He surprised attendees with some blunt comments on changing the industry for the better. One component that made this a unique event was the peer review process for the presentations. Several were based on original research, including studies conducted specifically for the symposium. "The CIRI Science Symposium is one huge piece of the puzzle of partnering science and cleaning," Downey said. "CIRI is growing and the support we are receiving is encouraging. I'm sure we will see positive, measurable improvements in the industry, protecting health of all building occupants globally."

On May 17, 2019, IAQradio launched the first of a 4 part exclusive series with RIA and IICRC on the Maturing of the Cleaning and Restoration industry. Frequent IAQradio listeners and "followers" of the Z-man's blog are aware, on May 1st, 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona an historic announcement was made at RIA's 73rd annual Convention and Exposition. RIA President Lee King, CR and IICRC Chairman Pete Duncanson taking a page from Reagan and Gorbachev's historic Glasnost agreement executed a Strategic Partnership on behalf of their respective organizations. After the execution of the agreement Mark Springer, CR who is RIA's President Elect announced the launch of RIA's AGA committee. The Advocacy and Government Affairs (AGA) committee chair is well known restoration contractor advocate and counselor Ed Cross known in the industry as "The Restoration Lawyer". The Part 1 May 17th show set the table for this week's Part 2 show as RIA's Springer counterpart from the IICRC, Kevin Pearson, IICRC Chairman Elect will weigh-in with his perspective of the strategic partnership and its impact on helping unify the industry leading towards the ultimate goal of "speaking" with one voice. Joining Pearson will be long time industry insider Craig Kersemeier who has roots in both RIA and IICRC. Kersemeier is IICRC's Marketing Chair and former board member who assisted with the negotiation process. His insights and past history helped both parties garner an understanding of past failures and the lessons learned that led to this historic breakthrough! Pearson will share his vision as he ascends to IICRC leadership in Oct of this year on how and why the partnership can help to advance the profession, protect stakeholder interests and increase the influence of cleaners, restorers, and other practitioners to the trade as the industry matures. It is the hope of each organization's leadership that the future of the industry for the next generation in the global marketplace will be one of harmony and collaboration for the greater good. Through Kersemeier's unique perspective he will share his thoughts in his marketing chair role how IICRC's support of the RIA advocacy movement through the AGA initiative can have a powerful impact of how restorer's are regarded by the insurance industry, government entities and the general public. This will set the table for the Part 3 show in the series when Ed Cross returns to delve deeper into the AGA's future plans and how industry stakeholders can support the advocacy initiative! Again this week, IAQradio's Restoration Global Watchdog will join the show. Pete Consigli and Craig Kersemeier have a history of collaboration trying to unify the industry through their respective influence as RIA and IICRC insiders that dates back over a decade. Pete who is known to IAQradio listeners as not holding back his enthusiasm, likens the announcement of the partnership agreement to a well know scene from the A Team TV show and movie sequel. During the closing scene A Team leader Hannibal Smith would light a cigar and say, "I love it when a plan comes together". Pete and Craig will have to flip a coin to determine who offers the other the match to light the cigar after this week's show! Please join the Z-man, Radio Joe, the Global Watchdog this week for the Part 2 show with IICRC's "A Team" members Kevin Pearson and Craig Kersemeier for IAQradio's exclusive 4 part series on industry maturation and unification.

This week on IAQ Radio we discuss a topic that gets blood pressure up among some in the restoration world. Third Party Administrators TPAs are a fact of life today in many industries and RIA has been helping their members make the adjustments necessary. This week we welcome two widely respected restoration professionals to IAQ Radio. Mark Springer and Phill Rosebrook are both RIA members and were speakers at the recent RIA Strictly TPAs Fall Conference. We look forward to having them join us along with frequent contributor Pete Consigl. Mark Springer If you know Mark Springer, you probably know when the platitude, How are you doing? comes up in conversation, his likely answer is, Living the dream! Thats because its true. Mark has been married to his high school sweetheart, Angie for 20 years and they have been blessed with five beautiful daughters who, fortunately for Mark, take after their mother. Living in Montana accentuates the dream as he is able to pursue doing things he loves like downhill skiing, bow hunting, competitive shooting, and the mountains in general. Its not all hobbies though, Mark also gets to work all over the great state of Montana helping people who have experienced disasters, primarily from fires and floods. He is the President of Dayspring Restoration, a company that specializes in disaster restoration. Dayspring has 6 locations and about 100 team members. Mark has become a mini, (emphasis on ¢??mini¢??) celebrity in Montana due to several television advertising campaigns where he flooded and burned his house and then demonstrated to the community the restoration process, (these videos can be viewed at www.calldayspring.com). Giving back to his community and his industry has always been a priority for Mark as he serves on numerous non-profit and trade association committees and boards Phillip Rosebrook Jr., Cr. Phillip is a graduate of the University of Oregons Lundquist School of Business. He worked his way through college in the family restoration business. He filled most all roles in the company including working on the cleaning crew, carpet cleaning, water damage emergency services, and other various restoration and construction related services. He ran the retail and wholesale carpet cleaning division managing several employees and coordinating the installation crews. After college Phillip managed the water damage division and scheduled all company production crews. He managed the branch office in Coos Bay, Oregon and served the Southern Oregon Coast region. The office was in a very rural area of the state with a small population yet the office grew from $300,000 in annual sales to over $1,000,000 under his management. In managing this office he filled every role from Estimator to Marketing Manager. After training the new Manager Phillip returned to the main office with oversight of all branch offices. He served as the Education Committee representative for the Western Chapter of Disaster Kleenup International. In 1997 when the company sold, Phillip moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to assist in opening a new office for Rocky Mountain Catastrophe. He was in charge of training the new manager, developing the marketing campaign, implementing systems and procedures and training the water damage and cleaning staff. The office quickly grew to over $300,000 in monthly sales. Phillip joined his father as a Partner in Business Mentors in March of 1998. He specializes in implementing change in restoration companies. He works with the individual managers, key employees and sometimes even the field staff to implement new systems and procedures. He developed the Operations Manual and Personnel Manual that is utilized in all of Business Mentors consulting. He is a frequent presenter at industry conferences, contributing author to the WLI course book and has authored many articles in Cleaning and Restoration magazine. Phillip is the founding partner of ELC Training a training resource for restoration companies. He is also a faculty member of the Restoration Leadership Institute. Phillip is the father of four children and has been married to Deanna since 2000. He enjoys gardening, hiking, and cycling. Phil lives in Portland, Oregon.

This week we flashback to a show from 3-28-2008 with Martin L. King, ASA, CR. Unfortunately Mr. King is no longer with us but we feel blessed to have this interview with him. We have cleaned up some audio issues and are thrilled that this fantastic interview will live on many years to come. We are proud to have done this interview and plan on dedicating quite a few future Flashback Fridayâ??s to shows with industry leaders that are unfortunately no longer with us, this is the first in that series. Martin King, ASA, CR was the Restoration Industries Association Technical Adviser for 30 years, where he developed a broad range of restoration procedures and published over 300 articles in trade journals. As the CEO of Martin Churchill Associates, Inc. Damage Investigators and Appraisers Mr. King also investigated and prepared formal reports on over 2000 property damage cases. Marty also taught at the University of Maryland in the Fire Sciences group. Mr. King was the man disaster restoration people went to when nobody else could answer their questions. Donâ??t miss this rare opportunity to hear the â??Dean of Disaster Restorationâ??. Also joining us on this show was The â??Restoration Industries Global Watchdogâ?? Pete Consigli and our Technical Director, Dr. Dietrich Weyel.
This week on IAQradio we welcome an All Star cast for a frank discussion on the future of the restoration industry. Our guests were all speakers at last week's 71st International Restoration Convention and Industry Expo in Palm Springs, CA. They all gave important presentations or Keynotes at the Restoration Industry Association's (RIA) annual event. The Town Hall theme for this year's event was "The Future of the Water Damage Restoration Industry" and was facilitated by none other than IAQradio's Restoration Global Watchdog Pete Consigli! The Town Hall was the culmination of one of RIA's convention story line's that included a breakout session moderated by Ken Larsen on the Do's and Don'ts of Rebates, Referral Fees, Comps and Gratuities with Peter Crosa and well known IAQ attorney Michael Bowdoin. Ed Cross was the convention's Day 2 keynote speaker and addressed the RIA members on "The 6 New Legal Points Restorers must Understand to Survive in 2017". Crosa who is the sitting President for the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters (NAIIA) presented the Independent Adjusters viewpoint on the Town Hall Panel. Well known industry advocate Ed Cross aka "The Restoration Lawyer" made his case for industry unification through one voice and closed out his Town Hall panel presentation with a message to band together, "Band or Burn" was the reoccurring message! The RTPE program (Registered Third Party Evaluator) recently explained to RIA members at their annual convention in Palm Springs during their Town Hall meeting by Ken Larsen, CR, WLS, CMP may be a solution for contractors who are constantly challenged by TPA's on their scope of work and invoices. Longtime industry activist and RIA supporter Ken Larsen presented his vision for the RTPE program on the RIA Town Hall panel along with Peter Crosa, AIC, RPA and Ed Cross, Esq. Larsen has a 5 part series on the TPE concept that was previewed in the 2017 February issue of Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) magazine. A high point of the RIA annual banquet and awards ceremony was the presentation of C&R's Golden Quill award won this year by IAQradio's own, Cliff "The Z-man" Zlotnik for his article on "Concerns over the Water Restoration Industry". The culmination of the ceremony was the awarding of the association's most prestigious honor, the presentation of the Martin L. King award. The 32nd annual recipient of the Marty King award was Ken Larsen for his years of service and activism to RIA and the industry! Way to go Ken!!

This week we welcome back the Restoration Industry Global Watchdog Pete Consigli for Part Three of his stroll down restoration lane with the Z-man Cliff Zlotnik. Two weeks back Pete was in Pittsburgh to sit down with The Z-man and for a retrospective conversation about their longtime relationship that has spanned almost 4 decades. The show could be characterized as "Restoration Confidential". It was personal, insightful, controversial at times but most of all it came from the heart with a spirit of setting the record straight on many of the industry's misnomers and folklore! Two of the industry's most well known and colorful personalities sat down to reflect on their professional life together as they come to the realization that in their twilight years there is still much to be done and their "work" is still in progress! IAQ Radio listeners know Pete as a friend of the show and the Global Watchdog who helps recruit guests and support their interviews that address issues facing the restoration industry. The recent passing of industry icon Marty King who founded the original restoration industry trade group in 1971 leaves Pete and Cliff as the only remaining honorary members of RIA. Next year Pete and Cliff will celebrate 2 milestones with RIA's 70th Anniversary Convention in March and the 20th anniversary of Summer Camp in August. As IAQ Radio listeners may know, this past March in Dallas IAQA inducted Pete into its Hall of Fame for his work with Joe Lsiburek's legendary Building Science Symposium known as Summer Camp. What most listeners don't know is that Cliff was there with Pete for the first Summer Camp in 1996 as the 2 invited representatives from the restoration industry! All three of us are now back from this year's Summer Camp and we hope you will tune in this week as Pete and Cliff cap off their show about the milestone events that helped shape the industry that you know today. As IAQ Radio listeners may know, this past March in Dallas IAQA inducted Pete into its Hall of Fame for his work with Joe Lsiburekâ??s legendary Building Science Symposium known as Summer Camp. What most listeners donâ??t know is that Cliff was there with Pete for the first Summer Camp in 1996 as the 2 invited representatives from the restoration industry! Pete and Cliff talk about the milestone events that helped shape the industry that you know today and give IAQ Radio listeners an insiders view on how, why and when things happened! During Parts 1 & 2 Pete, Cliff and Radio Joe sat down at the â??kitchen tableâ?? and had a retrospective conversation providing the background on the most pressing issues the industry faces today. During Part 3 August 7th Radio Joe will press Pete and Cliff to finish the story and share their vision for the future of the industry with IAQ Radio listeners. LEARN MORE and listen to this show then join us live August 7th when we finish the most unique IAQ Radio interview ever! King award. In 2012 RIA made Pete an honorary member to its association, only the second such honor in RIAâ??s 60+ years. The first was to Marty King, CR, ASA, a member of the industryâ??s founding generation and longtime mentor to Pete. In 2015 IAQA President Kent Rawhouser inducted Pete into the IAQA Hall of Fame for his involvement in the legendary Westford Building Science Symposium, aka â??Summer Campâ?? This week Pete Consigli was in Pittsburgh and sat down with the Z-man and Radio Joe in Studio C for a retrospective conversation about the almost 4 decade relationship between these two restoration industry icons. This show could be characterized as â??Restoration Confidentialâ??, it was personal, insightful, controversial at times but most of all came from the heart with a spirit of setting the record straight on many of the industryâ??s misnomers and folklore! Listen in as two of the industryâ??s most well known and colorful personalities sit down to reflect on their professional life together as they come to the realization that in their twilight years there is still much to be done and their â??workâ?? is still in progress! This was a tremendous show that gave us a peak into Consigli and Zlotnikâ??s Restoration Journey with a destination yet to be realized. We will finish the story with another special show following Summer Camp on August 7th at noon eastern. IAQ Radio listeners know Pete as a friend of the show and the Global Watchdog who helps recruit guests and support their interviews that address issues facing the restoration industry. This week on IAQ Radio we will be coming to you live from the Rio in Las Vegas where for the first time ever the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) and the International Inspection, Cleaning, Restoration Council of Associations (IICRCA) co-located their conferences. Radio Joe and the Z-man will be joined by RIA President Scott Stamper and/or RIA 1st Vice President Chuck Violand and IICRCA Chairman Bryan O'Haleck. All of these fine gentlemen have been guests on IAQ Radio in the past and we look forward to bringing them back to get their views and perspective on this weeks events. We want to know what they learned and can pass on to listeners? What new announcements were made? Are there any new trends in the exhibit halls? How was attendee response? Why were there so many Aussies here this week and what we can expect in the future? We will also be joined by the restoration industry global watchdog Pete Consigli with his unique perspective on this weeks activities and events. This show will immediately follow a widely anticipated debate/discussion on changes to the IICRC S500 Professional Water Damage Restoration Standard. We will add a few words on how the debate went from the perspective of the moderators and our guests. Natural disasters occur globally and with real time cell phone and media coverage seem to occur with greater and greater frequency. Structural resiliency, disaster preparation and response are studied and researched at institutes of higher learning around the world. This week Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana hosted I3R2 the 10th International Conference of the International Institute for Infrastructure Resilience and Reconstruction where conference delegates from North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia met to collaborate on better practices to prepare and execute effective disaster response. Technical presentations were made by the CDC, Society of American Military Engineers, Army Corps of Engineers; and 31 technical presentations were reviewed. A first ever panel discussion between emergency responders and academia was also part of the program. Pete Consigli organized the panel and the Z-man was one of the panelists. This week on IAQ Radio we traveled to Purdue to LEARN MORE and to broadcast our own round-table panel discussion about the Purdue Building Construction Management program and the 10th I3R2.

This week we are live from the New Jersey shore at a conference organized to help explore issues and find answers following Super Storm Sandy. The conference is presented by the Fungal Research Group Foundation-the same group responsible for the Bioaerosols, Fungi, Bacteria, Mycotoxins in Indoor Environments and Human Health conferences since the early 90s. Joining us this week will be three people attending the conference and more importantly working directly with those affected by Sandy. Tom Peter, CIH is VP of Insurance Restoration Specialists of Monroe, NJ. Since October he has been working in many of the Jersey Shore schools, commercial buildings, municipal buildings, residences and schools in the NY-NJ area. Mike McGuinnis, CIH, CIAQP is founder of RK Environmental of Phillipsburg, NJ. Mike is also busy helping business owners, contractors and residents of the NY-NJ Shore area consulting on mold and other indoor environmental contamination issues. Pete Consigli is a friend of the show, frequent contributor and restoration industry watchdog. We will be discussing the presentations at the conference and updating listeners on the issues locals are facing almost six months after Sandy pounded this area. LEARN MORE this week on IAQ Radio.
