Matt goes solo this week to share hard-earned wisdom from his 30-year construction. He outlines three foundational principles that have shaped his success—and helped him recover from serious setbacks.1. Understand Building ScienceMatt emphasizes the importance of knowing how climate, materials, and design affect building durability. Lessons from Portland's mold crises taught him that “if it can't dry, it's going to die.” Builders must master rain control and moisture management to prevent failure and reduce liability.2. Stop BiddingHe shares a cautionary tale of a low-bid roofing contractor whose shoddy work and fake insurance cost him over $30,000. Instead of free estimates and competitive bidding, Matt now uses pre-construction agreements to ensure clients are committed—and to get paid for his time.3. Avoid DebtMatt recounts going hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt during the 2008 recession, even struggling to pay for groceries. He urges builders to stay lean, avoid speculative projects, and budget personally AND professionally. Matt's advice: “Fire Chuck”—his nickname for the debt he couldn't get rid of for years.Matt concludes with a reminder that profit is essential, not shameful. Builders must prioritize long-term sustainability, financial health, and client trust to thrive in a competitive industry.Thank you to our episode sponsors Rockwool & Pella. You're not supposed to be good at everything. But somehow, Alli is.Architect, landscape architect, developer, GC, policy reformer, zoning translator, builder of teams, builder of trust, builder of actual buildings-it's no wonder we spent the first five minutes of this episode just trying to list all the roles she plays. In this conversation, Alli joins me to talk about what it means to be a true generalist in an era obsessed with specialization. But we also get into the harder stuff-like learning to lead, facing city bureaucracy, and what to do when the guy reviewing your permit might genuinely want to run you over with his truck. This one's as practical as it is philosophical, and it left me feeling more hopeful-and a little more fired up-about what's still possible if we're willing to roll up our sleeves and terraform our own backyards.CHAPTERS00:00 Community Engagement and Local Impact02:51 The Multifaceted Career of Ali05:51 Navigating Development and Housing Challenges09:09 The Unique Economy of Fayetteville11:56 Balancing Growth and Community Needs14:57 Career Trajectory and Intentionality18:06 Building Science and Sustainable Practices20:49 Design-Build Workflow and Efficiency24:07 Entrepreneurial Spirit in Development31:57 The Design-Build Approach: Learning Through Doing34:51 Scaling Up: The Challenges of Growth39:10 Understanding the Market: Design Meets Demand41:55 Terraforming Communities: The Role of Local Investment44:11 Building a Culture of Collaboration: The Fayetteville Experience49:50 Changing the Narrative: Zoning and Community Engagement57:04 Navigating Conflict: Building Relationships with City Staff01:08:20 Building Relationships in Local Governance01:15:06 Navigating Conflict with City Staff01:20:01 Growing a Business: Challenges and Changes01:26:09 Tools and Software for Efficiency01:34:00 Learning from Failures and GrowthCONNECT WITH AlliFlintlock Lab: flintlocklab.comIncremental Development Alliance: incrementaldevelopment.orgInstagram: @flintlocklabLinkedIn: Alli's ProfileCONNECT WITH AUSTIN TUNNELLNewsletter: https://playbook.buildingculture.com/ https://www.instagram.com/austintunnell/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/austin-tunnell-2a41894a/ https://twitter.com/AustinTunnellCONNECT WITH BUILDING CULTUREhttps://www.buildingculture.com/ https://www.instagram.com/buildingculture/ https://twitter.com/build_culture https://www.facebook.com/BuildCulture/ SPONSORSThank you so much to the sponsors of The Building Culture Podcast!Sierra Pacific Windows: https://www.sierrapacificwindows.com/ One Source Windows: https://onesourcewindows.com/

Matt welcomes fellow Build Expert, Travis Brungardt, back to the studio for a “back to basics” conversation: HVAC 101, which includes foundational concepts, practical advice, and common mistakes in residential HVAC systems. Emphasizing the importance of proper planning, they stress starting with accurate manual J load calculations to avoid outdated “rules of thumb” like sizing based solely on square footage. Matt & Travis also break down the crucial roles of manuals D (duct design), S (equipment selection), and T (terminations). Both champion rigid metal ductwork for optimal airflow, using minimal flex duct only at final connections to reduce noise. Also, they warn against unconditioned attic duct runs and advocate for dedicated return ducts in each major room to maintain balanced airflow and comfort. The conversation explores the pros and cons of two-stage and variable-speed systems, promotes ductless mini-splits for additions, and strongly advises against zone damper systems due to reliability issues. They also highlight the importance of user education: set thermostats and forget them, avoid "fan on" mode, and design systems for future maintenance access. Matt and Travis remind builders that a well-designed and properly installed HVAC system not only improves energy efficiency but also delivers lasting comfort and better indoor air quality. To see a practical application of the strategies outlined in today's episode, check out Prairie Sun & Timber, a Build Original® series hosted by Travis.Thank you to episode sponsors Pella & Huber! It's an IAQ Deep Dive…part two! Matt welcomes Sean Harris back to the studio to continue their discussion indoor air quality improvements for existing homes, focusing on mold prevention, HVAC upgrades, filtration, and dehumidification—especially in hot, humid climates like Texas. Sean emphasizes that mold issues often stem from leaky ductwork in unconditioned spaces, poor ventilation, and high humidity, leading to compromised air quality. Instead of cleaning mold, he recommends removing contaminated materials and improving source control. For HVAC systems, Sean suggests keeping ductwork in conditioned space, using MERV 13+ filters, and installing a ventilating dehumidifier to maintain humidity below 50%. He warns against running HVAC fans continuously, as this can pull humid air into the system, worsening mold issues. He also recommends in-room HEPA filtration (isuch as IQAir or Austin Air) over whole-home air purifiers. They discuss (and advise against) gimmicky air purification methods like UV lights and ionizers, which can create harmful byproducts. Instead, homeowners should monitor IAQ with smart sensors, track humidity, and optimize their home's ventilation and filtration. Sean emphasizes "optimization over maximization"—cost-effective solutions like air sealing, replacing moldy ductwork, and using high-quality air filters rather than full HVAC overhauls. Both Matt & Sean encourage homeowners to prioritize practical, science-backed IAQ improvements for a healthier living environment.Thank you to episode sponsor Mbrico. Matt welcomes fellow Build Expert, Travis Brungardt, to discuss the brand-new Build Original Series® Prairie Sun & Timber, which follows Travis as he builds a hybrid high-performance home blending Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) and traditional framing. Travis outlines the project, noting that the upper level utilizes SIPs for insulation and strength, while the walkout basement level is conventionally framed with ZIP-R9 panels for flexibility. Throughout the series (and build itself), a key focus is air-sealing and moisture control. To prevent common SIPs failures like ridge rot, Travis applied PROSOCO Cat 5, a liquid-applied WRB, continuously from foundation to ridge, ensuring an airtight and waterproof structure. Matt & Travis discuss SIPs challenges, particularly running electrical wiring. Instead of the traditional method of melting wire chases, Travis framed a service cavity inside the walls, making installations easier. Matt and Travis emphasize the benefits of hybrid construction's, proper air-sealing techniques, and ways to maximize performance while maintaining flexibility. Happy New Year! I begin 2025 with a conversation I had with Randy Williams. Randy is well known for his Northern Pro Build blog that concentrates on applied building science, energy efficiency, and cold climate construction. He followed his brother into the building industry and quickly made a name for himself once he caught the building science bug. He was introduced to building science when he became an energy auditor during the economic downturn of 2009. He now describes himself as a building science nerd and supports himself by applying it as a contractor, energy auditor, and regular contributor to Fine Homebuilding, Journal of Light Construction, and Green Building Advisor. For me, it was really fun to have this conversation with Randy, building science nerd to nerd. Our time together flew by because we were just talking about our shared passion. Thanks much for your continued support and likes. Randy Williams on LinkedIn Norther Built Pro - A Cold Climate Construction and Energy Blog Randy Williams on Fine Homebuilding

Matt does a deep dive into foundations and why one foundation might be a better choice than another, depending on your location. Many foundation styles came about because of frost-line differences. Northern builders might have a 3-foot frost line, which means it's necessary to dig below the frost line to avoid freeze-to-thaw issues in the wintertime. In other parts of the country, there might be a 1-foot frost line so a crawlspace makes the most sense. Finally, in the South and parts of the country with almost no freeze-to-thaw issues, slab on grade works great with a foundation embedded 12 - 18 inches into the existing soil.Matt considers how a foundation should be done when keeping ducts inside the conditioned space of a home. He focuses on crawlspaces versus slab on grade, with an emphasis on HVAC systems inside the conditioned envelope.Find Matt and The Build Show on the web:Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/mattrisingerInstagram: @risingerbuild and @thebuildshowTikTok: @thebuildshowYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@buildshowWebsite: https://risingerbuild.com/ and https://buildshownetwork.com/Don't miss a single episode of Build Show content. This week, Matt goes solo to highlight five common construction mistakes made by Texas builders and offers practical solutions to improve building quality.Ductwork in Hot AtticsPlacing ducts in unconditioned attics leads to inefficiency, mold growth, and energy loss. Builders should relocate ducts into conditioned spaces using techniques like closed-cell foam insulation or innovative Rheia duct systems.Cardboard SheathingFlimsy, paper-based sheathing lacks durability and fails to resist air and water infiltration. Durable materials like plywood, OSB, or Huber ZIP-System sheathing offer superior performance and longevity."Houses Need to Breathe" MythAir leaks degrade indoor air quality and cause microbial growth. Builders should create airtight homes with proper ventilation systems, such as ERVs or HRVs, and incorporate dehumidifiers for moisture control.Poor Stucco InstallationImproper stucco systems fail when exposed to irrigation. Using resilient materials and ensuring proper drainage can prevent structural degradation and water damage.Steel Windows and DoorsNon-thermally broken steel frames cause condensation, leading to damage. Thermally broken frames, wood-clad windows, or triple-glazed options are better choices for Texas's climate.Matt emphasizes sustainable building practices and learning from past mistakes to Know Better. The tension between aesthetics and performance in architecture is a critical and complex issue in contemporary design. Architects are increasingly and appropriately being tasked with designing buildings that are not only beautiful but also functional in terms of impacts on owners, occupants, resources, and planetary ecosystems. The contrasting view, one where architecture is principally form-making comes at its peril. As Juhani Pallasmaa cautions, following this path “The world becomes a hedonistic but meaningless visual journey”Navigating the path between form and function is central to the role of architecture in our society. It is also the backdrop to the daily routine for our guest in this episode. Keith Simon FAIA is both an architect and an enclosure consultant, two roles that move him from one vantage point to the other continually. As Keith says in this interview Architects could be leading many of the changes society needs now but are not. I think we should all look introspectively and ask “Am I prioritizing the right things?”. This episode is both a tribute to the importance of architecture and an appeal to prioritize the lived experience of homes and buildings over the hedonic sculpture on the cover of the glossy magazine. The themes touched on here will ripple out through the AEC for the rest of our careers. It's both important and captivating to reflect on them now. Enjoy!Keith SimonAn expert in building enclosure technology, Keith Simon addresses the critical and often unmet need for ensuring and improving building performance, resilience, and durability by guiding design teams, educating future architects, and facilitating interdisciplinary exchange. Keith is the Vice President of Design Phase Services at Salas O'Brien. He is a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC), Legacy LEED AP, Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (BECxP), and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) with over 20 years' experience in architectural design and building enclosure consultation. Steve joins Matt live in the ROCKWOOL studio to explore cost-effective strategies for building high-performance homes. They discuss common misconceptions about homebuilding costs, particularly the misleading reliance on "cost per square foot." Additionally, they emphasize prioritizing quality over size, suggesting that a well-built smaller home can provide better long-term value.Using Steve's Multigenerational Home on a Budget project as an example, they discuss key decisions include using UPVC triple-glazed windows, which improve insulation and reduce HVAC costs, and Bosch HVAC systems to provide efficient heating and cooling. The house also uses Huber's ZIP R9 insulation for air-tightness, eliminating the need for costly closed-cell foam. The design keeps materials simple yet durable, opting for more affordable features like modest kitchen cabinets and a basic ERV system while maintaining good indoor air quality.Steve highlights the cultural differences in homebuilding, particularly in Europe, where permanent features like windows are prioritized over easily replaceable items like countertops. Matt & Steve's discussion can serve as a guide for those looking to build smarter, energy-efficient homes on a budget without sacrificing long-term performance.Resources:UnBuild It Podcast: https://buildshownetwork.com/podcast/unbuildit-podcast“Not So Big House” by Sarah SusankaEnergy Vanguard: https://www.energyvanguard.com/Find Steve on the Web:Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/stevebaczekInstagram: @stevenbaczekarchitectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@stevenbaczekarchitect9431Website: https://stevenbaczekarchitect.com/info/Find Matt and The Build Show on the web:Build Show Videos: https://buildshownetwork.com/go/mattrisingerInstagram: @risingerbuild and @thebuildshowTikTok: @thebuildshowYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@buildshowWebsite: https://risingerbuild.com/ and https://buildshownetwork.com/Join us at Build Show LIVE this November 7-9 in Austin, TX.
