Google shuttered its source code hosting service Google Code in 2015. Like Facebook, Twitter, and most other major technology companies, Google primarily shifted to a similar service called GitHub to host its own open source projects. Microsoft followed suit and closed its CodePlex service in 2017. It acquired GitHub the next year.

After 27 episodes, we realized that we haven't really covered the science and theory behind what we talk about every week, Enterprise Information Management. So, EP28 is dedicated to dissecting what makes up EIM and how it applies to what we, AND you do. As always, we bring you the latest news, including Group retention, CodePlex info and much much more.
This week's podcast is live from SPTechCon in Austin. We talk about the upcoming SharePoint Virtual Summit and what will be discussed there. We also lament the closing down of Codeplex and discuss one of our favorite projects, the SharePoint Search Query Tool. We wrap the show up discussing how my dishwasher may hack my refrigerator with the microwave's help.
Mike and Steve are snooping your hard drives and discussing the latest privacy laws in the US, Amazon's new Make-A-Phonetree service, YouTube's latest issues with advertisers pulling their ads and the demise of CodePlex.

How do you manage your SQL Servers? Richard talks to Boris Hristov about using Policy-Based Management tools in SQL Server. These tools have been in the box since SQL Server 2008, but it's amazing how many folks still don't use them - are you really RDPing into every SQL Server? Hristov talks about using the Policy-Based Management tools to sweep across all of your SQL Servers and check what various settings are at - and change them if you need to! The conversation also digs into creating a Central Management Server to have a repository of all SQL Server instances and make it easy to propagate changes. Finally, if you're ready to step up your SQL management game, take a look at the Enterprise Policy Management Framework, a CodePlex project to do detailed analysis and reporting on your entire SQL Server landscape.
The Reactive Extensions (Rx) is a library for building async and event-based programs using observable sequences & query operators. Developers can use Rx to represent asynchronous data streams with Observables and query those data streams using LINQ operators. Rx can utilize Schedulers to parameterize concurrency asynchronous data streams. Simply put, Rx = Observables + LINQ + Schedulers. Rx comes in many flavors and there are a lot of resources out there. Microsoft has open sourced this interesting and powerful way to work with async data streams so that we can all contribute and benefit from its strengths & weaknesses.Matthew Podwysocki (@mattpodwysocki), Microsoft ‘Open Sourcerer', demystifies the Rx realm and opens our minds to new ideas. Carl and Richard talk to Mårten Rånge about his efforts to contribute to the open source project that is F#. F# is really open source and taking public contributions, but as Mårten explains, it's not that simple. You need to get engaged with the project on CodePlex and actually get to know the team and where the project is at to hope to make a difference there. As Mårten says, everyone is very nice, but they do have a vision of where the project is going - and you can contribute to that vision! The conversation digs into what it takes to actually build your own version of F# as well as the art of making a contribution to a project that will ultimately be delivered in Visual Studio. This is just the start for Mårten, and perhaps for you also!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/net-rocks/donations

One day we woke up and things were different. Maybe it happened overnight, maybe it took many years. Suddenly the ASP.NET Web Stack is open source, hosted using Git on CodePlex and taking pull requests from the Mono team. We can run node.js and Java alongside ASP.NET in the Azure Cloud and deploy them easily. The Visual Studio editor supports HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript in a big way. ASP.NET ships not only the open source jQuery library out of the box but also KnockoutJS, jQuery UI, jQuery Mobile and Modernizr. The Azure SDKs are hosted on Github. We are scripting thousands of Virtual Machines from the command line while others are creating things today with JavaScript that were impossible yesterday. Join Scott Hanselman as he explores the relationship between the Cloud and the Browser, many Languages and one Languages, how it might all fit together and what comes next. Development is fun again.
Windows Azure enables developers to use a variety of workflows to automatically deploy code from the tools you’re already using, like TFS, CodePlex, and GitHub. Come join us and check out how easy it is to deploy your ASP.NET, Node, and PHP applications to the cloud.
This morning's episode was recorded early so my European friends could join in at a reasonable hour and heckle. I told them how much fun I had at SharePoint Saturday New Hampshire and how they should go to SPS events too. Then I told them about how I screwed up last week talking about the Request Manager, but how Spence set me straight. Then I talked about my blog post on using PowerShell to make domains in Windows Server 2012. Finally I talk about some SQL things and some Codeplex projects that came out recently that I took a shine too.

In this episode, I focus on another small tweak that developers can add to their apps that will help make those apps look a lot more like native apps. I’m referring to the addition of the Tilt Effect to controls. By default, when you add controls to the canvas in Visual Studio or Expression Blend they do not get the tilt effect. This may seem like a small thing but as I’ve mentioned before the experience is something that users will notice and their ratings and as a result your rankings will be affected by that. The thing is, that there is, in fact, a really easy way to add the tilt effect to your apps using the Silverlight for Windows Phone Toolkit . You can grab the source code for that from Codeplex or, even easier, you can just pull it in to your project and reference it using Nuget.Adding the Tilt Effect is as simple as adding the namespace for the toolkit and then adding the effect to either the individual controls or to the entire page. In most cases it shouldn’t take you more than a few seconds on each of the pages in your project so there’s really no reason for you not to take advantage of this.Let me know what you think about this episode of Top Ranked. If you have questions about any of the videos, about problems or issues you’re hitting or if you have topics that you think would be of interest to other devs on the Windows Phone platform then drop me a note. I’d be particularly interested in hearing about some of the best practices you’ve adopted that you think have raised your quality or your ratings/ranking in the Marketplace. While at CodeMash, Carl and Richard collected some great stories. First up is Evan Hauck, who digs into CUDAfy, a library on Codeplex that allows you to run C# code (any IL code actually) on your GPU. The second story is about Jessie Shternshus and her company The Improv Effect. Jessie talks about how she uses improv to help teams work together more effectively. Another awesome CodeMash!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/net-rocks/donations
