The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) facces ongoing challenges regarding its backlog of security vulnerability reports. Despite some progress, NIST missed its September 30th deadline to restore processing speeds to pre-February levels, leaving over 17,000 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) unprocessed. This backlog poses significant risks to organizations, as they may remain unaware of vulnerabilities that are actively being exploited. The episode highlights the importance of effective risk management in cybersecurity and encourages organizations to pressure vendors to participate in disclosure programs. The episode also delves into the rising concerns surrounding cloud security threats, which have become the top worry for executives, according to a recent PwC report. The report identifies hack and leak operations, third-party breaches, and ransomware as leading threats, with organizations feeling least prepared to address cloud attacks. Additionally, Microsoft has informed customers about a software bug that affected log data collection for key security products, emphasizing the need for robust security measures and incident response planning.Host Dave Sobel shifts focus to the impact of Broadcom's acquisition of VMware, which has led many users to explore alternatives like OpenStack. The latest version of OpenStack, codenamed Dalmatian, is experiencing a resurgence as former VMware users migrate to its platform, benefiting from improved tools and a stable ecosystem. Meanwhile, Microsoft has announced a 10% price increase for its System Center management tool set for 2025, raising questions about potential challenges for the product in the competitive landscape. Finally, the episode addresses the stagnation in IT leadership diversity, revealing concerning statistics from a recent survey. The data shows that 89.6% of IT leaders are white and 79% are male, with minimal changes from previous quarters. The Society for Human Resource Management's recent decision to remove equity from its diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy has sparked controversy, as critics argue it undermines commitments to fostering a diverse workplace. Sobel emphasizes the importance of gender diversity in IT, citing research that indicates diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones, ultimately enhancing business efficiency and customer satisfaction.Four things to know today00:00 NIST Faces Vulnerability Report Backlog as Cloud Threats Dominate Cybersecurity Concerns04:02 VMware Users Flock to OpenStack Amid Acquisition Uncertainty, While Microsoft Ups System Center Pricing for 2025 05:36 Apple Addresses macOS Sequoia Cybersecurity Bugs Ahead of Major AI Launch with iOS 18.106:38 IT Leadership Diversity Stagnates as DEI Efforts Face Scrutiny   Supported by:  https://www.huntress.com/mspradio/https://www.coreview.com/msp  Event: www.smbTechFest.com/Go/Sobel   All our Sponsors: https://businessof.tech/sponsors/ Do you want the show on your podcast app or the written versions of the stories? What motivates me is talking to students in a way that they're not going to come back to me in 10 years with this look on their face, you know, Dr. Hiser, why didn't you tell me this? Why didn't you tell me? I want to be sure that they're going to leave the interaction that we get to have that they're going to leave with at least an idea that someone tried to help them see that reality.dr krista hiser, conscient podcast, may 19, 2021, hawai‘iKrista is a longtime Professor at Kapiʻolani Community College in Hawai‘i where she teaches composition, climate communication, and climate fiction. Her PhD in Educational Administration focused on students as stakeholders in sustainability curriculum. She has published on service-learning, community engagement, organizational change, and post-apocalyptic and cli-fi literature. She is currently serving as director of the University of Hawai‘i System Center for Sustainability Across Curriculum where Krista's work is to facilitate change management, coordinate sustainability across the curriculum, and facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue and professional development opportunities for faculty interested in teaching sustainability, climate change, and resilience. Krista is motivated by a quote from David Orr who said, “students deserve an education relevant to the future they will inherit.”I first heard about Krista work at a meeting of a group of climate educators, organized by Jennifer Atkinson and Sarah Raquette Ray, where Krista spoke about some of her research. I also heard her in conversation with my fellow art and climate podcaster Peterson Toscano on Citizens' Climate Radio Ep. 51: Art & identity in a time of climate change.I enjoyed my lively conversation with Krista, notably about how our brains try to protect us for the reality of the climate emergency and how to understand the levels of grief that we can experience and how to overcome it. I was also impressed by her thoughts on ungrading (which I shared with my two children, both University students). Some of my favourite quotes from our conversation include: The art space is maybe the last open space where that boxiness and that rigidity isn't as present. The shift is that faculty are really no longer just experts. They are knowledge brokers or knowledge intermediaries. There's so much information out there. It's so overwhelming. There are so many different realities that faculty need to interact with this information and create experiences that translate information for students so that students can manage their own information. There's a whole range of emotions around climate emergency, and not getting stuck in the grief. Not getting stuck in anger. A lot of what we see of youth activists and in youth activism is that they get kind of burned out in anger and it's not a sustainable emotion. But none of them are emotions that you want to get stuck in. When you get stuck in climate grief, it is hard to get unstuck, so moving through all the different emotions — including anger and including hope — and that idea of an anthem and working together, those are all part of the emotion wheel that exists around climate change. As I have done in all episodes in season 2 so far, I have integrated excerpts from soundscape compositions and quotations drawn from e19 reality, as well as new field recordings and moments of silence, in this episode.I would like to thank Krista for taking the time to speak with me, for sharing her deep knowledge of climate education, her passion for literature and music and her courage to speak the truth to power through her work. For more information on Krista's work, see https://www.hawaii.edu/sustainability/staff-item/krista-hiser-phd/ and https://www.gcseglobal.org/bio/krista-hiserLinksPublic Letter on Addressing Collapse RiskWorry and Hope: What College Students Know, Think, Feel, and Do about Climate ChangeLove in the times of coral reefs (Ruth Mundy)Existential Tool Kit for Climate Justice EducatorsThe Ultimate Cli-Fi Book Club for Sustainability in Higher Education *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHere is a link for more information on season 5. We talk about how Azure Stack helped his customer realize the value of Azure even when there were compliance need for the data not to leave the customer’s datacenters. Tom talks about how he keeps himself up to date with everything that’s happening in the Cloud world and his e-commerce website too. Thomas’s journey on how he got to where he is today (01:44) When he was starting off his career, he bet on Hyper-V v/s Active Directory because it was a niche technology then. He then focused on Hyper-V, System Center suite of products. Hyper-V was great for a while, but he wanted to focus on the next big thing – which is Azure. He started on Azure from when it was called “Windows Azure” We also discuss how cloud is constantly evolving based on customer’s feedback – Tom talks about his role as Cloud Advocate and how he bridges the gap between the engineering teams and the customers. Interesting projects that Thomas has worked on (07:09) Azure stack – A luxury product company wanted to leverage Azure and the global scale. However they had a requirement that pictures of new products couldn’t leave their datacenter – and this policy was just written in stone. Azure Stack (now called Azure Stack Hub) enabled them to run IaaS and PaaS using ARM templates using the same familiar CI/CD tools. We also discuss Azure Arc how it enhances our hybrids story by extending Azure’s data services to on premise. With Microsoft – Hybrid was always in mind when we planned for any new features. We also talk about how Azure management plane – ARM APIs, RBAC and Azure Policies extends to on premise – using Azure ARC. Thomas’s advice to anyone who is starting off in the Cloud Solution space (15:14) MSLearn is the single go to place for anyone starting off in the Azure space. You don’t need an Azure subscription, all you would need is a Microsoft account. This not only provides you with the theory and videos but also provides you with a sandbox Azure account where you can use it as a demo lab. Apart from MSLearn, the Azure certification is a good path to verify your skills. If you are already an architect Azure Architect Center, Cloud Adoption Framework and Migration Center are good places to start. Thomas’s advice to keep himself abreast of all the changes happening in the cloud world (20:30) Acceptance – “that you can’t possibly not know everything about everything. Have a T shaped learning methodology” He spends his morning reading through RSS feeds – on what’s new, what was updated and announcements. He follows Microsoft’s blogs, connects to the PG using twitter. Tom likes to build stuff to learn. Once he builds it he explains it using a blog or presentation. This forces him to know a little more about the topic than what is required. Instrumentation and Automation across clouds and on-premise? Yes! Richard chats with Jeremy Winter about his work bringing Microsoft Operations Management Suite to life in the cloud. Think of it as Monitoring and Management as a Service, although it works just fine with your on-premise systems as well. OMS comes from the System Center world, but it isn't dependent on it - you can use OMS with and without System Center. Jeremy also talks about how other existing instrumentation and automation tools integrate with OMS so that you don't have to do any rip-and-replace, just add OMS on the top for a broader view of your systems. Richard talks to Damian Flynn about Windows Azure Pack for Windows Server and Service Management Automation. Big confusing names for a really simple concept - how do we bring self-service to the users of our infrastructure? The discussion starts out around the idea of service management automation, using tools to make your IT systems more service-centric, allowing people to provision and utilize infrastructure on demand. This leads to a conversation on Windows Azure Pack for Windows Server (WAP) - terrible name, but accurate. WAP is all about making Microsoft Azure tooling available in your own infrastructure. While it can stand on it's own, WAP also works well with various components of System Center including Configuration Manager, Operations Manager, Virtual Machine Manager and Orchestrator. This looks to be the best way to bring self-service to your company!

It's all about the tools around the hypervisor - whether that's vSphere on the VMWare side and System Center on the Microsoft side. So they both have their merits, but Mitch is all about Hyper-V. The conversation dives deep on the evolution of IT using virtualization, not just in the data center, but all the way out to the desktop.
