Meet Sen. Bob Duff, Senate Majority Leader in Connecticut

The Political Life

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 15, 2024 46:41

Senator Bob Duff is a state senator from Connecticut and has been the Majority Leader since 2015.  Bob's Norwalk family ties go back five generations. His passion for public service began at the age of eight. That's when Bob voiced his concerns for the future of Duffy Field to then-mayor William Collins. Today, we still have Duffy Field — now renamed Veterans Park. Since joining the legislature, Bob has been a tireless advocate for job creation in Connecticut. Bob has also earned a reputation as a consumer watchdog. As Chair of the legislature's Housing Committee, he created the state's first Housing Trust Fund to build more affordable housing in Connecticut. As Chair of the Banking Committee, Bob worked to safeguard Connecticut homeowners from the ravages of predatory lending by creating a package of first-in-the-nation reforms to reduce the number of home foreclosures in the state. Included was the foreclosure mediation program, Mortgage Crisis Job Training Program (the first iteration to the federally recognized and nationally acclaimed Platform to Employment program) to help those unemployed or underemployed avoid foreclosure and a law that provides tools to municipalities ensuring lenders maintain their vacant properties.  Bob's consumer advocacy continued as he went on to Chair the Energy and Technology Committee. As Chair, Bob championed two major pieces of energy legislation which taken together implement a new comprehensive energy strategy for Connecticut: restructuring support for renewable sources of electricity to provide for cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy for consumers and businesses. Bob also supported the nation's first cybersecurity report by a state government relating to safeguarding our electric grid and water utilities.  In addition, the Senate Democratic caucus with Bob has achieved numerous legislative victories. Most recently, the caucus passed legislation standing up for DREAMers, the National Popular Vote, net neutrality, data privacy, health care access, Time's Up, gun safety, LGBTQ rights, equal pay for equal work, raising the minimum wage and Paid Family Medical Leave. Bob has also been involved with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) serving on both the Foundation Board and Nominating Committee and active in their leadership programs. Throughout his legislative career, Bob has been honored by The Workplace Inc., AARP of Connecticut, the Lockwood-Matthews Mansion Museum, the Save Cranbury Association, Side-by-Side Charter School, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, Greater Stamford Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Women's Business Development Council, the Maritime Aquarium, the Norwalk NAACP, the Norwalk Marching Bears, Inc., Action for Bridgeport Community Development and the Norwalk Public Schools Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee. After graduating Norwalk Public Schools, Bob earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Lynchburg College in Virginia. There, Bob honed his political skills as a student senator, campus leader and intern for then-U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT). Bob, his wife, Tracey, and their two children live on Toilsome Avenue in Norwalk with their rescue dog, Molly.

In this week's episode of the Paulding County News Podcast, hosts Melissa Carter and Doug Harding bring you a lineup of stories that hit close to home for our community. From the courtroom to unexpected adventures, we're covering the news that matters to Paulding County.   First, we address a serious issue involving a Dallas man sentenced to a decade behind bars for stalking his former partner and her young son, highlighting the consequences of aggravated stalking and the bravery of those who stand up against their abusers. Our source, BrightGram, provides a detailed account of the ordeal that sheds light on the importance of legal protection and community support for victims of domestic violence.   Next, we turn to a heartbreaking story from WTSP about an 11-year-old Paulding County boy whose life was tragically cut short. The details surrounding the shooting are as devastating as they are urgent, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and safety in our neighborhoods.   In business news, rue21's bankruptcy filing marks the end of an era for a teen retailer that once aimed to make fashion accessible to all. With all 540 stores, including our local outlet in Hiram, set to close, we discuss the implications for our community and what this means for the future of retail in Paulding County, with insights from The Patch.   But it's not all solemn news; join us for a tale that's as bizarre as it is heartwarming. Welcome to your Paulding County News Podcast and Happy Easter.  I'm Melissa Carter, along with Doug Harding.  A teen tries to flee police, but current technology thwarted his efforts.  Plus, a collaboration between two of your favorite restaurants for a while new guilty pleasure.   But first, let's take a look at our top stories.   PC News   Attention Paulding turkey hunters - turkey hunting season kicked off yesterday. Private lands are open for turkey hunting, but public hunting grounds don't open until on Saturday, and will run through May 15th. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the turkey population faced challenges in reproduction from 2021 to 2022. Emily Rushton, the Wild Turkey Project Coordinator, noted that while reproduction rates have dipped slightly, hunters can still expect comparable gobbler numbers to previous years. During the season, hunters are reminded of bag limits— one turkey per day, with a total of two for the season, and specific regulations for Wildlife Management Areas and National Forest lands. All hunters, including youth, must maintain a harvest record and complete the reporting process through Georgia Game Check within 24 hours of harvesting. For those under 16, no license is needed, but older hunters must obtain the necessary licenses unless hunting on private land. This from WSB.   PC News   Congratulations to Brandon Maple! Maple has been named Battalion Chief with the Paulding County Fire & Rescue. Battalion Chief Maple will now lead Battalion 1 on the B-shift. Blake Maynor also got a promotion!    Now Lieutenant Maynor will serve at Station 3 on A-shift.   This from Paulding County Government.   PC News In an inspiring comeback story, 13-year-old Carley Krokey of Dallas is back in action after a harrowing battle. Diagnosed with a large brain tumor last year, Carley faced unimaginable challenges. Carley's journey began with crippling headaches, leading to a terrifying diagnosis. But through two surgeries and months of rehabilitation, she never lost hope. Carley says she never quit, because quitting is just not an option at that point. Now, with the tumor gone and her spirit stronger than ever, Carley's back where she belongs: playing the game she loves. This from Fox 5.     Weather Partly Sunny today with a High of 78 in Dallas and Hiram.  Lows in the upper 50's. Partly Sunny tomorrow with a High of 79 in Dallas and Hiram.  Lows in the lower 60's. Thunderstorms Tuesday, Highs in the upper 70s.   Arrest Report From WSB's Facebook page:   A Georgia teen thought he had outsmarted police after they said he stole a car, but now he's behind bars after trying to run. The owner of the Dodge Charger was able to live track the car, giving a good location for the police helicopter, which helped patrol cars locate 17-year-old Jerious Simpson. Mike Morris What is it about thugs and Dodge Chargers? Always a Charger.   Stephen Robinson Liberal Fulton county judges will slap him on the wrist like all the others and he'll be back to terrorizing communities in no time.  If not, already.   Tom Ludlow Big ups to the role model getting a jump on his career! Put in that work!   Sonny Linn Yet another upstanding member of society.       Social Media   From the Paulding County Facebook page: Wright Squad asked - Just curious .......How many potholes yall run over daily?   Shannon Banks Too many, LOL. And that's while looking like a drunk driver, trying to avoid them.   Mikayla Rose Goodman For the amount of taxes paid, should be zero.   Russ Harvey All of this half-finished road construction that has been billed in the millions/billions of dollars that is over budget and past due.   Logan Gordon On average, 5   Austin Jarvis 37ish   Preston Hansen 1262.50 in 20 miles     Weird Story A bank robbery in Westchester, Illinois took an unexpected turn. Larnie Brewer stands accused of holding up a Byline Bank branch with a chilling note. The demand for cash came with a threat, but Brewer didn't get far. Just minutes after the robbery, law enforcement caught up with Brewer at a nearby bus stop. The stolen money, equipped with a tracking device, led officers right to him. Brewer's alleged confession sealed the deal. He's now in custody, thanks to swift action by authorities. This from WSB.       Events Saturday beginning at 10am - grand reopening of the Dallas Markets.   April 20th from 10am until Noon - the 21st annual Touch-A-Truck at Veterans Park in Dallas.   April 27th from 8a until Noon - its Keep Paulding Beautiful's Shred Day at the Watson Building in Dallas.       (Interview)     State News   Another Georgia county faces a cyber crisis. Gilmer County officials are grappling with a ransomware attack. They've enlisted top cybersecurity experts to combat the threat. While some services are affected, vital infrastructure like the 911 center stands strong. The full extent of disruption remains unclear. Meanwhile, officials are tight-lipped about the attack. Krispy Kreme doughnuts are set to hit all McDonald's restaurants. This follows a successful test run in Kentucky and promises availability in Paulding County by 2026. Tariq Hassan, McDonald's USA's chief marketing officer, expressed excitement, calling it a chance to unlock new business opportunities. Krispy Kreme's president and CEO, Josh Charlesworth, hailed the move as fulfilling the daily pleas from doughnut enthusiasts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tina Jones research journey began in 2000 when she began working with the local senior citizens - many of whom were residents of two historically African American neighborhoods in Franklin, Tennessee.  Franklin was the site of a significant Civil War battle and is the county seat of Williamson County, Tennessee. Several historic homes operate as museums and significant local attention is paid to the community’s Civil War history. The genealogy program with 50 senior citizens soon had constructed dozens of family trees - many intersecting. She started compiling any information she could find about the experiences of enslaved people in Williamson County to understand more fully the context in which the people she was researching had lived.  Tina tracked down slave narratives of people with ties to the area, newspaper clippings, probate documents, and diary entries.  It all helped paint a fuller story - and highlighted an aspect of local history that had been almost entirely overlooked: the contributions of black men who served in the who joined the US Navy and the US Army’s Colored Troops during the Civil War. She now specializes in researching these men and telling their stories. She raises money to install brick pavers inscribed with their names in the County’s Veterans Park through her “Slaves To Soldiers” project. Inspired partially by this work, a local group called the “Fuller Story” has formed to erect a statue depicting a local US Colored Troop soldier on the town square.    Opening music: Sweet Mello Spice by AK Alexander Productions

The Manchester City Marathon in Manchester New Hampshire bills itself as the largest running event in New Hampshire. The 13th edition of the race was held on Sunday, November 10th, 2019. My youngest sister, Autum Haley, traveled with me to this race. It her first half marathon after having her 4th child last year. This was my 62nd marathon in my 49th state. Only one state to go! Race Recap: The Manchester City Marathon The expo/bib pick up was located at the Millennium Running Store in Bedford, NH the day before the race. They also offered race day pick up the morning of the race at race headquarters in Veterans Park. This was a nice option for those who lived somewhat locally. I got a message the night before from a MTA listener named Kathleen on Instagram that her son had eaten one of the UCAN bars she needed to fuel her first marathon. She was wondering if I had an extra she could get. I’d brought a couple extra for my sister and was happy to give her one so we arranged to meet the next morning. It was fun to be able to meet Kathleen and her sister that morning and get a quick picture. We did a MTA Meet up at Backyard Brewery on Saturday evening and it was fun to meet Allie who lived about an hour away as well as Jane and her running team. Jane is the mother of Noelle, one of my first coaching clients. Noelle has gone on to become a trail running rock star completing three 50 milers, two 12 hour races, and recently ran her first 24 hour race (she ran over 94 miles and was the first place female)!Race Morning: The marathon, half, and relays started at 8:50 am and were broadcast live on TV. The 5k started at 9am and had a different course. The starting area was in front of the SNHU (Southern New Hampshire University) Arena in downtown Manchester and was very close to the hotel we were staying at. It was wonderful to be able to wait in the warm hotel lobby until just a few minutes before the race and not have to stand outside in the cold for an extended period of time. The weather was clear and in the low 30’s at the start and there was a slight breeze which made it feel even more chilly. I decided to wear shorts, compression socks, a short sleeve race shirt, arm sleeves, light knit gloves, my lucky hat, and my On Cloudswift shoes. I was also wearing a long sleeve throw-away shirt (which I got rid of at mile 2).The Course: The marathon and half marathon course were identical for the first 13 miles. At mile 13 the race returned to downtown Manchester where the half marathoners finished and the marathoners ran right by the finish line to start the second half of the course. I found the first half of the race to be quite hilly and challenging. My watch showed a total of 1,273 feet of elevation gain for the whole marathon but I’d estimate that at least 800-900 feet of that was in the first half. Most of the course was around the city of Manchester, through the historic mill yard district, and into the suburbs. There are several sections where the course runs along and over the Merrimack River. The course did start to flatten out around mile 16 and at 16.5 we started an out and back section that went to mile 20.5 on the Piscataquog Trail. It was a dirt/gravel surface and there were some roots, rocks, and mud/ice puddles that had to be navigated around. Then the course proceeded to the Goffstown Rail Trail. This is a very scenic portion of the route as it follows the Piscataquog River back to Manchester. At mile 22 the run crosses the new “Trestle” bridge and continues back to the city, crossing the footbridge over the Merrimack River, and running the final miles in downtown Manchester. The final mile goes by the finish area again, turns off Elm street to cross the bridge, and then returns back to Elm Street to the finish. I found that final mile to be challenging because we were teased with the finish and then had a final overpass hill to run up which felt enormous at that point.Aid Stations/Fueling: Official race aid stations were located approximately every two miles and were well supported. Each one had water and sports drink and a few offered other fueling options. There were also a surprising number of unofficial aid stations like a lemonade stand, someone handing out small water bottles, a mimosa stop, a beer stop, and people handing out candy. I stuck with my fueling strategy of using Generation UCAN bars washed down with water from the aid stations. Use the code MTAMANCHESTER to save 15% on your order. For first time customers use the code MTA25.Finish Line: There were a good number of spectators along the final stretch and they had an announcer calling each runner’s name who crossed the finish line. The total number of marathon finishers was 360. There were 562 who finished the half marathon and also quite a few relay teams. There were 270 finishers for the 5k. The medal was huge and featured stained glass elements behind buildings in Manchester. They also did race tracking and offered free race pictures and a finish line video. The shirt was a very nice long sleeve technical shirt. My Experience: I ran with a guy named Carlos for a few miles which helped pass the time. He’s also pursuing his 50 states and working up to a BQ. I ran by feel during the race and only looked at my watch at each mile split. I felt a bit tired just going into the marathon but wanted to run as strong as possible while listening to my body. The uphills and downhills in the first half were challenging and by mile 18 my lower body felt done. It was one of those feelings that I’ve had during marathons in the past when you feel like walking, but walking doesn’t actually feel any better. Since I knew this I tried to keep my stride and gait consistent and run relaxed in spite of my fatigue. My glutes and hamstrings were particularly sore but thankfully my feet felt good. I finished my 62nd marathon (and state #49) in 3:43:01 and was 2nd in my age group. I got a mug and reusable drawstring bag for the AG placing. Autum was at the finish line to meet me and get some pictures. It was great to see her and find out that she had a good half marathon, finishing in 2:19. They had a nice food area with yogurt, soup, flatbread pizza, chocolate milk, and coffee. The heat sheet felt good because the temps were still cool. We headed out later to find a post-race meal and just happened to see Kathleen, the lady who needed the UCAN bar, finish strong. Here’s what she wrote in later: Hi Angie, Thank you so much for meeting me this morning with the UCAN bar. Here is the photo of us. What a highlight for me to get to meet you. Congratulations on a great run today! You inspire your listeners so much. I finished today, my first marathon, in 5:33:17. The miles seemed to fly by and I had a fun experience. Thanks for your great training plan that got me there. Sincerely, -Kathleen I also heard back from Jane from the MTA meet up Hi Angie, What a pleasure to meet you – and your sister Autumn.  Kudos to Autumn for traveling, running and being a mom and wife!  Pretty amazing!  We enjoyed our dinner with you, and the race the next day. We did well on Sunday: Kelsey & Laxmi competed the 5K – Laxmi’s 2nd race ever! Jen, Suzanne, Emily and I did the half marathon.  I’m pretty sure it was Emily’s 2nd fastest half. Sara did her 1st marathon at the 2017 Hartford Marathon in 5:10:01.  Last week in Manchester, using the MTA training plan, she finished in 4:35:50 !!!!  So great!! I am on a quest to be a 50 stater for half marathons.  I have 17 completed.  Manchester was a repeat state for me – but my 32nd half! I hope that you and Trevor have continued success with MTA.  I have certainly enjoyed listening, using your training plans, doing the virtual half and especially wearing my Release the Kraken hat!!  Thanks again. -Jane Also Mentioned in This Episode MTA Meet Up at the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 5. Activities and events from Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 5, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Before I begin, I would like to thank all the listeners who have taken the time to visit and like the podcasts Facebook page and those who have sent some wonderful comments. Remember that this podcast is for you and if you have any suggestions for improvement, please send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. A special thanks to Geoff Penman who corrected the historical tidbit from last weeks episode. If you remember, I said that Davis Lake extended from Veterans Memorial Park to, what is now, Gletty Road. I didn’t believe that was possible since the buildings on Main Street existed prior to Davis lake being drained. I mistakenly thought that the Park referred to Veterans Park which is across from City Hall. Actually the lake extended from Sandwich Memorial Park to Gletty Road. Sandwich Memorial Park lies west of the YMCA and has an entrance on Water Street. This weeks tidbit of Sandwich history is about what once was an old train car and is now the Bull Moose Bar and Grille. The train car is a former Pullman Palace car that was built in 1893, at a cost of $25,000, and initially shown at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago later that year. It was placed into service by the Burlington (now the Burlington Northern Sante Fe) railroad and was part of their special “Pride of Burlington” train. In 1904, the train car was given to President Teddy Roosevelt to use during his presidential campaign and returned to the Burlington railway after Roosevelt was elected. The train car was put back into use for another presidential election in 1908 as William Howard Taft’s official transportation carriage. Taft won the election. During the next election, Roosevelt ran on his own Progressive Party (or “Bull Moose” Party) ticket Figuring the train car was good luck since it was used by the last two winners of Presidential elections, he got the car from the Burlington railway and used it to criss-cross the country during his campaign. Well, Teddy Roosevelt lost that election to Woodrow Wilson and the train car was returned to the railroad. The train car continued on the Burlington line until it was retired in the early 1930’s. In 1934, Sandwich resident Henry Tattersal bought the train car for $75 dollars and moved it from California to Sandwich, placing it on the southwest corner of Main and Church Streets. He redesigned the train car as a diner and opened it later that year and called it “The Diner”. In 1935, a man by the name of Wright bought the diner and moved it across the street to its present day location next to a house and renamed it “Wright’s Diner”. The train car diner has gone through a number of owners and name changes over the years, eventually incorporating the house into part of the restaurant It has been known as Paul’s Diner, Cucina Plata, Kelly’s Pub and the American Grill. The diner closed in 2008 and sat vacant for a couple years. That’s when Ron and Sue came into the picture. Ron and Sue bought the train car and house and painstakingly restored the inside building and car, as well as spruced up the outside that had deteriorated over time. Having had an antique business for over 25 years, Sue Saballus used her antique connections to find lighting fixtures and decorations to restore the train car to its original splendor when Teddy Roosevelt used it a century before. They even restored the original leaded glass windows along the top of the railcar. The family opened their restaurant in 2010 choosing the Bull Moose Bar and Grille name as a nod to the historical significance of the rail car. Photohistorian and local history activist David Rocco visits RadioRotary to tell about the project to mount a plaque in Veterans Park, Beacon, NY, to commemorate two airplane crashes on Mount Beacon. Mount Beacon, named for its role in the use of a fire atop the mountain during the American revolution that would notify Washington’s army of British advances toward West Point, is the highest peak of the Hudson Highlands. In 1935 two Navy reservists lost their lives when their biplane crashed high on the mountain; then, ten years later, a twin-engine Navy plane carrying 6 Navy aviators, including legendary Captain Dixie Kiefer, also crashed on the mountain, killing all aboard. Mr. Rocco has been spearheading a group that is mounting a commemorative plaque. Mr. Rocco has been involved in a number of local projects, including developing the Walkway on the Hudson, a local dog park, and restoring the Mount Beacon fire tower. Recently Mr. Rocco has taken 10,000 photographs documenting the replacement of the Tappan Zee Bridge with the new Mario Cuomo Bridge, including six showing the dramatic explosions used to bring down the last span of the Tappan Zee structure.
